MANIFESTATION

September 3-26, 2011

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 3rd 7pm-11pm

Painter Barry Gross and photographer Adela Holmes have collaborated to showcase their elaborate collections under the title “Manifestations”. Both, Gross and Holmes have selected works to show a wide range of different styles and techniques, something an art advisor would probably never recommend. It the art world it is essential for an artist to stick to a certain look or style in order to be recognized. In this show Gross and Holmes defy these limitations and show off their talents by displaying a wide range of styles and techniques. The reason for it could easily be misunderstood as showing off or telling the art world off. But it is much deeper than that. It is about the essence of the subject being immortalized in their art. The truth of the subject that is not imposed on by the artist, instead the artists let the subject be what it is; let is manifest itself. This approach to art is pure, it is untouched by trends thus it’s timeless and limitless. It is not made to attract a certain group or clientele; it has no target except for showing the essence of truth.

In the case of Adela Holmes, who is showing photography ranging from a cow in a field to a mysterious under water series titled “Sea of Love”; one being a very traditional black and white photograph and the other, a painterly abstraction showing movement. Two completely different styles but even though the photographic executions result in such different looks there is a feeling that bring all the works by Holmes to a common ground. One realizes the energy of the artist in all of her photographs. The common ground is silence, isolation, a very peaceful feeling, and in a way, darkness and beauty at the same time.

Barry Gross on the other hand, who has painted in oil for over 30 years, has an enormous range on canvas and paper. Gross builds up his canvas with oils and textures usually created by sand but he never knows what is going to happen and what the end result will look like. The marks from the textures and the different mediums dictate the progression and emphasize the end product. When one examines his paintings and drawings, one can feel the energy. They seem alive evoking our emotional instincts. For Gross it is important to create from the gut as it is for Holmes. Both artists are intuitive. “An artist becomes a real artist when he or she lets the true genius of the inner child continually be reborn” says Gross , “There is a mystery that consumes art and it’s not about what art is , it’s about what infiltrates the artists soul to provoke him or her to step beyond the boundaries and leave requirements in the dust.”

Another interesting aspect of this show is the price range. $20-$75,000. Yes it might sound a bit ridiculous but again it shows that these two artists are not catering to a particular audience. They just do their art worriless from the pressures of today’s complicated marketing strategies that so many artists suffer from.

Reception is on Saturday, September 3, 7-11pm at the Barry Gross Gallery, 3335 NE 32nd Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL. The show runs through September 23.

ART FROM THE HEART - The Art Experience

Preview: Friday, August 5th 6pm-9pm

Opening Reception: Saturday, August 6th 7pm-10pm

Art Studio Miami and the Barry Gross Gallery present Art From The Heart: The Art Experience, exhibiting the work of the children from Art Studio Miami alongside the passionate artists from EXPOSED The Art Project.

In June 2011 we premiered our first annual exhibition at the Barry Gross Gallery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Every year we will affiliate EXPOSED the Art Project with a charitable organizations to whom we will donate proceeds from the art sales. We also donate our time to the charities. The charity during the inaugural show was Art Studio Miami whose mission is to empower young minds by providing a safe location where youth are inspired and guided by artists, teachers and professional mentors who support the student’s education and career development through the integration of creative holistic arts.

Barry Gross spent several days giving art lessons to the children at Art Studio Miami in May. The students were able to experience Barry’s personal technique of incorporating textures and emotions into their work while using found objects from their own personal journeys.

The artwork resulting from that encounter will be on display at the Barry Gross Gallery August 5-20, 2011. Pre-Opening night on Friday August 5th will be celebrated by the children who created this work along with their families, Art Studio Miami affiliates, members of EXPOSED, and the general public.

Sales from the show will benefit and support Art Studio Miami to continue their programming for at risk youth. As well as sales of the young artist artwork, each member of EXPOSED the Art Project will donate one piece of art each to be sold to benefit the studio. The donation will include a drawing by Barry Gross, photography by Adela Holmes and Presscott McDonald and music by Neal Fox.

Barry Gross Gallery is located at 3335 NE 32nd St. Ft. Lauderdale off of A1A.

By John Hood & Photos by Presscott McDonald @PMPinc

The chat was fast and furiously fun. In a stairwell off to side of the summertime madness going down at the pool at Arkadia, DJ Irie, Lil Jon, and yours truly cracked wise, laughed loud, and caused a small ruckus. It was just us three, lensman Presscott McDonald, and ace handler Felicia Quaning. By the time we were finished, there was a break-off crowd of 50+ clicking away as if their day depended on it.

The occasion? Irie Weekend, when stars of stage, screen, and sport show their love for the Miami Heat’s official DJ. It’s all for a good cause, of course (Make-a-Wish), and it takes place in Miami’s hottest spots. Mostly, though, it’s a time for friends to get together again and remind each other what makes the world spin.

This year’s Weekend—the 7th—kicked off at Mokai, woke up on the links at (Melreese Country Club), segued through the Fontainebleau, then spent Saturday afternoon and night back at the resort’s latest great creation (Arkadia). Thursday’s launch was ostensibly private, which on South Beach means only 500 friends can attend. Jazzy Jeff and King Britt were in the booth, Alonzo Mourning (who’s got his own Zo’s Summer Groove coming up next month), LeBron James, Reggie Bush, and the like held court, and the beats didn’t stop till the proverbial break of dawn, despite the fact that a lot of folks were set to hit the links the next morning.

At Melreese the next day the mood was more club than country. Irie managed to mark 18 under par, the best score of the day even though he never left his cart (the advantage of being the host and bribing your caddy). I jest, of course. Irie’s got his golf game down, and so does the contingent that comes out to support him. Among those this year was Lil Jon, who brought along his son, DJ Young Slade. At 13, this with-it kid is already a veteran to many a mad throwdown. And he handled himself as if there’d be many more to come.

So it’s no surprise that Lil Jon was playing proud papa at Arkadia the next day. The Crunk Kingpin has a definite successor to his throne. What remains to be seen is how long it’ll be before the son unseats the father. Right now though they’re working in tandem. Lil Jon brings Young Slade to the party; Young Slade kicks it into overdrive.

Lil Jon is on the road too much to bring his boy everywhere of course. As our fast chat revealed, a couple days before his Weekend stint, Jon was in LA “hosting” a sceening for Lee Tamahori’s The Devil’s Double (“an amazing movie”). A couple weeks before that he was in Brasilia (“it was wild, man”). Next he’s in back Chicago (“we’re doin’ Enclave”), then it’s off to Australia for a full tour (“the first in four years”).

Up close Lil Jon is all smarts and candor. Sure, there’s some of that “Yeah!” that put him on the map, but it’s less boast than swagger. He’s a lean, keen music machine, and he knows he’s got the chops to prove it. Better yet, Jon’s genuine. That’s why he not only showed to support his good friend Irie on his momentous Weekend, but why he took time out to speak to just about anyone who wanted a minute, and why he did it all with such grace and cool. It’s also why Lil Jon brought along Young Slade. And why Young Slade is already living his bright future.

Whether it’s watching Flo Rida rock LIV or chatting up Lil Jon before he does the dizzy at Arkadia, it all makes for one wild Weekend in Miami.
