And so concludes our brief foray into "tastemaking" for the forthcoming months. Will any of the twelve bands/artists we've chosen actually manage to become commercially, or even critically, successful? We're not so sure. But the reason we've chosen them is that we want to support them. The idea is that perhaps you'd like (at least some of) them to do well too.

Spector

What can I say about Spector that’s not already been said? They make music that reminds me of my favourite time in indie music, and claim 'Room On Fire' is the best Strokes album (I almost agree). They’re not anything unique or innovative, but they don’t claim to be. Upcoming single 'Chevy Thunder' with its whirling guitars and thunderous drums sits as one of my favourite songs of the year already, and its insanely sing-along nature will have it stuck in your head for days, and surely that’s the best thing about good music? (Emily Solan)

The Staves

Not much hype has surrounded The Staves yet, which is probably a good thing, giving us time to appreciate them with the time that needs to be spent listening to them. Granted, they’ve had plenty of attention, and all for the right reasons - their exquisite music. They’ve been asked to provide vocals for albums by Fionn Regan and Tom Jones, and have been on tour with the like of James Vincent McMorrow (amongst plenty of others).

However, girl bands (The Staves are all sisters, too) are ever rising - see Tegan And Sara, The Pierces, Stealing Sheep etc so what makes this trio so special? Well, their acoustic delicacy seems to ensnare you from the get-go, described as ‘a melding of still, bright English folk and sublime West Coast pop’ perfectly encapsulates their sound. They’ve been known to stun crowds into silence and if 2012 is their year, it should be an extremely quiet one. (Emily Arc)

Team Me

This Norwegian band mix folk, orchestral indie and electronica so supremely that I am very hopeful that they will manage to become one of Scandanavia's bigger exports. They've even won a Norwegian Grammy. One of my favourite bands at last year's Great Escape festival, at the very least, their thrilling live shows are likely to wow UK audiences. Part three of our four part series of bands to watch/tips for 2012. In this post, myself, Jack Thomson and Rajan Lakhani all offer a tip. The final part arrives in due course.

Michael Kiwanuka

Winning the BBC Sound of 2012 Poll can be perceived as being a bad thing, thrusting artists into the lime light and putting pressure on them to deliver a big selling album. Michael Kiwanuka seems to have acknowledged his accolade, but carried on doing exactly what he does best, writing beautifully touching, laid back songs that wouldn't sound out of place along side any of Randy Newman's film scores. An authentic artist writing songs from the heart; 2012 is definitely going to see Michael Kiwunuka become a household name. (Jack Thomson)

Niki & The Dove

Niki & The Dove have a beguiling mystery about them, underlined by the animalistic imagery which has been a feature of their output so far. Describing them as yet another kooky electro-pop duo would do them a major disservice as there is an individual, atmospheric quality to the music they have released so far. The first song I heard by them was 'The Fox', downloadable below. It is a melancholy affair that builds to a huge chorus and has even bigger, booming beats backing it. It was unlike anything I’d heard last year but underneath the cacophony is a simple melody which prevents it from being overpowering - they're well on course to be the 'Bjorn Borgs of pop music'. (Rajan Lakhani)

Oliver Tank

One of last year's most stunning tracks had to be 'Last Night I Heard Everything In Slow Motion' by Australian producer Oliver Tank, its poignancy emboldened by its use in a civil rights campaign. Doing the James Blake minimalism-meets-post-dubstep thing but in a much more compelling manner, Tank may not become the critical darling his predecessor became but along with the likes of Psychologist, he'll undoubtedly continue to produce jaw-dropping music during 2012. (Saam Das)

Part two of our bands to watch for the next ten months or so. Or longer? Part three to follow shortly. Part one comprised of Alabama Shakes, Alt-J, and BASTILLE - tipped by Emily Solan, Jack Thomson and myself respectively. Here, Emily Arc and Rajan Lakhani get some choices in. And me.

Charli XCX

With Adele, Ed Sheeran and tepid, souless RnB dominating, British mainstream music is crying out for someone who will bring colour to what is currently a very grey scene. Step forward Charli XCX. Fusing together goth stylings with synth-pop to create what she callls ‘dark pop’, Charli XCX has a distinctive image and sound that has clearly been carefully honed over the past few years. Her 'Nuclear Seasons' release was the most exciting pop music I heard last year from a British artist and she’s kept up the momentum with the lovely, more upbeat ‘Valentine’, released unsurpringly on Valentine’s Day. (Rajan Lakhani)

Daughter

I've talked of the entrancing live performances and wonderfully ethereal folk tales in the past, and in 2012, it looks like Daughter may well break into the mainstream. It's still a way off but with the likes of Laura Marling now firmly established, it's eminently possible. Possibly imminently. (Saam Das)

