There were some good moments, some sucky parts and then some really amazing parts this season.

The season finale ended on a cliffhanger and we lost important members of the resistance. However, the 2nd Mass also scored a major hit and scored a major kill!

So the finale episode started with the 2nd mass deciding if they wanted to part of a military coup. They decided that wasn’t what they wanted. Before they could be locked up, there was a perimeter breach and everyone ran to check it out.

The rebelling skitters came a knocking to work with the 2nd Mass and try and co-ordinate a joint attack on a new weapon developed by the Fish Heads. The Charleston military were having none of it and were only delayed in killing the skitters by Tom and the rest of the 2nd Mass showing support for the rebelling aliens by creating a human shield around them. The message was clear – Charleston would have to kill the 2nd Mass if they intended to kill the Skitters. Charleston backed down.

Ben explains that there is a new weapon nearing completion. The Fish Head they captured and allowed to live is in charge of the alien military tactics. He’ll be at the weapon base to check that it’s been completed correctly etc. This would be a perfect time to take him out and destroy the weapon. Tom and the 2nd Mass are eager to help, but their new friends are not as trusting as the 2nd Mass. The Charleston military group secretly strikes the skitter camp at night killing a number of them. However, no one saw who attacked them and there’s nothing that can be done. The 2nd Mass decide to complete the mission themselves.

Ben leads the 2nd Mass to the weapon. Once there they are captured by Karen and the evil overlord. Dai is killed in the cross fire.

Once the remaining 2nd Mass are restrained Karen shows us how kinky she is and that she is clearly a supporter of S&M. She takes the alien version of a tazer and uses it on Tom to try and gather information as to how he knew they would be at the weapon facility and how they knew about the weapon.

When Tom refuses, Karen kisses Hal and he becomes unconscious. She then uses the alien torture device on Weaver and it’s only when she moves towards Doctor Anne Glass that a revelation is made. Anne is pregnant with Tom’s child. Anne hadn’t told Tom yet and Karen is stopped from electrocuting her by the rebelling skitters showing up at the facility.

Red Eye tries to kill the Master Fish Head, but is seriously hurt in the process. Tom is successful in killing the Master and Karen escapes from the facility, after she tells Tom the weapon was never intended for humans. Tom also wonders why the weapon was pointed at the sky.

Red Eye dies and seems to share some silently communicated information with Ben. He tells Tom to keep up the fight.

The 2nd Mass return to Charleston and are welcomed home as heroes. Ben does a 180 and has decided to stay with the 2nd mass instead of the skitters. What did Red Eye tell him to change him mind? What does Ben know that no-one else knows?

Anne can’t figure out what’s wrong with Hal. Hal awakens to an empty room. He goes to the bathroom and we see a worm crawling under his eye. It comes out and wriggles into his ear. It’s exactly like the bug that Red Eye put in Tom, except this one was planted by Karen and may come with a few upgrades.

Shortly after, there appears to be an earthquake. When the 2nd Mass leave the underground bunker, they see strange objects falling from the sky. These mini parachute vessels open and a bi-ped in a weird suit steps out. Each pod holds a single being. The helmet open to reveal a new type of alien.

Audiences are left wondering if these aliens are a potential ally or a new enemy?

I don’t want to go into too many details for those that haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but I thought it was well worth watching!

This weeks action was more about politics and people hungry for power. Who needs aliens to break down our society when we do it perfect well by ourselves?

This weeks episode reminded me a lot of Battlestar Galactica when they had the episodes that didn’t focus on the Cylone/human war but instead focused on how flawed we are as a species. Those episodes tend to not be very subtle and the same could be said for episode 9 of the second season of Falling Skies.

So the 2nd Mass thought that everything would be sunshine and rainbows now that they had reached the holy land of Charleston. Needless to say it soon became aparent that there was no sunshine (located in an underground mall from the looks of things) and there were no pots of gold at the end of the rainbow. There was a welcome party with food and cheers, but that soon died down and reality kicked in.

