Young, Black and Artistic: 15 Black Artists on the Rise and Making Waves

The beauty of art is that
it's constantly evolving and being pushed to new heights with each new
generation of artists. A crop of young black artists, in particular,
deserve to be on your radar, adding immeasurably to the artistic dialog
with their unique visions and techniques. We've already covered under-appreciated black actors as well as some of the greatest black fashion designers, but now it's time to show some love for talented young visual artists.

Hailing from Nigeria to Tennessee, ranging from sculptors to
photographers, these 20 to 30-somethings are well on their way to making
names for themselves in the ultra-competitive world of visual art. Some
have been blowing up for a while now, others have been getting
attention at prestigious art fairs, and others are being selected for highly publicized events like an art exhibition curated by Shaq.
For Real

Do you want to

sell more of your art or craftwork at higher prices so you can spend
your time creating quality work rather than feeling you have to "mass"
 produce your
art in order to make a living... but don't know how?

Do you need a proven

easy to use plan to get your art or craft business going... but you feel
 intimidated and don't know

 where to

 start?

Would you like to have

name recognition and have customers calling you... but don't
know where to begin?

Do you want to turn your

passion for art into a very profitable part-time or
full-time business... but don't know how to do it?

Do you want to have all

of the above without a huge amount of effort or becoming a "pushy

salesperson" or an expert in marketing... but don't have a clue how
 to?

Want to know how to get
started in an easy step-by-step manner... but didn't know where to find
 this information?

If your answers were

"YES!" and of course I know they were

;), then you've come to the right place!
Let's be honest...You & I both know there's much more to earning a living as an

 artist than just
creating great art. Like it or not, you need to know how to sell it.

In fact, making the art is

the enjoyable part. But creating great art alone is not going to pay the

 bills.
The problem is that it costs

money to live and being a "starving artist" just doesn't

 cut it.
"Who else doesn't want to die
as a poor and unknown artist?"

Despite the fact that the paintings of Vincent van Gogh are being
sold for tens of millions of dollars today, he died poor and desperate
because his art didn't sell during his lifetime.

Isn't that a tragic fate for such an outstanding artist?

Learn how to become a successful artist by selling your artwork and enjoying the financial rewards today

Did you know, that Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali both became
multimillionaires in their lifetime because of their art sales? They did
not share the tragic fate of poor artists like Vincent van Gogh.

What is the difference between van Gogh and Picasso or Dali?
What made the latter successful AND rich so quickly?

Do you believe, that those ingenious artists became famous and
successful only because of their outrageous artistic capabilities?
Picasso and Dali were not just ingenious artists; they were ingenious in the promotion of their art as well.
Have you ever heard any of the uncounted anecdotes about Picasso?
Or the unusual public appearances of Dali? Those events didn't happen by
accident. Both of these artists did them on purpose as a way to market
their art and make themselves famous. Even today public relation experts
and professional advertisers can still learn a lot from their
successful PR-coups (famous contemporary artists like Jeff Koons or Damien Hirst know and apply their secrets, too!).

Do you want to sell more art and earn your well-deserved share of the profits, so you can make a living?

Do you have the feeling that you do not really understand
how the art market works? Do words like "selling" and "marketing"
rather frighten you?

Would you like to see your name in the media instead of
the omnipresent Damien Hirst, so that the people are calling you and
know your name?

Do you want to have an easy-to-follow plan to give your professional reputation and art business a huge lift?

Do you want to know why even mediocre artists become famous and successful, if they apply the right marketing techniques?

If your answer to any of these questions is "Yes!" and you want to walk in the shoes of Picasso and Dali, the eBook "Promoting & Selling Your Art" is the right choice for you.
your ready to become a master of spray paint art and begin painting
with spray paint, successfully selling your artwork and exhibiting in
art galleries, or just really enjoying your new hobby and learning to
paint in a way that’s really fun for you, this is the most important
letter you have ever read. Here’s why….

You’re going to learn all about the breakthrough street art program that will transform you into a skilled and fast spray paint artist
who can fascinate an audience in the street and make the kind of
paintings that really shine, draw attention, and sell like hot cakes.
The kind of spray paint artist who can create a whole galaxy in just
minutes as a hobby or for a living.

I want you to experience what it’s like to do a painting with spray paint in just 5 minutes
using only plates, spray paint and newspaper. To feel the flow as you
improvise to your favorite music and know very naturally just what you
need to do to create that painting the way you imagine it. To hear the
crowd applauding you and telling you how amazing you are as you show
your work. To feel the satisfaction of knowing you can paint anything
you want with skill and style. To feel the thrill of selling your
artwork on streets, in galleries and as a professional artist. Those
good feelings of showing your work to others and hearing those ooohs and aaahs.

Are you wasting your valuable time trying to figure out the basics by yourself ? Are you tired of having to put in so much time to learn to just be able to paint what you want? Are you frustrated by street art “instruction” videos that don’t tell you the real secrets? Are you confused about which materials you need to create the effects you really want? Are you sick of fighting with your spray paints and newspaper, feeling like you are getting nowhere? Are you tired of knowing you could do so much better if you only had some help!

Then follow along, because you have just discovered the answer to all your prayers!

Introducing the new Spray Paint Art Secrets home study and coaching program.