Friends

Named after Brian Wilson’s favourite Beach Boys album, the Brooklyn quintet have already began to kick up a storm with songs like 'Friend Crush' and 'I’m His Girl': post-disco “dance” tracks with fruitful vocals and a slight indie edge- sounds fun, right? Comprised of actual childhood friends (how appropriate) and all coming together by sheer fluke (bed bugs, would you believe?) Friends have surpassed the whole ‘mates-pissing-about-in-a-band-for-a-laugh-thing’ and have actually produced some decent music, but if they are just pissing about who cares? They’re fucking brilliant either way. (Emily Arc)

It's coming up to the end of February and I know what you're thinking - what's the point in doing your tips for 2012 now? Well, we'd like to think that this means that the hype has died down on certain bands while prominent others are emerging. We did much the same last year, although this time around, FG writers have chipped in too. To such an extent that I'll be splitting the tips up into four separate posts. Here be part one....

Alabama Shakes

After releasing a 4-track EP in the latter half of 2011, the band’s track 'You Ain’t Alone' set tongues wagging and it’s easy to see why. There is an earthiness to lead vocalist Brittany Howard’s voice that sits wonderfully alongside their blues tinged sound. The simplistic approach highlights the sheer power in the vocals, and creates something so heart-stoppingly beautiful. Follow that with the fact that the band are possibly the only group to have improved a Led Zeppelin song when covering it, and it's clear that Alabama Shakes have the brilliance to change the world. Raw, soulful, passionate and good old rock and roll. (Emily Solan)

Alt-J

Hailing from Leeds, Alt-J appear to be a blend between Wild Beasts and Bombay Bicycle Club with their beautifully haunting and incredibly hypnotic sound. It's got intricate guitars, jittery indie beats, and harmonies and melodies that will blow you away. It's this fresh sound that I believe will propel them into 2012 in a big way. (Jack Thomson)

BASTILLE

Dan Smith's outfit have been making steady progress since being unearthed at the back end of 2010. Recently selling out two London shows within hours, their debut album is due out in 2012. Expected to mix their RnB influences with the more overt grandiose (electro)pop of the likes of 'Flaws' and 'Icarus'. We all expect BASTILLE to win over a lot more people by the end of the year. (Saam Das)

You wait ages for a sophomore album that’s better than its predecessor and then three come along at once. After Pulled Apart by Horses and Last Witness, Southampton trio Band Of Skulls have produced a second album that eclipses their first album – the well received 'Baby Darling Doll Face Honey' - in every way.

'Sweet Sour' builds a much bigger sound around their classic lineup of Bass, Guitar and Drums. Title track, 'Sweet Sour', cracks open the album with a swagger reminiscent indeed of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s own tune 'Sweet N Sour'. Distorted guitars underpin the main riffs and the song builds slowly, like an approaching storm, ending with a flurry of jagged guitar notes and chugging bass – "Sourer by the minute but you’re sweeter by the hour". Cool song.

Then both 'Bruises' and 'Wanderluster' play at combining the different aspects of their sound – full-on heaviness versus restrained bittersweet melodies – and pretty successfully too. After that the album alternates between songs that sound like The White Stripes on steroids – 'The Devil Takes Care Of His Own', 'You’re Not Pretty But You Go It Goin’ On' and 'Lies' – and gentler songs that exploit the almost folky qualities of Emma Richardson’s vocals – of which 'Navigate' and 'Close To Nowhere' are the best.

What’s refreshing is that both approaches are pulled into the narrative of the record and it all makes some sort of sense. The band definitely wear their influences quite comfortably and I really like the fact that they have a distinctive voice nonetheless.

I know I’ve been in trouble for saying this before but I do feel that British music has been in the doldrums for a while (with some notable exceptions of course), and now there are some encouraging signs that we’re moving into a newly creative phase. Band Of Skulls are part of that renaissance, which is happening across a great variety of musical styles, and 'Sweet Sour' is a strong statement. Better still, it leaves the impression that the best of this band is yet to come.

8.0/10

Last year, I chatted about "night folk" artist Shura on BBC 6Music, now on Akira Records. Well, the guys behind that label, are also in a "dream folk" band. That band used to be called Solar State but they've started afresh name-wise, with Mt. Wolf. And unleashed one of the most hypnotic tracks of the year in 'Life Size Ghosts'.

There's another track available to listen in the form of the heavily dubstep-influenced 'Underground', which combines pulsating beats and acoustic folk before diving into a shimmering sea of ambience. It's certainly an interesting offering. But it's 'Life Size Ghosts' where the dream folk tag comes into play, with its incredible ethereal vocals - think Wild Beasts meets the aforementioned Shura.

