I celebrated New Year this year in Las Vegas, where I'm currently training for my helicopter license. I've been training for slightly over a month and will take my helicopter flight test (i.e. check ride) this Friday, on 6 Jan.

While on my solo helicopter training flight today, I decided to record this 16 minute video on board the Robinson R22 helicopter here in Las Vegas on 2 January 2012.

Mr Fabian Lim worked for several years as a management consultant at Deloitte Consulting before he decided to become his own boss. 

He set up a wedding videography business in 2001, filming weddings in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Australia and New York. In 2006, his friend took over the running of the business and Mr Lim, 39, retained a small share.

Meanwhile, in 2002, a friend who returned from the United States introduced him to Internet marketing. The idea of being able to make a living at home through the Internet so intrigued him that he devoted the next five years to mastering Internet marketing techniques by attending various online courses run by US experts.

In 2005, he had his first breakthrough when he sold market research software online and it generated sales of US$200,000 over 20 months. He set up a blog and built a mailing list consisting mainly of online readers of his weekly newsletter that gave updates on Internet marketing techniques and the latest Web products.

In 2006, he launched his own instructional program that taught users how to utilise Google's paid advertising system effectively. He achieved sales of US$100,000 in five days. 

He started providing Internet marketing education – via the Web, and through running courses in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. To date, he has taught more than 4,000 people how to make a living by marketing Web products and services.

Towards the end of 2009, he picked up stock trading, and learnt how to buy and sell stocks over the Internet using a trend-tracking trading system.

The software helps in selecting stocks that are potentially on a market uptrend and provides buy and sell signals to the user.

Mr Lim graduated with a business degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, administered by the Singapore Institute of Management, in 1995. He worked at Texas Instruments for a year before joining Deloitte.

He is married to Ms Evangeline Lee, 37, who assists him in his business as a director of operations. 

Q: Are you a spender or saver?

I spend about 30 per cent of my money, and invest 50 per cent. The remainder is held in cash. My savings account earns less than 1 per cent per annum. So, rather than save the money, I choose to invest it in my business and in the stock market.

Q: How much do you charge to your credit cards every month?

I carry four credit cards in my wallet: Citibank Visa, UOB Visa, POSB MasterCard and American Express.

I charge around $10,000 a month to these cards, the bulk of the charges being business-related, like air tickets and hotel expenses. The rest are charges associated to my hobbies like aviation and personal travel.

Q: What financial planning have you done for yourself?

My portfolio comprises my businesses, insurance, stocks and cash.

Between 2009 and late last year, I set up three firms – ClickEvents.com.sg, ClickAcademy.com.sg and ClickSystems.com.sg – which focus on events management, online marketing and stock trading education, respectively.

I own several life insurance policies: three term plans, two whole life, two endowment and two investment-linked insurance policies which invest in Europe, Asia, global technology and global equity. I have a life cover of $2.5 million and a critical illness cover of $400,000. I review these policies once a year with my financial advisor Felix Kim from Prudential. Ever since I learnt how to invest in the stock market, I have stopped buying investment-linked insurance policies.

I set aside US$100,000 (S$126,000) for my stock investments, which are mainly US and local stocks that are selected using my system SharesXPert. I do not invest more than 10 per cent of that in a single counter.

I was short on F&N and Genting on March 14 and sold them on Monday. At present, the market is uncertain so I have no positions. My monthly target returns are 5 to 25 per cent.

I'm also planning to invest about $200,000 in a flight chartering business this year-end. A few friends and I are considering buying a Turboprop plane that costs US$3.5 million.

Q: Moneywise, what were your growing-up years like?

I was fortunate to have grown up in a middle-class environment. I have two brothers, one older and one younger. 

My dad was a general manager at a petrochemical firm but he ventured into the business of distributing cookware when I was 10. He was successful and enjoyed living comfortably. My mother helped him in his business. 

But I was certainly not spoilt as a kid. I had to work for things that I wanted. For instance, I owned and operated a mobile disco company when I was in Catholic Junior College to earn some pocket money. Then I was the resident pianist at Changi Airport Terminal 2's transit lounge for two years, to pay for my university fees. 

We lived in a 3,000 sq ft, three-storey, semi-detached house in the Upper Thomson area and moved to a 1,500 sq ft apartment at Mandarin Gardens when I was 16.

Q: How did you get interested in investing?

I started getting serious in investing only slightly less than two years ago. I'm a late bloomer in investing because I spent most of my working years focusing on being an entrepreneur. 

Now that my businesses are more or less stable, I am able to seriously focus on investing to grow my money.

To this end, my investment strategy involves managing my funds using my own stock trading system, SharesXPert, an activity that takes less than 30 minutes a day.

Q: What property do you own?

A 1,378 sq ft three-bedroom freehold condominium at The Suites At Central, Devonshire Road. I bought it in December 2009 for $2.6 million. The current valuation is approximately $3.2 million.

