Chin up. Shoulders back. We can do this.

 

Life can be a struggle at times. Certainly people in the UK knew this during the rough years of battle during World War II. This is a variation of a poster designed in the late 30s or early 40s to remind people of how to manage adversity during a very difficult time.  Perhaps, like me, you need a little reminder now and then yourself. So let’s keep calm, shall we? Print this little poster and place it where you’re most likely to pause, take a deep breath and remember that you too can carry on.

I wasn’t careful enough when changing over to a new computer and forgot my ExtraSprinklesPlease files. And then thought I had them still. And then lost them.

Every time I think, Oh, maybe I’ll revise this graphic, and then remember, I cringe a little bit. But then I try to lecture myself like an old English nursemaid. Chin up. Come on now. Carry on. Then suddenly I’m designing those words into a new sign or card or something.

So that’s a good thing. The old art here is still available and I shall take a deep breath, grab my virtual crayons  and soldier on . . .

UPDATE: After writing the above, I had a call later that day from my daughter who’d just found out some disappointing news and was in need of a shoulder to lean on and a mother’s prayers. Perhaps I didn’t design this for myself after all.

Add a special touch to a Valentine’s gift card

Print on a paper of your choice – card stock, glossy photo paper or matte – whatever you like best. Trim around the whole shape of the envelope. Fold or score each of the four tabs, then fold the back of the envelope up, glue the side tabs and affix to the back flap.  After adding your gift card, fold and adhere your top flap using glue, a sticker, tape or velcro tabs.

Cherry on Top idea

Instead of a gift card, make your own coupon cards or blessing cards to give someone a special, more relational present instead.

In the crazy, busy, stressful…

Sometimes it focuses and quiets my mind to write a prayer rather than just speak one.  Of course I hope the words I’ve written have a similar affect on one or two others. If you can’t read the words well enough from this graphic, here they are:

Dear Father, in the crazy, busy stressful torrents of churning life, in the storming downpours, may you be a gentle rain, a calming brook, a deep and quiet river within us. May your voice be a summer’s breeze, a gentle lapping of waves on the shores of our soul. May you fill our hearts with peace like the whisper of wind caressing the meadow grass, like the cricket’s song welcoming twilight.

Originally I created this design to use as an illustration for an article I wrote about using words only in a digital scrapbooking layout, hence this is an unusual printable size-wise, measuring 8″x8″. Perhaps one day I’ll rework this for a more conventional frameable size. Meanwhile, it could be a nice refrigerator or bathroom mirror prayer!

]]> 5 Anne <![CDATA[Autumn]]> http://www.extrasprinklesplease.com/?p=372 2009-10-18T10:44:03Z 2009-10-18T10:41:52Z On my lunch hour recently I drove over to my Dad’s for a cup of tea and a sandwich. It was a glorious fall afternoon, the kind that comes with a brilliant blue sky and crisp temperatures.  I saw a little girl playing on the sidewalk – hopping on one foot, planting two feet, hopping again. Hopscotch is timeless, and it struck a poignant chord in me to see the familiar number-filled chalk boxes drawn on the pavement.  May there forever be sidewalks and little girls playing hopscotch.

That same warm fall day I passed a mailman walking through a neighborhood, up and down the small sidewalks to front doors, letters in hand, dressed in a blue uniform with shorts and knee high socks. Down the sidewalk a short ways I saw a mother pushing her baby in a stroller, out for an early afternoon walk. In an instant my mind tries to drink in all the details – the soft blanket tucked lovingly around the baby, the little pink bonnet on her head, the brilliant sunlight dappling the leaves overhead as the mother and baby make their way down a quiet, peaceful street.

The days have been mostly unseasonably cold since than. So I’ll just keep holding on to that memory that evokes such feelings of peace and tranquility, and I’ll keep trying to design things that produce similar positive responses as well.
