November 2009 Flickr Trip

A post is is no long overdue! The November 2009 Flickr trip I go on almost every month with fellow photo enthusiasts from Jamaica on Flickr was on November 29. The main stop was Falmouth in Trelawny quite a long drive from Kingston up on the north side of the island between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. The trip was a resounding success with the bus we pooled together to rent barely managing to hold all of the gang.

I really didn’t get a crap load of sharable pictures but as usual the learning process continues. Quite a few new faces on this trip and a few of them had shiny new cameras. The shot posted above is one of my favourite from the day and is also one of the first pictures I took while waiting on breakfast, trouble is almost half the group has the exact or similar shot but I just fell in love with the reflections on the birds on the wet sand.

Another of my favourites can be seen below which was taken coming on to the end of the day at an old overgrown sugar plantation and debilitated great-house we found in the middle of nowhere. The great-house seen in the background of the picture below looks like it was beat up by the elements and kicked in the nuts by an earthquake.

Didn’t have many photo ops in the town center of Falmouth and it wasn’t as interesting as I expected. One of my few shots of note is of the courthouse in Falmouth.

October 2009 Flickr Trip

Last weekend was another awesome Flickr field trip where members of the Jamaica group on Flickr meet up, rent a bus and travel somewhere interesting within Jamaica to take pictures. This trip focused mainly on Clarendon. I was super lazy and didn’t video much of the trip but I really got some excellent photographs that I will be uploading to Flickr over the next few days.

Fun with Tilt-Shift – Kool Runnings

My last post with a tilt-shift photo was of the New Kingston Skyline. My second tilt-shift photo I’ll post to this blog is on Kool Runnings Water Park that I visited last year summer with friends. I decided to use an tilt-shift maker online tool and with some minor tweaking my result is shown below.

Jamaica Group August 2009 Trip Video

Tabletop Lighting Ghetto Edition Details

Last weekend I spend 2 days conceiving and”building” and awesome lighting setup so I can take higher quality pictures of the miniature figures I have been collecting. It was a great learning experience and following various online tips I used items I had around the house to build the awesome setup you see below.

It made a good practical lesson about lighting, shadows, posting, types of light, reflecting light, camera position among other things. Looking forward to doing more practical experiments like this because not only do I enjoy the puzzled looks from my mom and sister I am actually enjoying myself and learning a few things. It was good to stick with my plans and explore my interest in tabletop photography. Check out the details of what made the set up work and 2 sample pictures below.

cartridge/construction paper – background
plain white paper- reflector
old standing lamp with white paper wrapped around the bulb – main light and diffuser
clothespins x2 – keep the background in place
flashlight/paperweight – keep a section of the background in place
mop stick – help to angle the lap shade so the light is directed at the subject
ceiling light – second light
morning light from 2 windows and an open door – ambient light
fan – to counter wind through window and shaking the background
shoes box – to prop up mop as it wasn’t long enough to reach the lamp shade
hardcover book x2
regular tripod
tabletop tripod (used from my bed)
camera – Sony DSC-H9
other miscellaneous stuff

August 2009 Flickr Trip Pictures

The regular trips with my pals in the Jamaica group on Flickr is always an enjoyable experience. Numbers have been dwindling over the last couple trips due to the summer time traveling but we managed to get a good turnout on our trip on August 30th to Portland. We had already visited many of these location in a trip late last year so I used it as an oportunity to experiment some more and I am satisfied with the pictures I took.

Portland Flickr Trip Tomorrow

For the third time in 9 months the Jamaica group on Flick will be heading to Portland to take photographs. We are headed to the same area we went to last August and I managed to get some awesome pictures that I blogged about here and then again here. It will be good to visit some of the spots again especially the waterfalls so I can pply to experience that I did not have back then.

In more depressing news though I notice that the last couple trips have not been getting the full support of the group members. I’m hoping that this is due to the summer time and many of the members are overseas. Hopefully the numbers and participation will pick up in the coming months to the massive numbers we had earlier this year in April and May.

Jamaica group on Flickr July trip Video

The monthly photo outings I go on with the Jamaica group on FLickr is awesome. I have learnt so much on these trips and met some really awesome photographers. On the last trip I decided to make use of the video recording function on my camera and filmed some random footage of the trip that you can watch below.

The editing was time consuming but fun and this little experiment went to sell I might do this more on future trips so anyone reading my blog can have an idea of what happens on the trips I go on.

Long Exposure Project Experiment

The guys over at the Jamaica group on Flickr have an awesome project going on where group members are invited to go out and shoot a photo for our “Long Exposure Project” which ends on August 15th. At first I thought my camera wouldn’t be capable and didn’t want to enter but last night during a failed attempted to catch some Perseid meteor shower action which ended in failure because of light pollution and an imcapable cam and decided to have fun with passing traffic.

My sister was up late as she is on summer holidays so I recruited my willing assistant and we climbed unto the unfinished upper floor of our house. She’d scream to me whenever traffic was coming and I’d try to time my shutter release so catch the lights from passing cars. About a dozen shots and an hour later we have two decent(ish) shots for our labour.

It was a cool learning experience trying it for myself as well as looking at all the cool entries from other group members. The coolest of which was from David Madden who got a cool transperacy effect with his long exposure. I need to try this one day.

Fun with Tilt-Shift – New Kingston

I remember seeing examples of tilt-shift photography many months ago in a copy of a magazine I read. I searched only for tutorials on how to create that effect but just couldn’t pull it off properly in photoshop. I have now discovered an awesome free online tool that created title-shift photos automatically in seconds! I made the shots below.
