GaptoothDiva - Dollar Store Makeup Haul for Beginners

I decided to help a few of my friends out, who aren't really into makeup only because of the price and cost associated with most products. Everyone doesn't have a budget for cosmetics, so they choose to opt out of participating in wearing them. I totally understand. So in an effort to cater to my Recessionistas and Budget-Friendly Divas, I put together a video of some cool makeup finds that I snagged from my local Dollar Tree in RVA.

The Motivation: No one should be trying to decipher your beauty regimen, unless you want to explain that. Use whatever products fit your budget and your style intent. :-)

A Cool Way To Organize Your Earring Collection Using An Old Picture Frame

I recently moved to a smaller space and without all the vertical room I had been used to, it became harder and harder to find places to put my makeup, accessories, and glam must-haves. I already kicked the Hubs out, so his stuff his being stored in another bedroom (sorry). However, I still find myself desperate to find space. I decided to make some wall art with my accessories, so that I'm not only filling an empty wall, but also organizing some of my earrings and creating a display.

I took an old picture frame, with the picture still inside. I chose this frame because its basic and black, but the picture is cohesive with my bedroom decor. Through all the earrings, I think it would be sort of cool to see the silhouette of this African styled vase.

To add some more drama, I decided to take an old scarf that I no longer wear and wrap the photo into it. This will make it easier to hang all the earrings without putting holes in the picture. Before I could do that, I have to break apart the frame, glass, and picture from each other.

I wrapped the old scarf around the perimeter of the picture and cardboard before I placed the frame back on. I made sure the scarf was tightly wrapped, so that it didn't sag, making my earrings hang low. You can tie it into a know in the back or staple it. I chose to do both, because I don't plan to take this down for a while, so it needs to be secure. Also, take into consideration how many earrings you plan to put on there. I have quite a few, so I need to be sure this baby will stay up.

After securing the scarf, I placed the frame back on and careful ensured that no extra fabric or material was hanging off. Notice there are different layers. That's OK, it makes it easier for you to see your earrings and where they are hung, once you place them on the frame.

This is what it looks like hung up without any earrings on it. I can still see the picture behind the scarf material. Pretty cool so far.

Step back and admire it... alrighty then, LOL.

This is what it looks like once you add your earrings to it. I chose to put the heavier ones towards the bottom, so they wouldn't get tangled. I also like to seperate my earrings by color and tone. The more I place on there the less distinct the pattern is, but you get the idea. Make sure not to overlap them too much, because you don't want to tangle the earrings or pull the scarf too much.

I enjoy looking at this everyday. I decided to put my clip-on and small earrings in the organizer to the right of the frame, so I wouldn't waste space. The more larger and artistic earrings are reserved for the frame.

My Spring Low Priced Nail Picks

So Spring is finally here and it's time for us to turn up the volume on our go to colors and hues. I don't know about you, but in the winter black and gray reign supreme in my wardrobe. I can't help but fall back on loud colors, no matter what the trend is, because the weather just puts me in that mood. However, Spring is my time to bust out of that shell and step into brighter more "girly" territory.

In my quest to share beauty tips and tricks for those of us who don't have mountains of money in the bank, I found some really cool and trendy nail colors at a local tween store. Yes, I said TWEEN... only because they sell mostly merchandise that I would have wanted at 12 - 15 years old, LOL. However, if you want to save money, often you have to step outside of the box.

I recently visited FiveBelow in Chesterfield Virginia and checked out their beauty section. In their #5BNailshop, they had Funky Fingers nail polish 3 for $5.00 and Fresh Paint nail polish for $2.00 each.

Nicka K. Lipstick Review

For the spring season, I decided to step my lipstick/lip gloss game up and try my hand at different colors and shades. I've always been the typical pink, clear, and skin tone chick when it came to my lips. I guess I was cautious about playing with different colors. I'm more into eyeshadow, anyway. However, last fall & during the winter I tried the bold red lip trend and I absolutely loved it. So, on my quest to being frugal and fabulous, I purchased five lipsticks by Nicka K for $0.99 each at Regina's Beauty Supply in Richmond, Virginia. It was a steal! Here is the review of my latest purchase of what I experienced. Of course I should have took pictures of the shades on my lips, but once I forgot three out of five, I just called it a day.

