Bon Iver: A Most Unexpected Guest

Kanye Westâs fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, sold half a million units in its first week and received perfect review ratings from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and other top music critics. Congrats Kanye, but I’m not gonna let you finish. (Ba dum ch!)

This article is not about Kanye West. Itâs about an artist who was, perhaps, the most unexpected guest artist on Kanye’s latest record - Bon Iver. I didnât really pay attention to Bon Iver until ‘Monster’, the first Good Friday release - but then I did some research.

Bon Iver started as a home recording project of Justin Vernon, whoâs debut For Emma, Forever Ago was recorded at a cabin in Wisconsin. The result is a flawless, dreamy folk record thatâs perfect for spending the day in bed. Call me crazy, but I even hear hints of DâAngelo in some of Vernonâs falsetto vocal lines. Bon Iver has since evolved into a full band and has subsequently released an EP titled Blood Bank.

Anyway, check out the tracks below for (in my opinion) the choicest sounds from Bon Iver, followed by a couple clips from La Blogotheque’s Take Away Shows.

Band To Watch: Mini Mansions

If pure sound had the capability to project images on a blank wall, Mini Mansions would be worthy projectionists. On a break from Queens of the Stone Age, Michael Shuman melded heads and locked arms with longtime friends Tyler Parkford and Zach Dawes in a dusty room in the San Fernando Valley. Here, they began a collaborative séance out of which birthed Mini Mansions in January of 2009. Though their triangle is usually confined to piano, bass, and a cocktail drum kit, the LA-based trio generates a Technicolor spectrum of sound drawn from the baroque, gothic, psychedelic, and cinematic realms. Their debut self-titled release curtsies to the past, bows to the present, and foreshadows a progressively more abstract future.

Truth: I fucking hate Queens of the Stonage.

They sound like Pet Sounds era Beach Boys, and I love me some beach boys. Dig the video for Kiddie Hypnogogia, today’s video of the day on Spinner.com. Get at some tour dates on their myspace page.

“Hypnogogia is a neural disorder where the subject experiences a state of temporary paralysis between sleeping and waking states,” Michael Shuman of Mini Mansions tells Spinner. “We all wanted a video to suck up pieces of that same grey zone without being outlandishly surreal, which is what the artist Druid Beat ended up spitting out in many, many colors. Though I don’t remember playing him, I’ll miss the squid monster.” Wake up and dream with the video below.
