What can I say? I had no clue who Ed May was going in to our conversation other than knowing that we got connected on the 48 Days community when I was asking for experts to talk to. Well that meant I had to do some digging to ensure that it was a fun episode. What I didn’t expect to find was that being a professional puppeteer, like Ed is, could be so fun. I honestly felt like a little kid on Christmas opening the best gift in the world.

Ed has been a puppeteer for many years and in fact has recently launched Runaway Puppet Theater – his own theatre company. We talk about the approach he’s taking to grow his audience and reach within the education system. And as any puppeteer will tell you, most of the time you’re on contract so you’re constantly marketing your skills. That makes perfect sense then that I managed to find Ed’s demo reel online. The 0:26 mark is a particularly favorite part of the reel.

Dustin goes in to ways that he’s grown his podcast audience – now over 150 episodes – and some proven techniques you can use to grow your audience. In fact we had Erik J. Fisher of Beyond the To-Do List on Expert Empire and he’s a member of the network. And before you ask, not all contributors need the middle initial “J” to be a part. Daniel talks about how the network was created in part as an accident, but how it has provided such great leverage to him and his network of shows to rapidly grow an audience.

So why not just start your own podcast network then? Well, he actually gets into reasons why you may not want to actually consider starting your own and more so why it may be beneficial to join one. His requirements are pretty strict with a bit of lenience on joining his network, but there are lots of others you could consider. It’s really about ensuring it’s a win-win-win arrangement for everyone involved.

In addition to producing top-rated podcasts, Daniel also does a lot of WordPress work. He’s developed a premium plugin called Subscribe and Follow and regularly develops for the Genesis framework, so naturally we chat a little bit about WordPress too.

She is an Instagram expert and has used the photo service to grow her brick and mortar business exponentially – like over 40% growth!

Not only that, but she’s even got a great training course available that she’s re-working to give an exclusive deal to members of the Empire. I’ll be sure to update you once it’s available, so make sure you’re getting our emails.

During our conversation Sue gives specific examples on how you can create an Instagram image in under one-minute. She also breaks down the process she used to grow her following on Instagram. I’ve toyed with Instagram for a few years but really haven’t focused on using it as a platform to grow my audience. I’m beginning to think that I should possibly start looking at it a little closer.

We talk about specific ways to gain referrals for your business, show or anything else. The way he breaks down his thoughts on the “Core Four” on ways to grow an audience is truly inspiring.

Build credibility

Build trust

Build likability

Build value

These aren’t really anything new, but they’re definitely something you’ll want to take to heart when growing and defining your business. It’s what I’m trying to do with Expert Empire and am slowly growing in all four areas as is evident by iTunes ratings, downloads, comments and conversations over social media. But guess what, I still want more conversation and engagement. I want to know you better.

And yes, he gets it out of me that I’ll be attending New Media Expo in Las Vegas, NV January 4-6, 2014.

I could go down a rabbit hole here talking about being sure to connect with me in Vegas in January, which would honestly parallel the conversation that we had. There were definitely many paths the conversation could have taken but we ultimately stuck with utilizing mobile strategies to grow your audience and platform.

Rand Fishkin, the CEO of Moz co-founded what is today, one of the marketing world’s fastest growing software companies. Based in Seattle, Moz’s focus is on serving professional marketers with analytics and recommendations to improve their web traffic and customer acquisition.

As CEO, Rand is responsible for recruiting and managing the executive team, leading the product/strategic vision and evangelizing better marketing practices, channels, and tactics around the world.

I’ve had the privilege of knowing Rand for a number of years through a mutual friend in the SEO world. I was excited when he graciously hopped on a call to talk all things SEO for the benefit of the entire Empire. In fact, he gave four things that every online business, brand and person should do to truly maintain relevancy in the ever changing world of SEO.

Things got interesting when we began chatting about some previous campaigns like My Super Proposal in which Rand was all set to air a wedding proposal during the Super Bowl. At the last second, the sponsor (which he reveals for one of the first times) pulled out and instead he proposed on a different show – Veronica Mars – his wife’s favorite show. You should see her reaction!

We also touched base on a new adventure he’s working on with Wil Reynolds of SEER – a CEO swap. It was definitely an awesome conversation and I hope you enjoy it.