These are the shades from left to right

Vibrant Orange - Probably the safest out of all of them and my 2nd favorite new shade to try. I loved it. I got a couple of compliments on it and a few references to a M.A.C lip shade of the same hue. No, ladies, this was less than a buck. *snap*

Moody Blue - My dumb a** thought this shade was actually blue. Could you believe how excited I was to find blue lipstick for $0.99?? To my surprise, it's actually a mood lipstick that changes colors depending on your mood (or the temperature of your lips). Needless to say I'm always in a dark purple-like mood. A bummer, but not a complete loss. I bought a blue lip-liner and smudged it in.... instant blue. Yeah, I'm bad.

Bubble Gum - I'm used to this shade and it's nothing new. I should have known better but I actually was expecting more pink than an icy tone. Blah... boring.

Brilliant Fuchsia - I love it, but I was expecting a brighter shade of actual fuchsia. It comes on very burgundy, which for my taste is too damn serious of a lip color for my face.

Honey Buff - This by far is my favorite of all of them. I love the creamy nude look on my chocolate face. It really pops with a smoky eye application, which I really like.

I can't wait to share more of my finds with you. Remember it doesn't always have to cost a lot or be the latest and greatest for you to at least try it out. This is great way to try something new, without wasting a whole lot of money. If anyone says anything negative about it, tell 'em "F" you style!

Why I Decided to Stay Natural and Burn The Weave

In this video I describe my journey with Natural hair and my feelings towards lace front wigs and weaves. I don't understand why I hate them so much now. I don't know if it's my pregnancy hormones or just maturity, I just can't stand it any longer. Now every time I see a girl with a head full of weave or a wig on, I wonder if she is insecure about her natural hair. I feel much more beautiful, because what you see is what you get. I don't have to hide or surprise anyone. I can't wait to share more with you in the future.

Great $1.00 Thrift Store Dress For My Pregnant Belly

This was a great Thrifting find. I purchased this dress from the Love of Jesus Thirty Store in South Richmond for only $1.00! It's long enough so I can wear tall boots. It's not too big, but comfy enough for my growing belly. I wore it out and it gained me so many compliments and some inappropriate stares by some men, who I thought weren't quite sure if they wanted to holla or not. LMAO. So pathetic... uggh pregnancy.

I really like this great dress. I paired it with a scarf and a beaded necklace I scored at a vintage shop in Carytown (which at the moment I can't remember, so forgive me). I also wore my favorite boots of the season. It was a great day. Great to finally be back. :-)

I decided I'm committing to my natural hair, so this was the final day of the weave. See how depressed I look with it on. It just feels heavy and unnecessary. So away it goes. Might burn it and post the pics online. Who knows.

Thrifted, Gifted, and Borrowed

So I'm getting my Diva back, especially with the new hair and larger boobs, lol. I'm still not displayng my stomach proudly, like I should be. It's taking some getting used to. Someone told me to pose like this to hide it. I think it just makes me look like I have a bad back. You probably can't tell by this picture, but I actually lost 15 lbs. But I think it all went to my chest. This top and cardigan was thrifted from The Second Debut Goodwill store in Carytown Richmond. I got both of them for $5 each. Their sales are amazing.

This is a ring that Boonie bought for me. Now don't trip, it was only $1.99 (really), but what it symbolizes is that nocturnal spirit of the owl, watching over the night. It was deep when he gave it to me, so don't laugh. I love it a lot and can you believe it hasn't turned on me yet!

My doctor would kick my ass if she knew I was still wearing heels while I'm pregnant. Under strict orders she asked me to stick to flats, but that lady doesn't know me like that. So every once in a while, I will sneak and wear my heels. I'm bad, I know. Boonie bought me these as well last year, said he wanted to see me in some tall boots. The man got what he wanted!

I love taking his stuff and making it look good on me! I don't own a watch, that will be changing soon. I always wanted one, but it never seemed practical. I never look at the watch and secretly... I can't tell time on analog watches, LOL. I can only read it if the time is like 12:00, 12:30, 5:00, 5:30, etc. Anyway, so what! I live in the year 2012 and everything is digital. I have a cell phone, and that's my excuse. Damn, ya'll are so mean!

Between being nauseous, tired, cranky, hungry, and horny.... I can't think straight. However, the gaol is to inspire you that through all that, You still can feel good inside and out... or at least look good while you feel like crap on the inside. Watch me as I grow and complain dolls. It's about to be a bumpy ride. xoxo

New Year & New View

So it's finally 2012! Thank God, the year has begun again, now everyone has a chance to change from the asshole they were before, to an even better and smarter one today. I'm just kidding ;-P

This year I'm going back to my un-be-weavable style. I'm trying to retain as much heat as possible. Being natural and bald was cute, fun, and empowering but my pregnant behind is cold now! So, I'm still repping for #teamnatural, I'm just doing it under all this hair at the moment. Don't want to get sick and I'm not a dedicated hat wearer.

