INTRODUZIONE:

Dax: Cominciamo dagli albori.

Another One Bites the Dust.

Nonna Corinna

Dax: Hai iniziato subito a suonare o hai fatto la classica gavetta?

Niccolò: Ho iniziato come PR.

Ci ho messo mesi a trovarlo tramite gli after-movie: era The Mole – Lockdown Party su Perlon.

Take Your Time Records Store

Niccolò: La prima etichetta, Follow the Groove, l’abbiamo aperta io e il mio socio.

1. The Mole – Lockdown Party
2. Kerri Chandler – Atmosphere
3. Glenn Underground – The Secret of CVO
4. Miguel Campbell – Something Special

Dax: Come nascono i tuoi pezzi?

Instore: Terrence Dixon – Detroit

Vedo troppa fretta in giro.

Dax: Forti emozioni! Ti capisco benissimo, davanti a una leggenda così, ci sta tutto!

UK:

Niccolò Turini interview * INTERVIEWS FAMILY HOUSE COLLECTIVE – DAX DJ

INTRODUCTION:

“Never believe anyone who loves house but doesn’t like disco.”

That was one of the first things Niccolò Turini told me… sooner or later I had to interview this extraordinary guy, with whom I share a lot of friends, DJs, producers, and devotion for vinyl.

Niccolò does not hide his bitterness regarding the state of the Italian scene. He analyzes critically the devaluation of the DJ figure, paid paltry sums compared to “usual foreign names”. It is a systemic critique of a world that ignores those who, like him or colleagues, invest every cent in culture and vinyl. His response to this decline is persistence.

Closing himself in the studio, producing “full throttle” and remaining faithful to a vision that accepts no discounts. In an era racing towards automation and instant success, Niccolò Turini reminds us that quality is a marathon, not a sprint. Are we still capable of taking the necessary time to discover what is authentic, or are we too busy chasing an algorithm that has already decided for us?

INTERVIEW:

Dax: Let’s start from the beginning. Talk to us about yourself: where does your obsession with music come from and what are the moments that marked your path so far?

Niccolò: I was born in Pisa in ’95, but music, honestly, I have always had inside. Think that at 6 years old I begged my parents for a drum kit; they never bought it for me and I still hold that against them! But the air at home was right: my grandfather was a classical music fanatic, my mother studied piano and my father worked as a speaker at Radio Pisa International.

In the car with him it was a continuous brainwashing: Beatles, Zucchero, Alan Parsons Project, Queen. But the real “trigger”, the one that made me understand the rhythm of the dancefloor, was Another One Bites The Dust. That bassline… there I said: “Okay, I don’t know what this is, but it’s exactly what I have visceral inside.”

Dax: And how did the transition happen from your dad’s radio to the clubs?

Niccolò: It was a gradual process. My sister later became a sound engineer, so the technical side has always remained in the family. The love at first sight for House arrived at the Stella Polare complex. They had fantastic afternoons. I was 12 years old, asking what music it was and they answered “Lounge” or “Chill”. Nobody said “House” or “Deep”.

So I started digging by myself: m2o, Mattei and Omich’s podcasts, then the nights with Stardust by Paolo Bolognesi or Diabolika. I was looking for “Chill out” on the internet and at a certain point the name Hot Creations appeared. There a world opened up: Lee Foss, Miguel Campbell, Nu Disco. My first vinyl was actually a De Marzo record on Hot Creations. I must have been 16 years old.

Dax: Did you start playing immediately or did you do the classic grind?

Niccolò: I started as PR. First at Acquacheta, then at Pappafico where I became resident. But I came from Disco: my dad passed me SOS Band, Delegation… heavy stuff. Today I still say always: “Never believe anyone who loves House but doesn’t like Disco.” At Pappafico I tried to slip in Nu Disco tracks, but they gave me bad looks, wouldn’t let me play them fully. My first console? Two CDJ 350 and a Behringer mixer. Then however I felt the need to go beyond, towards the “trend”, so I approached as PR at Tini Sound Garden.

At Tini I saw the giants, people like Loco Dice, they were my idols. But the day that reset my brain was the 12 hours of “Sven Väth in the Park” at Cecina (Livorno). At 4:30 PM, Sven plays a record. A track nobody understood, but for me it was the future. It took me months to find it via after-movies: it was The Mole – Lockdown Party on Perlon.

That record is still in my bag, even though it has a pressing defect on the B-side. It’s perfection: House? Deep? Minimal? Doesn’t matter. It’s pure music.

Dax: One thing that struck me is your very “pure” approach to the nightlife world…

Niccolò: Yes, I want to say this: I lived all of this sober. I have never touched synthetic substances in my whole life. When you work in the nightlife world, when you are 18 years old, you see everything. I respect everyone, but I wish that those who live it with double intensity because they are lucid were respected too, like me. For me professionalism comes from rigor and obsession, not from getting high.

Dax: Tell me about this adventure based on vinyl.

