Check out the new edition of Pro Football Weekly's pre-season picks. The Atlanta Falcons are on their list as winning the NFC South in 2010. That's a big prediction since the reigning Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints are still in the division.

Strangely enough, after reading the whole thing, they don't give any concrete reason for their opinion. The positive signs are back to back winning seasons, the maturing of Matt Ryan, and the healthy return of Michael Turner. All valid items I'm sure. But somewhere along the way they should give specifics on how the Atlanta Falcons plan on knocking off the Saints.

I'm thing the Falcons will be a better team in 2010. Possibly good enough to win the division but certainly good enough to get into the playoffs. If Turner stays healthy, if the defense can stop a good passer, if the special teams can make some plays. The same ifs that face every NFL team out there.

Make no mistake, the Steelers vs Falcons game is a winnable game for Atlanta. Kicking Pittsburgh while they're down would be a good way to set the tone for 2010. With the Saints expected to challenge for another Super Bowl, staying even with New Orleans is a must for the Atlanta Falcons.

Expect Eagles vs Falcons to be a huge collision. Both the Falcons and the Eagles have every right to be hopeful of a playoff spot in 2009. The Falcons got there in 2008, with rookie quarterback Matt Ryan. The Eagles appeared under venerable QB Donovan McNabb. Looking at this matchup from the pre-season, I'm thinking it has big time playoff implications.

We'll examine it with more detail later in the season, and certainly with more information on bothe the Eagles and Falcons. From this perspective though, I can see the Eagles battling the Giants and Cowboys in a close race in the NFC East. I can also see the Falcons in a tight contest with the Saints and Panthers in the NFC South.

So both the Eagles and the Falcons would be coming into this game with a "must win" attitude and that's the element that makes NFL games great. If you're looking to be at an important, season changing game, Eagles vs Falcons tickets could be the right choice.

By all indications the Buccaneers at Falcons matchup looks like a piece of cake for the Falcons. But remember, this is the NFC South, where no member has won consecutive title in over a decade, and today's winner is tomorrow's meat. The Alanta Falcons underwent a marvelous reconstruction in a remarkably short time, posting an 11-5 record in 2008. Falcons ticket holders have high expectations of another playoff spot and maybe even a Super Bowl if the cards are right.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers collapsed in 2008, booted Jon Gruden, and now have a sense of dissaray about them, having dumped their offensive co-ordinator just prior to the season starting. With everything stacked against them, they're just the kind of team to come in and wreak havoc on an NFC South opponents plans. That's just the way it's been in this division.

Realistically, Bucs vs Falcons looks like a laugher. Atlanta at full strength should roll over the Buccaneers. Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, and Roddy White should have a field day with a new Buccaneers secondary still learning a new system. If everything was played on paper, and NFl rivalries didn't count for anything, bank on Atlanta. But in this league and especially this division, Falcons vs Buccaneers is far from a sure win for Atlanta.

Redskins vs Falcons tickets are a one way pass to one of the better battles being waged in 2009 by the NFC South and NFC East. The Atlanta Falcons are one of the rising stars in both the NFC South and the NFC in general while the Washington Redskins appear to be trying to find their way home. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder is prone to throwing money at problems while the Falcons have gone the other way, carefully selecting both talent and character to build for the long term.

When the Redskins line up against the Falcons in the Georgia Dome, they'll be bring in some high priced talent. Most notable is Albert Haynesworth, who signed a megadeal to strengthen the Redskins defensive line. Otherwise Washington has toed the line, keeping intact a roster that finished 8-8 last season. Look for QB Jason Campbell though, to be a spark plug waiting to go off. Campbell is in the final year of his contract and carrying a chip on his shoulder. Wide receiver Santana Moss remains the mainstay of this passing game, and Falcons defensive backs will have to keep him in check. The Falcons D-line and linebackers will have to deal with Clinton Portis, a bruising runner who still has some gas in the tank.

