It is so adorable how toddlers can’t seem to make up a lie, simply because they are not even familiar with the concept!

One adorable tot was confronted by her dad, when he found out that the batch of cupcakes has been violated in the kitchen and the perpetrator is yet to be found.

Cupcakes? There are cupcakes missing?

When dad asks her if she knows that there have been several cupcake thefts in their kitchen recently, the toddler doesn’t even bat an eyelash and admits that it has been her all along!

Dad is in shock and tells her that now she has to go to jail for her crimes.

Stealing is a serious felony and it cannot go unpunished, no matter how cute the felon might be.

And we are not in pursuit…

When the notion of incarceration reaches her tiny toddler brain cells, she darts for the other room and Officer Dad starts chasing the criminal, barely missing her with every circle!

How is she so fast?

Must be the sugar from the cupcake.

Dad gets completely immersed in his role as a police officer, using codes and calling for backup, which throws the felony suspect into a laughing fit that will squeeze a smile out even from a rock!

Hands On Science Water Absorption Experiment

Water Absorption Experiment for Kids

We have had a lot of drink spills at our house. That means that each of us scrambles for something to clean up the liquid that is flowing off the kitchen table and cascading to the floor.

Definition of Absorption

Water absorption is defined as the amount of water absorbed by a material and is calculated as the ratio of the weight of water absorbed to the weight of the dry material.

What that Means to Us

Every day we deal with situations where water absorption is involved, but we may not even be aware. When you dry off after a bath, a more absorbent towel will make that easier. If you watch a paper towel commercial on TV or online, you will see the tests they show to prove their product works better. If you have a baby in the house, diaper absorption is a the difference between sleeping through the night or not!

Absorption in the Real World

My husband tends to run for the paper towels, my son reaches for the napkins that are kept on a shelf at his eye level, and I race for a dish towel. With all of us trying to clean up the spill it seems to take no time at all, but lately I have been wondering what spill removing item really absorbs the most water.

These are the items we tested…what will you test for water absorption?

Let’s Test Water Absorption

You could do this as a casual kitchen table science experiment like we did or grab our printable scientific method for kids worksheet and go through these steps with more a more formal set of questions.

My son and I gathered a wide variety of spill removing items from around the house. I then I tried to cut them into similar sizes.

Suggested Supplies

paper towel
napkin
sock
foam backed letter
dish towel
sponge

Directions

Step 1

We then put a cup of water into the large section of one of my son’s bento lunch containers. The container was called the “Water Absorbing Test Area” for this experiment.

The dry testing materials were put in the left hand side of the container and the wet ones were placed in the right hand side once they had been used.

Keep the dry items dry until you are ready to test them!

Step 2

My son placed each material into the water and then the testing material was squeezed out over a silicone muffin cup.

Science Experiment Tip: We learned that you have to hold the material up over the cup rather than put the item in the cup while squeezing it. We ended up with water everywhere and had to redo the test with that material once it had dried.

We will compare how much each item absorbed.

Step 3

After emptying the water the material contained into the cup, I moved the cup unto a paper labeled with the names of each of the materials.

When we had tested out each materials, I had him look at the amount of water in each cup.

Science Experiment Tip: You could use a measuring cup if you wanted a more specific measurement with older kids.

In the end, record what happened and which item was able to absorb the most water.

Step 4

We then discussed why some items like the sponge did a great job and the foam letter absorbed very little water.

My son decided that it had to due with the size of holes each object has. I think that was a very wise insight.

Bleach Pregnancy Test – Procedure, Results & Risks

Every woman has an intuition before confirming the pregnancy with the doctor. Certain symptoms, including missed periods, sore breasts, and tiredness, hint at the possibility of pregnancy.

The most common method to confirm pregnancy at home is the pregnancy kit available at the stores. But, do you know you can also confirm the pregnancy using other methods and procedures? Yes. The bleach pregnancy test is one such method where you can check for pregnancy at home. Let’s look more into the process and how does it work.

Bleaching Powder Pregnancy Test: What does it Mean?

As the same suggests, we use bleaching powder to determine if you are pregnant or not. During pregnancy, the body produces a pregnancy hormone called Human Chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). In the bleaching powder pregnancy test, one needs to mix the bleach and urine. The bleach will react to the HCG to determine if you are pregnant or not.

What Happens During this Test?

In this bleach pregnancy test, the bleach reacts with the HCG hormone in the urine. The results are assumed to be positive if the reaction makes the mixture foam up. If there is no foam formation but just bubbles in the urine, the pregnancy result is negative.

Which Bleach is Used for Bleaching Powder Pregnancy Test?

It is always recommended to use regular bleach without ammonia or coloring agents. This is because the inclusion of ammonia and coloring agents might affect the reaction of the bleach with the urine.

How is the Bleaching Powder Pregnancy Test Performed?

As said earlier, you need to mix the urine and bleach and allow it to react. So the step by step procedure would be as follows:

Take a cup and label it as A. Collect a fresh sample of your urine. The early morning urine tends to contain high levels of HCG. This method requires too much urine for a pregnancy test.
Now, take another cup and label it as B. Next, fill a quarter of the cup with bleach.
Transfer the bleach from B slowly to A.
Complete the procedure and wait for the time when the bleach ends its reaction.

Does No Reaction Mean No Pregnancy?

Generally, if there is no reaction, it means you are not pregnant. However, there might be other circumstances as well where there might be no reaction:

The bleach you have used might contain ammonia or coloring agents.
There are chances that you might be pregnant, but the hormones have not produced enough to react with the bleach.
Your urine might not be fresh. It may have been diluted.

As discussed, the bleach pregnancy test results could be either positive or negative. But how accurate is the bleach pregnancy test depends on several factors, including the quality of the bleach, fresh sample of urine, gradual mixing of the bleach, and clean container. Therefore, there are high chances that you might get a false positive on a bleach pregnancy test and vice-versa.

Bleach and Urine Pregnancy Test: Are they Accurate?

The answer would be straightforward – not accurate. No studies or evidence are proving it to be accurate. Further, no medical organizations recommend the bleach pregnancy test.

Firstly, bleach is a chemical and is not produced for determining pregnancy hormones. Secondly, no chemical research proves that when urine is mixed with bleach, it won’t result in a foamy reaction. What if it is just a natural reaction and has nothing to do with the pregnancy hormones?

To be more precise, there are more chances of getting a false result. So, there is no reliability on the final result, either positive or negative.

Side Effects of Bleach Pregnancy Test at Home?

The most important fact to keep in mind is, bleach is a chemical. Imagine what happens when you pee in bleach. When it reacts with urine, which contains ammonia, it might result in chlorine gas. Chlorine gas is hazardous, especially for pregnant women. Further, the use of bleach for pregnancy and the pregnant woman has not yet been tested. So, if you feel any of the following symptoms while taking up the bleach pregnancy test at home, please get away from the place:

Irritation in the eyes, nose, and throat
Cough
Shortness of breath
Nausea
Chest pain

Above all, the most significant risk in a bleach pregnancy test is the risk of a false result. There are chances of getting both false-negative and false positive.

The false-negative could delay the prenatal care to be taken. A false positive can actually take a toll on your emotional stability and can cause distress.

Does Health Supplement Affect the Test Result?

The health supplements that contain HCG are banned in the market. So, taking health supplements cannot result in a false result. However, if you are under fertility medications and treatments, there might be a false result because fertility treatments and medicines increase the HCG levels.

