APRIL FEATURE
Play It Forward

Play It Forward is a non-profit organization with the mission of helping musicians make the world a better place. This charity was recently founded by Steve Mazza, a longtime Counselor and Division Leader at Hampton Country Day Camp.

Steve founded Play It Forward to serve as a web-based platform where musicians could sell their albums in exchange for charitable donations to non-profit organizations of their choice. Currently, musicians featured on the site are raising money for the Leukemia Research Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Feed the Children, among others.

We are excited to announce that HCDC, along with the TLC Family of Camps, will be releasing an album of music written and recorded by ALL OF YOU! We are calling on all of our musically gifted parents, campers, and staff (past and present) to contribute original songs that they have written and recorded. Eligible songs may be previously recorded or can be written specifically for this project. Professional production is not a requirement.

Once we receive all of the submissions, we will compile them into a TLC Family of Camps album. Proceeds from the album will be donated to SCOPE, a nonprofit that gives the gift of summer camp to children from low-income families at ACA-accredited sleepaway camps, in celebration of its 25th Anniversary.

If you are interested in contributing a song, please e-mail Steve at steve@playitforward.com. And stay tuned – we will let you know as soon as the album is available for purchase/donation!

FAMILY CONNECT
MARCH FEATURE

Reel Sports Productions

Timber Lake West parent, Jeff Ross, had every teenage sports fanatic’s dream job – producer for major sports networks. With over 20 years of experience at ESPN and NBC Golf Channel, Jeff had been at the helm of productions like Stanley Cup Final, Daytona 500, Olympics, and Super Bowl – with 3 Emmy® awards to boot!

But last year Jeff said goodbye to network sports – and also to great tickets for major sporting events – for which his two sons Paul and Jonny, a 3rd year West counselor and Teen 2 camper, respectively, are still mourning. Instead, Jeff opted to try his hand at a labor of love.

Jeff’s new venture is Reel Sports Productions – a production company that creates video resume reels for prospective prep school and college athletes. He believes student athletes are so much more than the sum of their academic grades, stats, and team records. That is why Jeff loves working with these young athletes to help put a face on the stats and let their individual character and performance shine through.

Reel Sports combines home videos with video Jeff shoots himself, and then has the athlete ‘host’ their own reels. The result is a small, convenient package that can be electronically blasted off to recruiters and coaches.

If you would like to check out Jeff’s videos or want to learn more about his services, click here.

And if you have a child who is interested in pursuing a career in sports broadcasting, feel free to have them reach out to Jeff for any questions or advice. You can contact him through his website or LinkedIn page.

Mending Kids…

Dr. Jason Frischer is the director of the Peña Colorectal Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. His daughter, Elle, is a Sophomore at Timber Lake Camp and his son, Cal, will be participating in his first Rookie Day this summer.

Over Thanksgiving, Jason led a medical mission to the Bugando Medical Centre in Mwanza, Tanzania. The surgical team was sponsored by the non-profit organization, Mending Kids. The team volunteered their services to provide 15 children suffering from congenital colorectal malformations with life-changing surgeries & trained the local surgeon, Sister Massenga, a nun, to perform these surgeries in the future. As a result, many of these children who had previously been shunned and shamed for their conditions are now attending school for the first time.

Mending Kids provides free surgeries to children across the world and empowers local medical communities through training and support. And to that end, Jason and his team will be returning to Tanzania again next year to train and mend more kids.

Jason’s humanitarian work is closely aligned with the mission of the TLC Family of Camps Foundation – a not-for profit that is dedicated to promoting the health and welfare of children throughout the world. The Foundation is proud to help support Jason’s upcoming mission to Tanzania.

If you are interested in learning more about Mending Kids or donating to Jason’s mission, please visit www.mendingkids.org. Donations can be directed to “Tanzania/Dr. Frischer.”

We’re proud to roll out our second feature in our newest endeavor called Family Connect.
FEATURED NEW VENTURE OF THE MONTH

Artistic License

With the holiday season upon us, we’re excited to introduce Artistic License. Founder Bonnie Schwartz has been a Timber Lake Camp mom for more than ten years. Her sons Scott and Marc were campers until they graduated – and this past summer Marc (now back as a counselor) served as the Color War general. Bonnie, who has always had an artistic flair, started her own company for which she creates art from license plates.