There are more bits and bobs on one of the members' Soundcloud page, if you wish to investigate further. Although I'm not sure it's going to be possible to drag yourself away from the magic of 'Life Sized Ghosts'.
Following last year's 'EP3' with its huge sounding opener 'Promises', [STRANGERS] are back with a new single released by our pals Killing Moon Limited. 'Shine On You' continues the anthemic synth-pop of 'Promises' - listen below.

I had said that 'Promises' was the best track from [STRANGERS] to date. That has now been surpassed. The swirling 'Shine On You' has all the elements to win over even the most hardened dancefloor - magical synths, vocal hooks, and a singalong chorus. Ride the wave of euphoria.

'Shine On You' is out on 16th April on Killing Moon Limited.

The “Lates” programme of live music and concept clubs at VAULT Festival kicked off with Videopia on 10th February at the Old Vic Tunnels. I’ll do my best to explain Videopia, but I’m unlikely to do it justice. Imagine a montage of your favourite moments from cinema history - Gene Kelly swaggering down the street before ditching his brolly to sing in the rain, Sam and Frodo destroying the ring in Mordor, John Travolta and Uma Thurman twisting up a hurricane on the dancefloor in 'Pulp Fiction'.

Now picture a stylish twentysomething crowd with clinically amateur acting skills, draped in whatever they found in a treasure chest of costumes, let loose on a stage in front of a live audience to reinterpret the magic. The footage is cut up, and with minimal airbrushing of your dignity, the final edit is played back near the end of the night while everyone is busting their final grooves.

You can’t fault the originality. Videopia brings the giggles of home-movies and the joy of quotable cinematic one-liners into the club experience. It is a safe environment to maim cinema’s greatest scenes. Plenty of smiles all round and not a hint of mockery. The only slight shame is that the interactivity broke up a really strong DJ set. Nevertheless, a really fun night leaving you grinning under the limelight or simply enjoying the Hollywood travelling circus. Undoubtedly, you’ll be left reciting 'Casablanca' or 'The Graduate' on the yellow brick road home.
If you're like me then Valentine's Day is generally best avoided for a multitude of reasons - mostly related to girls. But I was far from the only one not to care much for the day, as Huw Stephens threw another one of his popular showcases at The Social in London. I popped into check in on FG faves Vinyl Jacket and their chirpy indie pop. Download 'Lucky Soldier' for free below.

Northumberland's finest hurtled through their set of spritely tunes, dropping the likes of excellent previous single 'Koala', the thrilling 'Broken Record' and forthcoming single, 'Red Light' - which you can listen to via the video below. The latter track is coming out on The Calico Print, who are giving away 'Lucky Soldier' for free.

Elements of the off-kilter pop of Field Music combine with the more jumpy style of The Futureheads creating something a bit fun and a bit ridiculous. Embodying their live experience one might even say. Certainly, I've never seen a man play a triangle with such infectious enthusiasm. Hopefully it'll rub off on more people in 2012.

Biting political satire and shadow puppets may not seem like the most immediately successful combination, but after having the pleasure of seeing The Great Puppet Horn at the VAULT Festival I can confirm that it works – much like peanut butter and jam, brie and grape and other seemingly unlikely concoctions.

Billed as ‘'South Park' meets 'Newsnight' with a whole load of cardboard’, (but probably owing a little something to 'Spitting Image' too, I think) this brilliantly funny show offers up a series of whimsical narratives, hilarious characters (both real and fictional) and absurd sketches. All of these are performed by two men with a smallish screen, an overhead projector, and hundreds of cardboard puppets.

Written and performed by Jeremy Bidgood and Lewis Young – a director and TV animator respectively – 'The Great Puppet Horn' ridicules political heavyweights and pop culture figures alike, irreverently tackling meaty issues like last year’s riots, global warming, immigration, the economy and the continued popularity of Brian Cox.

Along with the sharp and inventive writing, what makes the show so enjoyable is Bidgood and Young’s frenetic delivery. They switch between characters and voices at a furious pace, carelessly discarding puppets and scenery as they go, with infectious energy.

The dark, subterranean setting of The Old Vic Tunnels leant itself particularly well to this unusual theatre genre but I think it’s definitely worth catching 'The Great Puppet Horn' wherever you can.

'The Great Puppet Horn' was performed at VAULT festival and is on at the Little Angel Theatre on Wednesday 25th April, 8pm.
Like us on Facebook // Follow us on Twitter

Album Review: Tennis - Young And Old

Tennis - 'Young And Old' (UK Release: 13 Feb '12) // Words: Rajan Lakhani

Sophomore efforts following a successful debut tend to go one of two ways – either a bigger, louder and more ambitious record or more of the same, invariably with lesser results as it lacks the surprise of their debut. The lead track on 'Young And Old' is called 'It All Feels The Same', which would suggest the latter but this is misleading as the band have attempted to progress. However, there are clear limits to how much bolder a band as precious as Tennis can be.