As you can see I'm rocking the cobalt blue leather retro jacket from my first haul video on New Years Eve. I even played in the blue eyeshadow and pink lipstick, too. I'm such a freakin lady! I got so many compliments on it at church and my friend's party that I forgot to take more pictures. Does that even make sense? I'm really just trying to hide my preggo belly, but I'll leave you with that excuse. LOL

I must admit that I wasn't posting as much as I should have because I was sick (first trimester sucks), depressed, and tired as hell, which is not your problem. So to avoid filling the Internet with even more emo post, like those annoying chicks complaining about their deadbeat boyfriends, I just remained silent. It's better to deal with your ish, versus annoying everyone and never coming up with a solution. Either way, I'm back and getting much better. I'm excited about this New Year and can't wait to get into more stuff that will inspire and motivate.

DIY - Custom T-shirt Scarf w/ Beads and Shells

#1 - Get an old t-shirt (preferably one in a color you like), some old or broken costume jewelry and a ribbon. I used an old beaded necklace with a shell pendant to make my t-shirt scarf more natural and tribal styled. No need to iron the shirt, it's not that serious. LOL

#2 - Cut the sleeves off the shirt without disturbing the bottom half. Just cut straight across the chest. I chose to keep the designs in the middle to add to the style of the scarf.

#3 - Also cut along the bottom where the seams close up on the ends.

#4 - From one side of the t-shirt begin cutting towards the other end, without going all the way. Cut thin strips (but not too thin or the t-shirt will rip after the next step) Cut straight lines if possible so that each strip is even in width. Do not cut all the way there should be less than an inch left on the other end.

#5 - The t-shirt should look like this once all the shirt has been cut into thin strips. Notice at the top there is still a small area where the t-shirt was not cut all the way. This will be your base.

#6 - Pull each strip gently but far to stretch out the material. Once the material has been stretched, it will give a rolling effect turning each strip into a thin rope like string. Do this to each strip, being careful not to rip and strings. Gather the loops together at the base ( the portion of the t-shirt you did not cut) and it should look like this.

#7 - Add your ribbon to the base to cover up the material. You can add beaded necklaces and shells to it as well, like I did. This can be worn as a necklace with a plain t-shirt or used as a stylish and unique scarf. You can double it around your neck for a bib necklace look or let it hang low, like a chain necklace. I got many compliments about this piece, and I love it. You can use any style t-shirt. Of course the bigger the shirt, the bigger your t-shirt scarf will be. Just go nuts. Next time I will use a sweater to see if I get the same effect.

My Thanksgiving Animal Style & Unknown Gift

So on Thanksgiving, I decided to go along with the animal print trend and thrift a cheetah print dress from Goodwill Second Debut in carytown. I got the dress for $7, and it wasn't even on sale. I also bought this fabulous belt That i turned into a bib necklace for only $5. Can you believe this was a belt? OMG! I added a gold tone two finger ring I got for only $1.99 and my gold tone cuff that I bought for $2.50. The earrings were from the haul video I did for Diversity Thrift a couple of weeks ago and they only cost $0.50. I finished the look with a necktie as a belt, because little did I know I wasn't bloated that day (I was pregnant). And of course my favorite boots this season because I was opting to forgo the heels for a while.

Look at me trying to profile with this belly, I'm such a Diva.

Saw this men's sweater at Fashion Metro in Southside Plaza in South Richmond, Virginia. It was $34.99 regular price, now on sale. Don't tell me that your man can't find decent clothes anywhere. I'm tired of seeing the "hood" over sized t-shirts on your skinny boyfriends. Step your man's game up, so he doesn't look like a bum.

and by the way.... Du-rags outside of the house is a NO-NO, your man will look seriously ratchet, if you allow this. I'm done.

Fall Inspired Blazer and Legging Look w/ Thrifted Vintage Hugo Boss Polka Dot Blazer and Brown Boots

This is the vintage Hugo Boss blazer from the haul video I did of Diversity Thrift not too lomg ago. I paired it with some brown stir-ups (leggings with the hooks at the bottom) which fit very comfortably. I also paired it with a cream half sleeve basic t-shirt and a pair of brown riding boots that I love. The heel isn't too high, so I can walk around in them all day long. With my hair color this outfit was a sure hit. I also wore the vintage gold clip-on earrings from the haul video as well that set me back only $0.50 a pair. I attached a brown bow to my waste to act as a belt and threw on the gold bangles and a gold leave necklace that I made out of old jewelry that I had laying around.