Each picture that Bonnie creates has its own history and tells its own story. She has created customized logos of prominent celebrities, sports teams, university mascots, comic book heroes, automotive motifs and most recently has figured out how to capture any portrait. You will be amazed at what Bonnie can create with license plates.

If you’re looking for a truly unique holiday gift, not to mention an extraordinary piece of art, check out Bonnie’s website by clicking HERE. She can do anything custom and is a pleasure to work with. You’ll be thrilled with the results AND you’ll be connecting with a long-time member of our TLC Family of Camps!

FEATURED NEW VENTURE OF THE MONTH

The Chord Club by Billboard

Tyler Hill Camp parent, Ian Behar, becomes the first to submit a “new, exciting and unique” venture to our FAMILY CONNECT blog with the opening of The Chord Club by Billboard, a state of the art recording studio, recreational music school and private event space. Along with his partners, Ian is proud to showcase this 5,700 square foot studio, located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side (207 East 94th Street) JUST opened and TLC Family of Camp members are welcome to take advantage of an exclusive VIP PASS to the studio.

As described by The Chord Club:

“The Chord Club is designed for the child who dreams of becoming the next music sensation. The facility consists of two large recording studios, private classrooms and a sunlit event space – perfect for high-octane birthdays and memorable milestone celebrations. The class offerings are modern, edgy, and driven by current music trends, designed for families with children from ages 5 months to 17 years. In addition to scheduled classes during the week, the studio offers one-on-one private music lessons (voice, guitar, bass and piano), recording studio sessions and unique event experiences, all led by notable and passionate professionals in the music industry. As an example, Hailee Steinfeld was just in the studio rocking out with her fans. Their DJ classes are off the charts and the venue is a great place to create the coolest birthday party celebrations in town!”

In celebration of its opening, The Chord Club invites TLC Family of Camps families in for a complimentary trial class during the months of December or January and priority class registration for their Winter Semester. Families will receive access to The Chord Club’s “VIP Services” upon booking a private party in the space.
Dear Camp Families,

The end of camp is always particularly poignant for me. HCDC is not just a summer experience it is really a “home away from home” for Dave, Jane and me, all our staff members and for our camp families. It seems like it passes in the blink of an eye but we remember our camp experience forever.

An essential component of our campers’ summer experience is their daily activities. Our newly expanded Club Program provided the opportunity for kids to make choices independently and to commit to their decisions. So, for example, if campers wanted to strengthen their skills or explore a special interest they could engage in activities such as Tennis Club, Spy Club, Tee Shirt Design Club, Circus Club or BBall Skills Club along with many others. Watching the Cheerleading Club have a cheer off before the entire camp was great for them and fun for us. Our state of the art Low Ropes Course attracted the attention of virtually all campers, from our tots to our preteens. While the addition of our Sports Academy, which gave campers an opportunity to develop new athletic skills and fine- tune existing ones, was a huge success. We are especially proud of our seniors (4th and 5th graders) who participated in our food drive by working directly with the East Hampton Food Pantry to help organize and distribute food to the needy and homeless.

Over the years HCDC has developed certain traditions that have become part of our camp fabric. The kids have come to know and enjoy our Friday Pow-Wows, our Dance- Offs and our weekly bus competitions., Who will be next years winner of the Best Bus Mascot? We may have put the Applause-O-Meter to rest for the summer but it is sure to reappear in 2016! Pizza Wednesdays are an all- camp favorite. We hope that three year old Charlie, announcing “Busses on the Move” will continue to hone his skills as the HCDC Bus Monitor at parent pickup. The “We Want Bracelets” chant is certain to ring in our ears until the New Year. And of course, no one will forget the dance rhythms of DJ Krazy Kane. But front and center this summer was our “Disco Countdown”, thank you six year old boys for introducing this new HCDC tradition.

A special HCDC “Hats Off” to our terrific and loyal camp staff who brought positive energy, sensitivity, caring and humor to this summers program. Watching them encourage a camper to pass the deep water test, giggling with a child over an untied shoelace, helping them traverse the low ropes for the first time. Moments like these were especially gratifying to me. Every summer presents its unique challenges, this years staff displayed loyalty, perseverance and commitment which we both applaud and appreciate.

The end of camp is always bittersweet, putting friendships and relationships, both between the campers and with their counselors, on hold. But the “off season” gives us all a chance to look forward to next summer. It is our hope that the camp experience this summer has given our campers an increased sense of self esteem, self confidence and resilience, this is what we strive to achieve.