Recorded in only three weeks, the record has a cleaner production than the debut courtesy of The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney and has a fuller band sound, adding more muscle to their songs of love. Unfortunately, this serves to work against the band, highlighting the lack of dynamism which may have been previously obscured by the fuzziness of their earlier recordings.

'Young And Old' is very much a record of two halves, with the first half the far stronger and having more variety. The aforementioned opening track and lead single 'Origins' see the band realising their aim of sounding like "Stevie Nicks going through a Motown phase". Indeed, there are nods to Motown throughout, whether it’s Alaina Moore’s voice or the organ sounds which litter the record, reminiscent of 60s soul.

Best of all is 'My Better Self' which sees the band experimenting with synth-pop and pulling it off with great success. Regrettably, the quality of the record dips substantially after 'Petition', with 'Robin' and 'Take Me To Heaven' twee pop by numbers. The only high spot on the second half is 'High Road' which finds Tennis rocking harder than ever with its propulsive rhythm and crackling snares.

'Young And Old' is a pleasant listen, nothing more, nothing less. While debut album 'Cape Dory' had a carefree naivety about it, this record is more calculated and consequently less charming. It may leave a smile on your face but it will be short-lived as the songs fail to linger long in the memory. A disappointment but the Tennis’s knack for catchy melodies means it would be foolish to already dismiss them.

Hammer have been a firm staple of British horror on and off since the 1930s. Their recent revival continues with this adaptation of Susan Hill's 1983 novel 'The Woman In Black', already adapted tremendously successfully for the stage. The film adaptation has also begun successfully, topping the UK box office, despite mixed reviews.

Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) is a single father, whose wife died in childbirth, and is tasked with handling the affairs of the estate of the now deceased Alice Trablow in the North East of England. The local villagers are reluctant to talk about the family and estate, and it soon emerges that the area is haunted by the wronged sister of Trablow - the eponymous woman in black.

Billed as the "most chilling ghost story of its time", my experience of 'The Woman In Black' was far less impressive. Had I not been charged with reviewing the film in the iconic setting of the VAULT festival, I would not have seen this - I am immensely susceptible to being terrified. Yet 'The Woman In Black' failed rather miserably in this aspect.

The odd moment proves suitably scary although whether this feeling is actually one of fright or merely being startled is a matter of debate. Regardless, the lack of a sense of foreboding is of more importance. Director James Watkins rarely succeeds in delivering chilling scenes, hindered by Jane Goldman's mediocre script.

The film suffers from an all-consuming blandness, whereby the plot plods along with little mystery or intrigue, despite ample opportunity. This blandness extends to the unremarkable acting. Daniel Radcliffe finds himself in the depressing dichotomy of looking sad or scared throughout the entire film. The villagers too, barring Ciarin Hinds and Janet McTeer, are left looking either terrified or angry depending what day of the week it is.

'The Woman In Black' is forgettable. A surprising and all the more disappointing conclusion considering its firm standing in British horror history. Aspects of the film do stand out, such as the production and costume design, but these do not hide the central blandness that dominates the entire film. Gloomy, for more than one reason.

★ (FG Rating: 1/5)

I'm not sure I believe in the Valentine's Day hoopla. Until the day someone brings me roses. And by that, I mean a tin of Roses chocolates. A plus side to the day is the generosity of bands and artists in giving away songs for free, as The Good Natured have. Their generosity is time-limited however so pick up the seeping melodrama of 'Raindrops' for free below.

'Raindrops' eschews some of the more recent continental dance-pop that they've been embracing for their earlier darkness - albeit with a tinge of Enya of all people. The latter is by no means a bad thing, adding a sense of mysticism to this tale of woe.

On a similar note but in a different direction, comes an unreleased track from Sarah McIntosh et al, the wonderful 'Lovers'. Even in acoustic form as the session video shows below, the track pulsates magnificently. "You and I could be lovers, but you and I will never be in love."

Witches, ghosts and – more recently – trolls have all been given the found-footage treatment, and with 'Chronicle' the superhero genre takes its turn, with shaky camera work and dubious CGI effects aplenty. I’m not sure the film is entirely as memorable and enduring as its title would suggest, however.

Co-written and directed by newcomer Josh Trank on a relatively low budget, 'Chronicle' documents the lives of three teenage boys, who – after discovering a mysterious crater that houses a glowing, crystalline substance – develop powers of telekinesis.

