Flick through any dance music mag right now and you’re guaranteed to come across a mention of Italo-disco. Browse through the racks down at your local record emporium and you’re equally likely to come across an Italian production shot through with not a little bit of “la dolce vita”.

The Italo style – think motoric pre-house beats, melodic analogue synths, arpeggiated basslines and heavily vocodered vocals which veer close to campness – has made something of a clubland resurgence of late, and its influence runs through European house productions like the name of seaside towns does through sticks of rock.

This unmistakably retro sound is nowhere more apparent than in the Roman Funk of Francesco De Bellis (AKA Francisco) and his Pigna Records cohorts Marco Passarani and Mario Pierro.

After a series of funk and Italo-heavy singles “Moon Roller”, “Esplanade 97”, “Fregna (The Age)” which have caused quite a stir amongst fans of modern electro-house, he’s about to release his debut album ‘Music Business’ on Nature.

As well as this, the three of them have together made an album that borrows heavily from their country’s mutant electronic strain of disco. “After 20 years people are finding new sounds from another time,” Francisco explains. “The Italo-disco is a good alternative. It’s fresh, like a new style.”

Having formed Nature Records in the mid-’90s, this trio of like-minded Detroit techno, street dance and Chicago heads Passarani, Pierro and Francesco have been working together collectively for over ten years, be it as Mat101 and Jolly Music (Marco and Francesco’s former incarnations) or on Nature’s baby brother label Pigna.

“The Pigna sound is a super combination of our own differences,” Passarani tells us of their label. It’s only now, however, that they’ve made a record that perfectly encapsulates the Pigna modus operandi. Pigna People’s ‘Let ’Em Talk’ LP, is arguably the most exciting house album to come from Italy in some time. As sexy and cosmic as it is punchy and jackin’, it’s proof that Italy’s alternative club scene is a million miles away from the insipid progressive and tribal house it had become synonymous with.

“Like the label, we did it because we couldn’t find anything that sounded like the music we wanted to hear on the ’floor,” Mario says of the Pigna sound. “We tried to accept the rules of the dancefloor and not make any compromises.”

“You can feel the Italo-disco influences in our music, as well as many other things,” continues Passarani. “We’re from Rome and this dramatic, atmospheric style is always showing up! It’s in our DNA.”

“Disco music has always had a big influence in Italy,” adds Mario. “Italians have this long history of melody and making harmonies out of things.”

They’re not the only ones looking to the past for creative inspiration. There’s a new wave of Italian producers like Franz & Shape, Ajello, Mogdax, Donato Dozzy, Fabrizio Mammarella, Cosmo and Guglielmo Mascio, most of whom are also Roman, making groovy, Italo-esque electronic house: tracks by both Franz & Shape and Ajello got recognition outside of Italy when tracks appeared on the ‘Italian EP’ on Relish last year, and a second EP, this time featuring Mammarella, is on the way at the end of the year.

Vicenza-based duo Mogdax have released a couple of EPs (‘Made In Italo’ and ‘Jack Ibiza’) of pitched down, Metro Area-esque house and spacey disco, and are working alongside Nu Funk Klan’s Mascio on his debut production outings.

So where does this fascination come from? “For me, this music is fun and the analogic sound is important to me,” Francesco says. “To me it’s a cheaper version of the American disco,” adds Passarani. “In Italy it’s seen as b-series music and is viewed as very cheesy and commercial, which is how a lot of Italo was in the ’80s. But after all these years we have slowly found that there were a lot of producers back then doing really good quality, innovative stuff.”

It was a music born as much as anything of restrictions, as Italian producers tried to ape the big Philly disco records – often produced with full orchestras for vast sums of money – on cheap home studio set-ups with polyphonic synthesisers and drum machines.

“That’s why a lot of it sounds so fresh, because somebody was trying to take those machines to the level of complexity of the Americans,” says Mario. “It’s a very early kind of house music. They were using the same electronic instruments as early house and techno producers, but with disco influences,” Marco continues.

Unlike their US counterparts, these pioneering Italian producers are much less recognised. Daniele Baldelli, Claudio Simonetti, Maurizio Dami (AKA electro legend Alexander Robotnick), Stefano Pulga, A Zanni and Celso Valli, as well as production outfits Kasso, Gaz Nevada, Steel Mind, Kano, Jago, Charlie, Scotch, Capricorn, Koto and Gazebo, amongst others, are only today getting the recognition they deserve, not least from UK producers and Italo revivalists Crème Organisation and Clone from The Netherlands.

Indeed, early house clubs like Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles’ Music Box in Chicago played a lot of Italo-disco, the infamous Hot Mix 5 label borrowed from its harmonic style and even in Italy when house first made its mark in the early ’90s, producers would take old Italo tracks and lay 909 drum beats over them.

