Hard Times Obama Pancake Cap Painting, In Progress

A new Obama Pancake painting in progress. I'll have some new paintings posted for auction on Ebay later today. All original paintings are posted with a starting bid price of .99 cents.

I've been running into this unfinished painting now and again for the past few months not knowing what to do with it. Started during Chris' harp performance Minnesota Legacy concert tour in January, it was inspired by driving through some very desolate ('appearing'-especially during what turned out to be the coldest week of winter) parts of Northern Minnesota and wondering about the similarity between our Great Depression and today's Great Recession. So I decided to paint a Tom Joad-ish Obama.

I uncovered the painting again a few day ago from a pile of God-knows on a strewn drafting table and decided to post it anyway, thinking that might encourage me. Painting out the eyes was a last minute decision before laying it on the scanner. I think that was correct. I've always marveled at the bravery of the blind, and especially at the good attitude on the faces of a few which seems not an uncommon trait.

The collar behind Obama's head; I'm not sure what that is. It might not be his collar. What should it be? Perhaps only a collar.

A painting of myself-Dan Lacey, The Painter of Pancakes, nude and querying the famous George Washington Chicken McNugget on the floor of my vast basement art studio.

I cannot say what in my delirium I asked the indolent McNugget.

All I recall is that the initial knowledge requested of my heart was refused; for like Obama in a Jon McNaugton painting the McNugget could only offer his back as a cold, crusted, and somehat oily answer. "Why are we so alone?" perhaps I queried, knowing that I was not addressing the soul of one chicken but a composite of many, disinfected and bleached, and now shaped by chance into the father of a country he would not today recognize, and likely to deem completely free only following the event of his own consumption. His powdered wig, long since breaded; his noble authoritarian nose, long since breaded; his frilly ruffled shirt, long since breaded..conspired to offer no solace or direction.
The only answer I received was the cold hard floor beneath my body, except in the places where I kneeling on painty carpet remnants-this and the muffled sound of a thousand rickety franchises complaining mightily as they threw themselves against the fists of the hard Minnesota wind.

A Few Outdoor Photographs Of My Blue Pancake Whitney Painting

So difficult to photograph this painting, so I took it outdoors. Better, I think-

This painting isn't so much about Whitney as it is a self-portrait regarding a person I didn't know who died, a famous person who I have some sympathy for, and for whom it would be nice if I could save in some way. But I can't. God is the pancake in the sky; our own construct. It is the thought that counts.

Sketches For Paintings

I've accumulated over the course of the past few years hundreds of sketches for paintings. Here's five, which include two sketches for a new commissioned Michael Jackson / Whitney Houston painting-

We usually associate heaven with clouds, but what about other elements? Water is 'life' and clouds are water vapor...pure water above, stagnant water below. The creature grabbing Whitney is a Bobby Brown dirty water kraken-not sure if I'll include that in the final painting.

A sketch for a new Obama unicorn painting which I'm calling 'Obama Hairshirt Sweatervest Unicorn.'
You can see notes for the symbolism I might incorporate.