The bleaching powder test is just another easy homemade pregnancy test with bleach, which helps you find out if you are pregnant. It is highly preferred by many because of its cost-effectiveness and easy procedure. But, this method is not proved to be accurate. It is also a risky job to deal with chemicals, especially when expecting a positive pregnancy. Therefore, if you think you might be pregnant, you can look out for more accurate alternatives or head to the doctor right away and start your prenatal care. There is no need to risk your health when you are pregnant.

How to Make Glow in the Dark Slime

Let’s make slime that glows in the dark!

Glow in the dark slime is such a fun project to make with kids. We’ve made glowing slime before, but this recipe is completely different. You’ve probably already got the ingredients to make one of our recipes.

Slime that is glowing

This slime recipe is perfect for kids of all ages (little ones under supervision, of course). You only need five ingredients, most of which you probably already have at home.

How to make glow-in-the-dark slime

There are lots of different methods to making this fun craft with kids. You can buy glow paint in different colors at the craft store. You should try these to see how each of the colors glow. Maybe blend the different colors together after the slime has been made for really cool effects.

Supplies to make glow-in-the-dark slime at home.

Supplies needed to make glow-in-the dark slime

1/4 cup water
2 oz glow acrylic paint (1 small bottle)
1/4 cup corn syrup (we used light corn syrup)
1/4 cup white school glue
1 tsp Borax powder

Instructions for homemade glow-in-the-dark slime

Mix ingredients to make glowing slime in a bowl.

Step 1

Add all of the ingredients in a bowl.

Tip: Use paint that is non-toxic when making projects with kids.

While wearing gloves, mix all of the ingredients together until slime begins to form. It will feel a little rubbery but will stretch easily.

Tip: We found that there was a little excess liquid in the bowl once our slime was mixed together. If there is you can just toss that away.

Leave your slime on a paper plate or in a container under natural or artificial lights. This will help to activate the glow paint. The longer it’s under the light, the better it will glow.

Jun 28, Video games and attention skills: An evidence-based guide for parents

What's the connection between video games and attention? Do video games cause attention problems? Or do they help children focus? It seems that both are true.

Certain "action" video games can enhance a variety of visual attention skills, and they may even help children with reading disabilities. But there's a downside. Action gaming may also hinder "proactive control," a kind of attention that is patient, careful, and sustained.

Here are the details.

Unpacking the concept of attention

What do we mean when we say someone is "paying attention?" What do we mean when we say someone has "good visual attention skills"?

Attention is about focusing your mental resources on something, and avoiding distractions. But that's a pretty vague description, isn't it? If we unpack the concept of attention, we find that it includes a number of distinct abilities.

For instance, imagine you are a lifeguard, standing on a tower overlooking a crowded shore. You see lots of people in the water, but it's your job to look out for other things too. And then you see it -- the dorsal fin of a shark.

It disappears in less than a second, but you were able to spot it and note its location. If I ask you to point to the area where that dorsal fin appeared, you are pretty accurate.

That's one kind of attention skill -- being quick to notice and locate select objects that appear briefly in your field of view. Here are a couple more:

You are visiting a busy amusement park with several children. Suddenly they dash off, each child moving in a different direction. It's hard to distinguish them in the crowd, but you manage to keep sight of them. Psychologists call this "multiple object tracking."

You're back on the beach, a lifeguard scanning the water for sharks and swimmers in trouble. But you have to keep an eye on the land, too, because beachgoers sometimes engage in dangerous or illegal behavior. When needed, you can quickly snap your focus from one thing to the next. This skill is related to what psychologists call "attention switching" or "task switching."

How do these abilities relate to video games?

All three concern visual attention, and video games are a visual medium. But clearly, there's more to it. In many video games, these are crucial skills for success.

Players are required to monitor a field of view that is crowded with distractors, and quickly locate special targets when they suddenly appear.

Players must try to keep track of multiple objects simultaneously.

Players need to be capable of rapid shifts of focus -- switching their attention from one urgent task to the next.

This is especially true for "shooter" video games -- action games where the goal is for the player to defeat enemies with long-range weapons.

So perhaps it shouldn't surprise us: People who play "shooter" action video games tend to have superior attention skills relating to field of view, multiple object tracking, and task-switching.

It's been documented in adults (e.g., Bavelier and Greene 2019; Bediou et al 2018; Qiu et al 2018; Wu and Spence, 2013). It's been documented in children too.

For example, back in 2010, Mathew Dye and Daphne Bavelier recruited 114 school kids between the ages of 7 and 17.

Among these children, approximately one-third had prior experience playing "shooter" video games. The remaining two thirds lacked this experience. And it made a difference.

The kids who had a history of playing "shooter" video games were better at noticing and locating objects in their field of view. They also showed an enhanced ability to pay attention to multiple objects simultaneously.

Of course, these are merely correlations. We can't assume from such studies that playing video games causes improvements in visual attention.

But researchers have also performed controlled experiments.

They've recruited volunteers without gaming experience, and then randomly assigned them to play either "shooter" video games or "non-shooter" video games. The outcomes?

Across a variety of studies, people assigned to play fast-paced "shooter" video games have improved their performance on "field of view" tasks.

They've also improved their ability to track multiple objects, and to rapidly shift attention between tasks (Bediou et al 2018; Bavelier and Green 2019; West et al 2020; Vedechkina and Borgonovi 2021).

So the consensus among researchers is that we can enhance certain visual attention skills by playing action video games (Bediou et al 2018).

Can video games boost attention in ways that benefit children academically?

One fascinating possibility is that gaming might help children improve their reading skills.

In particular, studies suggest that children with dyslexia might learn to read faster.

If this sounds far-fetched, consider that people with dyslexia tend to have a hard time switching their attention from visual to auditory stimuli. This makes the standard approach to reading -- seeing a letter and imagining the sound it makes -- very difficult.

As we've noted, action video games appear to boost players' attention-switching or task-switching skills. So perhaps gaming could benefit children with dyslexia (Harrar et al 2014).

Where's the evidence?

Much of it comes from the work of Sandro Franceschini and his colleagues. They have used commercially-available, age-appropriate action games (mini games from the E-rated title, "Rayman's Raving Rabbids") to see if action gaming can improve reading speed in dyslexic kids.

In one study, they recruited 20 Italian children (10 year olds) with dyslexia. They tested the kids' attention skills and reading abilities, and then they asked the children to play video games in daily sessions for two weeks.

Half the kids were randomly assigned to play only "action" games -- games that include "shooter" mechanics (e.g., shooting carrot juice at cartoon rabbits), and a variety of unpredictable, fast-moving objects in the player's field of view.

The other half were randomly assigned to play only games that lacked these features.

After video game training, the researchers re-tested the children's attention skills and reading abilities.

Were there any changes? Yes. And it was the kids who played action video games who showed the biggest improvements.

Not only did they perform better on attention tests. They also improved their reading speed -- without any loss of reading comprehension.

In fact, their gains in reading exceeded the amount of spontaneous, developmental improvement that kids ordinarily make over the course of a year (Franceschini et al 2013).

It was a single, small study, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions. In fact, when researchers in a different lab performed a similar experiment in Polish-speaking children, they failed to replicate the effect (Łuniewska et al 2018).

However, in subsequent studies, Franceschini and his colleagues have reported more such successes, in both Italian-speaking children and English-speaking children (Franceschini et al 2017; Franceschini and Bertoni 2019; Bertoni et al 2021).

And these experiments offer hints as to why some kids might fail to benefit from playing action video games: Research suggests that it's essential that kids develop video game expertise.