Dane DeHaan stars as Andrew, the troubled outcast (and cameraman) of the bunch, who has an abusive drunk for a father and a mother who is terminally ill. Andrew forms a brotherly bond with Matt (Alex Russell) and Steve (Michael B. Jordan) as they explore their newfound abilities, but their friendship deteriorates as Andrew’s sinister potential is realised.

All three lead actors deliver convincing performances, adding to the film’s refreshing sense of realism. The dialogue is amusing and natural, particularly in the early sequences where the boys test out their powers with a series of puerile pranks, perhaps taking a few cues from 2010’s 'Kick-Ass'. DeHaan’s performance is especially praise-worthy; he conveys Andrew’s vulnerability and turbulent psychological state with subtlety and skill.

However, although largely enjoyable, the film does have its flaws: no effort is made to explain the enigmatic crater, the source of the boys’ powers. It also seems slightly unlikely, in today’s post-modern age, that none of these (presumably) pop-culture savvy teenagers would think to use their powers for the greater good – or to compare their unusual situation to the exploits of Peter Parker, Charles Xavier, et al.

Unfortunately, the compelling nature of Andrew’s character seems to throw the other two protagonists into the shade, to an extent reducing them to props who simply react to his increasingly dangerous tantrums – but then the ‘bad guys’ usually are the most interesting.

In many ways, the plot of 'Chronicle' is formulaic and predictable, but perhaps this is partly due to the fact that cinema has been so saturated with superhero narratives in the past few years that audiences have lost the capacity for surprise – although that may just be me. The found-footage style undoubtedly injects some novelty into the genre, however, and both the young cast and director show promising talent for the future, so watch this space.

★★★ ½ (3.5/5)

'Chronicle' is in selected UK cinemas now.
Like us on Facebook // Follow us on Twitter

Listen: Alpines + Craze Hoax - Gold [New Single]

Words: Saam Das

A couple of nights ago, I was thinking about what had happened to the release of 'Saviour' by London night-pop duo Alpines. All we'd heard of the track was a short sample many months ago. Unfortunately, it looks like it's been shelved. But as one door closes, another opens and instead of 'Saviour', we have an excellent new single - 'Gold', in collaboration with Craze + Hoax.

It's an impressive return after August's under-par single 'Cocoon', after the debut 'Night Drive' EP delivered a strong statement of intent almost a year ago. This their third collaboration with outside producers/artists, after working with Maya Jane Coles and Tremors - listen to those tracks below.

Production duo Craze + Hoax have worked with Emeli Sande, gaining a #2 hit single in the process, with the track 'Heaven'. Here the producers add a pulsating under-layer to the trippy melodrama of Alpines on the storming 'Gold'. As ever, Catherine Pocock's powerful vocals take centre stage and it's no surprise that Florence Welch has been championing the band. For good reason.

Friday evening saw the release of the latest Hammer horror film, an adaptation of 'The Woman In Black' - based on Susan Hill's novel of the same name, which has also spawned a tremendously successful stage play. I had the fortune of seeing the film on its opening night at VAULT Festival in the iconic setting of The Old Vic tunnels by Waterloo station.

Presented by The Flicker Club, this was one of a host of ongoing Hammer film screenings featuring special guest introductions/readings. Our special guest was Liz White, the film's very own Woman In Black. Prior to White's reading of a chapter from the original novel, we had an enthusiastic introduction from a gentleman (who as far as I'm aware, ironically failed to introduce himself) from The Flicker Club - telling us all about the small "vault" in which we were sat. The home to dead bodies in the past, he said. Appropriate, we said.

White proceeded to read Chapter Ten of the original novel, which thankfully transpired to be somewhat different in the final film - I was a bit concerned about spoilers, having not subjected myself to the play. Indeed, I was a bit concerned all round having heard about 'The Woman In Black' being one of the most chilling ghost stories of all time. Perhaps I was overly concerned as it eventually fell far short of this tagline. And I'm a massive scaredy cat.

The film starring Daniel Radcliffe and Ciaran Hinds sees Radcliffe's character visit a local village in the North East of England in order to sort out the legal affairs of a recently deceased woman. It emerges the estate of this woman is haunted by her wronged sister, the eponymous Woman In Black.

I'll be presenting a full review of the film shortly but in essence, aside from a few effective scares, 'The Woman In Black' is somewhat mundane. The film is rated a 12A, and I suspect had director James Watkins not had to modify his film, however slightly, it may have been more impressive. It's a technique that's paid dividends for Hammer though, as the film has immediately risen to the top of the UK box office takings.

