Joint pain can make it difficult to fall asleep, as you’re likely distracted by the pain and tossing and turning to find a comfortable sleeping position. You may also have difficultly staying asleep due to the pain, and wake up feeling stiff and sore. Poor quality sleep can cause other health issues and make it harder for your body to get the reparative rest it needs to function optimally. If you’re experiencing hip pain and difficulty sleeping, it’s important to diagnosis and treat the source of the pain so you can return to your normal sleeping patterns and daily activities.

Why does hip pain worsen at night?

Experiencing hip pain at night can be caused by things like pregnancy, poor sleep position, or an unsupportive mattress. However, it can also be symptom of a more serious condition, such as:

Osteoarthritis: When cartilage in the affected joint breaks down, causing the bones to rub together. This causes pain and stiffness.

Bursitis: When your bursae (fluid sacs around joints) become inflamed, which causes pain.

Tendonitis: When tendons become inflamed or irritated, it can cause and tenderness in the affected joint.

Sciatica: When there is pressure on the sciatic nerve, it can cause lower back pain that spreads to the hip, buttocks, and leg.

Sciatic-piriformis syndrome: When a piriformis muscle spasm puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, which causes numbness, tingling, and pain.

How are hip pain and sciatica related?

Sciatica is a symptom of an issue with your sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve begins at your lower spine, and splits and travels down each side of your buttocks, hips, and legs. It’s the longest nerve in your body. When there is pressure on this nerve or any of the nerve roots are irritated, the symptoms can radiate along the sciatic nerve, causing symptoms that spread downwards to your hips. Typically, the symptoms occur only on one side.

Sciatica symptoms include:

Pain in your lower back that comes and goes

Pain in your back, hips, and buttocks

Weakness in one leg

Numbness and tingling along the nerve

How are pregnancy and hip pain related?

Hip pain during pregnancy is fairly common. If you experience hip pain while pregnant, speak to your doctor about your symptoms to receive a diagnosis and treatment options. It is usually not a sign that there is a complication with your pregnancy. Some common causes behind hip pain during pregnancy are:

Weight gain: Gaining weight during pregnancy is normal, but it can put more stress on your joints. A large amount of weight gain may result in hip pain and other types of joint pain.

Posture: Weight gain and carrying more weight around your stomach can cause your normal posture to change. Your baby may also prefer to settle on one side of your body, causing more joint pain on that side.

Sleeping position: Sleep positions can be limited while pregnant due to the size of your belly. Sleeping on your side can cause hip and joint pain, as it puts more pressure on your joints. If you’re a side sleeper, consider putting a pillow between your knees while you sleep for more joint support.

Hormones: Your body’s production of a hormone called relaxin increases during pregnancy. This hormone relaxes the tissue that connects your bones. However, this can lead to discomfort in your pelvic area, including your hips.

Transient osteoporosis: During the second or third trimester, your body’s calcium and potassium levels may change, resulting in demineralization of your hip bones. This condition can cause hip pain, but typically gets better after the baby is delivered.

What advice do you have for someone whose hip pain is preventing them from getting a good night’s sleep?

If your hip pain is keeping you up at night and interfering with your daily activities, speak to your doctor to begin a diagnosis and treatment plan. Your doctor may prescribe an OTC pain reliever or arthritis medication. In some cases, such as pain caused by osteoarthritis, surgical intervention may be recommended.

Some simple ways to manage hip pain at night include:

Icing or heating the area (speak to your doctor to find out which is best for your condition)

Changing your sleeping position

Sleeping with a wedge pillow under your hip

Sleeping with a pillow between your knees

Getting regular massages

Changing your mattress or using a new foam mattress pad

Exercising regularly (low-impact exercises, such as swimming, water aerobics, walking, and yoga)

Stretching and walking throughout the day (avoid sitting for long periods)

Practicing good sleep hygiene to promote relaxation (going to bed at the same time every day, taking a warm bath before bed, avoiding electronics before bed, and ensuring your room is quiet and dark)

While slight aches and pains may be a normal part of getting older, pain that interferes with your daily life and sleep patterns isn’t normal. If you’re experiencing chronic hip pain, it’s important to reach out to a medical professional. If your hip pain is a symptom of a more serious condition, early intervention can help prevent complications.