In two studies, only kids who became proficient at action video games went on to show reading improvements (Franceschini and Bertoni 2019; Bertoni et al 2021).

Moreover, there are indications that a child's age matters. If you start playing video games at an earlier age, you may be more likely to develop enhanced task-switching skills.

In a study of 134 university students living in Singapore, researchers compared three groups:

students who had begun playing video games before the age of 12
students who had begun playing video games after the age of 12; and
students who had never played video games.

All three groups came from similar socioeconomic backgrounds. They scored similarly on a test of cognitive ability. But what about task-switching?

The researchers tested the participants' task-switching abilities, and they found that the "early start" group had the best task-switching abilities -- better than both the "late start" video gamers and the folks who had never played video games at all.

By contrast, the "late start" group didn't display any advantage over non-gamers. Their task-switching skills were not significantly different (Hartono et al 2016).

In summary, there is convincing evidence that action video games can benefit certain attention skills.

In addition, it's possible that action video games could help kids with dyslexia, but this research is mixed, and the details are still emerging.

What about the downside? Is there any evidence that video games can cause attention problems?

Laboratory studies suggest that action video gaming might worsen the type of attention that is careful and sustained.

We've talked about several aspects of attention so far -- locating objects in your field of view, tracking multiple objects, and task-switching. But there are other ways to measure attention.

Imagine, for example, these scenarios.

You are driving on a road when a deer darts out in front of you. You immediately react, and avoid a collision.
You are driving on a similar road, but this time you're given a heads-up. You see a sign warning you that animal crossings are common. As a result, you become more vigilant, and when a deer suddenly dashes into view, you react even faster than usual.

In both scenarios, you are paying attention. But in the first example, you aren't engaging special attention resources until after the animal appears. Psychologists call this "reactive control."

By contrast, in the second example you've "turned on" special attention resources in anticipation of something happening. You receive information about what to expect, and you use this information to actively guide your future responses.

It's what psychologists call "proactive cognitive control," and it's particularly relevant to our everyday definition of "good attention skills." You read clues, and use them to become more careful. You remain watchful for specific events, even if nothing terribly exciting is happening right now.

So how does action video game playing impact "proactive cognitive control"? It appears to have a negative effect.

To see what I mean, consider a recent experiment conducted by Robert West and his colleagues on college students living in Iowa.

West's team recruited 77 students, none of whom played video games excessively. (To participate in this study, you couldn't be in the habit of playing video games more than 5 hours per week.)

The researchers began by measuring the students' baseline attention skills. Students performed a "field of view" task. They also took tests that measured their reactive and proactive control.

Then came the treatment phase. Each student was randomly assigned to one of four different groups:

The action video game group, in which students played a fast-paced, first-person shooter game called "Unreal Tournament";

The real-time strategy video game group, in which students played a game ("Faster Than Light") that lacks the rapid pace and first person shooter mechanics of "Unreal Tournament";

The simulation video game group, in which students played a non-action video game, "The Sims"; and

The no-gaming control group, in which students played no video games.

Students assigned to the video game groups (action, strategy, or simulation) participated in 10 gaming sessions over the next few weeks, racking up about 9 hours total game time.

Students assigned to the non-gaming group went about their lives as normal, with no scheduled gaming sessions.

When the treatment phase was complete, researchers re-tested the students. What happened?

None of the gaming groups experienced improvements in reactive control. But on the other measures, kids who had played the action game stood out.

Consistent with previous studies, the action gamers came away with the biggest improvements on the field-of-view task.

But they were also the only group to experience a decrease proactive cognitive control. Nine hours of action gaming seems to have made their proactive control skills worse (West et al 2020).

Is there any other research to back this up?

Yes. For example, back in 2010, Kira Bailey and her colleagues compared the behavior and brain activity of two different groups of young men:

a group that was in the habit of playing video games more than 40 hours per week, and
a group that played video games less than 2 hours per week.

There was no experimental manipulation in this case. Bailey's team simply wanted to know if people's pre-existing video game habits were correlated with differences in attention.

So they asked the young men to perform tasks that tapped both reactive control and proactive control. At the same time, they measured the men's brain activity by recording brain ERPs, or event-related potentials.

What did they find? The two groups performed similarly on tasks requiring reactive control. Their brain activity looked the same too.

But when it came to proactive control, there was a distinct difference.

The "high volume" (40+ hours per week) gamers were outperformed by "low volume" gamers, and their brain activity showed less evidence of paying attention during the brief, "wait and see" intervals of the tests (Bailey et al 2010).

So are gamers at greater risk of having problems with patient, sustained attention? The kind of attention that's important in the classroom?

Maybe.

In laboratory tests of sustained attention, adolescents who play action video games tend to perform worse (Trisolini et al 2018; Petillit et al 2020). They were good at the instantaneous, reactive control stuff -- avoiding a collision when the deer darts out onto the road. They weren't so good at tasks that require sustained vigilance.

Moreover, there is evidence that time spent playing video games is linked with attention problems at school.

Edward Swing and his colleagues tracked more than 1300 American children for about 13 months (Swing et al 2010).

They asked the kids, in grades 3-5, to keep track of how much time they spent playing video games. These tallies were cross-checked against their parents’ reports.

The researchers also asked teachers to evaluate each child’s attention skills at 4 different time points during the 13-month study.

When Swing's team analyzed the results, they found a weak, but statistically significant, link between video games and teacher-reported attention problems. And the pattern was consistent with the idea that playing video games causes attention problems.

Why? Because kids who played more at the beginning of the study experienced increased attention problems at the end. This was true even after controlling for prior student attention problems. Teachers said the kids got worse over time.

What's the takeaway?

The takeaway is that attention isn't any one thing. It's a set of abilities, and it's possible to be better at some of these abilities and worse at others.

As I write this in 2021, we have pretty convincing evidence -- experimental evidence -- that you can improve certain visual attention skills by playing action video games.

As I note elsewhere, it also appears that video game training can help you develop certain spatial skills.

And it all makes sense.

These games reward players who can quickly detect movement in their field of view; who can track multiple, fast-moving objects; who can rapidly switch attention between different tasks.

Playing these games provides practice, and people learn from practice. If we ask trainees to perform tasks that are similar to those they've mastered in a video game, they will likely be able to transfer their skills to the non-gaming context.

But of course not every aspect of life resembles an action video game. There are very important attention skills that have little to do with tracking fast-moving objects. They depend instead on remaining focused during times of relative quiet or calm. And this, perhaps, is where action video games can hinder our performance.

How serious are the negative effects of video games on attention? That's an important question, and I don't think we have enough information to answer it.

In the study led by Edward Swing, the correlation between video games and attention problems was quite modest. But in that study, the researchers didn't drill down -- they didn't find out what kinds of video games children were actually playing. So the analysis is lumping together a wide range of games -- including educational games, strategy games, simulation games -- that may have had very different effects.

The experiment by Robert West's team is more targeted, but it doesn't tell us how game-induced detriments in proactive control might affect a child's performance in the classroom.

So we really do need more research to sort this out. Meanwhile, we can take a level-headed, nuanced approach to action video games.

It's not hype to say that action gaming can improve visual attention skills, and these skills have value in the real world.

But this doesn't mean that action video games have only beneficial effects, or that action gaming is a good therapy for improving sustained attention in the classroom. As with most things in life, action gaming comes with a downside. We need to be aware of that there are both costs and benefits.