This sporadic column will feature music from the outer edges and will try to find interesting stuff from beyond the range of comfortable listening. This time we feature three new releases by emerging bands from across the United Kingdom, each of which puts the case for a renewed vigor in the UK hardcore music scene. For more on Pulled Apart By Horses, Lantern For A Gale and Last Witness, keep reading.

First up, Pulled Apart By Horses follow their acclaimed debut album with an even better sophomore effort. That in itself is an unusual event these days, but 'Tough Love' really has taken their sound to a new level, filling it out without sapping its energy. PABH are from Leeds and have the almost retro edginess of others from the area like Gentleman’s Pistols but with a bit more bark and bite.

Opener and lead single 'V.E.N.O.M.' is a snappy, almost commercial slice but nuggets like 'Epic Myth', 'Romance Ain’t Dead' and 'Degeneration Game' lurk within. Overall, it’s a very strong offer and already one of the likely albums of the year. 8.0/10

Next come Lantern For A Gale from Northern Ireland and their eponymous debut EP, which has just recently been made free to download after a CD release. Only four tracks but this ringing hardcore with a Celtic touch makes for a grippingly breathless seventeen minutes – imagine Prong crossed with The Undertones. 'A Song For Heavy' is probably my favourite track but all four tracks are good, exciting stuff with an original touch. This is a young band very much on the up and it’ll be fun to see where they can go from here. For now, this is a terrific start. 7.5/10

Finally, Last Witness, who seem to have returned from the brink of extinction (and that is exceptionally good news) have produced their sophomore album, 'Mourning After'. With a distinctly London sound, the album is pure metalcore and as such probably not for the uninitiated. It’s tremendously well played and picks up where debut album 'An Unfinished Life' left off.

The drumming is particularly solid and the riffing precise and jagged. Strong, urgent vocals complete the line-up and this is an accomplished and challenging album that deserves to find an audience – although I doubt lead-off single 'The Void' will disturb the Top 40. With 'Mourning After', Last Witness really confirm their place in the front rank of new and emerging British hardcore. 8.5/10

So there you are – three great albums by new bands to watch out for. Why not buy them all and support your local hardcore?

Last night saw the 65th instalment of the BAFTA's film awards and consequently resulted in my Twitter feed lighting up with almost exactly the same tweets for several hours - "X has won Y #BAFTA". Riveting. I shall restrain myself before I launch further into a full blown tirade of the inane banality of constant live-tweeting. Instead, let's discuss the awards and its big winner, 'The Artist'.

'The Artist' won seven awards on the night, an ominous sign for the forthcoming Academy Awards. Most notably, it won the Best Film award, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), and Leading Actor (Jean Dujardin). Hazanavicius also picked up an award for Best Original Screenplay - I would have really liked to see an underdog in the form of 'The Guard' or 'Midnight In Paris' pull off the victory.

Indeed, in truth, in essentially every single category 'The Artist' was nominated, I felt another film was more deserving. From Dujardin beating out Michael Fassbender in 'Shame' to the over-exuberant score winning the Original Music category, I was somewhat disappointed. Perhaps only the excellent cinematography of Guillaume Schiffman was truly deserving, to these eyes.

I also had a tinge of disappointment upon the unveiling of 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' as Outstanding British Film - a film best described as plodding. Although I would have been similarly disaffected had either 'Shame' or 'We Need To Talk About Kevin' also won. Well crafted but unspectacular films. Meryl Streep was also an expected winner as Leading Actress, which led to a rather special and unexpected Prince Charming moment with Colin Firth:

Arguably the biggest "shock" of the evening was 'The Skin I Live In' triumphing in the Film Not In The English Language category. Many had expected the Oscar-nominated Iranian film, 'A Separation' to win. The other surprise was Adam Deacon's Rising Star award, admittedly voted by the public but the 'Kidulthood' actor had tough competition from the likes of Chris Hemsworth and Chris O'Dowd.

Ultimately, BAFTA members played it safe with their votes. And likewise with the choice of host, the agreeable but occasionally cringeworthy Stephen Fry - asking the 48 year old Brad Pitt to blow a kiss to the camera as if he were a member of a boyband was somewhat crass. So the report card for BAFTA this year will appropriately see a B-. The list of major winners is below.

"It's time to play the music. It's time to light the lights. It's time to meet The Muppets..." After more than a decade out of the big screen game, it's difficult to do anything but embrace the re-appearance of these much loved puppets. For anyone who holds the warm nostalgia of seeing the 'The Muppets Show' or any of the several feature films, 'The Muppets' is a welcome return that should not disappoint.

The film centres upon Walter, who is effectively the world's biggest Muppets fan, and his brother Gary (Jason Segel) as they venture to Los Angeles on holiday with Gary's girlfriend, Mary (Amy Adams). There they find The Muppet Theater and studio in a state of disrepair but furthermore, Walter discovers that Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) intends to destroy the area to drill for oil. Cue a race to reunite The Muppets and raise $10 million.

