Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece, dominates the Attica periphery; as one of he world’s oldest cities, its recorded history spans around 3,400 years. A cosmopolitan metropolis, modern Athens is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece and it is rated as an alpha- world city.

Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato’s Academy and Aristotle’s Lyceum, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then known European continent.

The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon, widely considered a key landmark of early Western civilization. The city also retains a vast variety of Roman and Byzantine monuments, as well as a smaller number of remaining Ottoman monuments projecting the city’s long history across the centuries.

Theme Party

Time to get your hands on those old cupboards, closets and boxes up in the attic and get all the good stuff out! It’s time for some dress-up, so shall we?

We picked the most crazy topic to use as a canvas for your experimental costume parade and we do expect an extreme make-over.

As you have probably already found out, the theme for the 66th IS of EYP has been finally decided upon and it’s CIRCUS !

Now, we do also feel oblidged to provide you with some inspiration and get you in-the-mood beforehand. So, here are some small insights to look at. Don’t forget to spread the word! The best -most fashionable, original, colorful, dreamy, enchanting, scary, handmade- costumes are going to be rewarded generously! To begin with, we have prepared a small poster-intro for you. A larger series of picto-inspiration will be coming up from time to time, even during the session, until the party finally takes place, so do keep stopping by this page to have a look on new ideas. Also, don’t forget that you’ll also have the chance to participate when you get here with your own creations.

For now, keep up the prep, we’re almost there! : )

The story: The Perfect Organiser

So, here is how it started, a couple of weeks ago, the organisers team had its training on the upcoming Session (woohoo); we [all] gathered in the first of our accommodation venues, the camp in Loutraki and, thinking of you, we cut and pasted ideas, polished and varnished and so on so forth. A cloud of scattered little details that had to be blown into a firm grid. Always thinking of you, again. ; )

Which brings us to the next level, FUN. Because we had to stick it in, we thought we might try to be creative. We also thought, that, well, we might as well try to make ourselves known to you -and put some good words beforehand. Let’s not forget that, as improbable as it might be/get, we wanted you to know that you are entitled to expect the best. And so goes this video: the fruit of our self-improving creative brain-drawing.

So: Fun! in EYP. It is always there, for us will always be. For those of you who know, enjoy the video. For those of you who don’t (yet), watch and learn. Now, for all of you, remain seated, for the journey is about to begin.

The European Youth Parliament gathers 220
young delegates from 30 countries to Athens

Under the slogan ‘European Democracy 2.0, rediscovering democracy in its birthplace’ the 66th International Session of European Youth Parliament (EYP) will gather 220 delegates from 1st to 10th April in Athens to discuss solutions to the challenges Europe is currently facing.

The young delegates – aged 16 to 19 – will focus on delicate topics that are on the European agenda at the very moment: ranging from the future of economic governance in Europe and revolutions in the Arab world to the balance between digital access and the need for privacy. What better place for young people from 30 European countries to debate these vital issues than the Greek capital, Athens? The event starts in Loutraki with a weekend of teambuilding followed by fifteen committees discussing the topics and drafting resolutions, which will then be debated and adopted according to the rules of the European Parliament. The two-day General Assembly organized on the 8th and 9th April will convene at the Old Parliament House of Athens. On the 7th April the participants will also take part in the EuroConcert event to showcase the different musical traditions around Europe.

Among others, Member of the European Commission, Mr Janez Potočnik will address the opening of the General Assembly on the 8th April starting 9:30 at the Old Parliament House of Athens. The President of European Parliament Jerzy Buzek and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland have assumed patronage of the Session and will receive the resolutions. Journalists are warmly welcomed to report on the Session of the European Youth Parliament and are kindly invited to all events of the session.

Today the EYP is one of the largest European platforms for political debate, intercultural encounters, political educational work and the exchange of ideas among young people in Europe.
