Skiers and snowmobilers will find decent trail conditions in some areas of northeastern Minnesota, with good to excellent conditions for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling along the Gunflint Trail. Please note that the forecast calls for dry, mild and breezy conditions throughout the state through early next week which will cause trail conditions to deteriorate rapidly. Before traveling, please call ahead for the most current conditions.

Northeast Region

International Falls

Warm weather is changing winter trail conditions quickly. All Voyageurs National Park snowmobile trails will be groomed through the end of the week as conditions allow, but it is uncertain whether trails will be groomed next week since trail conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly. Trail stakes will remain through the weekend, but are planned for removal next week. Due to holes and honeycombing on the ice surface, the Kabetogama Lake Ice Road has closed for the season. The Rainy Lake Ice Road currently remains open, but park staff will monitor conditions on a daily basis. Use caution and watch for slush, holes, and open water. This will be the last week of groomed ski trails. The Rainy Lake Visitor Center near International Falls has adult-sized skis available for rent and children's skis available for loan during business hours. Roughly 18 inches of snow covers the ground. Nearby, the Koochiching State Forest Tilson Creek Ski Trail is groomed and reported to be in good shape. The trail base measures 3-4 inches. Local snow depth ranges from 10-12 inches.

Ely

Ely vicinity snow depth is decreasing rapidly, and groomers have ceased operations. Unless temperatures turn cold and there is a significant snowfall, snowmobiling will be over for the season by the end of the week. The cross country ski trails remain in good shape. Expect mornings to be best for skiing as the trails will be firmer and faster. Skate skiing has been the best option, unless your classic skis have been treated with klister or are waxless.

Grand Marais/Gunflint Trail

In Cook County, just outside of Grand Marais up the Gunflint Trail, the Banadad Ski Trail and other area trails are freshly groomed, with very good to excellent conditions reported. Expect soft snow during the day, with icy trails in the morning and fast trails in the evening. The trail base measures 18 inches on average, and 22 inches of snow covers the ground. Snowmobile trails up the Gunflint Trail remain in good shape, and decent conditions should linger through the weekend. Just southwest of Grand Marais, at Cascade River State Park, the snow pack has decreased to 6-14 inches. The ski trails remain in decent shape, with a base measuring 4-8 inches. Conditions are reported to be fair. Similar conditions are reported for the snowmobile trails running through the park. The best conditions are further inland.

Silver Bay/Lutsen

Tettegouche State Park snow depth ranges from 4-12 inches, with the greatest amounts further inland. The primary ski trails are partially groomed, and conditions are fair. The snowmobile trails are also partially groomed, but trail conditions remain good. Both trails have a 3 inch base on average, however, bare spots and rocks are appearing in many areas.

Duluth/Grand Marais

The entire C.J. Ramstad/North Shore State Snowmobile Trail was groomed on March 7, but it has not been groomed this week due to warm temperatures. Weather permitting, the section of trail from Finland to Grand Marais will be re-groomed Friday evening, March 13. The trail base measures 0-3 inches from Duluth to Finland, and 2-4 inches from Finland to Grand Marais. Conditions range from poor to fair. These conditions will change due to use and weather. Bare spots and bare areas are appearing on the corners, hills and south-facing exposures. There may be water crossing the trail and ice in some locations. Please ride with caution, and expect spring riding conditions.

Most other ski and snowmobile trails in this region of the state are either in poor condition or remain closed due to a lack of snow.

Skiers and snowmobilers will find good to excellent cross-country ski and snowmobile trail conditions throughout much of northern Minnesota. And good conditions can be found along some ski and snowmobile trails in the central portion of the state. Please note that above-freezing temperatures are expected throughout the state this weekend which may cause trail conditions to deteriorate rapidly. Before traveling, please call ahead for the most current conditions.

Northeast Region

International Falls

All Voyageurs National Park snowmobile trails remain open and in good condition. Due to wolf interaction, however, short sections of the Green and Yellow Trails on Namakan Lake near the Moose River Grade have been closed and rerouted. Also, recent high winds have caused some drifting. All ski trails are packed and tracked, and in good condition. The Rainy Lake Visitor Center near International Falls has adult-sized skis available for rent and children's skis available for loan during business hours. Roughly 18 inches of snow covers the ground.

Grand Rapids/Bigfork

Scenic State Park ski and snowmobile trails are groomed and in good to very good condition. The trails have a base measuring 4 inches on average. Roughly 10 inches of snow covers the ground in this area.

International Falls

The Voyageurs National Park snowmobile trails and portages are in good condition overall, however, riders should use caution when traveling the lake surfaces, watching for pressure ridges, rock piles, snowdrifts and fish houses. Also, recent high winds have caused some drifting. All ski trails are packed and tracked, and in good condition. The Koochiching State Forest Tilson Creek Ski Trail is packed and tracked, with a 5-6 inch base. These trails have a 2 inch base. Roughly 10 inches of snow is on the ground. Please note that riders will want to access the lake using the Big Sturgeon Lake boat access due to heaving ice along the shoreline.
Following numerous light snowfalls, very good to excellent cross-country ski trail conditions and good to excellent snowmobile trail conditions can now be found throughout the northern region of the state. Cold temperatures have helped retain solid trail bases in southeastern Minnesota and some area trails also offer decent conditions for skiing and snowmobiling. Before traveling, please call ahead for the most current conditions.

