Brooklyn-based psychedelic pop-rock duo TKTTSM (pronounced “ticketism”) has now expanded to a six-piece ensemble. The band will bring its high energy show to the Mercury Lounge on Friday, May 31^st. All of the gymnastic instrumentation, Bjork-like vocals, and Crosby, Stills & Nash harmonies found on the band’s debut album will be on full display, exploding from the stage with precision and emotion.

TKTTSM songwriters Johanna Stahleyand Owen O’Mahony share their love of pop, noise, experimentation, and improvisation on TKTTSM’s self-titled debut. Most of the album’s lyrics were co-written with a stream of consciousness approach. The instrumentation and skewed pop vocals that color these catchy songs are a perfect representation of the band’s love of exploration, animals, and freedom; and their dislike of politicians, financial institutions and any other power hungry villains.

“Since the release of the album, we have been searching for the right players to help us bring our vision to life,” says Stahley of the band’s new live lineup, which includes Jacob Colin Cohen on drums, Matt Cusack on bass, Reinder Oldenburger on guitar, and Lauren Zettler on synths. “They turned out to be more than great players – each is such a creative force!,” Stahley says.

To celebrate the band’s upcoming show, TKTTSM is making a new remix of its “Eyeyeye” single available for free download via Beats Per Minute. The reworking of the track is by Nate Tannenbaum of the New York City based production team NAOAN, which has previously collaborated on remixes for I Am Lightyear and No Way Josie. NAOANis now working on the upcoming single “50 Cent Lemonade” by Lubrication.

“‘Eyeyeye’might be my favorite song on the album,” Stahleysays. “I was so deep in thought driving through Queens that I got lost and ended up in the projects. That’s when the lyric “fists punching in the sky-eye-eye” popped into my head. It was a strong image, like some kind of apocalyptic last stand against the end of time.”

TKTTSM released its debut album in the fall of 2012 to airplay on nearly 150 non-commercial radio stations, including spins on KCRW from veteran DJ Gary Calamar. Calamar, who is also the Music Supervisor for Showtime’s “True Blood”and “Dexter,” among other television shows and films, went on to mention he was “digging” TKTTSM in a January, 2013 Entertainment Weekly article titled “The Best Songs On TV This Season.” TKTTSMwas mentioned in Entertainment Weeklyagain in March, 2013 alongside MSTRKFT, SBTRKT and MS MR.

“Where did the love go? Was it ever there? Did I imagine it?” Janaysa Lambert of Mortar & Pestle is discussing the themes behind the band’s song “Pristine Dream,” the latest tune taken from the Oakland-based trio’s just-released self-titled debut EP, streaming now via hometown paper East Bay Express. “‘Pristine Dream’ is about the very moment the illusion of love fades and you realize the picture you held in your mind, is not the reality.”

A remix of the track by Antler (http://antlermusic.com) recently debutedvia Earmilk. Antleris the brainchild of Oakland-based producer Jason Collins whose musical journey began as a classically trained guitarist. His love of hip-hop, electronics and the avant-garde led Collinsto explore much more experimental horizons, however. Through the use of live instruments, analog synthesizers, vintage samples, and digital sound design, Antler creates expansive textures with dirty beats and heavy bass.

Mortar & Pestle is a new band, but has deep roots. The sounds of a pinball machine at the opening of new EP might say fun, but give way to a darkness that is real. Born on the kitchen piano of a studio apartment, days after Lambertand keyboardist Paul Shinichi first met at a mutual friend’s party, the two were joined within the year by drummer Sean Paul Duke.

Tragically, the friend who brought them together met with an untimely death shortly after she gave the band its name. “She wanted to be the one to name us,” says Shinichi. “We were struggling with a name for months, and then she came up with Mortar & Pestle. I think honoring her life is one reason why we are together. This record is really about her.”

Mortar & Pestle recently completed its first string of Pacific Northwest shows and will celebrate with a hometown performance at San Francisco’s Brick & Mortar Music Hall tonight, May 22^nd, at 8PM PST (RSVP). San Antonio-based band The March Divide will issue “Music for Television” on July 9^th via Seattle’s Dead Letter Records label. The new EP is the follow-up to the band’s debut album Music for Film, released earlier this year. “So It Goes,” the lead single from “Music for Television” has premieredexclusively via BLURT, and The March Divide has announced two weeks of tour dates, launching in Tulsa on Wednesday.

After six years away from music after ending his Emo-era band, The Conversation, band leader Jared Putnam realized that getting back in wasn’t so easy. “When I formed The March Divide and decided to start working on an album, I had a really difficult time,” he says. Upon the release of the band’s debut Music for Film, however, it was readily apparent that half a dozen years away had not taken a toll on Putnam’s songwriting chops. Called “impressively hooky” by American Songwriter, Austin’s NPRaffiliate KUTX simply stated, “This album kicks butt.”

Music for Film, which showed off Putnam’s love of The Promise Ring, Cursive, and Elliott Smith, spawned the singles “Still Analog,” which popular vinyl lovers website The Vinyl District said could be its “proverbial theme song,” and “Jose Cuervo” which racked up thousands of Soundcloud streams and coverage from Under The Radar for its moving slice-of-life video. One fan plainly commented, “How this song is not more popular is beyond me.”
