Reading about Boehner’s latest debt ceiling proposal many things come to mind, unconstitutional, rendering Congress powerless, creating a nearly almighty legislative body, which consist of only a dozen people. But let us take a look at what started the discussion about this outrageous plan. The Huffington Post reported yesterday evening, that House Speaker John Boehner wants to create a new legislative body, called the “Super Congress”, but read for yourself. This “Super Congress,” composed of members of both chambers and both parties, isn’t mentioned anywhere in the Constitution, but would be granted extraordinary new powers. Under a plan put forth by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his counterpart Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), legislation to lift the debt ceiling would be accompanied by the creation of a 12-member panel made up of 12 lawmakers — six from each chamber and six from each party. This would basically institutionalize the meeting of congressional leaders, while not a bad thing in itself, the powers these twelve lawmakers would receive are even more scandalous. Legislation approved by the Super Congress — which some on Capitol Hill are calling the “super committee” — would then be fast-tracked through both chambers, where it [...]

Everyone with a basic understanding of the Bill of Rights should be quite amused about the way Herman Cain tries to attract new voters. Cain said on Fox News, that he thinks that the American people have the right to ban mosques. He even stated, that this can be done in accordance with the First Amendment, because Islam itself combines state and church. Saying that the people can legally prevent people of any religion from building a house of worship is wrong, because it infringes of their basic rights. The people just have to read the First Amendment. Furthermore, his argument that the First Amendment somehow guarantees that every religion practiced in the United States has to be free of all kinds of laws and rules, does not take the wording of the First Amendment into account. Instead it is based on the phrase, that it guarantees the separation of church and state. Yet, the first part of the First Amendment reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;”. It could not be any clearer than that, could it? In my opinion, the First Amendment was phrased this certain way, to [...]

Afghan President Hamid Karzai announced two weeks ago, that the United States is engaging in peace negotiations with the Taliban. From a western point of view, the Taliban is an ethnic group, which practices one of the strictest interpretations of Islam, denounce women their most basic rights. They also harbored al Qaeda and made sure that Osama bin Laden had a place to establish terror camps and plan the 9/11 attacks. It is obvious, that after archiving the main objective in Afghanistan, which was killing bin Laden, the Obama administration now seeks a clean way out of Afghanistan. A peace treaty would be the easiest one, because nobody expects the Taliban to be defeated anytime soon. But what would such a treaty look like? Afghanistan has a new constitution since 2004, which sets the legal framework for a democratic system, gives the Afghan people basic rights like freedom of speech and assembly. The Taliban would have to agree to uphold the constitution and to support and protect other achievements like education for girls. Expecting them to do this is naive, because all of these rights were non-existent or even banned under the Taliban rule. Some even contradict their basic belief [...]

Ever wondered, whether all those people, who see UFO’s in the sky, are either lucky, hallucinating or even lying? It actually does not matter any more, because the Iranian government recently revealed their first flying saucer. Yes, they really developed a device that kind of looks like all those pictures, you might associate with flying saucers and unidentified flying objects. It actually is an unmanned drone, built for surveillance operations. According to the Iranian Fars News Agency, the device includes a 10-megapixel camera and is able to transmit data back home immediately. As you can see on the picture, the drone probably works like a small helicopter and therefore might look like a flying saucer, while in the air. First off I was very unsure what to think of this, what its purpose was, but that cleared up pretty quickly. Building an unmanned surveillance drone is just the next logical step in developing their military arsenal. Emphasizing that it is an Iranian project is also quite significant, because it is supposed to show the governments of Israel, Saudi Arabia and most importantly the United States, their capabilities. Despite the fact, that its functionality cannot be confirmed, it is still a [...]

This morning a major quake with a magnitude of 8.9 hit the east coast of Japan, which is the strongest earthquake in this region on record. Shortly thereafter a massive tsunami hit the Sendai region and resulted in a massive flooding of the surrounding areas. Due to the location of Japan’s cities, which are mostly close to the coastline, this Tsunami hase done extensive damage. Many tsunami waves still hit the coast of Japan. While there are approximately 600 casualties confirmed yet, many factories, houses and even a nuclear power plant caught fire as a result of the quake. The tsunami makes it nearly impossible to reach these fires and they therefore can spread easy. Reportedly four nuclear power plants have been shut down as protection measures. Aftershocks are still expected throughout the day. It is reported, that some 3.9 million Japanese households are without power at the moment. Update 1: Japanese government admits problems cooling nuclear power plants, but they do not expect radiocative leakage. An emergancy state took effect to properly cope with this problem. Update 2: Tsunami will hit Hawaii, Australia and South America later today. Update 3: Area surrounding Fukushima nuclear power plant will be evacuated [...]