If you’ve struggled with hip pain and mobility issues, you’re probably looking forward to your hip replacement surgery and returning to your normal life. However, you might feel a little nervous about what to expect after your surgery and how you should prepare.

Recovering from hip replacement surgery will take some time. It’s important to prepare your home to eliminate possible hazards, ensure everything you need is within reach, and that you have comfortable areas to sit down. Spending some time before your surgery preparing your environment will help your recovery go more smoothly, so you can focus on healing and regaining your health.

10 Ways to Prepare for Your Hip Replacement Surgery

Find a designated driver for before and after your surgery: You’ll need someone to drive to you the hospital and take you home afterwards. However, you’ll find yourself unable to drive for several weeks after your surgery. Find someone who will help you get to your appointments, and will help with grocery shopping and errands. Your doctor can also help you get a parking pass for disabled parking, so you don’t need to walk as far.

Install railings in high-risk areas: Your walk may be unsteady while recovering from hip replacement surgery. Look into installing railings around staircases and grab bars in your bathroom. These safety railings will give you more confidence to move around, and help prevent slip and fall accidents.

Get a walking aid: You may find that you need a walking aid during your recovery, such as a walker, cane, or crutch. Your doctor may provide a walking aid for you, or you can purchase one. If you’re unsure how to use your new walking aid, bring it to your doctor and ask for a quick tutorial.

Think about seating: You’ll be sitting more frequently to rest and heal after your hip replacement surgery. Ensure you have ergonomic seating available at home. You may want to purchase a new chair or borrow one from a friend or family member. Look for a cushioned armchair that is firm, rather than very soft and plush, to ensure you don’t sink into it.

Adjust the height of your bed: If you typically sleep in a bed that is high off the ground, you may want to lower your bed so it’s closer to the floor. This will help you get in and out of bed easily after your surgery.

Consider sleeping on the first floor: If you live in a multi-level home, you will likely find it difficult to go up and down the stairs while recovering from your surgery. You may want to set up a temporary bedroom on the first floor to ensure you have easy access to necessities.

Set up an area with your necessities: Make sure you have all your necessities in reach of your bed and favourite chair, such as water, the remote, your cell phone, medications, tissues, and some reading material. This will ensure you don’t need to worry about frequently getting up and finding the things you need most.

Rearrange your shelves and cupboards: If you typically store much-used items on high shelves or cupboards, bring them down so they’re within reach. You should avoid frequrntly reaching up or crouching down while recovering from your surgery, so keep the items you need easily accessible.

Look out for hazards: Take a thorough look around your home for items that might cause tripping accidents. While recovering from surgery, you may feel a bit disoriented and be more likely to trip and fall. Clear your floor space of loose cords, rugs, floor decorations, and children’s or pet toys to prevent accidents before they happen.

Stock your kitchen: Grocery shopping may be more challenging while you’re recovering from hip replacement surgery. Stock up on non-perishables and frozen foods to ensure you don’t need to grocery shop too often post-surgery.

Do you experience pain, aching or pressure when doing normal activities, such as lifting, coughing, or running? Do you feel a bulge or swelling around your abdomen or groin? If the answer is “yes,” you may have a hernia. Hernias are a common condition, but can severely interfere with your life if left untreated. The good news is that a hernia can be successfully treated with surgery, so you can resume your everyday life without pain.

What Causes a Hernia?

A hernia happens when an organ pushes through the muscle wall or other tissue that usually keeps it in place. There are many different types of hernias, although some types are more common.

If you suspect you have a hernia, it’s important to see your doctor right away. Left untreated, a common hernia can become a life-threatening strangulated hernia, which occurs when part of the hernia loses blood flow.

4 Most Common Types of Hernias:

Inguinal hernia: Caused by weak muscles. The muscles may have been weak since birth, or they might have been caused by strain, pregnancy, or obesity. It occurs when fatty tissue or part of the intestine pokes into the groin, and it more commonly affects men.