Q: What's the most extravagant thing you have bought?

It was a recent acquisition of a four-seater airplane, Columbia 350. I bought it last December for approximately US$400,000 in cash. Due to the unavailability of aircraft loans in Asia, I had no choice but to pay for the aircraft entirely in cash. 

The aircraft is based in the US, and I had the pleasure of flying it there in December and January. I spent about 30 hours in the aircraft and every minute of it has been pure pleasure.

Owning a private aircraft offers me unrivalled convenience not possible with regular commercial air travel. For example, as I travel to Kuala Lumpur very often, getting there via private aircraft can save me approximately one hour door to door. And I won't be subject to liquid, aerosols and gels regulations. Lastly, I can use the plane to provide joy rides to the less fortunate. I plan to have the plane here in June. 

Q: What's your retirement plan?

I really love what I do. I get up any time I want and work from home. What more can one ask for? I hope to continue to do what I'm doing for a long time.

If I ever retire, I hope to spend my retirement years as a professional poker player. Fly around the world in a private jet and take part in poker competitions!

My wife and I currently need about $20,000 a month, which includes paying our mortgage and income tax.

Q: What has been your worst investment to date?

I set up a business with a partner selling 'silicon bras' in 2005. We were one of the first to bring the product to Singapore, and business was brisk at first. However, other big-time competitors started coming in and the market was soon flooded. The retail price dropped considerably and so did our margins. In the end, my storeroom at home became stocked with silicon bras to the point where I was giving them as birthday presents to my female friends.

My investment was fortunately only $10,000, and I lost half of it when I closed down the business in 2006. I learnt that physical product retailing is tough, especially if you can't differentiate your product from that of your rivals. Now, I don't deal with physical inventory because my business involves software and knowledge.

Q: And your best investment? 

My best investment to date, in terms of net dollar gain, is probably my current property in Devonshire Road. 

It appreciated by close to $600,000 in just one year.

Updating both FaceBook and Twitter account status' separately results in duplicate effort and a waste of time.

But what’s important is the need to realize that KEI is more useful when comparing RELATIVE effectiveness between related keywords and less useful when comparing between unrelated keywords.

In addition, when considering keyword effectiveness, you need to consider not only the KEI, but also the keyword competition.

For example, you may discover a high KEI keyword like ‘child car seat’ during your keyword research.

However, just because it is a high KEI keyword does not mean you should target this keyword.

You’ll face 33,000 allintitle competition if you wish to target ‘child car seat’.

The question you need to ask yourself is whether you have the SEO skills to compete against such a large number of competitors?

Consider two potential and related keywords below:

‘child car seat safety rating’    

Allintitle:   Volume     KEI
128             720      4,050

‘new child car seat’ 

Allintitle:   Volume     KEI
843             720      615

Both keywords have a far lower KEI than ‘child car seat’.

However, they also have far lower allintitle competition.

As such, you are better off targeting these long-tail keywords as they are much easier to rank.

Don’t forget that when deciding which keywords to target, you have to also consider the ‘commercial value’ of the keyword.

And no, you don’t need to know the OCI (Online Commercial Intent) of the keyword to figure this out.

Comparing ‘child car seat safety rating’ and ‘new child car seat’, it is pretty obvious that ‘new child car seat’ has a higher ‘commercial value’ i.e. someone searching with this keyword is likely looking for a product than ‘child car seat safety rating’.

So based on the above two examples, you may want to focus on getting ranked for ‘new child car seat’, since you probably could sell car seats from Amazon.com and make a decent commission.

But then again, you may want to optimize for ‘child car seat safety rating’ simply because these people are looking for relevant information, and even though they are probably not in a ‘ready to buy’ mode as yet, these visitors may well return to your website in future to purchase a child car seat, if they are impressed with the quality of your website content.

If you look on the top right, you’ll see a subscription form where you can enter your e-mail address. I’m using the free FeedBurner E-mail Subscription system (which is now owned by Google).

What the Feedburner system does is e-mail you at a specified time whenever the blog is updated.

You will not receive any e-mail if there are no updates.

And the good thing about this system is 1) it’s FREE and 2) my blog subscribers will not be e-mailed more than once a day as FeedBurner will consolidate all posts made within the last 24 hours.

If you have a blog, I highly recommend you headover to FeedBurner and get a free account (sign-in with yout Google ID) so you too can install this system on your blog.

It is a terrific way to update your blog readers and… hey you can’t beat FREE!

I’ve also added a Google Friend Connect widget on my blog. If you have a Google Account (who doesn’t have one nowadays?),  you can connect with me using Google Friend Connect.

