Michael Bublé is now following David Archuleta.  And he only follows 33 people.   Must have been recent.

But what prompted it?  Is there an E1MusicCanada connection?  A Paul Anka connection?  Or one with David Foster?  Or is that Bublé’s wife is from Argentina, which is in ….. South America??   Or did Bublé, a hockey enthusiast,  watch the Mighty Ducks commercial featuring David?

 According to an Oprah interview on 9 October 2009, Bublé dreamed of becoming a famous singer since age two. When he was a teenager, he slept with his Bible and prayed to become a singer. Bublé’s interest in jazz music began around age five when his family played Bing Crosby’s White Christmas album at Christmas time. The first time that his family noticed his singing talent was at Christmas time when Bublé was 13 years old, and they heard him powerfully sing the phrase “May your days be merry and bright” when the family was singing to the song “White Christmas” in a car ride.

In 2000, Bublé’s career breakthrough came from a quite surprising chain of events. An aide to former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Michael McSweeney, saw Bublé’s performance at a business party and received a copy of Bublé’s self-financed independent album. McSweeney showed the album to Mulroney and his wife and Bublé was subsequently invited to sing at the wedding of Mulroney’s daughter Caroline, where he sang Kurt Weill’s “Mack the Knife”.  At the wedding, Bublé was introduced to David Foster, a multi-Grammy Award-winning producer and record executive who had worked previously with artists such as Madonna, Brandy Norwood, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Céline Dion, Barbra Streisand, Kenny G., Cher, Josh Groban, and Andrea Bocelli.

Initially, Foster was reluctant to sign Bublé to his 143 Records label because he “didn’t know how to market this kind of music.” Bublé moved to Los Angeles for a brief period, with his agent, to convince Foster to sign him. Eventually, Foster agreed to produce an album for him if he raised $500,000 to cover the costs of the production, which Bublé did. Foster ended up covering the costs of production in the end under his label, with no assurances of support fromWarner Brothers, and after Bublé received the personal stamp of approval and support of Foster’s friend Paul Anka. After David Foster agreed to produce Bublé’s debut album, Bruce Allen, whom Bublé had pursued for years to be his manager, also signed Bublé.

Bublé did some acting in this period; in 2000, as a karaoke singer in Duets opposite Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis, and in 2001, as Van Martin (a club owner), in Totally Blonde.

My David Triad

If you had to put together your own personal time David-related time capsule, and you could only put in one picture, one video and one written message from David, what would you chose?

This is an impossible question to answer, right?  We have 5000 pictures, give or take, in our media library.  How do you pick one?  Or one performance video, interview or vlog?  Or one quote?  Ridiculous!

On David’s only day off in Manila, he chooses to go to meet children at one of his favourite charities.  The natural smile while chatting with the children is defining, as well as the cause.

I didn’t pick a performance video, because it’s just too hard.  This is a defining interview for me.  Early in the Idol tour, this interviewer didn’t ask about girlfriends, or what Simon was like and how it felt to be Idol runner up.  She just let David talk, and talk he did.   And we got an early glimpse at his musical leanings.  I found this interview laced with moments of  innocence, while being profound at the same time.

A thought.

I picked a recent one, that defines David’s commitment.  Unwavering.

David Duets

Watching the vid of Apologize from AI7 Finale night reminded me of what a respectful artist David is.  Whenever he sings with another artist or as part of a larger group, he never tries to out-sing or outshine the other performer(s) – though he easily could if he wanted to.  He tends to seek the harmony and tries to balance his voice with the other artist.  I would love if he recorded an album of duets – Harmony – I like it!

Our first glimpse of vocal greatness – David stepped into the Idol audition room and after a brief explanation of his previous vocal paralysis (they look at him like he’s some kind of nutcase) he launches into WOTWTC and you can see them all sit up and take notice!  When Randy joins in with “waitin’” I knew David was going to Hollywood!

David on Hannah Montana – I can hear the groans now – though some thought that David should go the Disney route, it seems that David likes to watch Disney/Pixar more than he likes people watching him on Disney lol – we’re still holding out for a voice-over character on a Pixar movie though!  I Wanna Know You from the Promma Mia episode is a catchy tune – although it has too little David and too much Miley – but I remind myself that it was after all, Miley’s show.  Some Disney exec in their short-sightedness did not have I Wanna Know You released as a single – initially the only way you could buy it was to buy the whole Miley album – I’m guessing most people have an mp3 version they ripped from You Tube.

Five years have gone by and I still watch Promma Mia on tv every time it’s on!

Christmas is the perfect season for duets of all kinds, and David has his share!  David and Christmas music are a perfect match, then you add another artist and joy is in the air!  I think David should record a whole album of Christmas Duets – Merry Merry – I like it!

David featured Charice on his CFTH album – singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Charice said she didn’t even see David during the recording (he was on the AI tour at the time) tracks were recorded separately and combined in production.  However, they got to share the stage at The Grove in 2010.  David is under the weather, so his voice isn’t in top form, but it’s still a lovely duet!  Their hand motions mirror each other – I wonder if they knew that lol – oh Charice does Jingle Bell Rock at the end.

David gets to “jam” with Jeff at the last show of the MKOC tour – amazing and bittersweet because we knew this signaled the end of David concerts for two years – this is the kind of vibe where David excels – cool r&b with room for him to play with the melody and his vocals – love, love love it!  More duets like this please!

AI7 ~ A Finale to Remember

It started like this:

And what happened in between was a night to remember!  I was GLUED to my tv and my heart was beating so fast hoping that I had voted enough, that WE had voted enough to make our David the next American Idol!  As with all things that you are desperately waiting for, the time seemed to drag on even though the show was filled with amazing performances and some semi-funny moments.  I won’t belabor the outcome, but suffice it to say, I was MAD then depressed for a week (more like a month – or two – but who’s counting).  There was some consolation because David was on tv a lot – talk shows and singing the National Anthem at sports events, so at least we got to see him quite often.

I have the Finale on Tivo – and to this day, I cannot (maybe will not) watch Ryan announce the results ~ I’ll keep trying to take the Zen approach like David would, and just be grateful that American Idol at least got it right when someone in San Diego had the presence of mind at the auditions to chase David down to tell him he was in.

Five seasons later finds us at the AI12 Finale, where two amazingly talented women went toe-to-toe and mic-to-mic to see who would be crowned this year’s American Idol – I didn’t watch the show so I don’t know if there was a cheesy theme or not, but I have watched a few You Tube vids and can tell that both women poured themselves out on the stage – like David vs. David, they gave it their all, so I think maybe no matter who is actually crowned American Idol, the real winner is music and fans of music, and in our case, fans of David Archuleta’s music, so Thank You Idol for bringing us David – that’s one thing you got absolutely right!
