The Arthritis Walk is the signature fundraising event for the Arthritis Foundation. But it’s not just an event, it’s a celebration of a year-round movement to help prevent and treat arthritis.

The event is family-oriented and volunteers work all year to make sure you have a great time while raising funds and awareness for this disease. Arthritis is the number one cause of disability in the United States. One if five people have some form of arthritis. That’s over 50 million people who live with chronic pain! In California alone there are over 5.9 million people with arthritis including over 38,000 children under the age of 17.

Our rallying cry, Let’s Move Together® encourages people to get up and get moving. When you join us at the Arthritis Walk®, you’re not moving alone-you are becoming part of a community looking to achieve better health and change lives at the same time. We hope to see you there!

Animal Science laboratories at universities tend to have negative connotations, as far as animal testing for things like cosmetics or pharmaceuticals, but did you know you UC Davis has a Meat Laboratory where you can buy meat?

While looking randomly reading about steaks at local restaurants, I came across the topic of cooking your own, then the topic of where to buy. The recommendation to buy meat from a UC Davis lab intrigued me, so here’s what I found… The Department of Animal Science’s Meat Laboratory Cole Facility Building “C” is open to customers Thursday and Friday from 1:00 to 5:30pm.

The UC Davis Meat Lab is a federally inspected meat processing plant located on the UC Davis campus in the Harold Cole Facility for the Study of Biology of Large Animals. The Meat Lab is part of the Department of Animal Science and is used for teaching and research activities. It is a 5000-square-foot facility containing a multi-species kill floor, carcass coolers, processing room, cutting room, analytical lab, classroom, and freezers.

Prices range from $3.00 per pound for ground beef to $13.50 per pound for Filet Mignon. Beef isn’t the only thing available at the Meat Lab – you can also find Lamb (loin chops are $10.75/lb), Pork (ribs are around $5/lb), Sausage, other specialty items and seasonal orders like turkey. When visiting keep in mind that cash and checks are they only forms of payment accepted.

For more information, visit the UC Davis Meat Laboratory web site, or call (530) 752-7410

As you know, Sacramento is facing a pivotal choice. We can either move forward with an Entertainment & Sports Complex (ESC) project that creates thousands of jobs and billions in economic activity. Or, we fail to complete the ESC project, and experience the economic and cultural consequences of no longer being a professional sports city and a venue for hosting major cultural events.

The City Council is scheduled to vote on February 14th on whether to take the next step as we explore the Parking Public Private Partnership (P4) concept – a critical component in the ESC funding process. Community engagement has been the driving force of the Think BIG initiative, and Think BIG needs you, as leaders in our community, to amplify the message that we can only create jobs and economic development through development of an ESC – and that the P4 proposal is the pivotal piece in making the ESC a reality.

Specifically, here is what Think BIG is asking you to do: Contact your City Council member by email or phone and let them know you personally, as a community member and Citizen Architect, support the P4 proposal. Council information is included below.

Send an email to your networks, sharing our message and asking them to contact their City Council members.

Submit a letter to the editor in the Sacramento Bee (click here).

Agree to speak in support of the P4 proposal at the crucial February 14th City Council meeting. Yes, we know it’s Valentine’s Day – make it a family affair! We need your support!

As the City explores entering into a public-private partnership with a third-party parking operator, Think BIG has looked to data and lessons learned from other cities who have evaluated similar courses of action. Think BIG has reviewed and analyzed approaches taken in other municipalities, including Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. By incorporating lessons learned from other jurisdictions, the City of Sacramento will ensure that taxpayers are protected and that the City maximizes private investment that will create jobs and transformative economic growth for the Sacramento region.

Eat Well, Live Free is an adventurous, Sacramento food blog that focuses on healthy vegetarian and vegan recipes influenced by the seasons, locally grown food and family traditions. My husband, Marcos, and I, firmly believe that by eating healthy, humanely and in season, our minds and bodies are healthy and we live free. Most of the recipes are based on what is currently growing in our gardens and available at the local farmers market. I am on a constant search to find delicious and healthy recipes that satisfy all the veggies and carnies in the family.

Recent articles include recipes such as Orzo pasta salad with preserved lemon relish and Peanut butter banana breakfast smoothie, and a review of the vegan meatloaf sandwich at Dad’s Sandwiches. Along with the quality content, you will find some mouth-watering photos as well… For example, the following is from their article on Celery Root and Hazelnut Soup:

Toward the end of Beer Week (one of California’s largest celebrations of fine ales and lagers) on March 3, the Sacramento Beer & Chili Festival will be a convergence of live music performances, competitive chili cook-off, beer tasting and food indulgence – all in the name of raising art program funds for children in the Sacramento area.

Proceeds from the Sacramento Beer & Chili Festival will be donated to art programs for at-risk children and children of homeless families in Sacramento. In addition, donations will help fund the Adopt a School Art Program for Sacramento regional schools. The festival features live music by local musicians and a chili cook-off competition – consisting of three categories, Individual, Corporate and Industry. Beer tasting will be provided by local and regional brewers: Hoppy Brewing Company, Sudwerk, River City Brewing Company, Black Dragon Brewery, Track 7 Brewing Co., Sutter Butte Brewery, Ruhstaller Beer, Auburn Alehouse, Dust Bowl Brewing, Two Rivers Brewing Company, American River Brewing, Knee Deep Brewing, and Berryessa Brewing.

Founder & Executive Director of Sacramento Artists Council Susan Rabinovitz said, “This event is a great way to introduce new regional brewers, promote local restaurateurs, and support beer week while contributing to a nonprofit organization and its quest to raise funds.”

She added, “People will be able to have fun and experience beer week knowing their money is going to a great local charity to improve our community.”

Chili cook-off contestants can fill out an entry form on the event website or download and mail to Sacramento Artists Council. Contestants may choose to enter the Meat and/or Vegetarian division and as an Individual (no more than two people per team), or Corporate and Industry (no more than four people per team). Event tickets vary in cost – chili tasting only ($15 presale) or both chili and beer tasting ($35 presale). Tickets increase by $5 day of the event. Stop by for lunch and stay for dinner! No tickets, no fees, just lots of great food and drink!

Please note the SactoMoFo HoHoHoliday Brewfest at Power Balance Pavilion has been postponed until later in 2012. Maloof Sports & Entertainment, CBS Radio and SactoMoFo plan to hold a huge outdoor event, including beer tasting from terrific microbreweries all over California and other extras. Those who bought tickets can get a refund at the purchase location. You won’t need a ticket for the December 3 event; admission is 100% free: just dress warm, bring small bills and a big appetite and get your snack on!

The December 3 event is a winter food drive for the Sacramento Food Bank and the U.S. Marines Reserve’s Toys for Tots, so please bring canned or packaged dry goods and new unwrapped toys to donate. Santa will also be available for photos with both little and big kids for a small donation to a local children’s Christmas charity. See you under the freeway!