Femoral hernia: Also caused by weak muscles. The muscles may have been weak since birth, or they might have been caused by strain, pregnancy, or obesity. It occurs when fatty tissue or part of the intestine pushes into the groin area, and it more commonly affects women.

Umbilical hernia: Caused by strain, pregnancy, giving birth, or persistent coughing. An umbilical hernia occurs when fatty tissue or part of the intestine pushes into the belly button area.

Hiatal hernia: The cause of this type of hernia is not fully known, but it’s thought to be caused by a weak diaphragm or pressure on the abdomen. A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity.

Symptoms of a Hernia:

Swelling in the groin or scrotum

Pain in the area that is swelling

The swelling increases over time

Pain while lifting

A sense of feeling full

Signs of an obstructed bowel

An aching or burning sensation

Vomiting

Heartburn

Sometimes blood in the stool

Hernia Treatments

Hernia surgery is recommended to prevent the hernia from becoming larger or developing complications. There are two types of hernia surgery: open hernia repair surgery and laparoscopic hernia repair surgery. Both methods are safe and your surgeon will help you choose the best type of hernia surgery for your needs. You can go home the same day after your hernia surgery.

Open hernia surgery: This requires a larger incision in the abdomen, which gives the surgeon greater access to the hernia site. The surgery may involve a mesh insertion to strengthen the hernia repair. The recovery time is longer for open hernia surgery, but it may be a better option for your needs if your surgeon recommends it.

Laparoscopic hernia surgery: This requires a smaller incision. The surgery is done with a tiny camera (called a laparoscope) which allows the surgeon to see the hernia through the incision. The abdomen in inflated with carbon dioxide, which allows the surgeon to see the area more clearly during the procedure. The recovery time is shorter for laparoscopic hernia surgery, but it may only be suitable for certain hernia types.

Pressure headache. A runny, congested nose. Exhaustion. Difficulty breathing. Sinus issues can majorly disrupt your everyday life by interfering with your ability to work, socialize, and generally feel as heathy as you should. If you experience sinus issues regularly, you may have a condition called sinusitis.

Sinusitis can sometimes be mistaken for a particularly severe cold or allergies that won’t away. If your symptoms don’t respond to your usual allergy or cold medication, it’s important to be diagnosed and treated for sinusitis by an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctor before your symptoms worsen.

What is Sinusitis?

When your body is working as it should, your sinuses work to drain mucus from each sinus cavity into your nose. But one or more of your sinus cavities may become irritated and inflamed, which causes a host of uncomfortable symptoms. This inflammation is referred to as sinusitis. Your sinusitis symptoms may last a few weeks before getting better, or they may be chronic and difficult to fully resolve. Sometimes your symptoms may come and go, as your sinusitis may seem to get better then quickly worsen again. Acute sinusitis can be treated with nasal sprays and antibiotics, while chronic sinusitis may require surgery.

Different Types of Sinusitis

Acute: Acute sinusitis occurs because of temporary inflammation from allergies, a cold, or another type of irritation. Symptoms can last up to a month.

Chronic: Chronis sinusitis occurs when the symptoms last three or more months.

What are the Symptoms of Sinusitis?

Nasal congestion

Facial pain, swelling, or tendering

Reduced ability to smell and/or taste

Mucus running down throat

Yellow or green mucus

Difficultly breathing through nose

Headache

Nasal polyps (growths)

Cough

Fever

Fatigue

Sore throat

Treatments for Sinusitis

You should be examined by an ENT doctor to be properly diagnosed. After your ENT examination, your doctor will be able to determine if you have sinusitis, whether it is chronic or acute, and the best treatment for your needs.

Possible treatment options include:

Nasal sprays (decongestant sprays, corticosteroid sprays, saline sprays)

Antihistamines

Antibiotics

Computer Assisted Sinus Surgery

If you’re one of many Canadians looking for rapid access to surgery, you might feel tempted by the growing medical tourism industry. Medical tourism sounds like an ideal choice at first, as it promises patients will receive affordable yet high-quality medical care while on a tropical vacation. However, some promises are too good to be true. You may find the disadvantages of traveling overseas for medical care outweigh the benefits.

Before you book a flight overseas, it’s important to ask some key questions before travelling abroad for surgery. You might find that there are issues you hadn’t considered.

