Join us as we celebrate Literacy Day- January 27!

Family Literacy Day takes place annually on January 27 to celebrate adults and children reading and learning together, and to encourage Canadians to spend at least 15 minutes enjoying a learning activity as a family every day.

In 2011, Canadians will Play for Literacy! Playing games that encourage literacy and numeracy - such as board games, card games and word games - is a great way for parents and children to practice their literacy skills and have fun

There are many activities scheduled around town at various venues.

Big Bam Ski Hill Now Open!

Big Bam Ski Hill is a volunteer-run community ski hill located on the south side of the community of Taylor on the Alaska Highway, approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of Fort St. John.

Big Bam is starting small and a great place to learn and play without traveling hours to the nearest alternative. With the community support in volunteers and patrols, Big Bam is striving to grow back into the hill it once was.

Nobody's Perfect
...because kids don't come with a manual

Nobody's Perfect is a free parenting program for parents with children age 0 - 5. By providing parents with an opportunity to come together with other parents of young children to discuss parenting, the program encourages mothers and fathers to make community connections, find new resources and make new friends.

It will be offered Wednesdays, January 19-March 9th from 6:00-8:00pm at North Peace Community Resource Society.

8 sessions focusing on:

    * Why children misbehave
    * Positive discipline that works
    * Handling tantrums and other common behaviour problems
    * Child development and the importance of play
    * Play ideas
    * Healthy eating for children and tips on picky eaters
    * Keeping our children safe and preventing injuries
    * Stress and healthy ways to cope

Discuss real life parenting situations & solutions.

The City of Fort St John’s annual High on Ice Festival is set for January 13 - 16, 2011.

This exciting signature event includes an International Ice Carving Competition, snow sculpting, toboggan races, children’s activities in the park, live entertainment, sleigh rides, an ice fishing derby, an “Over the Line” ball tournament, Mukluk Curling Bonspiel and Comedy Night.

Ice and Snow Event

Through the continued development of the Ice and Snow event, the City of Fort St John in partnership with the Fort St John Community Arts Council desires to create a celebration of visual art and local culture, an event that fosters our local artists and providea a venue for new enthusiasts to develop their skills and techniques related to carving, and offers a community based venue to showcase, celebrate, and promote Fort St John’s talented residents.

The High On Ice Festival’s Professional Carving is known globally as a premier competition for carvers. Further, the masterpieces created each year by professional and amateur carvers alike offers a unique attraction in Northern Canada and an established winter visitors’ destination in Fort St. John.

The Professional Team Competition invites professional carving teams from around the world to our event. As BC’s only National Ice Carving Association sanctioned event, Fort St John offers over $15,000 in prizes to be won. Competitors can enter as an individual or as a team of two and are given 12 ice blocks (10” x 20” x 40”blocks) to create a sculpture in 24 non-consecutive hours.

Professional

Professional carvers can compete in two artistic categories, Abstract or Realistic, and all works must be created within the 2011 theme, Land of Myth & Legend. A maximum of 8 teams (or 16 competitors) are accepted for this competition.

Amateur

Amateur ice carving invites community teams of ice carvers to enter in beginner or intermediate community categories on the Saturday of the festival. Click here for Amateur registration information.

Amateur snow carving events are designed to be a fun activity for the whole family to take part in. The ease of working with snow allows everyone to help create a work of art in a block of snow. Community snow sculptors will have a snow block for each team with friends, family and colleagues helping with their creation during the day on the Sunday of the festival.

Mayor's Challenge

As part of the amateur competition, the City of Fort St John also hosts an annual “Mayor’s Challenge” wherein dignitaries from area communities are invited to bring a team to the event to compete for bragging rights. (And a trophy!)

Community Celebration

In addition to the Ice and Snow events, the High on Ice Festival includes a community celebration featuring toboggan races, children’s activities in the park, live entertainment, sleigh rides, an ice fishing derby, an “Over the Line” ball tournament, Mukluk Curling Bonspiel and Comedy Night. It is organized by a planning committee made up of various community organizations and interested citizens, and planning starts in the fall of each year for the following year’s celebration. 5th Annual Gingerbread House Contest

The City of Fort St. John Visitor Centre is holding its 5th Annual Gingerbread House Contest during the month of December. Completed entries can be dropped off at the Visitor Centre (9523 – 100 Street) by 5:00 pm on December 6.

This is a great opportunity for families and friends to get together and have some holiday fun; there will be lots of fun prizes up for grabs – the more creative the entries, the better!

The theme for this year’s contest is “A Fairytale Christmas”. Bonus points will be awarded to entries that incorporate Fairytale elements into their creations. In addition, bonus points will be awarded to entries that are entirely edible. There is a maximum base of 26 X 18 inches this year - this is so we can fit in as many entries as possible.

Entries will be on display to the public during December 7 – 10 & 13 - 17.

You can either start at the Cultural Centre or you can join the bus at any stop along the Central Route. And of course, you can get off at any stop you like.
