I’ve changed the site around to focus more on user contributions.  The biggest change is the integration over third-party software into the site, like UserVoice (the suggestions tool) and Tender (the knowledge base and support discussion tools).  Also, I had to remove all previous suggestions, so if you made one before, please suggest it again.

Suggestions

No More Family Connections Hosting

Recently I’ve decided to move away from offering Family Connections hosting and instead focus on developing and growing the product itself.  I’m doing this because I no longer want to mess with customers, billing etc. that goes into hosting, it’s too much work for very little payoff.

So as of today, I will no longer offer hosting.  Current customers can continue to use the hosting as long as they wish, but no new customers will be accepted.

What’s New in 3.0?

This release fixed a few bugs and added some features to the Photo Gallery.

Photo Gallery

  • Users can now upload photos from Instagram.
  • Updated latest categories view
  • Updated the upload photos screen to allow for multiple upload destinations.
  • Users can now comment on categories as well as individual photos.

Bugs

  • Fixed a bug in some version MySQL that complained about a mix of illegal collations
  • Fixed links to birthday events on calendar
  • Fixed family news imports
  • Fixed Administration Configuration settings
  • Fixed auto-complete scroll issue

Status Updates

  • New Status updates now send email notifications, if turned on

What’s New in 2.9.2?

This release was to fix a vulnerability in the install.php file that would allow users to run arbitrary commands on the server.

Everyone should immediately upgrade to 2.9.2.

It is recommended that you immediately remove the install.php file from you site.  This will prevent any further issues. 

Also, a fix for this issue will be released soon in Version 2.9.2.  You won’t really need to upgrade, this will mainly be for new installs.

Again, please delete the install.php file from your site.

What’s New in 2.9?

A little behind schedule, but version 2.9 is finally finished.  This release has a bunch of behind the scenes code enhancements, as well as some new stuff.

Administration

  • Created a brand new admin section, and new admin dashboard.

Calendar

  • You can now change what day of the week the calendar starts on.
  • Deceased family member’s birthdays no longer show up.
  • Fixed issue with printing calendar.

Family Tree

  • You can now add photos to family members in the family tree.
  • Fixed a bug when adding father of spouse.

General

  • Profile page redesigned
  • Awards page redesigned.
  • “Optional Sections” will now be referred to as “Plugins”
  • New notification page created, to notify users when they have been tagged in a photo.

Code Quality

  • Re-organized the file structure.
  • Better input filtering.

There is a security vulnerability in some versions of Family Connections on some configurations of PHP, that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary commands.

How to Fix

To protect yoursite from an attack simply remove the dev/ directory from your site.

This directory is not needed for Family Connections to work and is only useful to developers who want to make major changes.  Future versions of Family Connections will be available in two forms, one for development and one for production.  The production version will no longer contain the dev/ directory.

Technical Details

The bug exists in the dev/less.php file in all versions since 2.5.  This file is used to help with converting LESS files into CSS files.  You can find out more about this vulnerability by visiting ticket #406.