Last but not least, you’ll notice I added links from my blog to my FaceBook and Twitter profiles using two attractive glossy icons that I found while searching the web. These icons are free to use and swipe… so be my guest :p

But for now, I want to show you how to attract FREE targeted traffic from search engines using search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to target long-tail keywords.

What is a long-tail keyword?

A long-tail keyword refers to a niche keyword that is targeted and specific.

The term ‘long tail’ was coined by Chris Anderson, Editor of Wired Magazine, when he released his ground-breaking book, The Long Tail.

Here’s my personal definition of ‘long-tail’ keyword:

A long-tail keyword is a micro-niche comprising low-volume keywords (three or more words in length) AND low-volume competition

Take for example the popular niche “web hosting”.

Most marketers target this niche by focusing their SEO efforts on the key phrase “web hosting”.

And they usually achieve zero results.

Why?

Simply because almost EVERY other marketer is ALSO targeting the same key phrase!

Here’s a look at the search volume for “web hosting” (see diagram below) I extracted using the Free Wordtracker Online Tool.

 Notice the term “web hosting” attracts 5400 searches each day.

A huge market for sure, but is it also a competitive market?

Let’s find out…

When assessing competition, I like to use the Google allintitle: operator – because it tells me how many web pages are competing for a top ranking for the keyword.

What is AlIInTitle:?

Allintitle: is a Google operator that indicates the number of web pages in Google’s index that have the targeted keyword phrase between the <title> </title> tags of their web pages.

This is useful information because when performing basic on-page SEO, we always place our targeted keyword phrase in the title tag of our web page. Hence, the presence of a keyword phrase in the title tag suggests a web page is also competing for a top ranking.

To determine the allintitle: competition, all you need to do is type ‘allintitle: your keyword’ in the Google search box (see diagram below):

What does the above snapshot tell me?

It tells me there are over 9 million web pages competing for a top 10 ranking in Google for the keyword “web hosting”.

That’s a heck a lot of competitors if you asked me!

No wonder you’ll get nowhere if you target “web hosting” and hope to get free traffic from the search engines!

So rather than target “web hosting”, focus instead on numerous long-tail keywords related to “web hosting”.

How To Locate Long-Tail Keywords?

A great technique is to start at the bottom of the Free Wordtracker Tool results (see diagram below)

Consider the long-tail keyword “low cost web hosting services” with 58 searches a day (not bad a search volume for a long-tail keyword!)

Let’s take a look at the allintitle: competition for “low cost web hosting services” (see diagram below)

This long-tail keyword has over 4,000 competing allintitle: web pages. Based on my SEO  experience, any intermediate SEO-trained marketer would be able to achieve a top 10 ranking for this keyword phrase, because he/she only needs to compete with 4,000 other webmasters.

Would you rather face 4,000 or 9 million competitors? Go figure!

I did say you’ll probably require intermediate SEO knowledge to gain a Top 10 ranking for a keyword with an allintitle:  of 4,000.

So, are beginner internet marketers doomed?

Certainly not!

If you are an internet marketing newbie, I strongly suggest you target ultra-low allintitle: keywords.

To locate ultra-low allintitle: competing keywords, you may need to ‘dig deeper’ by drilling down on a keyword using Free Wordtracker Tool.

I’ve drilled-down on the keyword “low cost web hosting services” (see diagram below).

Ok, so the search volume for “california low cost web hosting services” is not great at all, with just 3 searches a day.

But then again, a top ranked web page for this search term can drive 3 x 30 = 90 visitors to your website in one month, or 1095 vistors a year!

Not bad, considering you didn’t spend a penny for these visitors!

What about the competition?

There are literally no web pages in Google competing for a Top 10 ranking for the keyword “california low cost web hosting services”!

Woohoo!

Great news, because this means almost anyone with basic SEO knowledge should be able to achieve a Top 10 ranking for the key phrase “california low cost web hosting services”.

So if you want to attract targeted traffic to your website but are new to the SEO game, start by targeting free traffic to your website using ultra-low volume long-tail keywords – and I guarantee you’ll be making money online in no time!

The Bottom Line: Where You Lack in Knowledge and Experience You Make Up by Sheer Numbers!

Take some time to add your affiliate links to relevant and useful resources in the ebook so you can generate extra affiliate income for free!

Simple Strategy #3 – Use As Opt-In Incentive And For Autoresponder E-mails

The most important benefit of purchasing a PLR product is you can almost do anything you want with it!

To this end, the best use of PLR products is to use them to build your own mailing list!

You need to understand that every successful marketer has a mailing list of loyal subscribers, so why should YOU be different?

You can select one PLR report (customized with your own unique ecover) and use it as an incentive to sign-up for you mailing list.

And you can use other relevant PLR reports and turn them into autoresponder e-mails.

Simple Strategy #4 – Use As A Bonus For An Affiliate Product

Affiliate marketing is certainly one of the best ways to generate an online income without the need to have your own product.