It's a simple outfit that really received a lot of compliments on Saturday. I looked relaxed and comfortable, but I felt like a million bucks. Like one of those outfits where you can't tell if I'm just being modest or if I'm really living off of modest means. Either way, I was fab-u-lous!

GaptoothDiva - Ginger Blonde Hair Color Tutorial For The Bald and Beautiful

I decided to do a hair color tutorial for those who are trying to achieve that platinum blonde/ginger blonde hue in their hair. I use products specifically designed for African American women. I used the Creme of Nature Nourishing Permanent Hair Color Treatment in 9.3 Ginger Blonde. This entire process cost me less than $10 if you include the $5.00 jar of shea butter. However, that Jar will last a few weeks, so it only cost $5.99 + tax.

I don't take anything from professional hair stylist, however I opt to do my own hair color at home vs. paying someone else to do it for me. I advocate for the frugal fashionista on a budget and this video is for that type of woman. Let's be self-sufficient with our style and beautty!

Wearing White Pants in The Winter & Pink Sparkle MakeUp

I had a lot of people message me in regards to my stance on wearing white pants in the fall & winter. We have all heard of the rule, "No white after Labor Day", in my mind that was a haters way of making everyone do what they wanted them to. LOL. Maybe that hating ass person didn't have any white to rock after labor day, or maybe it just didn't look good on them. Either way, no will be telling me what I can or can not wear, whenever the mood strikes.

With this outfit of the day, I decided to rock my favorite boots. I freakin' love these boots and they really edged up the look for me. I was going to opt for the zebra print peep toe shoes, but I chose the zebra print bracelet instead. I found that bracelet in a beauty supply store for $1.99, one of my favorites. I made some chandelier earrings and i wore that with a necklace that sort of matched. Considering my hair is so short, I have to actively remind myself to make my looks more femme, otherwise I look like my name should be Bertha. No offense to any Bertha's but I don't want to look like you.

This shimmery shirt, which was a head turner and the topic of many compliments, came from Goodwill for $1.00. It looked like crap on the hanger. I wasn't even going to buy it. However, like I preach to so many of you, don't judge a piece by the hanger. I chose to use this as my basic item (like a t-shirt) by wearing it under the blazer. It was also the inspiration to my makeup palette and it created that feminine feel I was looking for with it's pink hue.

For my makeup, I'm all about color and drama. I have pretty good skin, so if I'm looking for a subtle look, I won't even bother with the makeup most days. Today it was about a femme edge. I chose to use the colors from the blouse, which I don't use often. I was overdosing on pink as a child, considering my mother thought all girls had to wear it all the time. Because of that, I stay away from pink unless absolutely necessary. I use makeup from all types of places. I use Cover Girl Queen Collection, Avon, MAC, and even lower end stuff like the kits you get from Walmart for like $19.99 and Walgreen for $14.99. I figured out, that if you do it right, no one really cares anyway.

On my face is at least three shades of pink. I do my own lashes (of course) and the eye pencil I use glides on perfectly. It's like a makeup equivalent to a sharpie marker, it stays on all day.

My hair color is a product by Creme Of Nature. I think I might do a tutorial on how to color your hair at home. I love this color on my skin and I'm having lots of fun with it.

Overall, I encourage people to wear what they want... when they want. I go by no rules or regulations because these designers and taste-makers don't pay my rent. If I want to wear peep toe shoes in a blizzard, as long as I have medical insurance, it's none of any one's business. Like I tell you time and time again, if they don't like it -

So on Saturday, Doe The Paperboy asked us to come through for his music video shoot. I was excited and so down to do it. However, after over extending myself beyond my limits of things to do, I forgot to get a haircut and color the night before. I felt unprepared and a little rough. That is my honest account of my feelings that day. Even though I felt like crap, I still wanted to come through and show my support. When I got there, He asked me to throw on one of the t-shirts from local designer Arbriel Ainigriv Adorn Winfield

I loved the t-shirt so much, that i forgot how bad I was feeling earlier that day. He is really doing some great things in the art, fashion, and music spectrum for Richmond, Virginia. DIY Fresh Individual Eyelashes

It's nothing like some fresh individual eyelashes. I think I'm addicted to these things. Without them I feel naked, so I keep doing them on a bi-weekly basis. I know, I know... This is my vice.

To complete this look I used:
Ardell's Duralash Naturals knot free 100% Human Hair Lashes in Long (Black)
Individual lash glue
Vaseline for the back of my palm
Tweezers
Foil (small square)

I use the foil to pour the glue out and I use the Vaseline (a small dime size amount) to make my hand sticky, so the lashes will stick to them. This method saves me time from pulling the lashes off the tray. I simply pull off a row of lashes at a time and I place them on my hand, so I can rotate from my hand to the piece of foil containing the glue very quickly.
This whole process takes me a little less than 30 minutes.
I refuse to pay anyone to do this for me, its so easy to learn.