Can you trust the quality of the surgery?

In North America, it’s easy to gather information about your surgeon before the surgery. You can check their credentials, reviews, and history, which will help you feel confident about choosing the right surgeon for your needs. While there are many good surgeons abroad, their credentials, surgical speciality, and history may not be as easy to find. You may end up with the wrong surgeon, which could have permanent consequences on your health.

Can you check the credentials of the staff?

The nursing team is a critical component of your surgical outcome. A qualified, well-trained nursing team will be able to spot issues and move quickly to resolve them. A less responsive or inadequately trained nursing team may not be able to spot and treat issues until it’s too late. Even if you’re comfortable with the credentials of your surgeon, that will not be enough to compensate for a poorly trained nursing team as they will be taking care of you before, during, and after your operation.

Is it a high-quality hospital facility with technologically advanced equipment?

It’s very important that your surgery be conducted in a clean, well-staffed, modern hospital facility that uses high-quality equipment. When researching surgery abroad, don’t only look at facility photos on the website. If possible, try to find real photos taken by previous patients to ensure the photos are recent and accurately reflect the facility. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the equipment to ensure the facility isn’t using outdated technology. You should also ensure that the facility is located near a larger hospital in case an issue arises during your surgery and you need to be quickly transported to another hospital centre.

How will you receive follow-up care?

If you travel abroad, receiving aftercare following your surgery will be more challenging. You may have difficulty accessing your surgeon when you’re back home. Many doctors are reluctant to take on the care of a patient who received care abroad, as there may be concerns about the quality of the care and what was done. Staying within your own country for surgery will ensure you’re able to access the qualified medical care you need after your surgery.

What international, cultural, and language barriers will you face?

While English is commonly spoken in other countries, you may still experience communication issue if English is not the primary language. This can result in frustration and the healthcare team not fully understanding what you need. It’s also important to remember that the food will also be different, which may be an issue for patients who have sensitive stomachs. Some patients deal with nausea and vomiting after surgery, and foods your body isn’t used to can make these issues worse.

Are you following proper rules and regulations?

Sometimes patients want to avoid certain regulations in their own country that are preventing them from accessing the surgery they want. For example, reputable bariatric surgical centres will not perform surgery on patients with a BMI under 30. If you’ve opted to travel overseas to bypass any restrictions within your country, carefully reconsider your decision. These restrictions are in place for a reason. Speak openly to your doctor for more clarity and listen to their medical advice.

You’re lounging in your favourite chair reading the paper and the dog barks outside. Lifting yourself out of the chair, you hear the familiar sound of your joints popping and creaking. You let out a groan and place your hand behind your back to steady yourself. A few years ago, you used to be able to get up from the same chair without thinking about it, but now your joints need a bit more care.

While taking better care of your body is a normal part of getting older, being in pain isn’t. If you experience joint pain or stiffness, don’t brush it off as a routine part of aging. Your body is trying to tell you to something, so pay attention. If joint pain is a regular part of your life, talk to your doctor to develop a treatment plan, and consider the following five techniques to keep your joints healthy at every age.

Move your Body: Being inactive is one of the worst things you can do for your joints. Moving your body frequently will help your body stay agile and flexible. Keeping your muscles strong will also act as a cushion around your joints to keep them protected. Strong muscles absorb shock, which helps to prevent your joints from being stressed or injured.

Lose Weight: Being overweight puts unnecessary strain on your joints. Losing any excess weight will help lighten the load on your joints and make everyday tasks feel more comfortable. If you need help losing weight, consider working with a personal trainer who will teach you low-impact exercises to burn more calories.

See a Physical Therapist: Working with a physical therapist to increase your mobility and alleviate pain might be helpful, especially after a joint procedure. Follow any guidelines and advice given by your physical therapist. They may recommend you engage in specific stretches and exercises, or avoid certain movements and rest your body.

Take it Easy: If you experience joint issues, it’s important to slow down and not push yourself too hard. This can be especially hard for “go-getters” and active people. While it’s important to remain active, you may need to adjust your lifestyle. If you’re used to playing sports regularly, you may want to replace your favourite activity with a lower impact sport, like swimming.