There were numerous signs that things weren’t quite right. Anne Glass reports to the medical wing and is treated like a low level Paediatrician. Now she’s a military doctor so she feels like she’s not being used to her full potential. Matt has issues at school with the other kids. People in Charleston don’t seem aware of the aliens outside at all. I guess they are happy living in their own safe bubble. The thing is, someone should remind them that bubbles burst.

Tom is reacquantained with his old Professor in the form of Terry O’Quinn. He’s more interested in keeping the status quo by keeping himself in power. He controls the military and he has no interest in facing the aliens. Tom finds himself arguing against his friend and soon has a falling out with the leader of Charleston.

A harnessed kid comes to the compund looking for Tom. He’s been sent by red eye to talk about the rebellion. However, Tom and the 2nd Mass are apprehended and not allowed to leave the compound. Eventually there is a coup and the military take over Charleston.

Geez is that more aliens falling from the skies?

Episode 8 was a little weird in parts and was really one long car ride to Charleston. For those that get car sick, I think I finally understand! I was really waiting for matt to ask if they were there yet, but he seemed to get distracted with his new guest.

Hal, Maggie and Pope act as the advance party to scope out the road ahead and make sure there aren’t any nasty surprises up ahead. However, they have to change their heading when the radiator starts to over heat. During this car bonding time, we find out that Pope had kids in Florida. I’m betting they thought their dad was really cool. Their mum probably wondered how the hell she ever got in such a position….

So Pope agrees to fix the leaking radiator pipe and sends Hal off to collect water from the river. Pope suggests Maggie tells Hal about who she really is. The audience are left wondering if she had a sexual relationship with Pope before Hal came along or if she’s maybe one of his kids. Turns out, he’s alluding to some of the crap decisions Maggie made as a teen. Turns out she was in a correctional facility and gave birth to a child, which was taken away from her. She tells Hal and he’s stumped and unsure what to say. Surely he knew she wasn’t your typical American sweetheart. I’m not really sure why any of this came as a surprise.

They get back on the road and believe they are now behind the 2nd Mass convoy.

The main convoy is still on the road to Charleston. Weaver figures out that his driver is an ex-marine. Seems to be a big deal but I didn’t really get the whole significance of it or why they dragged it out for almost the whole episode.

They run over a harnessed girl and take her in. Matt gets all cosy with her and they talk about where the 2nd Mass are heading. Has no one learnt anything from Karen??

Matt shows his dad his will, in case he dies before they get to safety.

The convoy is forced to stop again when the bridge they need to cross is damaged. They think there is no safety in the town across the river that looks like a was scene. Weaver makes a great speak about making their own community, just in time for Colonel Porter to find the 2nd Mass and invite them into town.

Hal, Maggie and Pope are also with Porter as they were stopped by one of their patrols.

My Thoughts

I have the feeling that this weeks budget has been saved up for next weeks double episode finale.

The harnessed girl looked more alien than human and I was left wondering if she is able to activate/deactivate her harness. Tom showed some insight into the future and where the harnessed kids will fit into humanity if the aliens are repelled from earth.

This week there was no skitters, fish head, mechs or Ben.

Lourdes has definetely given up on religion and finally has some anger. Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! I have to say how happy I am about that. She drove me crazy in the first season with all her religious crap. Finally, some realism. God is not going to save you!

And overall… can someone please sort out the whole Hal and Maggie romance. It’s constantly up and down and it’s getting really old and tiring. Now I’m just hoping they break up so I don’t have to watch any more of that saga. Really these are the things they want to worry about? How about the alien invasion and the people who have been lost so far. If that wasn’t a reality call then nothing would be for those 2. Can’t they just get on with it and let all the little details or the past be in the past. It’s not like Maggie’s ever going to have to complete a form to get a job. No-one is gonna care about that crap.

I would have thought that people would have appreciated things more now after so much loss. I would have thought they would have been fighting tooth and nail to hold onto people they love, insted of finding ways to push them away.

