I decided to purchase a Playstation Vita.

I’m really happy with my decision so far. The last handheld I owned was a Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP, which replaced my (never used anymore) Original Gameboy. I mainly purchased it to use a rom kit to flash a bunch of rooms to take on the go. It never worked very well with most games and had unreliable software so it never got used much and I still have it.

It’s fully charged. But I only have Sonic Advance 2. The battery on the rom card is dead and I frankly couldn’t be bothered playing the same NES games anymore.

I wanted to get a PSP but the price never came down much throughout its lifespan. In fact, in December I looked around on the web and a used PSP 3000 was $220 to $300 bucks. A PSP 1000 was going for $130 used and missing a power cord. That’s nuts. FutureShop was advertising a PSPgo for $229 in December.

Obviously I decided to wait to get a PSVita for $249 in February. Especially when I heard you can play almost all PSP titles along with Cross Play and Remote Play. All cool features I really wanted to use – especially Remote Play – something I can use on my break at work using our free wi-fi. Not to mention that mind-bendingly gorgeous screen. It makes video games jump to life.

Simply stunning.

I also aquired Uncharted: Golden Abyss the following day. I decided on the most expensive Vita game because I had a time sensitive $20 discount with my receipt from FutureShop. So far I have only played through a few chapters and it’s very well done so far. There are, of course, a few control issues…camera as well. It’s become somewhat of a given with video games in third person to be a bit wonky from time to time in the camera department so I’m being pretty forgiving, but I also just don’t find it very distracting. The Vita hardware is very capable with this game in spite of the quite glamorous graphics you hold in your hand.

Super Stardust: Delta was my first Vita Playstation Store game purchase. As great as the Super Stardust HD version for the PS3. This one really shows off the OLED screen colour and brightness capabilities.

I downloaded Touch My Katamari and I’m having fun with this game as well. I’m using the standard analog stick control because I find it awkward to hold the Vita while using touch with this game. The stretch and shrink using the touchscreen is a novel idea and actually comes in handy from time to time.

OVERALL, I’m really impressed in spite of the obvious flaws and buggy software. Early adopters have to know at this point that these devices just get better over time as the software catches up with the hardware. After six years of PSP it was time for an update for Sony’s hardware and I think the PSVita is a great step in the right direction.

I can’t wait for the next round of games. In the meantime, I have a pile of games waiting for me.