We are already working to make next summer even better than this summer . If you thought that this summer was great, next summer is going to be “great so great!!”

And so until next summer, wishing everyone a great school year and a happy and healthy start to 2016.

Doris, Dave and Jane

With their flagship location on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, and a second location in Westchester, we are very excited to be partnering with Applause this summer to share their love of the performing arts with our Hampton Country Day Camp families for our Pre-Camp and Post-Camp programs.

Applause will be sending a team of their top instructors to provide musical theater and hip-hop workshops for our 1-Week Pre-Camp Program (June 22nd – 26th) and our 2-Week Post-Camp Program (August 24th – September 4th) this summer at Hampton Country Day Camp. Through acting and singing with a director and musical director, campers will develop their imagination, creativity, articulation and vocal skills. Under the guidance of an experienced teaching artist, they will also work on strength, coordination, and rhythm through hip-hop dance classes!

Interview with Jessica Trager, Director of Operations at Applause
What is your background in performing arts?

Believe it or not, I was a student of Audrey Kaplan’s (owner and founder of Applause) first class in 1995 when the company consisted of 20 students. Audrey introduced us to cutting-edge and current material while teaching a curriculum that developed not only theater skills but also life skills. I developed a passion for theater and dance although it was never my interest to become an actress. After graduating from Binghamton University and working in the cooperate world, I felt that something was missing and found my way back to Applause.

How do you select your teachers?

All of our staff members have worked as professional performers at one point, and go through an intense audition and training process with us. Many of our current teachers are working on Broadway, television and in film. We believe that having teachers who perform professionally enhances the education our students get and keep our curriculum exciting and up-to-date. Seeing their teachers in shows and television inspires our students.

What can you expect to get out of a week-long camp with Applause this summer?

You can expect to have a ton of fun! You will work hard, bond with cast members and feel the exhilaration of performing on stage.

Do the campers continue with Applause during the school year?

Most of them do! We offer a variety of performing arts after-school classes from Musical Theater, to Hip-Hop dance, to On-Camera class, and eventually fully produced musicals and straight plays.

What’s your favorite part about working at Applause?

We are the only program in New York that offers classes from 0-18 years. I love seeing our students grow up in the program. We see babies start in our Mommy & Me music classes, continue into our pre-school and after-school classes, and then return to work here as young-adults. We know all of our families by name, it really is a community.

What is Applause’s teaching philosophy?

It is our mission to foster a love and appreciation for the performing arts, whether as a performer or just a fan. We have very high standards and push our students to be hard workers, yet it is not important to us if they choose to pursue a career. We have seen many of our students excel in our classes and find success that they did not find in other programs.

What makes your program different from other programs?

I think the fact that many of our teachers started in our program and have come back to teach, make our program different from others. It really is a family here. I’m proud of the fact that Applause has nurtured such talented people who care so much about their experience here that they wanted to provide the same opportunities that they received to the next generation of performers.

As we approach spring, our office at HCDC is abuzz with phone conversations with parents of campers and prospective campers in which a common theme is how their young children entering camp for the first time can be best prepared for their camp experience. While we find that a child who has had some activity independent from his/her parents will have an easier time assimilating into the new camp environment, it is not essential and our Stepping Stones Program easily accommodates children with varying levels of independent experience.

Our Stepping Stones Program is designed to create a day filled with exciting and enjoyable activities for our 2.5, 3 and 4 year olds. However, it is also formulated to prepare your child for his/her transition to a school environment.

As a new Stepping Stones camper, your child will be exposed to a stimulating program that will include daily activities designed to develop, encourage and enhance his or her social, physical and cognitive skills. Many of the activities that our campers will experience and the skills that they will develop in our Stepping Stones Program will help to provide the foundation for their success in that all important first year of school.

Working with our nursery and preschool campers provides us with the exciting and satisfying opportunity to be part of your child’s essential growth process. We would love for you to learn more about the HCDC Stepping Stones Program and we encourage you to visit our Stepping Stones page.

Remember, summer is just around the corner!

Hampton Country Day Camp is excited to announce that we have partnered with The Baseball Center NYC to provide top-quality baseball instruction for our Sports Academy, CLUB Baseball Clinics, and Pre-Camp Sports Program this summer!