Your golden ticket to total success with street art.

The Economics of Black Art by Tyrus Townsend

“As the art market rebounds, we are seeing a surge in collectors seeking African-American Fine Art—especially scarce and important works. The sale began with intense competition for 19th-century paintings by Duncanson and Porter, and the momentum was sustained all the way to the final section, a celebration of Romare Bearden’s centennial year, where two of his collages from the early 1970s sold in the high five figures.” - Nigel Freeman, Director of African-American Fine Art at Swann Galleries, in a press release after the February 17,2011 Sale 2237.
Collecting art, especially works by African Americans and those in the Diaspora, was once revered as taboo and with little to no value for a serious collector. No longer considered a hobby, African American art has always played a tremendous role in the fabric of not only The United States but the world as a whole.

We found a great article at The Root website that covers his life story as an artist and celebrating his 100th birthday. We are grateful for the information they provided because Romare Bearden was a pioneer for all Black artists who have pursued careers in art today.

Romare Bearden, the most widely known African-American artist of the 20th century, was born 100 years ago, on Sept. 2, 1911. While exhibitions of his work are ongoing, this year has seen quite a few (pdf) remarkable ones. The U.S. Postal Service will also honor Bearden with a group of four stamps next month.
Just like his distant cousin Duke Ellington (the first buyer of a Bearden work), he has always commanded the respect of some establishment critics, while not convincing others. Ellington still faced prejudice-based insults from the establishment decades after wowing the critics.
Bearden, who died in 1988, has inexplicably been excluded from art anthologies and still receives eyebrow-raising, oddly phrased faint praise (such as from a prominent art critic recently). Like Ellington, Bearden mastered the most sophisticated new trends and techniques in his field but always hewed close to the African-American experience.
Bearden tried and excelled at various styles as a young artist and hit his stride in the mid-1960s, synthesizing Euro-American modernist, African and African-American traditions into an original style, making his greatest impact with photomontage and wide varieties of collage. One of his best-known works, The Block -- a sophisticated critique of the New York City building programs of Robert Moses, according to Romare Bearden in the Modernist Tradition -- is a masterpiece in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which has based educational programs around the work and created a cool Web page about it.

Some of the most powerful art has the ability to form bridges between generations and cultures. Mixed media artist Dubelyoo (pronounced W) has consistently formed such links between the worlds of urban and pop culture in works that address the sensationalism of celebrity and provides social commentary. In the process he has produced the largest touring urban art show in the U.S. titled “Art, Beats + Lyrics,” collaborated with Nike, Coca-Cola and Heineken and received critical acclaim.
Under the careful tutelage of Melody Burns, jewelry becomes a form of wearable art. Burns is the owner/designer of Kiini Ibura Jewelry, a line that has attracted stars such as Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and Angie Stone.
Catherine Edouard Charlot demonstrates that skill with her collection, HIMANE. The designs feature cocktail dresses, tote bags and pet clothes made from umbrella material and other recycled fabrics. She has even made a wedding dress using fifteen white umbrellas. Transforming fashion is not the only goal of Charlot. Her mission is also to change the way we live by making us more responsible for our environment with a greater understanding and appreciation of the power of recycling/upcycling.
West Texas native, Ealy Mays has challenged art enthusiasts with his brand of subtle satire and eclectic style. Mays, who currently resides in Paris, counts Jacob Lawrence, Jackson Pollock, Gary Hill and others as inspirations for his work which combines social commentary, the raw edge of street murals, classical forms and abstract imagery.
Who knew Michael Jackson was an artist? Well, on Monday, Michael Jackson’s kids made a rare public appearance with their grandmother, Katherine Jackson, and aunt, Latoya Jackson, at a ceremony to donate some of their late father’s artwork to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles.

This one is of the legendary Marvin Gaye. I decided to do something different with this one. I wanted to capture one of his unique yet soulful moments. If many of you did not know, Marvin Gaye was not only an incredible balladeer of the 1970's soul music era, but he was very much into the style and image of the times as well.

He dressed in suits but many of us remember the days of his wearing of the knit tam hats, dashikis and crazy cute platform shoes. The knit tam hats represented black pride just as the dashikis did, but the platform shoes represent a period in the 1970's disco era. Marvin Gaye could sing his way into your heart and have you rolling on the floor with is big silver, long laced platform shoes. He was a stylish crooner of his own right.

So, I think I captured one of those really cool '70's images that he so loved to show off.

Enjoy!

Resources: black art, african american art, black artists, african american artists, american art, fine arts.

These events include jazz concerts, author readings, poetry jams and more. Some of the attendees may include 'Earth, Wind and Fire, rappers, playwrights and pop stars.

Wine is expected to be served and Lady Michelle Obama expects those attending to "have fun and be loose."

The President and Lady Obama also plan to change out the White House's art collection as well. They have been said to be contacting and inquiring about art collections. This is what the Wall Street Journal states:

The Obamas are sending ripples through the art world as they put the call out to museums, galleries and private collectors that they'd like to borrow modern art by African-American, Asian, Hispanic and female artists for the White House. In a sharp departure from the 19th-century still lifes, pastorals and portraits that dominate the White House's public rooms, they are choosing bold, abstract art works.

How wonderful.