'The Muppets' reflects a sad reality for many - kids these days don't have the foggiest who they are and consequently, their power has been diminished greatly. But much like the film's main arc, their revival is already in full swing. Writers Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller filled their script with humour for all ages, adeptly masterminded by director James Bobin, whose tinge of subversion from his work with 'Da Ali G Show' once again rears its hilarious head.

The music is central to proceedings. Brett Mackenzie of 'Flight Of The Conchords' fame (which was created with Bobin, and Jermaine Clement) is on hand as music supervisor and did such a sterling job that one of the film's numbers, 'Man Or Muppet', is one of only two tracks to be in the running for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Oddly, it's one of the weaker numbers - cod melodrama, only overshadowed by a terrifying rap offering from Chris Cooper, who otherwise snarls appropriately in his villainous role.

In terms of the star power, there are no huge names. Amy Adams may be a three-time Oscar nominee but she is not yet a household name. (Soon though, I hope.) Amongst the film's frequent cameo performances is the big star here, Jack Black, who invigorating yet reluctant appearance is entirely apt. But a Muppets film is never really about the people. The Muppets are the stars (as demonstrated by the film's unenjoyable Moopets parody) and in the relate-able Walter, they have a new star.

An incessant musical number too many prevents this from warranting my full and complete desire but regardless, this is a joyful adventure comedy that ranks favourably among the excellent back catalogue of Muppets films. 'The Muppets' is a special film but let me end one of Walter's metaphors, "even the sunniest days have a few clouds".

★★★★ (4/5)

'The Muppets' is on wide release in UK cinemas from today. The film is preceded by a typically brilliant Pixar short, 'Small Fry'.
Like us on Facebook // Follow us on Twitter

Live Review: The Electric Soft Parade @ The Haunt

The Electric Soft Parade live at The Haunt, Brighton (4 Feb '12) // Words: Simon Opie
There’s something in the now customary live event of playing a classic album in its entirety. I’ve seen a few such gigs and they’ve always been good. But I can honestly say that this was a gig I’ll never forget. It was essentially to celebrate the 10th birthday of The Electric Soft Parade’s – at the time – quite remarkable 'Holes In The Wall' debut album, by playing it in its entirety.

I must admit it’s an album I liked a lot so I was looking forward to hearing it and the opening chords of 'Start Again' were reassuringly choppy and insistent. There was an undercurrent of tension on stage, which I put down to maybe nerves for the occasion. Pretty soon however Alex White kicked over the mic-stand and launched into a tirade about how bad the sound was.

Alex was obviously quite disturbed and it didn’t get any better. As the rest of the band attacked the album with relish – including an outstanding version of 'Silent To The Dark' – Alex sunk deeper into despair, finally sitting motionless at the keyboards holding his head in his hands. He came briefly to life towards the end of the set to introduce a track – perhaps 'This Given Line' – as ‘the shittiest song ever written’, which, lets face it, is a pretty bold claim.

By now brother Tom had run the gamut of emotions from bemused to irritation, then goading his sibling by playing the shunned keyboards from the other side of the stand. But to no avail – Alex simply announced this was his last ever gig and that he quit the band.

Meanwhile the rest of the stage was white hot and 'Why Do You Try So Hard To Hate Me' and 'Red Balloon For Me' were particularly hard edged. There was even time for guitarist Andrew Mitchell to celebrate his 30th birthday with a cake and candles (for which Alex remained stony faced, but we all sang).

Electric Soft Parade is very much the creation of the White brothers, but the live band is propelled by a classy rhythm section comprising drummer Damo Waters and long-time collaborator, bassist Matthew Twaites and they both gave their all despite, or perhaps because of, the highly charged atmosphere.

As the last notes rang out Alex stormed from the stage and he didn’t return except to take rather a long time packing up his kit – maybe savouring it for the last time. I came to really appreciate the album even more and was struck by how young they all were when it first came out 10 years ago.

Under the circumstances of touring and the relative success, it’s amazing they’re not all as crazy as Alex. Even then, it had been a spectacular performance of disintegration in real time, and as someone who has himself journeyed to the very edge of sanity and returned, I couldn’t help but feel sympathy.

Back in 2007, when this blog was called Keep Hope Inside, I talked a bit about a barely-into-their-teens indie band called Lo-Fi Culture Scene on one of the few podcasts I ever got around to making. Turns out we weren't the only ones to evolve into different things as the LFCS boys are now Casablanca, partly named after the film and a member of The Strokes, with an appropriately mature sound.