Located on the Upper West Side, The Baseball Center is Manhattan’s premier baseball facility, boasting a 15,000 square foot training facility that serves as the perfect home base for its various programs and clinics. Staffed with an elite roster of professional coaches, the goal of every Baseball Center instructor is not only to develop young ballplayers into advanced students of the game, but also help them grow as individuals, teammates and leaders – parallel values to our STARFISH program!

We had the chance to sit down with Michael Lombardi, Executive Director of The Baseball Center, to learn more about how he became involved with The Baseball Center, their philosophy on coaching kids and what we have to look forward to this summer!

What is your background?
I grew up on Long Island, playing soccer and baseball at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, NY. I graduated in 2000 as a Friar. Throughout my childhood, I also took dance classes (tap, jazz, and ballet) from age 2 up to age 20.

My youth sports career included many town and club baseball and soccer teams located close to my home. Once I hit high school, more well-known, nationally recognized baseball organizations came into play. I am a Bayside Yankee alum, having played for President Marc Cuseta for three years.

I graduated from Georgetown University in 2004 where I was a four-year starter on “The Hilltop” as a switch-hitting catcher and was fortunate enough to make the Big East All-First team in 2004 (the first Georgetown player to do so since 1996) and Big East All-Third team in 2003. I was a member of the Rawlings Northeast All-Regional Team in 2004, named a “Johnny Bench” award Semi-Finalist in 2004, and earned Team MVP honors in 2002 and 2004.

My lifelong dream of playing professional baseball came true when I signed with the Phillies in June of 2004. That year, I played in the Gulf Coast League (Rookie Ball – also known as the “Gulf Roast League” since all games were played at noon in Florida) and was later promoted to Low-A Lakewood at the end of the season. In 2005, I played in Batavia, NY as a member of the Muckdogs, (Short Season – A), Lakewood again as a member of the BlueClaws, Clearwater Threshers (High-A), and Reading Phillies (Double-A).

For the 2007 baseball season I worked as an intern in the Baseball Operations department of the New York Mets, preparing all of their statistical analysis and packets, opposing team information, and the like. It was one of the best learning experiences of my life.

When did you start The Baseball Center and what inspired you to do so?
I became very entrepreneurial in college, and I wanted my “life-after-baseball” to consist of running my own business. In March of 2009, I applied for and became the Head Baseball Instructor here @ The Baseball Center and the rest, as they say, is history.

I was named Executive Director back in July of 2011, and ever since, have been entrusted to lead and grow The Baseball Center’s brand and its staff of about 35 people. I am extremely fortunate to have been given the opportunity of working within an industry in which I have grown up.

What are a few different types of programs you offer during the year?
The Baseball Center is the only full service indoor baseball and softball training facility on the island of Manhattan. Our core program schedule consists of our year-round Junior Slugger Program for players 2-3 years old, our After-School Program for players 4-13 years old, Outdoor Leagues, Private lessons, Batting Cage Rentals, Birthday Parties, Corporate and Charity Events, Winterball, School Vacation “Diamond” Camp, Summer Camp, and the NYC Stars Travel Baseball Program.

What is your philosophy/approach on how to coach kids?
Our core philosophy centers on the relationship between our coaching staff and each player, no matter the age. We have the most engaged and best trained coaching staff in the city, hands down.

Each instructor learns to “promote the best possible experience” by instilling the core values of our mission statement: “Enriching the lives of children through the education of baseball and softball: incorporating teamwork, skill, communication, self-esteem, and sportsmanship.”

What makes your program different than the numerous other baseball programs out there?
Too many coaches are coaching for the “Win,” and not working hard enough to develop the whole individual. Our teachings focus on each player’s Growth and Development, from helping a Junior Slugger improve fine and gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination to teaching an NYC Star Travel baseball player the fundamentals of turning a double play.

What qualities do you value most in coaches who work for your organization?
We value coaches whose first priority becomes the safety and well-being of our players. We have an unbelievable opportunity in front of us to teach young players how to play this game correctly, and we’ll do all we can to achieve this. Instructors can’t just be great baseball players; they have to be great communicators as well.

What can camp families expect their kids to get out a week-long camp with The Baseball Center this summer?
Great instruction, immense hard work, and tons of fun! We are thrilled to partner with Hampton Country Day Camp – We hope the kids are as excited about The Baseball Center joining the team as we are!