“Dance music now must be about the song,” says Francesco of today’s cutting-edge house music. “It’s not about simple tools for DJs anymore.“Italo is like this because it was not a tool. It was a song with a big melody for fun and dancing and partying.”

It’s true – Italians do do it better!

Era da anni che desideravo intervistare Nicola Penna, in arte Nasty Boy.

Da appassionato che custodisce gelosamente molti dei suoi dischi e ne segue i passi da sempre, ho assistito nel tempo a una straordinaria evoluzione nel suo suono, coronata da release per alcune delle etichette d’avanguardia più prestigiose del panorama internazionale.

L’occasione perfetta per incontrarlo è il suo nuovo lavoro, uscito in un’affascinante edizione limitata su cassetta. Un’opera elegante che meriterebbe senza dubbio la solennità del vinile, ma che proprio nel formato tape ritrova un calore e un magnetismo intimo indiscutibile.

Nicola ci risponde direttamente dal suo studio, svelandoci i retroscena di quasi dieci anni di registrazioni analogiche e collaborazioni memorabili. Buona lettura!

INTERVISTA:

L’Evoluzione Sonora e il passaggio a Detroit

DAX: Nicola, parlaci di Te! Inverted Audio descrive il tuo percorso decennale come un “massiccio cambiamento”: sei partito dal minimalismo dubby e tecnico di tracce come Drain Monster (2009) per approdare a sonorità deep house influenzate da maestri di Detroit come Theo Parrish e Rick Wilhite. Come descriveresti questa maturazione personale e cosa ti ha spinto verso un suono più profondo e “mentale”?

NASTYBOY: Ciao Dario, come tu stesso hai detto, il cambiamento è stato notevole ma anche naturale. Il mio percorso musicale ha avuto inizio nel lontano 1996, in quel periodo il sound che prediligevo era molto orientato alla House con sfumature deep, posso dire con certezza che il cambiamento sul piano delle produzioni è stato influenzato da questo.

Ho registrato dischi come Drain Monster perché ho sempre visto il lavoro in studio come il momento ideale per sperimentare sonorità lontane dal mio “orecchio” – poi negli anni, il passaggio a quel sound che sento più vicino a me è stato naturale, ma continuo con costanza a sperimentare nuovi percorsi e idee.

DAX: Nel 2017 la tua traccia All Night Long è stata inclusa nella prestigiosa serie From Chicago To Detroit V5 di Descendants Of The Deep. Cosa ha significato per te condividere una tracklist con artisti del calibro di Vincent Floyd, Norm Talley e Jordan Fields?

NASTYBOY: In quegli anni avevo diversi dischi in programma con Jordan Fields, la traccia All Night Long è stata inserita quasi per caso in quel V.A. Jordan aveva diverse mie demos e poco prima della stampa del disco mi ha proposto di inserirne una.

Non avevo idea di quali fossero gli artisti coinvolti nel progetto From Chicago To Detroit – ovviamente è stato motivo di gran soddisfazione e sorpresa.

Il Progetto Nu Groove Tribute

DAX: Sotto l’alias Nico Groove, hai pubblicato il mini-album Nu Groove Records Tribute V1 nel 2015. Essendo un tributo a un’etichetta storica, come sei riuscito a bilanciare la citazione di quel “vibe” specifico con la tua identità di produttore, evitando che fosse solo un’operazione nostalgica?

NASTYBOY: Come ti ho anticipato poco fa, con Jordan collaboravo su diversi fronti e l’idea del mini-album è stata sua. inizialmente non ero molto sicuro di accettare la proposta, proprio perché lo spessore dell’etichetta in gioco era notevole.

Alla fine abbiamo scelto insieme quali tracce inserire nel disco e ha avuto un buon riscontro anche a distanza di tempo. quindi posso dire che Jordan non si era sbagliato!

DAX: L’artwork di quel disco è stato curato da Jordan Fields. Considerando che Fields appare spesso nel tuo percorso, che tipo di sintonia artistica si è creata con lui nel corso degli anni?

NASTYBOY: Lo spessore artistico di Jordan Fields lo conosciamo tutti, in quegli anni aveva molti progetti attivi e tra di noi la corrispondenza era giornaliera – molte di quelle idee si sono trasformate in releases, tra le quali anche il V.A. Chicago Basement Traxx e un remix che ho curato per una sua uscita..

Negli ultimi anni, per vari motivi, abbiamo rallentato entrambi, ma rimane comunque una persona disponibile e un grande artista.

La Connessione Finlandese (Puu/Sähkö)

DAX: Hai all’attivo diverse uscite su Puu, sublabel della leggendaria Sähkö di Jimi Tenor, con titoli come Closer To The Edge e NBI EP. Come sei entrato in contatto con questa realtà finlandese così d’avanguardia e in che modo la loro estetica “fuori dagli schemi” ha influenzato il tuo modo di produrre?

