	Autumn of Adventure Giveaway Enter Today for your chance to win a Ford Escape Hybrid (two year lease) or one of many other weekly prizes.
	Exploring Fall Color on Road and Trail With its brilliant backdrop of foliage tinted in reds and yellows, autumn is the perfect time for a scenic drive or a hike or bike ride along a secluded trail. Explore one of these featured routes this fall, or choose another one of Minnesota’s scenic byways and numerous bike trails and hiking paths.
	Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! That’s what the song says, and women agree: those special times when the ladies get away together are a great time. A 2007 survey by AAA found that one of four women have taken a getaway with their women friends.
	CivicFest: All Things Presidential While Republicans are nominating their presidential candidate in St. Paul this September, a major event in Minneapolis will offer an inside look at the lives of American presidents. CivicFest: A Very Minnesota Celebration, to be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center Aug. 29-Sept. 4, will feature more than 30 educational and entertaining exhibits focusing on the U.S. presidency.
	Green Getaways Rich in Local Flavor The concept of “green getaways” is taking off as more people plan trips to enjoy the local flavor of a destination and visit environmentally friendly sites and businesses.
	Discover Beautiful Lake Vermilion Lake Vermilion, in northeast Minnesota, made the news this spring when state funding was approved to purchase land on the southeast shore to develop a new state park. This major new park will provide public access to one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in the state.
	Northfield: A Distinctive Town with a Story to Tell Small-town charm, a scenic setting, and a dramatic story of civic courage all make Northfield a great spot for a getaway. The historic downtown district, with architecture dating to the late 1800s, centers on Division Street, where storefronts from the past are now home to an interesting array of specialty shops, coffeehouses and restaurants.
	Hutchinson Is A-plus: Art, Apples & Antiques The attractive city of Hutchinson is a fun weekend getaway for those who enjoy hand-crafted art and antiques. Located in central Minnesota, it’s also an easy day trip from the St. Cloud, Mankato and Twin Cities areas.



	Mysteries Uncovered at Science Museum A brand new giant-screen film and a special touring exhibit coming to the Science Museum of Minnesota in downtown St. Paul this fall both focus on discovering the facts behind some intriguing mysteries.
	State Park Stays: Now You Can Reserve a Year Ahead All Minnesota State Parks camping and lodging reservations may now be made up to one year in advance, allowing travelers to make plans to stay at a park earlier than under the previous policy. Visitors may book next year’s camping vacation during or soon after this year’s trip, while their favorite places and campsite is fresh in their mind.
	Vatican Exhibit Graces St. Paul This fall the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul will host the special touring exhibit “Vatican Splendors from Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the Swiss Guard.” This is the final of only three U.S. engagements for this rare exhibit of approximately 200 cultural, historical and artistic objects from the Vatican.

	Tall Ships Sail Into Duluth Duluth will welcome three tall ships into the harbor August 1-3, with on-board tours of these fascinating replicas of historic vessels. The ships will be in port as part of the Duluth Maritime Festival, celebrating the state’s Sesquicentennial.
	Minnesota’s County Fairs This is a listing of most of Minnesota’s county fairs, though some fairs had not confirmed their dates when this issue of the Explorer went to press.

	Update from Bluff Country: What’s New in the Southeast? The southeast bluff country of Minnesota is strikingly picturesque, a landscape of wooded bluffs, limestone cliffs, and streams winding through rural valleys. But it wasn’t really “discovered” by tourists until the Root River Trail was developed in the 1980s and lured thousands of cyclists to its secluded scenic pathway.
	Wineries Serve Up Wide Variety of Flavors and Fun Minnesota, long celebrated for sky blue waters, has uncorked another vibrant liquid. It’s wine, made in Minnesota from Minnesota-grown grapes.

The Minnesota Lottery, Explore Minnesota and Fox Sports Network North are partnering for the "Hook, Lund & Sinker" promotion beginning April 21. TV ads on FSN North direct viewers in Minnesota and western Wisconsin to www.LuckyMN.com for a chance to win one of five fishing vacations. Timbertrail Lodge & Outfitters, Whaley's Resort & Campground, Visit Duluth's charter fishing, Sportsman's Lodge-Lake of the Woods and Nelson's Resort provided the prizes. 	Great Golf, Fine Food Make a Nice Match In many towns across Minnesota, when folks plan a special meal out, they head for the local golf course. Many clubhouse restaurants are noted for their great food, with views of a beautifully landscaped course as a scenic backdrop.
	"Star Wars" Exhibit Lands at Science Museum in St. Paul The blockbuster exhibit “Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination” will make its final U.S. stop at the Science Museum of Minnesota in downtown St. Paul June 13 through August 24, 2008.
	Oxtrot: Looking for Babe around Brainerd Lakes Where’s Babe? As in “Babe, the Blue Ox,” sidekick to the legendary lumberjack Paul Bunyan. This summer, in the Brainerd Lakes area, it will seem like Babe is everywhere.
	In the Spotlight at the Guthrie Theater Penumbra Theatre, a St. Paul company that focuses on the African American experience, will present August Wilson’s “Gem of the Ocean” at the Guthrie Theater April 18 through May 11, 2008..
	Minnesota Puts Out Welcome Mat for RVs With 34,000 campsites in almost 800 campgrounds, most of them lakeside, Minnesota is almost custom-made for camping and touring by RV. In fact, this July St. Paul will be hosting the Family Motor Coach Association’s convention. This gathering will draw about 5,000 motorhomes and 10,000-15,000 participants to the State Fairgrounds.
	Chippewa National Forest: Come Explore During Its Centennial Year One hundred years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt signed the papers that established the first national forest east of the Mississippi River, the Minnesota National Forest in the heart of the state. In 1928, it was renamed the Chippewa National Forest.
	In Search of Lake Wobegon, by Bike A ribbon of trail curls through the bucolic countryside in the heart of Minnesota, providing 127 smooth, paved miles of biking. It’s currently the longest continuous stretch of bike trail in the state, and certainly one of the longest in the country. But the folks in Lake Wobegon don’t brag about such things, so it’s still relatively undiscovered.


	News from Minnesota State Parks Geocaching, a kind of high-tech treasure hunt, is at the center of a new program that Minnesota State Parks is rolling out for the summer of 2008 in celebration of the state’s 150th birthday.
	Nickelodeon Theme Park Takes Off at Mall of America The newly revamped indoor amusement park in the center of Mall of America became Nickelodeon Universe on March 15, 2008, with several new rides and characters from Nickelodeon’s popular television shows.
	Music Fests Hit Just the Right Chord Summer is a great time to relax and listen to the music-jazz, blues, country classical-whatever gets your toe tappin.’ And if it’s out in the open air, so much the better. With its wide assortment of music festivals, Minnesota makes it easy to get out and groove to the sounds you like best.
	Harness Park Hits the Starting Gate The Running Aces Harness Park, near Forest Lake on the northern edge of the Twin Cities metro area, will open for its first season April 11.

	Minnesota Celebrates 150 Years of Statehood Minnesota became the 32nd state in the Union on May 11, 1858. Throughout 2008, communities and historic sites will celebrate the state’s Sesquicentennial.
	Minnesota Zoo To Open New Russia Exhibit The Minnesota Zoo will debut a major new, permanent exhibit called Russia’s Grizzly Coast on June 7, 2008. This $23.6 million project re-creates the habitat of the little-known Kamchatka Peninsula, a wilderness area along Russia’s far eastern coast.