Still looking for ways to enjoy the outdoors this weekend? Take part in the Checkpoint MN winter scavenger hunt, which runs through March 5. The 12 checkpoints are scattered throughout the state, from St. Paul to Duluth to Detroit Lakes. More than $50,000 worth of prizes are available, with more chances to win the more places you check in. Learn more at checkpointmn.com.

Grand Rapids

The Taconite State Snowmobile Trail has been regroomed following an additional 4-7 inches of snow this week. Conditions are considered good. The trail base measures 1-2 inches. Please note that there is active logging activity taking place between Mile 10 and the Clearwater Trail intersection. Also watch for logging near the South Bear Lake Trail intersection and south of the first Swampsider's intersection. These trails have a 1-2 inch base.

International Falls

The Voyageurs National Park snowmobile trails and portages are in good condition overall, however, riders should use caution when traveling the lake surfaces, watching for pressure ridges, rock piles, snowdrifts and fish houses. All ski trails are packed and tracked, and in good condition. The Koochiching State Forest Tilson Creek Ski Trail is packed and tracked, with a 5-6 inch base.
The southern region of the state recently received significant amounts of snow, and fair to good conditions are reported for skiing and snowmobiling in south central and southeastern Minnesota. Good to excellent cross country ski trail conditions can be found throughout northeastern Minnesota, with fair to good conditions along some snowmobile trails in the northern section of the state. Please call ahead for the most current conditions before traveling.

Northeast Region

International Falls

Enjoy the ease of snowmobiling on groomed surfaces at Voyageurs National Park. The trails are generally in good condition, and slush conditions have improved. Pressure ridge activity has lessened, but riders should still use caution when traveling the lake surfaces, watching for pressure ridges, rock piles, snowdrifts and fish houses. All ski trails are packed and tracked, and in good condition overall. The Koochiching State Forest Tilson Creek Ski Trail is groomed and tracked, with a 5-6 inch base. Skiers report good conditions, however, the trail is firm and fast. The Rainy Lake Visitor Center near International Falls has adult-sized skis available for rent and children's skis available for loan during business hours.

Hibbing

McCarthy Beach State Park is covered in roughly 5 inches of snow. The ski trails remain in good condition, with 1 inch base on average. Please note that the trails are hard and icy, and may be dangerously fast on the hills. The snowmobile trail remains in poor condition.

Ely

Total snow accumulation in the Ely vicinity is 10-14 inches, with a possibility of snow this weekend. The Tomahawk Snowmobile Trail and other area trails are groomed and in fair to good condition. Lake trails are also in good shape. The section of the Taconite State Snowmobile Trail running through the Ely vicinity is groomed and in fair condition; poor conditions are reported for the far west end of the trail. The base measures 1-2 inches in most areas, but riders are asked to use caution. Similar conditions are reported for the Arrowhead State Trail. Groomers have set tracks on Bear Head Lake State Park ski trails and conditions are good. The trail base ranges from 1-3 inches. The snowmobile trails running through the park are groomed and in fair condition, with a 2 inch base. Many area cross-country ski trails are in very good to excellent condition including the Hidden Valley Ski Trails, Trezona Trail, Babbitt Golf Course Trail, and the Birch Lake Plantation Trail. These trails have a 2-5 inch base. Don't miss Ely's Winter Festival taking place Feb. 5-15. This festival offers numerous daily events including live music performances, a talent show, ice fishing tournament, cross-country skiing under the moon, snowshoe hikes, winter camping and dog sledding demos, a snowmobile scavenger hunt, fish fry and spaghetti meals, an arts & crafts fair, and a variety of literary, educational and cultural arts events! Complete list. 218-365-7669

The trail base measures 8-10 inches. The Central Gunflint Trail ski trails are fully groomed for classic and skate skiing, and both are in excellent condition. Area snowmobile trails are in good shape, and groomers will be out this week sprucing up the trails for the weekend. Just south of Grand Marais, Cascade River State Park offers good conditions for cross-country skiing. The trails are groomed with a 1-3 inch base. The snowmobile trails are partially groomed and in fair condition. The base of both trails measures 1-3 inches.

Good to excellent cross country ski trail conditions can be found throughout northern Minnesota, with fair to good conditions along some snowmobile trails. Please call ahead for the most current conditions before traveling.

