Baltimore-based hellion Phoebe Jean is a one girl band with an army of sound. Associated early on with the Baltimore club scene, she is quick to note that “My music is not electro!” On Heartbreakers, scheduled for release in the US on June 12th via the French label Lentonia Records and distributed by Nail Distribution, Phoebe Jean uses more traditional pop and rock instrumentation such as acoustic piano, guitars and to arrive at a blend of classic club breaks, soulful funk grooves, and harmonic melodies.

Born and raised in Baltimore, loved and learned in New York and Paris, Phoebe Jean is already earning accolades for Heartbreakers in Europe where features have already come in from respected European publications such as Modzikand Les Inrocks and Phoebe Jean’s Heartbreakersrecord release party was a packed affair that is still being talked about.

The album’s first single “Day Is Gone” is streaming now. The video for the track was directed by Phoebe Jean herself and features cinematography by Sienna Sheilds and choreography by Love, Grace O’ Neill. The clip also features the Shake Off Twinz who have also been seen with M.I.A. and Rye Rye. Listenas Phoebe Jean ups the pressure more and more until she lets it blow off in a massive vocal hook.

As a live act, Phoebe Jean recently caught the attention of the New York Timesat NYC’s Lower East Side venue Cake Shopwhere writer Io Tillett Wright noted that “...the group brought the low-ceilinged room to a sweat.” Back above ground, it’s 102 degrees in Baltimore City and Phoebe Jean is busy tending to her ‘77 Cadillac Seville.

My Old Kentucky Blog has exclusively premiered the video for the new single “Sympathies”by Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter Michael Gerard Levasseur aka Michael The Blind at http://www.myoldkentuckyblog.com/?p=29624.

The clip was shot a mere 12 days ago in New York by director Dominic DeJoseph (REM, Dandy Warhols, The Stills) at a new private writers and artists club called The Oracle. The cast of “Sympathies”includes local New York-based artists, comedians and musicians including photographer Kelsey Bennett and her sister, actor Remy Bennett, both of whom happen to be granddaughters of singer Tony Bennett.

Of the clip’s stark imagery, DeJoseph says, “The image of Michaellying on his back singing while others lie down next to him occurred to me as the choral section came in the first time I heard the song. I didn’t want to see an actual chorus singing, but this image seemed to create a similar effect of togetherness.”

According to Levasseur, “Sympathies” was written as an attempt at illustrating the plasticity of the relationships we have with the objects that make up our personal environment. The “things that we adore” referred to in the song point to our obsessions with cultural icons (t-shirts of Ché, postcards with radioactivity symbols, stock footage of the A-bomb, etc.), as well as old love letters, sentimental jewelry or other near and dear objects that we use as a touchstones in our personal narrative.

Levasseur explains, “I think this idea has fascinated me for a long time and the ways in which it affects my own relationships with the objects and people that I choose to surround myself with are thoroughly pervasive yet difficult to pin down.”

Seattle-based duo Luxhas revealed the video for “The Window”from its debut album We Are Not The Same.

The clip, inspired by Lux’s favorite David Lynchand Tim Burton movies, was initially planned to be fully animated, but now stars the band’s Leah Rosen and David Chandler (Rosen also directed the clip.) Woody Allen was an inspiration as well. “The first scene is inspired by ‘Midnight In Paris,’ the latest Woody flick that we watched and loved,” says Rosen.

The video is a visual representation of the abnormal sleep paralysis and hypnogogic hallucinations that afflict Rosen. She explains, “With my disorder, sometimes I'll wake up, but I'll still be physically paralyzed, which causes the hypnotic hallucinations. These hallucinations usually consist of me trying to turn on the bedroom light or screaming for someone to wake me up. All I want to do is wake up, but I can’t.”

This kind of unique perspective has endeared new fans to Lux since its formation in early 2010. The band’s sound, inspired by some of the most essential artists of the era of indie and underground music (Pavement, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, The Magnetic Fields, The Jesus & Mary Chain, New Order, Blondie), features Rosen and Chandler trading off vocals, guitars, synths and drum programming.

In addition to recent coverage from Black Book and a nod for “The Window” as KEXP’s “Song of The Day,”fans can look for Lux featured in the upcoming June issue of MAGNETmagazine. We Are Not The Same, the debut album by Lux is out now.