NASTYBOY: La collaborazione con Sähkö è iniziata nel 2016 , quando sono stato contattato da Tommi Gronlund, fondatore dell’etichetta. Tommi era stato a Berlino in quel periodo e dopo aver acquistato un mio disco, ha deciso di contattarmi per propormi una collaborazione con la label.

Da quel momento ho avuto modo di fare diverse uscite nel corso degli anni. Sähkö mi ha dato una ulteriore spinta nella ricerca musicale che a volte si è anche tradotta in musica come la traccia “ni ko – sink feeling” rilasciata in un V.A.

Quella traccia è stata prodotta utilizzando un unico synth, un casio CZ3000.

DAX: I tuoi lavori su Puu sono spesso associati a formati molto fisici, come i test pressing stampati a mano o i vinili da 180g. Quanto conta per te la cura del supporto fisico in un mercato dominato dal digitale?

NASTYBOY: Negli anni ho rilasciato molti EP sia in digitale che in vinile non ponendomi il problema del supporto, ma è innegabile che il supporto fisico ha un altro valore.

Sähkö, come altre labels con cui ho collaborato, cura molto sia la grafica che la stampa del vinile.

Ritengo che un prodotto con una elevata qualità estetica ha un maggiore impatto anche in termini di mercato.

Il Nuovo Capitolo: Tiella Sound

DAX: Il tuo ultimo EP, Don’t Leave, viene descritto come uno dei lavori più maturi della tua carriera. Perché hai scelto proprio Tiella Sound di Luca Bigote per questa release e come si inserisce questo disco nella visione “Good Music, Bad Marketing” dell’etichetta?

NASTYBOY: Ho avuto modo di conoscere Luca diversi anni fa a Berlino e negli anni siamo rimasti in contatto.

La scorsa estate ci siamo incontrati a Gaeta in occasione del Jazz festival e abbiamo parlato dell’idea di fare un EP che seguisse l’impronta della sua label, curandone la grafica con una cover disegnata a mano e realizzando una serie limitata di nastri, oltre al supporto digitale.

Quello che ci ha unito, oltre alle affinità musicali, è stata una visione comune anche sul motto della label: “Good Music, Bad Marketing”.

Siamo talmente focalizzati sulla musica e sulla sua qualità, che spesso il marketing, finisce inevitabilmente in secondo piano.

Entrambi non siamo sempre bravissimi a fare promozione di noi stessi, anche se in realtà nel tempo abbiamo fatto diverse cose che hanno funzionato molto bene.

Insomma, il “Bad Marketing” è più una filosofia (auto)ironica che altro.

DAX: In Don’t Leave, brani come Slide Down richiamano l’ipnosi urbana di A Guy Called Gerald, mentre la title track evoca l’epoca d’oro della deep house. Come riesci a far dialogare influenze così diverse — da Chicago a Manchester — mantenendo un linguaggio che le fonti definiscono “unico ed elegante”?

NASTYBOY: Non credo di avere una formula ben definita.

Trascorro tanto del mio tempo in studio, tutto ciò che produco è fatto in maniera spontanea! sicuramente il mio orecchio è abituato a un certo sound che involontariamente influisce sulle mie produzioni.

Tecnica e Studio

DAX: Le tracce di Don’t Leave sono state registrate al Dus Studio di Vibo Valentia nell’arco di quasi dieci anni (2015-2024). Ci racconti come l’uso di hardware analogico specifico, come il Roland Super JX-10 o l’Akai MPC 2000 XL, ti permette di far “respirare” i groove in modo diverso rispetto a una produzione interamente digitale?

NASTYBOY: Di solito in fase di registrazione effettuo diversi passaggi prima di arrivare al sound che desidero, senza trascurare le fasi di registrazione e di missaggio che sono fondamentali, anche se registri un suono da un plugin.

Ci sono diverse vie per far respirare un Groove, dipende sempre dal risultato che vuoi ottenere.

DAX: Con una discografia che spazia tra numerosi alias come Nico Disco, Space Age e Future Jazz Ensemble, c’è un filo conduttore che unisce tutti questi progetti o ognuno rappresenta una stanza separata della tua creatività?

NASTYBOY: Per Nico Disco e Space Age ho voluto cambiare nome perché sono stati progetti estemporanei.

Invece, Future Jazz Ensemble è un progetto che al momento sta trovando poco spazio nonostante le mie intenzioni.

Ho un’idea ben precisa sulla direzione che vorrei fargli prendere e per realizzarla c’è bisogno di maggiore investimento di tempo, soprattutto a livello organizzativo dal momento che coinvolge diversi artisti.
