Since its Dad's day, I felt encouraged to write about a special dad and son and what it means to encourage and share good times.

I'm a retired university professor who has turned to poetry in his retirement to preserve his wife's sanity. She maintains that having me around 24 hours a day is as bit of astretch. Preposterous!!

A voyage abroad with my good wife Maude turned into a real mess
In need of some rest in Budapest, about all I got was stress
Then in France I took a chance on some pork a little too rare
I so regret that Monsieur's toilette was very crowded there

I wrote this poem for my wife. Together, we have shared a magnificent 42 year love affair, world travel, and 14 healthy and otherwise terrific grandchildren. I hope you enjoy my poem and will consider it in your contest and for publication.

This poem is a heartfelt tribute to parents who sacrifice their entire lives for the happiness and future of their children. Usually, the sky is seen as something above us, representing dreams and greatness. But in this poem, the parents are portrayed as even greater than the sky because they become the support system that allows their children to rise high in life.

Before I ever learned to dream,
My parents were already dreaming for me.
I've struggled with my mental health for several years and have experienced periods of both overwhelming highs and crushing lows. Writing has become a way for me to express feelings that can be difficult to explain out loud. This poem was written to capture what those emotional swings feel like from the inside, and to remind myself that even during the darkest moments, there is still a part of me that wants to keep going.

            I rise like lightning --
skin humming, heartbeat running ahead of me,
thoughts a river that forgot how to rest.
The world glows gold and I glow with it,

I was diagnosed with cancer last November, I had surgery and radiotherapy for weeks after. Whilst having my treatment, my husband was taken ill with stomach problems, he was subsequently admitted to hospital where they operated on him, that's when they found out that he also had cancer. I was lucky as I recovered and am now in remission. my husband was told his was inoperable and they gave him three months to live. we had been together for forty years. I am now trying to get my life together.

It was seven lonely months ago
that you said your last goodbye,
the angels took you in their arms
and I was left alone to cry.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could have all the blessings we wished for? Here are a few blessings that would make life a little more pleasant and peaceful.

May our challenges be triumphs
Our accomplishments are huge
Our strengths are many, our fears are few.
Have peace and contentment that can't be destroyed,

After an operation, what was supposed to be two weeks of extreme pain has stretched into seven, and it still remains. I feel pressured to be healed, to be back to normal but I'm not. Somewhere, I lost who I used to be. The pain pulled me into a deep depression, changing me in ways I never expected. Every day is a fight to find myself again. My husband, "Sir," carried me through it, steady and strong but in the middle of it, I began to disappear, and at times, he did too.

I wrote this for someone in my life who experienced something way too common in our lives. As it would be I know it applies to many. My only hope is that it brings hope to the many. She remained confident in not letting it consume her. She was determined. She is a survivor.

This poem highlights the hidden pain of abuse and harassment faced by both girls and boys today. Girls stay alert to danger, while boys are told to "be strong" and hide their wounds. Through vivid imagery and contrasting perspectives, it shows that suffering has no gender. For me, it's personal--it reflects real stories and fears. The poem is a call to speak, to see, and to act so every young person can live with safety, dignity, and hope.