Am I The Only One That Goes Outside The Lines While Polishing My Right Hand?

Pay no attention to the freckles on my hands.. blame my Dad.

So I'm polishing my nails that new H&M color Going To The Opera Red. I like it a lot. It dries incredibly fast and goes on smooth and shiny. No need for a second coat if you don't have the time.
The big question is: Why can't it always be perfect on my right hand? #divadilemma

I decided to do a haul video from my trip to Diversity Thrift store in Richmond, Virginia on Sunday November 6th, 2011. This was after attebnding the fantastic Don't Hate, Celebrate Fashion Show at The GCCR 1407 Sherwood Avenue 23220. It was a great experience and I got to walk out with alot of things for less than $15 total. From a leather jacket to some earrings, to some graphic t-shirts for my son, I was happy to say my experience and my fashion finds at this store (one of my favorites) was worth sharing with you. The Night of Two Fashion Shows in RVA

This is what I chose to wear to the Fashion Surge Fashion show in RVA and the Don't Hate, Celebrate Fashion show with Diversity Thrift Store on Saturday, November 5th. It wasn't really chilly outside and I did want to rock my favorite pair of boots with a skirt and no tights before the wind snatched the skin off my knee caps. I threw on another thrift store find, this plaid black and cream jacket that set me back only $5.00 at diversity thrift a few months ago. Thanks to my sister for helping find this piece. I love it!

I kept it simple with the accessories (Something outside the norm for me) as to not overwhelm my outfit and take any attention off the models (wink). So I opted for diamond clustered studs (CZ, actually) and a simple necklace. I can't go without my bangles, so you already know I wasn't letting that go. The dress I had on was from Fashion Metro ( I think) I had it for so long that i totally forgot. It's a great dress with pockets on the sides. It's like a tank with a skirt attached and it came with a bib necklace that I opted out of wearing this evening because it's grey and black.

The Plain Makeup Bag Turned Gaga Clutch

I saw this makeup bag insert to a leatgher purse at a thrift store in RVA almost a year ago. I knew that the bag was too cute to just be a plain makeup bag, and although it was plain on the outside, the material was strong enough and pretty enough for it to stand alone as a clutch. I always have broken necklaces and bracelets around for DIY projects, so I decided to get to work. I took a picture of the plain bags before I added anything to them to show what they looked like when I first purchesed them. Pay no attention to the ghetto fab nail designs I roacked at the time, it was a phase that I'm proud to have escaped from.

What You'll Need:

Plain clutch or makeup bag (I paid $1.00)
Glue Gun
Super Glue
Broken necklace or bracelets of your choice
Feathers (optional)
steady hands, tissue, and a fearless idea

I don't care that it's not perfect or doesn't have LV stamped all over it. It looks amazing to me. I rock this out to the club a couple of times and women complimented me on it. It's a work of art in my book. You can personalize your own clutch anyway you see fit. If you rather have a clutch full of feathers, do it. I needed something that screamed glamour and fab without it being it being in my outfit. this clutch could dress up a t-shirt and some jeans on any given day. Nothing will last around me, if it's plain #Justsaying

Falling into EarthTones and Dark Colors

So If you know me, which most of you don't, you would know that winter time is the worst. I don't like this time of year because of the lack of fashion choices I'm stuck with in order to keep warm. It's more expensive to dress up in the winter, due to the many layers you are required to have, and I hate covering up. So with that said, I'm slowly (but surely), preparing for the winter season by buying some amazing flat knee boots that can go with practically anything. They have a chain and stud bracelet attached to them, that i can take on or off depending on what I'm wearing.

So far the boots are great, and I might wear these more often than a fashionista should, but as I mature, I'm searching for comfort and fashion.... not just fashion. Damn, those women who placed that that burden on me. LOL.

In this outfit, I'm sporting my seasonal black sweater with gold, silver, and bronze shimmery stripes. My favorite snake belt to cinch my waist, some brown skinny slacks, and these fab boots that only cost me $30 at a show retailer near my home. I layered my bangles (an addiction) and threw on some chain link earrings to match. my makeup is a combination of bronze and gold to match the sweater and I'm off to sell fashion to the world.

I like this outfit because it's functional and warm for this cold day. It makes my boobs look huge, but what can you do. I was just seeking comfort.