But Falcons ticket holders will be at the Redskins game to see their Wunderkind Matt Ryan, battering ram Michael Turner, and newly signed Pro Bowl Tight End Tony Gonzales make mincemeat out of a Redskins defense that has suffered some sever blows in the last few years. While the signing of Haynesworth probably boosted the rush, serious problems remain in the secondary where teams found success with the long ball in 2008.

My take? Get ready for the Redskins vs Falcons game to be a re-affirmation of the Falcons ascendancy in the NFC. Atlanta may not surprise anyone as they did last season, and the Falcons have one mean slate of games. But they're fundamentally better then the Washington Redskins and running on a much more even keel. Barring major injuries, the Falcons topping the Redskins is a done deal.

Chicago Bears at Atlanta Falcons Oct 18th - Georgia Dome

By the time this Bears vs Falcons game rolls around things should be heating up. The Falcons have a pretty tough schedule, facing the Dolphins, Panthers, and Patriots the first three weeks. getting through that even 2-1 would be a pretty good start. A West Coast trip to face the 49ers leaves the bears and Falcons matching up in Mid-October, when the weather is getting cool and the NFL is starting to burn. Nobody wants to get left behind.

The Chicago Bears will bring Jay Cutler and Matt Forte. The Falcons will bring Matt Ryan and Michael Turner. Atlanta likes a big pass rush from the D-Line, especially, John Abraham. Chicago wants linebackers Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher in on every play. But both the Falcons and Bears have some unanswered questions in 2009:

Can Matt Ryan duplicate or even improve on his rookie performance?
Will Tight End Tony Gonzales take the onus off Michael Turner, give the offense more options, and improve the running and passing game?
Can the youngsters on the Falcons defense step up and improve on the play of the veterans they've replaced?
Can Jay Cutler be the man to make the Chicago Bears Super Bowl worthy?
Is Matt Forte durable enough to be involved in all phases of the offense as he was last season?
Does the famed Bears defense still have it's punch?

Panthers at Falcons tickets should be one heck of a way for Falcons fans to get their NFC South schedule kicked off. Let's face it, the Falcons, Carolina Panthers, and New Orleans Saints, will probably spend most of 2009 beating each other to death. This Panthers and Falcons matchup is no different.

The Panthers will come into the Georgia Dome looking to pound the rock, using DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart as battering rams while hoping Steve Smith can provide some oomph through the air. The Falcons will answer defensively with a heavy reliance on Peria Jerry and hopefully better production from DT Trey Lewis. John Abraham and rookie Lawrence Sidbury will have to keep the Panthers passing game in a hurry up mode.

I would love to predict what the Falcons are going to do, but the whole NFC South has me baffled. The Falcons will be playing one exceedingly tough schedule, and it's going to take everything they've got, with a little luck in the injury department, to be there at the end. This Dolphins-Falcons matchup is just the beginning so let's take that on first.

The Miami Dolphins will throwing a running game at the Falcons. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams cpmbined for almost 1,600 yards last season. To stop it, the Falcons will be using a defensive line that's banking on rookie Paria Jerry providing a push, along with veteran John Abraham, and Jamaal Anderson. While still an unknown odds are that this will be a tough unit to run against. But Atlanta is also going to be starting a new pair of linebackers and the jury is still out on these guys.

Taking advantage of that will be up to the Dolphins quarterback. Right now that looks like Chad Pennington again, a veteran that can slice and dice an inexperienced unit. And the Falcons are very young in the secondary after losing Lawyer Milloy and Dominique Foxworth.

To be effective against the Dolphins, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan will have to play as well as he did in his rookie season. No sophomore slump allowed here. Having Michael Turner is a huge plus, and now with Tony Gonzales, Ryan has anothet weapon to keep opposing defenses on their toes.

I fully expect this Dolphins vs Falcons game to go down to the wire. Opening day games tend to reveal a lot and pre-season doesn't reveal anything that isn't glaringl;y obvious anyway. The dege here goes to the Falcons, playing at home and riding high on the legs of Michael Turner.

Falcons Head Coach Mike Smith will be relying on an experienced coaching staff to keep this train moving, but it's the smattering of young players now on the Atlanta roster that will be shoveling the coal.
