Interesting urban design pops up in Toronto. A really creative approach to guerrilla gardening. The planter is made from layers of old advertising flyers!

Not only is it an awesomely efficient concept, but, according to Gas 2.0, 'using urine as a source of hydrogen to power the cars of the future is a serious undertaking and based on completely sound science.'
(Re)constructing Iraq

An illustration that the neoliberal dreamworld city plays the same soundtrack and architectural rendering style from Baghdad to Brooklyn.

As you can see from the comments posted, there's a conflation with the freedom to build luxury environs with larger, societal freedoms associated with democracy. But beyond the real estate justifications for the costs of war, will these new condos eventually be converted to homeless shelters or affordable housing, as we've seen in Crown Heights?

On the rise: "ghostboxes"

As the recession takes its toll on big-box retailers, empty buildings are piling up.
Many are trying to find creative uses for those near windowless monoliths. In Minnesota, one became a Spam Museum. In Texas, an indoor go-cart track. In Illinois, a church moved into an empty Wal-Mart. The new tenants, however, often generate less revenue for local governments. AP

The architecture of Star Wars

The Architects' Journal selected their top 10 structures from the Star Wars films.

Not quite a building, but the monumental quality of its form and its polygonal facades lend this Jawa Sandcrawler a building-like presence. These large treaded vehicles have inspired buildings from a Tunisian hotel to Rem Koolhaas' Casa de Musica in Porto.

The Uniform Project: A Dress for All Seasons

Sheena Matheiken's Uniform Project is a fashion trend I can support. With the help of clothing designer Eliza Starbuck, Matheiken is wearing a single dress every day for the next year, albeit with an inspired array of accessories, in what she describes as 'an exercise in sustainable fashion.'

Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds…