Niccolò: Vinyl is in my blood, even though at home we had only classical music. The first “serious” record I took was from Rush Hour in Amsterdam, a Move D on Workshop. But the shop was born from a different need. It’s not a generalist store: you won’t find Rock or New Wave. It is a place “for DJs and producers”. Period. Zero compromises. We go from instrumental Jazz to Free Jazz for those who sample Hip Hop, down to the most sought-after Deep House.

I owe a lot to my best friend Gunter, a very strong Hip Hop producer. He was the one who gifted me my first turntables (Pioneer PLX 1000s) to push me to start. If the store stands it’s because we put the passion of those who want to give others the right record at the right time.

Dax: And Berlin? I know it also marked your growth as a producer.

Niccolò: I moved to Berlin in 2019, at 24 years old. I wanted to find myself. I lived there, studied German and spent days in record shops. Amsterdam and Berlin gave me an incredible vision. Actual production however started with the pandemic in 2020. Before I hated producing because I never had a feel for machines; I love Synth, but drum machines were antipathetic to me. Then I did courses with Mass Prod and from there everything started.

Dax: You already have several important releases behind you, including Cabinet and 4Lux.

Niccolò: The first label, Follow the Groove, my partner and I opened it. We pressed Andrew Soul (a record that now travels for crazy sums on Discogs). Then I tried with Italian Weapons, wanted to form a group with only Italians, but managing producers is madness, I’m a moody type and demand a lot.

The turning point was meeting Daniel Paul (Slope/Cabinet) at Tresor. We started writing, he came to visit me in Pisa in my shop and while I played my track he asks: “Who’s this?”. “Mine”. He looks at me and says: “I’ll press this at 120%”. And it came out on Cabinet – 69. Then the release on 4Lux came, of which I am proud, although now I already feel the need to evolve, to hear new things.

Dax: How do you see the situation of clubs today? It often seems that local support is missing…

Niccolò: Look, I don’t express myself too much because otherwise “everything collapses”. In Italy there is a total devaluation of the DJ figure. Often we are paid a pittance compared to resident “veterans” or foreigners, even if you bring quality and do research. My fee I don’t lower below a certain threshold, because it’s my job and I put obsessive commitment into it. If they don’t call me, I stay home making records full throttle, until someone realizes it. The greatest satisfaction? Knowing that my records are played by others.

Dax: The 5 records that define you, those that never miss from your bag.

Niccolò: Difficult question, but I’ll try:

The Mole – Lockdown Party

Kerri Chandler – Atmosphere

Glenn Underground – The Secret of CVO

Miguel Campbell – Something Special

Maurizio – Domina (for my more techno/dub side)

Dax: How do your tracks come about?

Niccolò: I use only Ableton 10. I won’t upgrade it to version 12, I hate the idea that artificial intelligence makes music for me. I sample from vinyls and use samples I have on Ableton. No external instruments, except a parenthesis with a HydraSynth which I sold after four records. I am comfortable in my “dirty” digital flow mixed with samples from records.

I never think I will change! With version 10 I am God’s gift. I make the records there, see that they work, the workflow is the “standard”, a bit “grumpy” if you want, but effective. Why should I change the tactical setup if the team wins?

I have immense respect for machines and for those who have the studio full of hardware, but my world is “in the box”. The focus on making the record sound good, that’s it.

I also want to mention those who truly influenced me in this path. People like Daniel Paul, Nicola Lo Porchio or Lorenzo Fortino, George K, Marcello Napoletano, whom I respect very much. And then Samuele Pagliai, Dana Ruh – a person with heart – and Terrence Dixon, who at this moment is giving me so much on a human level. If I have to dream of a place to play? The Globus, above Tresor. Sooner or later it will happen.

Dax: What are your plans for the future and what message do you feel like sending to younger DJs, those who come to you to buy music?

Niccolò: Look, I’ll tell you what Dana Ruh told me: fix medium-term goals on production, but never force it. Put yourself in the studio only when you have a real push. If you push too hard, the “nice record” doesn’t come out. Technique is trained and for that there is always mastering which helps you, but the idea must be genuine.

The name of my store, Take Your Time, isn’t accidental. It’s a Pete Rock track, but it’s also advice. I see too much hurry around. I am thirty years old and to the young I say: “Selection is done by yourself. Nobody ever put a record in my hand saying ‘play this’. You have to take responsibility of searching, of making mistakes, losing hours on it.”

Those who come to me must understand that you cannot find the record of a lifetime in 15 minutes. Need minimum two or three hours of listening. Take the necessary time to truly discover music. A hub: despite being located in a provincial reality, the store aims to give resonance to enthusiasts and create high-level connections. Over time, Take Your Time has hosted significant figures of the international electronic scene like Lucretio, Dan Più, Dan Curtin and Dana Ruh, becoming a meeting point between local and global scenes.

Dax: Before we say goodbye, do you have a strange anecdote, something happened in clubs or in Berlin that left you speechless?

Niccolò: Look, certain things just can’t be told, especially if the “inflated” (hype) person is involved or tough situations… let’s leave them as taboos! But one “clean” thing I will tell you: I met my idol, Kerri Chandler. A record signed and… I had a total panic attack! I had to run away.

Dax: Strong emotions! I understand you perfectly, in front of such a legend, it makes sense!