What I Want My Little Sister to Know As She Leaves For College

Dear Caroline,
Even though I’m about to be a junior at Baylor University, it feels just like yesterday that I was saying goodbye to you, Elizabeth, Mom and Dad when you dropped me off freshman year. You are so close to having the University of Texas be your new home. Since I am the oldest, all I knew about college was what Mom and Dad had told me. No offense to them, but it has been a long time since they were in college. I mean a long time (sorry, guys).

Brother has grown-up advice for his little sister about college. (Julie Wiesen)

I want to share with you some of the things that I have learned over my two years in college that I think will help you as you take off into a brand new world. I wish I had been given a list of tips before I had left, so maybe this will help.

College advice from a brother to his little sister

Drop-Off:

You will be full of so many different emotions the day that you move into your dorm. You are excited to be at college and all of the new people you are going to meet, yet at the same time you are about to say goodbye to your family. It’s a hard day, there’s no way around it.

While Mom and Dad are setting up your room, everything is hectic. You don’t have time to stop and think about it. But when they are close to being finished, you slowly realize that they are going to be leaving soon, and that’s when everything hits.

Two years ago…
You remember it being hard saying goodbye when you dropped me off, don’t you? Well, it will be even harder when YOU are the one saying goodbye to them. But it doesn’t have to be hard for long.

The one thing I would tell you not to do is sit in your room and think about everything. Go meet some of the people on your hall and do something fun, or really anything, to keep your mind occupied. I remember a bunch of guys on my hall (whom now, two years later, I consider some of my closest friends) and I went and played basketball.

Go to class.

I know that this may sound like a pointless piece of advice, given the fact you had no choice about going to class in high school. But believe me, it becomes way more appealing to just simply not go to class when you are tired or for whatever reason. I am not saying to never skip class. Just know that what is said in class will be on the test.

To reiterate this point, I have an example. On a Monday after a three-day weekend in one of my accounting classes, literally 25% of the class showed up. My professor decided to give each student who showed up that day extra bonus points on the upcoming test. Those points took my test grade from a B+ to an A. Had I not been there I would not have gotten those points.

Be yourself and choose your friends wisely.

I am not kidding when I say you are about to meet people you will be friends with for the rest of your life. Since that’s the case, choose your friends wisely. If you can’t be yourself around certain people whom you think you want to be friends with, you need to find new friends. If you ignore everything else in this letter, please listen to this part. Do not fall into this trap. Just simply be you.

Call home.

Especially Mom, since she’s probably the one most worried. Try to call home often because they want to hear how everything is going and it is nice to talk to them. Nobody is going to make you keep up your relationship with your family. That is your responsibility. I would love to call mom as I would walk to class in the mornings and see how things were going at home. Face Time is also fantastic because you get to see your favorite pup, Scooter. Oh, and text Elizabeth to check on her. She won’t have you around to entertain her anymore.

Know what you believe and why you believe it.

This refers mainly to your faith (dig into your Bible for truth and check out 1 Peter 3:15). Your faith can grow or shrink in college. While you will be surrounded by lots of intelligent people, don’t take everything that they profess as absolute truth. For example, I had to write a paper where I had to defend one of my beliefs and it was good for me because I had to actually put pen to paper on what I believed and why.

Freshman year grades are very important.

Freshman year of college is going to most likely be your easiest year academically speaking. That being said, make good grades your first year. Don’t dig yourself into a hole. Starting off strong makes everything a whole lot easier.

Don’t start to study for a test the night before. This might have worked in high school, but it does not work in college. Trust me, I have tried this and it ended poorly. Also, group study sessions are great social events, but not always the best study events.

Visit churches and find one that you like.

Once you find one, get plugged into a small group and try not to skip on the weekends. Even when you are tired, it is a great place to get poured into…especially after a long week of class.

Journal.

I don’t mean write down your feelings everyday, yet you can do that if you like. What I mean is to make a continual list of things that you have learned and that you are continually learning. Write down things that are important to you. Once in a while, describe an “average” day in great detail. It is cool to look back and read that a couple of years later to see how far you have come.

Be spontaneous.

Some of your greatest memories are going to come from doing spontaneous things with friends. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. College is a balance between friends, school, and everything in between.

I’ll admit that college takes some getting used to. If you hate it the first few days, don’t worry. Trust me, you will get the hang of it and you will love it. But keep in mind that it’s not going to be a cakewalk.

The level of responsibility on you has been kicked into high gear. You will be responsible for getting to class on time, doing your laundry, feeding yourself, etc. Nobody will be there to hold your hand, but you can do it.

If you ever get overwhelmed, stop and take a deep breath. Remember that you have a brother who is only an hour and a half away in Waco. You can always come see me no matter what time of day, and you will always have a place to stay. That being said… HOOK’EM HORNS!

24 Things Middle and High School Students Can Do to Keep Busy This Summer

The times have found you. That’s what they say to generations faced with difficult times. I know you didn’t ask for this honor.

For what it’s worth, I’m sorry you have had to shoulder the burden of living through a pandemic. I wish you didn’t have to spend last year taking classes online, far from your friends and your independence. But now that the year is over, and things are opening back up, here are 24 ideas for things you can do this summer.

Here are things that teens can do this summer. (Twenty20 @kayp)

And when I say do something, what I really mean is, do anything. Seriously. Get out of bed (preferably before 11 AM). Get yourself some breakfast (you really don’t need me to do that anymore). And fill your day with small increments of activity. Create a schedule—or at least a list, of what you want to fill your day with. (Helpful tip for list-making: Write down something you’ve done already, so you can cross it off.)

What’s that? I can hear you mumbling there’s nothing to do. Hogwash, I say. There is always something to do.

24 summer activities for teens

Learn something by heart. A poem, a song, the Declaration of Independence.
Make something with your hands: knit a scarf, build a bench, create a rock garden. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Or pretty.
Read The Diary of Anne Frank. It will give you some needed perspective. And when you are finished with that, just read. Every day.
Find something broken and fix it.
Make good use of your screen time (and get a newfound appreciation for all of your precious devices) by learning a thing or two about STEM. iD Tech has virtual tech camps on everything from Python to Roblox to Minecraft. 9. Clean your room. Get rid of the stuff you don’t use anymore. There is plenty of it.

10. Help me in the kitchen and let’s cook something new every week. Look through cookbooks or go online to find a recipe you want to make. I’m game.

11. Grab a sibling or friend and play catch, or bounce a tennis ball off a wall. See how long you can dribble a basketball.

12. Tour a museum in person or online. You can make the trip without me and in a virtual sense the world is your oyster. You can start at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and end up in an Egyptian tomb.

13. Design a new board game, write a screenplay, produce a video.

14. Write a poem, a story, a letter to a friend. Write one haiku a day. It’s only 17 syllables. You can do it.

15. Find something you are curious about and learn about it. It could be a language. Or, history. Or, Mars. Just pick. One. Thing.

16. Wash the dishes that you put in the sink.

17. Leave your phone in another room and be bored for 30 minutes. Stare out the window. Look up at the sky. Just be.

18. Design a trivia quiz with a new theme every week. Professional sports, the French Revolution, weird pets. Share it with friends and family. Here’s one to get you started.

19. Have a contest to see who can find the most interesting podcast. Can’t find one you like? Then come up with your own.

20. Do something nice for somebody else. Kindness is just as contagious as the corona virus.

21. Enjoy the Summer Olympics with me. We had to wait a whole year for live sports to come back and this extra special event only comes once every four years.

22. Watch a silent movie, or an old one, just something that is not typically “recommended for you” by Netflix.

23. Figure out the answer to one thing you’ve always wanted to know.

24. Find out something about a relative you never knew. Try this out on your friends, too. Get and stay curious.

Think about it. When you think about the Global Pandemic of 2020-21, don’t you want to have something interesting to say about how you emerged from it?