In a despicable scheme, Wisconsin Republican Senators voted on eliminating collective bargaining rights from public employees, in absence of the 14 Democratic State Senators who still hide out in Illinois. The 14 Democrats left Wisconsin to prevent the Senate from voting on the controversial budget Governor Walker proposed. While the bill sparked massive protests in Madison, Wisconsin, because it would strip public unions from their right of collective bargaining, Walker always defended it as essential for a balanced budget. He tried to convince the public, that it was not an attack on public unions, but a step towards a matter of fiscal responsibility. Many people suspected this to be just an attempt to sweet-talk the public into accepting the bill, yet now we know that he just lied to everyone. Senate Republicans had to think of a way to circumvent the required quorum, so they split up the bill. They basically voted on a bill with the intent of rendering public unions useless. It seems that they were so desperate that they did not even try to cover this ploy up. This abhorrent bill is just intended to alter the political landscape and does in no way represent the will [...]

Earlier this week, I promised to various changes, some were already implemented, when I posted the news, while others were too complex to add right away. The most important feature of this updated is the new banner for the blog. The idea behind this is the simplicity, which corresponds very well with the general theme. Another feature is the new Fair Politics USA – Blackberry Messenger Group. As BBM is an awesome tool to discuss topics it was a logical step to create this group. It is open for everyone, so join and enjoy. Just open your BBM, scan the barcode and you are good to go. I am even considering adding some of the BBM discussion on the page.
Most recent reports from Libya describe a dire situation, which suggests a civil war is looming. Rebel troops and Gaddafi supporters are constantly fighting for key towns close to the capital Tripoli. The uprising was most successful in the eastern parts of the country, far away from the capital, which can be explained by the tribal nature of Libya. Similar to Iraq under Saddam Hussein, in times of peace the central government has sufficient control over the various tribes. Once the regime was destabilized in 2003 there was no control left, just as it is now in Libya. The rebel forces are also supported by some military officials, who joined the fight against the regime, which was a huge blow to Gaddafi. Furthermore various news agencies release reports of possible human rights violations and massacres by the regime, which sparked the debate about a no-fly zone. Recent reports suggest, that NATO forces are preparing for some sort of military engagement in Libya. It is not certain what the actual plans are, but everything from the establishment of a no-fly zone to an attack on Gaddafi’s army. Either one could be regarded as an act of war and do we really [...]

It has long been rumored, but now it is official: Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich explores the possibilities of a presidential campaign. Wait, what? He is exploring? Isn’t that what he is doing for several months now? Apparently not, because setting up an exploratory committee is an official step before he finally throws his hat in the ring. This allows him to evaluate popular support and also raise funds with fewer restrictions than an actual candidate. This seems to be a great way to get his hands on some early money, considering that he will not have to report his donors. While this gives Gingrich an edge over rivals, such as Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, neither of whom has come to a decision yet. While it might look, as if he wants to know if the people want him to run, it is much more likely, that he just uses this to stall his announcement, yet still stay in the spotlight. It is much more important, what the polls say, than how the people respond to his website and how many Facebook likes he gets. Opinion polls just give so much more accurate information on [...]

While I was absent for about three months, a lot has happened in the US and in the world. The federal government is on the brink of a shutdown, GOP state legislatures and governors have declared war on unions, Tunisia and Egypt ousted their autocratic leaders and Libya is facing a bloody civil war. There is so much going on at the moment, which made me come back and continue writing. I plan to implement various changes over the next couple of weeks, including the following: - Disqus commenting system (done) - World, ePolitics category (done) - further social media integration - a weekly column on the political status quo - new banner - complete blog redesign (long term) These are the main things I want to get done to give you a better experience. The new commenting system is already installed and the new World category will feature articles on topics from all over the world. ePolitics will contain everything from specific smartphone apps to certain new media campaign techniques in the upcoming elections. The rest will be added soon, except the complete design overhaul, which will definitely take a while. I will keep you posted on the latest [...]