Seek Out Care: Ignoring joint pain won’t magically make it go away. Your body is signaling that something is wrong. Make an appointment with your doctor to start your diagnosis. For some, your joint may be caused by an issue such as arthritis, and more severe cases may require a joint replacement. No matter your diagnosis, there are medical interventions, such a hip replacement surgery, knee replacement surgery, elbow replacement surgery, and shoulder replacement surgery, that can help you resume your normal, active life.

Clearpoint Health: Expedited Hip Replacement Surgery, Shoulder Replacement Surgery, Knee Replacement Surgery, and Elbow Replacement Surgery to Restore Your Mobility

Losing excess weight is an accomplishment to be proud of, whether you did it through diet and lifestyle changes, or you underwent bariatric weight loss surgery for extra help. While many weight loss surgery patients enjoy better health, mobility, and confidence, sometimes excess or loose skin can be left behind. Excess skin after weight loss occurs when the skin’s elasticity is unable to snap your skin back into place during weight loss. It’s more common for people who have lost 100 pounds or more.

It’s important not to let the fear of excess or loose skin hold you back from losing weight. Regaining your overall health and returning to a healthy weight is more important than loose skin on your body. You can also remove the excess skin at a private medical clinic. Depending on the location of the loose skin, these body procedures are often referred to as a body lift, tummy tuck, or arm lift.

How can you prepare for loose skin removal surgery?

First, it’s important to ensure your weight is stable and you’re not continuing to lose or gain a lot of weight. If you lost weight with a bariatric weight loss procedure, talk to your doctor to ensure it’s the right time for you to take the next step towards excess skin removal. Some bariatric centres, such as our SmartShape Weight loss Centre, have a 5-year aftercare program that will help you lose and maintain your weight after surgery.

Next, you need to choose an accredited clinic that offers the procedure and arrange a consultation. Your surgeon may recommend you avoid certain medications, and they will conduct a pre-operative health check and blood work evaluation to ensure a safe, positive outcome.

What happens when you have loose skin removed?

Your body lift, tummy tuck, or arm lift will be performed at an accredited private medical clinic. The procedure will be done under general anesthesia by a registered surgeon. An overnight stay may be required afterwards. Depending on the extent of the surgery needed, the procedure may be done in stages to allow you to recover between each surgery. The surgeon will be able to determine what’s needed and they’ll walk you through the surgical process during your initial consultation, so you feel comfortable with their expertise and know what your recovery process will look like.

After a body lift, tummy tuck, or arm lift, your surgeon may recommend wearing compression garments to help your body regain its shape. If the procedure was extensive, some physical therapy may be recommended. After a tummy tuck, you may need to wait a few days before you can walk normally. It’ll be a few weeks before you can carry things that weigh 15 pounds or less after your procedure. In a few months, you likely feel comfortable engaging in vigorous, full-body activities again.

Living in uncertain times presents new challenges for everyone as we learn to adapt our everyday routines and lifestyle to our “new normal”. However, those with chronic pain can be uniquely challenged by the new reality created by COVID-19. The additional stress brought on by the pandemic can worsen existing pain, and restricted access to healthcare can make managing chronic pain difficult.

While we’re all doing our best to adapt to our new normal, it’s important to continue to care for your health and reach out for support. There are a few ways you can manage pain at home and make life feel less stressful while facing these new challenges.

Self-Care

Going through stressful periods can exacerbate existing issues with chronic pain. This can be due to psychological distress, lack of sleep, poor diet, less exercise, muscle tension, and lower immunity due to stress. It’s important to practice healthy habits and self-care when dealing with pain, especially during challenging times. Light exercise, such as yoga, walking, stretching, and swimming, can help your body release tension by relaxing your muscles and promoting better mental health. Practicing meditation and mindfulness can also be a positive forms of stress management to alleviate feelings of pain and tension.

Telehealth

Accessing healthcare has been a challenge during COVID-19 and many patients have had their in-person therapies, appointments, and surgeries put on hold. However, it’s important to know that you’re not alone during this time. Telehealth is a convenient and safe way to access some of your regular medical professionals and therapies from home. Many medical professionals have adapted their practices to offer virtual services and consultations. Connect with your healthcare providers to see what virtual options are available to help you manage pain and receive care.