With school back in, there are a lot of things we parents are having to deal with again.

School lunches, uniforms, meetings with teachers, and hours of after school homework are among the top time-sucks of parents at the beginning of each school year.

What would happen if a mom followed through on the threat to wake kid with an ACTUAL Jazz band?

Something we don’t talk about as much?

The hours spent trying to rouse kids out of their comfy beds to get them to school on time.

Waking kids up for school is no easy task.

Just ask this mom.

After trying countless times to get her 10-year-old daughter, Sophie, out of bed and to school on time, this mom had enough.

She warned Sophie that her next step would be to bring in a band…and she did it.

Learn how to draw a chicken by printing our step by step tutorial and follow these simple instructions:

Step 1: Let’s draw a cute chicken! First, draw an oval.

Step 2: Add a drop shape below the oval.

Step 3: Draw two arched lines and erase extra lines – these will be the wings.

Step 4: Draw three ovals. Notice they’re tilted. This will be our chicken’s crest!

Step 5: Add a triangle to the crest and erase extra line. Your chicken drawing is almost done.

Step 6: Draw a set of three ovals on each side for the claws – notice how the middle ovals are smaller.

Step 7: Add a curved triangle for the beak – so cute.

Step 8: Great! Let’s add some details! Draw circles for the eyes, ovals for the cheeks, drop shapes coming down the beak for the wattle, and wavy lines on the body to make the effect of feathers.

Step 9: Amazing job! This is the most important step: Congratulate yourself for drawing a chicken!

You can eat curd, milk, or cheese after your delivery to enhance the calcium supply for yourself and the little one.

Whole Grain Cereals:

You get to spend many sleepless nights during the initial months of postpartum and still feel energized in the morning. A cup of whole-grain cereals like oats, along with a bunch of blueberries and hot milk, brings you fresh energy after a sleepless night.

Also do remember that being hydrated all through the day is very important during postpartum. Breastfeeding mothers are highly prone to dehydration so drink lots of water. You can also substitute water with any fruit juice or milk if required.

Food to Avoid After Delivery:

As said earlier, whatever food that you eat after delivery is directly going to your baby through the breastmilk. So, you have to avoid some foods that may be harmful and need to maintain strict postpartum diet restrictions. So now, let’s look at what not to eat after giving birth.

Consumption of alcohol after delivery is always a controversial topic, where there are many differences of opinions. However, experts have proved that excessive alcohol consumption can weaken your body, slow down the healing phase, and affect breast milk supply. It can also lead to unusual weight gain in babies.

You can drink coffee during the day, but not more than 3 cups. Consuming more than 3 cups or 24 ounces of caffeine may affect the sleep pattern of your baby.

Specific Sea Food:

Some seafood, especially fishes are high in mercury content. Mercury is a toxin and, when consumed, is very harmful to the baby. Food including swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, shark, and tuna are said to contain mercury, and it is better to avoid them.

Spicy Food:

My son and I googled numerous suggested college packing lists. This was my second child so I was confident that I knew what to do this time around. And with my kids 4 years apart, my older child had just completed her college journey and had a bunch of hand-me-downs for her younger brother. Items were gathered, lists were cross-checked, and the pile of Bed and Bath coupons stood at the ready.

My son was allowed to indulge a little on Dormify and got a soft grey headboard with coordinating striped comforter and matching collapsible storage boxes. Everything was meticulously sorted and collected and placed on the dining room table. Clothes draped precariously over the chairs, and somehow a big blue bean bag made its way to the top of the pile. Every corner in the SUV was filled with stuff.

No sooner did we return home than I got my first text. (Twenty20 @angela1209fu)

My husband secured the soft-top roof rack which housed the bean bag along with pillows and other light, yet bulky items. This roof rack has come in extremely handy many times over the past 5 years of college schlepping, and I highly recommend investing in one. We had carefully packed everything, by some miracle it all fit into the car, and we were off!

Five hours later we made it to our destination. My husband, son and I worked like a well-oiled machine. And after three hours there was a real semblance of a dorm room. We didn’t forget a single thing, we were all so proud! No sooner did I arrive back home the next day when the texts started coming. Mom, did we pack a flash drive?

Items for the college packing list:

Flash drive-it’s little and easily lost so it’s a put it in a snack bag and tuck it in with the chargers.
Scale-stave off the freshman weight gain with a weekly weigh in
Bathing suit – even in cold weather! Many colleges require a swim test, and often there are pools available for students who like to recreational swim.
Screen cleaner- you know those soft cloths that double as an eyeglass cleaner come in very handy to clean a computer or phone.
Bed bug spray or bed bug interceptors – I’ve heard enough college horror stories about this one and oddly it wasn’t on any list we researched.
Scarf face mask/Ski mask for those really cold schools-especially important for kids with asthma, these create a barrier for easier breathing outdoors
Pictures of pets- your child won’t forget photos of their high school besties and family photos, but they might forget about photos of Fido – and these kids really miss their furry friends!

Even if you have consulted every list you can think of (this one included!) know that you will likely forget something. Before you leave your student, find out how send mail/packages to the college. That may sound silly to those of you new to the empty nester game, but I can tell you from experience, sending things to your child’s school is not as simple as it should be.

Your student’s residence hall is most likely not their mailing address. They may have a PO Box or some central shipping location. Even when you have the correct shipping address you may receive a text like this one: “Mom – package place told me the package arrived but it’s not processed yet so i can’t get it.” So send those care packages well in advance of whatever date you want them to arrive.

Remember that most essentials can be found at the campus bookstore or are a quick Uber ride away- so it may be easier and less expensive for your student to purchase directly than for you to ship things to them.

Now get packing!

College Shopping Guide: 6 Steps to Simplify Your Dorm Shopping Trip

Dorm shopping is a rite of passage for parents to help their teens prepare for college life. It requires much more planning than any previous back-to-school shopping trip that’s ever come before.

We’ve been down the dorm shopping road with our own five kids. We shopped with them as freshmen, then later as sophomores, when they moved into college apartments and then finally when they moved, again, into first apartments.

Six steps to college shopping sanity!

Here are six steps to help you simplify the off-to-college shopping you want to do with your teen.

1. Dorm Discovery

Look on the website of your teen’s new college under “Residence Life” and find out as much as you can about the specific dorm room they will soon occupy. It is much better to learn all you can about their new space BEFORE you shop to avoid mistakes and the need to return items that were the wrong size or prohibited.

Here’s what you can find out on most college websites:

What furniture is included
What items are prohibited
Floor plan showing if the bed is lofted and, if so, how high
Location of the bathroom
Location of the laundry facilities

Once you have a better idea about how your teen’s dorm room is configured, you can simplify the shopping list to meet their needs and fit their living space.

2. Make the bed

There is a reason why everyone makes such a fuss over dorm beds – they will soon become THE space where your teen sleeps, studies, and hangs out. Making it a comfortable refuge is worth the effort and expense. Here are the pieces that go on the list:

Mattress topper

One of our kids said that he would give up his backpack before giving up his mattress topper. It was what made all the difference to him in getting a good night’s sleep. There are options at every price point and any topper will vastly improve the brick-like mattresses that colleges supply. This memory foam mattress topper gets great reviews.

Sheet set

Look for sheets that are soft and durable and come in colors that coordinate with a comforter. Dorm rooms typically have beds that are Twin XL, which may be the only time you will shop for that size. Poppy & Fritz has adorable patterns from crisp blue and white stripe to avocados, llamas and more.