When they return to camp they find out Weaver is recovered enough to take charge of the situation. Weaver questions the sanity of keeping Ben in the camp. However, Ben agrees that he should leave, but his dad wants him to stay.

Karen brings some Mechs to the hospital and demands they release her Master. While the Mechs cause a diversion at the front of the hospital, one sneaks round the back. Dr Glass, Lourdes and matt are in the hospital basement trying to collect as many medical supplies as possible, for when the 2nd Mass move out. Tom is able to blow up the invading mech, but this results in some of the building falling down, trapping the basement crew.

Matt, Anne and lLourdes find Jameel injured on the floor. They also discover a locked door with things making chittering noises behind it. Jameel dies when the critters start crawling form inside him and out his mouth. The basement crew run away and trap themselve inside the blood lab. Matt has to crawl throught the air vent to find help. He does and Tom and Pope come to save Lourdes and Anne.

Tom’s had enough and goes to talk with the Master alien. This is the same fish head he spoke to on the spaceship. Ben is used as a mouthpiece and he explians that they are not here to eradicate the human race. They have a task to complete, but they won’t tell Tom what it is. However, the alien is really worried about the skitter rebellion. When the alien threatens Ben’s life and explians humans are weak because of their compassion and sentiment, Tom shoots him to stop him from killing Ben.

Anne patches up the Master but his odds of survival don’t look good. Karen is brought in to negotiate for the life of the Master in exchange for the escape of the 2nd Mass. She agrees when she has no other option.

The 2nd Mass move out and are heading to Charleston. Ben tells his Dad that he’s heading out to find other kids that were previously harnessed and also to meet up with the rebellion. he knows the master alien was afraid and he wants to help people and find a way to rid the world of the Masters.

Thoughts

The Master said we are weak because of sentiment etc. However, is that not what Karen did? She agreed to spare the 2nd Mass in exchange for the life of her Master. Is that not sentiment rather than logic. Surely there are other aliens who can take on the leadership and sort out the rebelllion. I struggled to make sense of that part to be honest. Perhaps it will be explained more clearly later.

Karen also explianed that the aliens have taught her so much about the connections in the universe. Is this related to why they are here?

Also, if Ben was able to find out more from the Master because of the mind connection, why didn’t he share more of the details with the 2nd Mass?

Hey, who knew the Masters were such snazzy dressers? Does that mean they were always naked before?

Tom tries to follow Weaver’s plan to leave the hospital, but the 2nd Mass are running short of diesel, as it was used to power the hosiptal generators. Teams are sent out to look for the needed supplies.

While out on patrol, Maggie and Hal find a bunch of de-harnessed kids. One of them is Karen and they take her back to camp. Ben explains that Karen is still attached to the hive mind. Karen and Ben have never met before, but share a lot of similar experiences. Karen uses this to bond with Ben and encourages him to tell her about the rebelling Skitters. Ben falls for her double crossing ways.

Meanwhile, Weavers condition continues to worsen. His infection from the harnes bite has spread throughout his body. In order to fight the infection, Dr. Glass has to clean out his blood using some of the equiptment in the hospital. Weaver strats to recover but there’s no clue as to what the side-effects could be.

Surprisingly, Anthony and Pope return to the 2nd Mass. They were attacked by the aliens and questioned about Ben. Karen was the alien mouthpiece and they want Ben because of the skitter rebellion. Tom realizes Karen is toying with them and rushes to find Ben.

However, Maggie already figured out that it was Ben in danger, not Karen. She confronts Karen and Karen knocks her against the wall. Then she knocks herself out pretending it was Maggie. Ben believes that Maggie tried to hurt her since she’s a harness freak too, just like him. Karen convinces him they will never be accepted in the 2nd Mass and that they should leave and join the rebelling skitters. Ben is sucked in and agrees to take Karen to them, where she’ll be safe.

Tom is too late to stop Ben. However, one of the other patrols returns with lots of diesel.