Other therapies

This may be an opportune time to expand your healthcare services and consider new forms of therapy. You may want to look into other healthcare options to help you manage pain, such as counselling, pain management therapy, and recreational therapy. If it’s an option in your area, in-person physiotherapy and massage therapy sessions could be helpful. If those options are unavailable to you or you need to remain at home due to a compromised immune system, consider virtual counselling sessions, or online mediation and yoga classes.

More Options for Pain Management: Surgery To Relieve Paint During COVID-19

Living is with chronic pain due to a health condition can severely impact your ability to live life to the fullest. While there are several forms of therapy available that can lessen feelings of pain, in some cases surgery is the best option to completely eliminate or dramatically reduce pain. These surgeries can include orthopedic and spine surgery, hernia surgery, and more.

It’s important to note that the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a backlog of elective surgeries throughout Canada. While many surgeries are considered ‘elective’ within the public healthcare system, these surgeries are often required by the patient to restore their health and relieve their pain. High demand for healthcare services means the average wait time between GP referral and most specialist treatment is 19.8 weeks in Canada.1 For specialties such as orthopedics, the average wait time is as long as 39 weeks.1 Once a consult is received, the delay between the consult and surgery can a year or longer. The current healthcare crisis due to the pandemic means those wait times are increasing further and Canadian hospitals are operating at a reduced capacity.2

However, there is an option to receive surgical care within the private healthcare system, so you can quickly access the care you need to resume your daily life.

Clearpoint Health Offers Private Care at Our Five Surgical Centres Across Canada to Expedite Your Healthcare

At Clearpoint Health, the wait time to see our specialists is usually less than a week, and surgery can often be arranged within a month. We offer Canadians the option to take control of their healthcare with private care from our fully accredited surgeons. From orthopedic surgery to hernia surgery, our accredited surgeons are available to provide the highest quality private care. Explore our full range of procedures and learn more about our five licensed surgical centres across Canada.
“If you’re an active person, playing with your kids, grandkids, travelling, hiking, golfing, skiing or biking are all important parts of your life, you want to keep doing what you love,” says Sara Mooney, Director of Operations at Clearpoint Surgical Centre Toronto. “You want to be able to live your life without pain and avoid subsequent comorbid conditions, like increased weight, chronic diseases, and loss of mobility. We’re offering people a Canadian choice for surgery that was not previously available.”

Feedback from past patients confirms the need is real and our successful pre and post-op protocols give patients the confidence to take control of their healthcare.

“Coming to Clearpoint Surgical Centre Toronto was the best investment I have ever made. This has changed my life. I can go for a walk without pain, and every step is a blessing,” said Kathie, a Total Hip Replacement patient from Alberta.

At Clearpoint Surgical Centre Toronto, patients can often have a procedure done within a month of their initial inquiry. Initial consults are conducted via telemedicine following a thorough review of a patients’ diagnostics, past and present medical history. Telemedicine is also used for post-operative monitoring to ensure that a patient feels comfortable, and allows them to address any questions they may have at any time. “We support patients as much or little as they need, working with them and those within their existing circle of care, family practitioners, physio and occupational therapists – before and after the procedure,” explains Mooney.

For Total Hip Replacements, surgeons opt for the Direct Anterior Approach, a less invasive method. This technique involves operating from the front of the thigh to reach the hip joint, versus the traditional method of operating on the side or back which requires cutting and reattaching tendons and muscles. The Direct Anterior Approach results in quicker recovery and less post-op pain compared to traditional hip replacement methods. You will be up and walking the day of your surgery under the guidance of our in-house physiotherapist.

The centre’s operating room is also equipped with a HANA table – a specially designed surgical table that allows for the surgeons to easily move the patient’s legs intraoperatively to ensure everything is balanced and aligned during the procedure. Surgeons also use a digital 3D measurement system called Intellijoint HIP, which helps accurately place and position implants needed for hip replacements and can greatly reduce recurrent instability, dislocation, and costly revision surgery.