Pillow

3. Where’s the bathroom?

Regardless of how near or far the bathroom is, your teen will need a pair of shower slides or flip-flops to wear when they shower. We are big fans of Havaianas flip flops and love the range of styles offered.

4. Laundry

The number one thing to know before buying a hamper is how far away the facilities are. For one of our teens it was across the quad making the choice of an easy-to-carry and durable hamper a must.

5. Storage and organization

Help your teen create a system to organize their clothes, toiletries, shoes, extra sheets, towels and “stuff.” If you’ve found the dimensions of the furniture on the college website, this will be much easier to do than if you have to guess. Take a tape measure when you shop for under bed storage and plan this real estate space together to maximize every square inch.

Storage Ottoman

A storage ottoman is very useful to store miscellaneous items and double as a chair for extra seating for when your student has friends over.

Under-bed storage

Because the dorms are limited in terms of space, your teen will want to utilize under bed space for extra storage. Under bed storage is perfect for storing extra clothes, towels, and medications.

6. Electronics

Most students have at least a phone and laptop and many will have other electronics or appliances like a blow dryer or coffee maker. All dorm rooms are short on outlets.

Surge Protector

A surge protector, NOT just an extension cord, is what most dorms will require for extra power. This one comes with two USB ports and a six foot cord, a feature your teen will appreciate when they want to charge their phone near their bed and the outlet is on the opposite wall.

Desk Lamp

Some colleges supply a lamp or a desk with built-in desk lighting but, if your teen needs one, this lamp is has multiple brightness levels and a USB charging port to keep their phone fully charge while they are studying.

4 Crucial Additions to the College Dorm List

College freshmen are finalizing plans for school and, no doubt, their university has provided them with a long list of necessary items – immunization forms, financial information, and registration instructions.

In our household, my wife and teen have downloaded the college dorm checklist and headed off to Bed Bath and Beyond to get the requisite shower caddies and surge protectors. They’ve rented the micro fridge and selected the meal plan.

The items on the list are nearly all checked off. But speaking from experience, here are four items to add to your student’s college dorm list before they venture off for their extended stay away from home.

There are important things that students need to do before they leave for college.

Four safety items to add to the dorm checklist

1. Health Services Arrangements

The campus probably has a student health center and your student already has information on hours, coverage requirements, records transfer, etc. However, on most campuses, the student health center isn’t open 24 hours a day. Even when open, it can be challenging to get an appointment, especially during cold and flu season. Locate a nearby pharmacy, urgent care facility and local hospital emergency room. Both of you record the locations and phone numbers. Decide how your student will get there for an appointment, or in an emergency.

Look at what transportation services the campus offers and if they have any specific practices or services for emergencies. Decide what you are going to do if there is a medical emergency. Do you go? Are you prepared to go? Do you have a contact locally or at the school that can help you, even if it is just to get information?

One Saturday around midnight, my son called me to say he had been very sick all day and was going down to the main desk in the dorm to see about going to a doctor. That was the last I heard from him for 12 hours. The resident attendant, (per school policy – which I didn’t know at the time) called an ambulance that took him to the hospital. I called his phone for several hours, but the hospital had taken it along with his other personal items.

Around 6 AM, I started calling the local hospitals (there were seven). None of them had any record, or wouldn’t confirm, that he was admitted. My wife was out of town, and I couldn’t reach her. He was hours away. Should I stay and keep making calls from home? Do I drive the three hours to his campus? Whom would I even contact there?

Thankfully, the school had a person on duty that monitors for any student emergencies, and the Assistant Dean of Students called me around 8 AM to see how he was. Where he was, I told her, was the first question. It took her awhile, but she was able to track him through the campus police report, ambulance company, and found the hospital. She got me the hospital name and phone number, room number and some information about his status, and got him his phone. It was fortuitous that the school had such a policy and service. I had no plan.

He turned out to be okay, but there were those hours where he was lost and I was panicked. My take away was that it is beneficial to have a local resource at either the university or a contact in the area that can help you out in an emergency when you aren’t nearby. If there is no contact at the university or you don’t know any locals, turn to your parents association. I’ve joined the parent Facebook group and found that there are plenty of parents locally with students in attendance that are willing to help you and your student with all kinds of support, especially in an emergency.

In addition, unless your student has signed a waiver to Disclose Private Health Care information, it will be difficult to get information in an emergency. Even with a waiver, it can be a problem getting details from a third-party provider. More information on this topic is available here. A local contact may help find out information for you or be present while you cannot.

2. Safety Kit

Cue your teen’s eye roll please. You can’t make your student use it, but you can make them take it, and hopefully remember it should they need it. If there is a lockdown, fire alarm or other need to evacuate your student, will want to have some items to aid them temporarily. Get an inexpensive drawstring backpack to allow for a quick grab and go and fill it with the following items: water bottles, extra phone charger and cable, some power bars, a bandana or face mask, a cheap plastic poncho, flashlight and extra batteries.

A first aid kit is recommended, but not the standard band-aid one. Get an emergency kit, like this one that has 299 essential first aid supplies for treating minor aches and injuries.

The Red Cross also has a good one (RC-562) that is only 9x7x2″ and available from many sellers.

Some experts recommend having some cash in the kit. It is not a bad idea if there is a chance that it would remain there. If your student takes any medication, include a day or two supply.

Finally, if there is room, include some warm clothing – gloves, hat, sweatshirt/pants, and socks. At night or in cold climates they may not have time to dress during an evacuation. Both my college students have stories of the 2 AM fire alarm and standing in the snow in slippers and PJ bottoms waiting for the fire trucks to arrive.

3. Remote Computer Equipment Tracking Software

There is a lot of activity on a college campus and students will be in a comfortable, but open and unfamiliar environment with people they don’t know. They will be moving around all day, and taking their technology with them. It is unfortunate, but more than likely, that at some point your student will either lose or have one of their devices stolen. Both of my boys, at different universities, had equipment stolen in the dining hall when they left it unattended.

Remote tracking software installed on an electronic device gives your student a shot at locating the equipment, and, maybe, provide enough information to the campus police to get it back. Some universities even offer a recovery service where they will track a lost device. Even if you don’t retrieve the device, these products allow the owner to wipe all data remotely to prevent disclosing private information.

The campus may recommend particular products or applications, and offer purchase discounts. If not, there is no shortage of good products and applications available. Android vendors and Apple offer apps with their devices.

There are many other solutions on the market, both free and fee based, depending on your preferences. You will even see products, like Tile stickers, that allow tracking of other valuables or items like keys that a student may misplace. A quick web search will turn up dozens of choices, or consult with your local geek squad team for a recommendation.

Be sure to pick a product that works on all of your student’s devices. If your student has a PC and iPhone, get one system that works with both windows and IOS. Second, select a product that has a web-based console that either you or your student can log into so you can issue the commands if they can’t. Don’t wait until your student is off to school to think about this. These features need to be setup ahead of time and it will be easiest to do while at home, especially if some technical assistance is needed.

4. Renters Insurance

Get renters insurance. Anything that can happen at home can happen at school, and you need to make sure your student has loss coverage. Estimate the cost to replace clothing, books, electronic equipment, furniture, other personal items, and don’t forget that micro fridge. It is likely that your insurance company offers this type of policy, so start with them for a quote.

Some policies will automatically cover electronic and camera equipment and some require a separate rider, so be sure to ask. A renter’s policy will likely include liability coverage for protection in the event of injury to a third-party occurring in your student’s living space.