Northeast Region

International Falls

Enjoy the ease of snowmobiling on groomed surfaces at Voyageurs National Park thanks in part to the park’s gateway community snowmobile clubs: International Voyageurs, Ash River – Kabetogama Snowdrifters, and Voyageur Trail Society. The trails are generally in good condition, although some slush pockets are starting to develop on the lake surface. The visitor center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00am to 4:30pm. More information is available at www.rainylake.org

Hibbing

McCarthy Beach State Park is covered in roughly 5 inches of snow. The ski trails remain in good condition, with 1 inch base on average. Please note that the trails are hard and icy, and may be dangerously fast on the hills. Groomers plan to head out on Friday, Jan. 30 to freshen up the trails. The snowmobile trail remains in poor condition.

Ely

Total snow accumulation in the Ely vicinity is 10-13 inches. The groomer attempted to clean up the Tomahawk Snowmobile Trail but had to turn around due to a minimal base. Most of the trail, however, is in fair condition with a 2-4 inch base. Most other area snowmobile trails are in similar condition. Many area cross-country ski trails are in very good to excellent condition, including the Hidden Valley Ski Trails, Trezona Trail, Babbitt Golf Course Trail, and the Birch Lake Plantation Trail. These trails have a 3-4 inch base on average. Don't miss Ely's Winter Festival taking place Feb. 5-15. This festival offers numerous daily events including live music performances, a talent show, ice fishing tournament, cross-country skiing under the moon, snowshoe hikes, winter camping and dog sledding demos, a snowmobile scavenger hunt, fish fry and spaghetti meals, an arts & crafts fair, and a variety of literary, educational and cultural arts events! Complete list. 218-365-7669

Grand Marais/Gunflint Trail

In Cook County, just outside of Grand Marais up the Gunflint Trail, fresh snow has fallen most days over the last few days. The Upper Gunflint ski trails have a base measuring 8-10 inches, with most trails freshly groomed and in excellent condition. The Central Gunflint Trail ski trails are fully regroomed for classic and skate skiing, and both are in excellent condition. The trail base averages 9-12 inches thick, with 14-20 inches of snow on the ground. More snow is predicted to fall before the weekend; if so, the groomers will head out again so trails are in ideal shape for skiers. And just to the southwest, towards Lutsen, the Caribou Trail to Ski Hill Road has been groomed and tracked. The trail base measures 3-6 inches.

Duluth/Grand Marais

The northern section of the C.J. Ramstad/North Shore State Snowmobile Trail offers fair conditions for snowmobiling. The trail was packed this week from Laine Road to the Two Island River Road north of Finland, and the trail from Two Island River Road to the Gunflint Trail junction has been groomed. The trail base measures 1-2 inches from Laine Road to Finland, 2-3 inches from Finland to the Sawbill Trail, and 2-4 inches between the Sawbill Trail and Gunflint Trail junction. Local snow depth for the entire trail ranges from 3-18 inches. If you do go riding, please use extreme caution.

Most other ski and snowmobile trails in this region of the state are either in poor condition or remain closed due to a lack of snow.

Northwest Region

Williams/northwest of Baudette

Zippel Bay State Park ski trails are groomed and in very good shape with a 4 inch base. The snowmobile trails are also groomed, but conditions are reported to be fair. These trails also have a 4 inch base. Ten inches of snow covers the ground within the park.

Lake Bronson, far northwest corner of Minnesota

The ski trails at Lake Bronson State Park are groomed, and skiers report fair conditions. The trail base measures roughly 3 inches. The snowmobile trail running through the park is ungroomed, but conditions are considered fair. Local snow depth is approximately 5 inches.

Roseau

The snow pack has diminished to six inches at Hayes Lake State Park, however, the ski and snowmobile trails have retained a decent 3 inch base. Conditions are considered fair for both trails. Expect some icy sections along the way.

Argyle, northwest of Thief River Falls

Old Mill State Park is covered in roughly 8 inches of snow. The ski trails are groomed, but a layer of ice covers a 3 inch base. Conditions are fair. Similar conditions are reported for the snowmobile trails.

Bemidji

The ski trails within Lake Bemidji State Park are partially groomed, and skiers report fair conditions. The trail base measures 2 inches. The snowmobile trails remain ungroomed, but the gates are open and the trails are reported to be in fair condition. The ground is covered in 4 inches of snow.

Most other ski and snowmobile trails in this region of the state are either in poor condition or remain closed due to a lack of snow.

Central Region

All ski and snowmobile trails in this region of the state are either in poor condition or remain closed due to a lack of snow.

Twin Cities Greater Metropolitan Vicinity

Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Scott and Wright counties

The Valley Trail and Lesson Area cross-country ski trails at Elm Creek Park Reserve in Maple Grove are packed, tracked and in good condition for classic and skate skiing. All other trails within the park are closed until more snow is received. The sledding hill has also been closed. Rentals are available. At Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington, all 5 kilometers of ski trails with machine made snow are open and in good condition for classic and skate skiing. The natural snow trails have been closed. Lights remain on until 10 p.m., and rentals are available until 9 p.m. For additional information, contact the Three Rivers Park District.