In fact, he was one of the first people that agreed to have a conversation with me and I’m so excited I can finally share it with you.

John was gracious enough to share his complete story, including figures he spent on coaching with Jaime Tardy, the host of Eventual Millionare. We talked about getting guests for your show, sharing the content, monetization of a podcast and in pretty good detail, how sponsorship works.

You’ll hear some little Skype sounds and background noises — just further proof of how much learning I had to do. This chat really helped me grow Expert Empire to where it is already — and there’s so much more to go.

“Getting out of the comfort zone” was just one of the many things that he recommended doing. It’s time to change that, so bear with me while I evolve and grow the empire.

I’m definitely a follower of his advice and techniques and had a great time getting answers to some of the questions that I’ve had over the past few years.

In addition to the proven audience strategies he offers in the chat, Cliff offers a free, no strings attached course at LearnHowToPodcast.com which teaches you the basics of how to get your podcast recorded and launched. If you’re serious and want to go to the next level, he offers a course called Podcasting A to Z which I highly recommend. I managed to snag a discount of $500 for you PLUS another exclusive bonus is revealed in the episode.

Listen to this weeks episode and let me know what you think.

I’d be greatful if you’d head over to iTunes and leave the show a rating and review.

<itunes:summary>Chatting with Cliff Ravenscraft, better known as the Podcast Answer Man, was and always is such a fun time. I'm definitely a follower of his advice and techniques and had a great time getting answers to some of the questions that I've had over the past few years.

In addition to the proven audience strategies he offers in the chat, Cliff offers a free, no strings attached course at LearnHowToPodcast.com which teaches you the basics of how to get your podcast recorded and launched. If you're serious and want to go to the next level, he offers a course called Podcasting A to Z which I highly recommend. I managed to snag a discount of $500 for you PLUS another exclusive bonus is revealed in the episode.

Listen to this weeks episode and let me know what you think.

I'd be greatful if you'd head over to iTunes and leave the show a rating and review.

I asked Dana about some of the technical aspects and got some good information from her. The best part was her telling me I really need to focus on my persona and audience. Who my client really is. Over the next few episodes in going to explore that a little further and hope that we land somewhere that makes sense for you.

Mark Mason from Late Night Internet Marketing was an amazing guest. We fought through fire alarms and building changes and I felt it was only appropriate he be the first conversation to share with members of the Empire.

We got into a good discussion on things I’ve done wrong in the past and how they’ve shaped thoughts for the future. In fact we went a lot deeper into GetAdobeCreativeSuite.com than I thought we would. It was interesting to see I had a lot of similar thoughts initially to what Mark suggested.

The single biggest take away I got from our chat was definitely one of value. As in the ability to provide value for my listeners, guests, users, customers and every other person that interacts with the site.

I hope you get value out of the first official conversation on Expert Empire. I’d love to know what it was, so leave a comment below.

Welcome to Expert Empire. This is the first episode of many more to come. In today’s episode I introduce myself to you so that you can get to know me a little better and as I lay out the expectations for Expert Empire.

I won’t create a transcript of this episode, but hopefully future episodes will have them so you can also read the notes of the call if you prefer that approach.

My name is Marshall Stevenson and I live in Calgary, Alberta which is in Canada. I have an amazing daughter and am soon to be marrying her mother. I won’t go into the details of that, but just know that it’s a great thing!

Each episode I record a conversation with someone I feel is an expert. A lot of that comes back to my definition of an expert which essentially is someone who knows more than I do about a particular subject. I tend to talk with people in areas that interest me like entrepreneurship, innovation and personal development. These are the type experts I seek out and the ones I’m truly interest in talking with…but I’ll honestly talk with everyone. If you, or someone you know, would be a great fit for the show head to expertempire.com/guest and I’ll be in touch.

At the release of this first episode, Expert Empire is not yet available in iTunes. In fact, that’s why this episode really is here so that it can go through the approval process so that on July 18, 2013 – the same day as my wedding – I can release a real episode to the world. Be sure to subscribe to our email list to be the first to know when our expert conversations are released.

I’d like to welcome you to the empire as we build it together. Let’s get to know each other. Leave a comment below.