That’s it. Except for those last-minute items that you need from the local big box store, your college dorm list is now complete.

Computer Sciences is one of the most popular college majors but many students know little about it before they arrive on campus. Getting PGS And PGD Before IVF Treatment

Fertility issues have plagued many couples’ lives. The technological advancement and innovation in fertility treatments have helped many couples start a family of their own. In vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments have changed the lives of many families for the better. If you are planning on getting an IVF treatment, you need to know about Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD).

What is Preimplantation Genetic Screening(PGS)?

PGS is a procedure that screens an embryo to check if it has the right number of chromosomes. A total of 23 pairs of chromosomes are required to make a healthy human baby.

IVF treatments are known for multiple pregnancies. This is because multiple embryos are inserted into the uterus to increase the chances of implantation. When the number of chromosomes is less or more than the required 23 pairs, it can lead to miscarriages. In order to avoid this, fertility centers advise couples to do PGS. The PGS normal embryo success rate is quite high since defective embryos are not implanted.

What is meant by Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis(PGD)?

Unlike PGS, PGD is a procedure that screens the couple’s embryo for any known genetic disease or defective gene that can cause disease. If the male or the female has a family history of certain genetic diseases, they can be carriers of the defective gene. They need not suffer from the disease itself but can have the gene that can pass on the disease to the next generation.

In order to avoid this, PGD is done and the defective gene can also be removed. Some of the diseases the PGD screens are:

Hemophilia A
BRAC 1 & BRAC 2 can cause breast and ovarian cancers
Cystic Fibrosis
Sickle Cell Anemia
Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Huntington’s Disease

What is the Cost of IVF with PGD?

The PGD cost is not included in the cost of the IVF treatment. Any IVF treatment cost quoted is generally excluding PGD testing cost. Couples undergoing IVF and PGD need to remember, they need to consider the entire IVF with PGD cost when they decide to go in for this treatment. This can be quite expensive and even more so if more than one attempt is required.

If budget is indeed a constraint for you, do find out how much does IVF with PGD costs before you sign up for it. Do remember your expenses do not stop here and the entire pregnancy and the baby after will require you to spend constantly.

How is PGD/PGS Testing Different from Genetic Testing?

A genetic test is done on a person to determine if they have any genetic disorders or diseases. On the other hand, PGS and PGD are done on an embryo before it is implanted in the uterus.
While genetic testing tests a person or the parent to be, PGS and PGD test the newly fertilized egg.
Genetic testing can tell a person if they have any genetic disorders or diseases or even a defective gene they can pass on to their children. This type of testing is done on newborn babies too, to check for any genetic disorders that could have been passed down from the parents.

What are the Reasons for PGD being Prescribed?

Since an IVF is an expensive procedure and is done to help couples who are unable to get pregnant naturally, all IVF treatments recommend a PGD. Embryos that have a defective gene are not used in IVF treatments. This increases the IVF success rate and results in healthy pregnancies and babies.

When an embryo with a genetic defect is implanted, not only can it result in a miscarriage but can also result in a baby being born with genetic disorders or diseases. Science has come a long way and PGD helps couples who are already struggling to conceive, to have a healthy child.

Are there any Risks Involved in PGS/PGD Testing?

Any testing or medical procedure comes with its own set of disadvantages. Some of the risks involved in PGS and PGD testing are:

The tests do not screen for all genetic disorders and diseases, hence the chances of conceiving a baby with defects are not nil
A false-negative test result could lead to implanting the wrong embryo which can then result in a miscarriage or a baby with defects
A false-positive test result can show there are no healthy embryos to transfer
There is no guarantee the baby will be free of genetic disorders or diseases
The IVF PGD process can result in ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

Here are a few frequently asked questions regarding PGD and PGS testing:

1 .What does PGS Testing tell you?

The PGS helps in determining if the embryo is healthy enough and well-balanced. When a chromosome is missing, it can not only result in a miscarriage but can result in other genetic disorders like Down Syndrome too. With PGS results, IVF treatments can be more successful.

2. Should everyone do PGS Testing?

PGS is not recommended for everyone opting for an IVF. It is recommended only if:

The woman is more than 38 years of age
You want only a single child and avoid multiple births
You are particular about gender (this is still illegal in India)
You have had miscarriages earlier
You have had failed IVF treatments

3. What is the IVF Success Rate with PGS Testing?

The data on this is not clear as research is being carried out only for women between the age of 39 and 41. Women below 35 are not considered and hence PGS-normal success rate is inconclusive. Also, IVF with miscarriage rate is also unknown.

4. Does PGS/PGD Cost a lot?

Any genetic testing is expensive when compared to other medical tests and treatments. However, with an increase in the number of players in this market, the tests are competitively priced. Do your research and choose what suits your budget and needs.

Summer Vacation: 30 Ways Students Can Make the Most of Free Time

This was a stressful year for families and students need the summer to rest and relax.

But THEIR down time during the summer months can sometimes collide with the real responsibilities we have as parents. Plus, there is only so much Netflix teens can watch until boredom takes over. Your teen may actually welcome ideas of productive things to do.

Here are 30 ways that students can make the most of summer vacation. While some projects and activities pertain to college students, many are things that middle school and high school students can do.

(Hint: Print it out and leave it near the remote control where they are sure to find it.)

How students can use free time this summer

Some students may have found work this summer, but, if they still have time on their hands, here are ideas for how to use their free time.

1. Look for a internship or job for the fall or for after graduation

If you are currently a college student or will be attending this fall, visit the career counseling website. Career services is an underutilized area on campus that undergraduates should begin using from freshman year on. You cannot start the process too soon.

2. Create a LinkedIn profile

LinkedIn is ground zero for many employers who scan the database for students with qualifications that match their needs. Some jobs require LinkedIn just to apply. Find a suitable (not holding a solo cup) profile picture and create an account. If you have an account already, is it up to date? And yes, high school students can create a profile.

3. Update your resume

If you’ve not needed a resume to get a summer job you will need one in college. Check your college’s career counseling website for resources or if you need more help, Handshake is a good place to start.

4. Donate or resell old books and textbooks

Is there a family car that you are allowed to use? When does the inspection sticker expire? Does the oil need changing? How about getting it washed? 9. Gather and sell old electronics

10. Get a jump on reading for the fall semester

Clutter is the enemy and you are the only one who can fight the battle between what stays and what goes in your old room. Perhaps some of those programs, pictures, knickknacks that once seemed so precious to you have lost a little luster. Time to trash things now.

12. Make a digital book or 2022 calendar

When was the last family vacation that you took with your parents and siblings? With the pandemic curtailing travel, that trip might be even more meaningful than you realized at the time! Why not create a photo book or calendar for 2022 with pics that are living on your phone? 13. Research study abroad options

if you’re planning on studying abroad, this is the ideal time to research programs, both ones that your college offers and others that are available elsewhere. Ask around for recommendations from other students and see what advice they have for you.

14. Get safety training

Look at the Red Cross website or visit your local YMCA’s website and see if there are any programs offered that can lead to certification in CPR, first aid, or lifeguarding. Many options have both online and unperson options.

15. Research graduate programs and requirements

You may find it hard to see beyond life as a college student, but if you think that graduate school is in your future somewhere down the road, take the time to look at a few university websites. Find out about required entrance exams, average GPAs, undergraduate course work required, firms that recruit at the school…. understanding more about grad programs might give you more focus as a college student.