The band are still young uns at seventeen but with a couple of singles under their belt in their past guise, and support slots for the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club and Bloc Party, they're ready for a second stab at a music career. (Once they've done their A levels, obviously - stay in school, kids.) And the early signs are good.

Three demos are up on their Soundcloud with the moody 'I Needed To Know', a very recent addition. I must admit I prefer the other demos over the pottymouthed angst of the newest track. Reminiscent of their early days, 'Yes' is a heady indie anthem, cradled by guitar lines. 'Matter Of Time' finds itself in a similar fashion, albeit in ballad format. The tracks are all well crafted - tips for 2013? Quite possibly. The kids are alright.

2008 saw Turner Prize-winning artist Steve McQueen's debut feature film 'Hunger', establishing Michael Fassbender as an actor of considerable note. McQueen, too, received plaudits for his handling of the retelling of the IRA's 1981 hunger strike. The duo have once again come together in 'Shame', McQueen's second feature, a sex addiction melodrama. Unfortunately, much like 'Hunger', this latest effort is emotionally hollow.

Fassbender stars as Brandon, a highly successful New York businessman, whose sexual compulsions haunt him on a daily basis. His world is dominated by his needs, and brought into disarray by the appearance of his dependent sister, Sissy (Carey Mulligan).

Brandon's relationship with Sissy is a frustrating one, not just for the duo but for the audience. Indeed, the whole film simmers along without delivering much of an emotional resonance. This is highlighted particularly in the scene where Sissy sings 'New York, New York' - driving Brandon to tears, and the audience to pained boredom. Complete with awkward close-up.

One of the few talking points of interest is McQueen's use of full frontal nudity - Fassbender happily wanders around his apartment with his (impressive) endowment on offer, and the first time we meet Sissy - she is sans clothes. The latter perhaps has an important storytelling component, showing the closeness between her and Brandon despite their otherwise apparent distance. The "Fassboner" seems less necessary, albeit impressive for other reasons.

The full frontal nudity led to 'Shame' receiving the dreaded NC-17 rating in the US - the equivalent to an 18 in the UK, but with added connotations - only a handful of films are released every year with such a rating. While the film is somewhat forgettable, the lasting legacy of 'Shame' may be to finally re-introduce the NC-17 rating to respectability - allowing directors to fulfil, and not compromise, their visions.

The shining highlight of 'Shame' is undoubtedly Fassbender. His work is supreme considering his role is not dialogue-heavy. Brandon's inner battle is made captivating almost solely through Fassbender's expressions. McQueen does succeed in stressing Brandon's struggles with intimacy but, of course, Fassbender is at the heart of each of these moments. Perhaps third time will be a charm for the duo.

★★&#189 (out of five)

'Shame' is showing in selected cinemas across the UK now.
Like us on Facebook // Follow us on Twitter

Download: Leah Kardos - DFACE (Practice This Video)

Words: Saam Das

I'm one of those people that likes to check out support acts when they go to see gigs. And by that, I mean Googling the fuss out of them beforehand. Especially when the name is an unfamiliar one. So when I discovered Leah Kardos was supporting Rumour Cubes at the launch of their debut album, I decided to investigate further. In 'DFACE (Practice This Video)', I found a contemporary classical gem.

Aussie-born Kardos is currently studying for a PhD in music composition, and produced her own David Bowie covers project, My Lithium & Me. She's moved from Brisbane to Bedford, composing experimental classical music for soundtracks, as well as recently releasing her own debut album, 'Feather Hammer'.

'DFACE (Practice This Video)' combines a serene piano melody with a 65daysofstatic-esque fondness for glitches, sparse but effective use of percussion and a compelling sample from a piano tutorial. The consequent arrangement is mesmerising. Download the track below, and listen to a selection of songs from 'Feather Hammer' in the album sampler widget.

Louisa Rose Allen first came into prominence via her Loui Rose persona, which made waves across the blogosphere during 2011. We'd been holding back posting about her but today, in her new guise as Foxes, she's signed a major label record deal with Sony. So I figure now's probably as good a time as any to talk about her synth-pop anthems.

Foxes comprises Loui and guitarist/co-writer Sam Dixon, a set-up akin to the likes of La Roux and Daughter. Indeed, her past demos shared many a similarity to the latter with a heartfelt acoustic sound. No longer though as we see from January's debut Foxes single, which came out on the home of the hits, Neon Gold.

A-side 'Youth' is built around Louisa's strong vocals, emboldened by majestic widescreen pop production, worthy of The Sound Of Arrows. The b-side, 'Home', goes back to the roots of her previous guise albeit with a slow-burning, night pop twist. A contrasting mix but one which suggests that Foxes won't be struggling for top material when the debut album eventually drops.