16. Consign or donate clothes

Are any of your clothes or accessories consignment-worthy? Alternatively, if they are still wearable but you no longer have any need for them, look for a Goodwill, or local charity that can use what you no longer need.

17. Learn to cook

Time in the kitchen is never wasted and the best way to learn to cook is to, simply, cook. Your parents have been the ones planning, shopping for and preparing meals for decades. Why not take over the responsibilities for a few evenings and master some new recipes at the same time? Maybe your parents would be willing to sign up for a meal subscription service like Blue Apron IF you do the cooking.

18. Help your neighbors

There’s never been a better time to reach out to your neighbors to see if they could use your help this summer. Elderly neighbors, in particular, might need someone to run errands, grocery shop, or take care of walking their dog.

19. Create an exercise routine

If you’ve never gotten in the habit, this could be a perfect time to begin to exercise so that when school begins again, you have a healthy new habit for the fall. There are infinite online options that offer guided instruction with varying length of class times and types – strength, core, yoga, aerobic, and more. Plus, with gyms opening up again, the options are endless.

20. Set goals

It’s the perfect time to think about what you hope to accomplish during the school year 2021-22. Think about goals that are short-term academic ones but also think about longer-term goals, too. Start by reading this newly-released bestseller, The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter and How to Make the Most of Them, by Dr. Meg Jay.

21. Make a budget

Create a spreadsheet and sit with your parents to review your financial needs for the summer and the fall. This is a very good exercise to do, especially if you’re going to college this fall and will need to manage more of your own finances.

22. Plan a family excursion

Although summer feels like it will go on forever, there are only so many weekends when your entire family might be free to gather for an outing. These are memories your family will cherish.

23. Assemble two interview-worthy outfits

When it’s time to meet with for a job interview, you’ll need to project a professional appearance. For virtual interviews, make sure you’re ready with Zoom tops or jackets. Go through your closet and see what fits, what needs to be tailored and cleaned. If you need to shop, look for stores that offer student discounts.

24. Get the old gang together

Take the initiative, send out a few texts and plan a get together this summer. The time for face-to-face gatherings is now!

25. Doctors appointments

Have you outgrown the pediatrician’s office with the toys scattered around the waiting room floor? Talk to your parents about switching to an internist for your next appointment. While you’re at it, do you need to see a dentist, dermatologist, the eye doctor, a gynecologist? Stop asking your mom to make these appointments for you and get them on your calendar.

26. Internships

Are you looking for an internship this summer? Many firms have shorter internships that start mid-summer.

27. Check in with your high school guidance counselor

As a college student, you can be a helpful resource for current high school students, especially since so many student have NOT been able to visit campuses in person. Let your counselor know you’re willing to offer advice and counsel.

28. A dose of culture

Are there museums in your hometown (or nearby) which you haven’t visited since you were in 3rd grade? Maybe it’s time to give culture another shot especially since you can visit in person.

29. Give your dog a bath

Take on the messy responsibility of bath time and enjoy the one-on-one with your best buddy. While you’re at it, take a close look at what it costs to own and take care of a dog. Many students love the IDEA of a dog but are shocked at how expensive it is to buy food and pay for wellness care.

30. Volunteer your time

If you can volunteer in your community this might be THE very best way to spend summer vacation. There are also virtual volunteer opportunities to explore.

German Shepherd Fetches Ball, Comes Back To Find Soldier Returned Home [Video]

As someone who is an avid animal lover, there are certain things that will always make me tear up…

Nothing better than this…

…small animals being rescued, any animal finally finding a home, and soldiers returning to their pets after being away.

This one honestly pushed me over-the-top on the tearful factor because I didn’t expect the dog to be so vocal.

Hand me a tissue, please.

After some time away, this soldier returned to his beloved german shepherd.

The dog had been staying with his parents, and while they played with him and loved him, they just weren’t dad.

Playing wasn’t the same.

So when ‘dad’ came home, they decided they wanted to surprise the pooch.

The soldier’s dad starts the surprise by throwing the dog’s favorite toy and telling him to go get it.

When he does?

He immediately see’s who is waiting for him.

And it is beautiful.

I got it!

The sounds this dog makes are a mixture of incredibly sweet, and almost heartbreaking!

You can hear exactly how much he’s been missing his pet-papa, and how much it means to have him back.

An Ovary is a female reproductive organ that secretes the female hormones and releases the eggs for fertilization. They also help protect the eggs. There are two ovaries in every female reproductive system. When a girl is born, these ovaries are bundles of tissue. But, as she grows, her ovaries grow alongside. The size of ovaries depends on various factors and differs from person to person. Let’s get more insights into the size of ovaries and how it is related to pregnancy.

What are the Reasons or Factors that Lead to Change in the Size of the Ovary?

A normal ovary size is about the size of a large grape. But, several factors can influence the size of your ovary.

As a girl grows, the ovary grows along with her. Before a girl attains puberty, the ovaries are smaller than the average size. It starts growing once she reaches puberty and is the largest when she is pregnant. When menopause starts crawling after 35 years, lesser eggs are fertilized, and the size of the ovaries shrinks to as low as 2 cm.

Ovarian Disorder:

Ovarian disorders are majorly caused by cysts – Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). The cysts are pockets filled with fluid on the surface of the ovary. This is a common disorder faced by many women. They are neither painful nor harmful. Many women do not even know they have a cyst. However, these cysts might be dangerous in the following situations.

Functional Cysts:

When the hormones required for the release of eggs from the follicle are secreted in a smaller amount, multiple cysts may form on the surface of the ovaries. This can lead to infertility and other serious diseases, including diabetes and heart problems. These are generally painless and tend to disappear on their own after a few menstrual cycles.

Dermoid Cyst:

They are commonly known as “teratomas.” They are formed from embryonic cells. Hence, they may develop specific tissues on the ovary like skin, hair, teeth, etc. They are caused when the skin structures are confined during fetal development.

Cystadenomas:

They are watery or mucous cysts formed on the surface of the ovaries.

The Dermoid and Cystadenomas cysts may grow bigger and sometimes may shift the position of the ovaries. The shift may twist the ovary and can be very painful. This is known as Ovarian Torsion. It may also hinder the flow of blood to the ovaries.

Medical Treatments:

Women may undergo medical treatment for infertility. In the course of the treatment, certain hormonal injections may be infused to enable the ovary to release eggs for fertilization. So, the ovaries tend to be larger during ovulation and shrink back after ovulation.

Pregnancy:

During pregnancy, Estrogen and Progesterone are secreted in a larger amount to support the pregnancy. During such secretion, the ovaries tend to be larger. It is always suggested to take up a normal ovary ultrasound and confirm any cysts or fibroids.

Does Ovary Size Matter While Conceiving?

To make it simple – the answer is yes. The size of the ovary certainly plays a vital role in conceiving. The fertile eggs will be secreted if the ovary is relatively larger. There are a few small follicles on the ovary. With the advent of technology, you can determine the size of your ovaries through normal ovary follicle ultrasound and blood tests. You may find multiple follicles on the ovary ultrasound.

Is there a Normal Size of Ovaries that Help in Conceiving?

The average ovary size is 3cm in length, 2.5cm in height, and 1.5cm in width in numerical terms. Apart from the size of the ovaries, the size of an egg is also crucial for conceiving. If the ovary of standard size contains eggs that are shrunk, it causes difficulties in getting pregnant.

What are the Ways to Improve Ovary Health?

There is always a solution for all the Ifs and Buts. Similarly, you can always boost the health of your ovary and egg. The following are a few of the ways to improve ovary and egg health.
