Fresh new start up – crowd sourcing funds for food ventures Alexander Ginsberg is passionate about finding good food. He wants to help you find New Tastes Better! Check Them Out @yumspring http://www.facebook.com/yumspring @FounderMatchup @AlexMGinsberg @swarthmore Welcome! Yumspring will be the first crowdfunding platform for foodie-ventures; a place where chefs, bakers, brewers, canners and all other sorts of anti-hunger innovators can connect with people who have an appetite to support new, local, adventurous food entrepreneurs. Whether to launch or grow a business or to find a little help getting the dough for that new piece of equipment, the foodie-creators will lay down the details of their needs, submitting them to the crowd for comment & review. If the idea shows potential, the crowd will support it with funding. In return, they’ll receive some kind of reward. The reward could be a thank you letter or a VIP pass to cut the line at the counter no matter how long; it could be a name on a sign on a food truck, or guaranteed reservations on opening night. Eventually, businesses will be able to offer revenue sharing for top supporters. In this way, we’ll change the way foodie-ventures are launched and expanded. First stop, Philadelphia. So, now what? 1) If you are a web developer, we need you! We are still looking for technical cofounders. 2) If you’re a foodie-entrepreneur of any sort and want help springing your business idea to life or growing it without selling your soul, we want to help. 3) If you love food and want to support innovative ventures, you found the right place.
You might recognise Mike Norris as the guy who plays keyboards in La Roux’s live band. But you might not recognise him as Fort Romeau, the one man production unit currently specialising in lush deep house that nods toward Detroit and Chicago. His forthcoming debut LP ‘Kingdoms’, out March 6, took Mixmag HQ totally by surprise. Released by the consistently on-point 100% Silk, it’s Norris’ very first release as Fort Romeau and contains 8 tracks of retro-referencing house that moves in a forward thinking direction. We asked the man himself to go into the mix and he’s come back with a 45 minute work out that takes in Boddika, Kassem Mosse, Midland and Evan Tuell. It’s a highly rhythmic selection from a producer who has come up with one of the best records of the year so far, which you can also preview below. Check it! 1.
Heart Stop Beating is a three-minute documentary film about the no-pulse, continuous-flow artificial heart, which Dan Baum writes about in our Future of Medicine issue. It tells the story of Billy Cohn & Bud Frazier, two visionary doctors from the Texas Heart Institute, who in March of 2011 successfully replaced a dying man’s heart with the device they developed, proving that life was possible without a pulse or a heart beat. Message us, or email chordella.official@gmail.com We look forward to seeing you all there! CHORDELLA :: Biography Conrad and Nik are the internationally recognized deejay and producer duo known as Chordella. Over the past year, the two producers have worked tirelessly, forging their unique sound. The magic behind Chordella lies within the notion that opposites attract. Conrad, originally a trance producer, and Nik, primarily a deep house artist, certainly represent opposite ends of the EDM spectrum, but the two have made it work – and in marvelous style. Big room house is how many describe Chordella’s sound: a unique fusion of melodies, chord progressions, and driving bass lines, walking in the footsteps of bay area favorite and international superstar Max Vangeli. The year 2011 marked the start of a new chapter for both artists; Conrad and Nik joined forces in April 2011, forming Chordella. AND SO THEY BEGAN After meeting at a local coffee shop through a mutual friend, Conrad and Nik mused at the idea of getting into the studio and making a track together. When the opportunity eventually emerged, both Nik and Conrad sat down in front of Cubase, and in a matter hours they laid the foundation for their first track “La Sinfonia.” The partnership evolved. A few weeks later, seeking the attention of record labels, Conrad and Nik entered a remix contest through Om Records – for local artists, Soultice. In just an hour and half the duo nailed down a timeless remix of the instant classic “Realistic.” After a blissful three weeks of voting, the duo placed third with their “San Francisco Mix” – merely missing out on their remix earning a release. THE BIG BREAK After Nik and Conrad’s early success with Om Records, the duo persevered in the studio, and soon after they earned a residency at local club, Studio 8. Continuing in a positive direction, the two producers were on the look out for their next great opportunity. With the onset of summer, Skullcandy’s Identity Electronic Music Festival swept across the United States, spreading EDM bedlam from Boston to Los Angeles. Eager to earn a name for themselves, the duo took advantage of Skullcandy’s unprecedented offer to earn a booking on the Identity Music Festival Tour. The contest was simple. Have an original track? Submit it. Each entry was listened to and judged by the likes of Avicii, Kaskade, Steve Aoki, The Crystal Method, Datsik, The Disco Biscuits, and Le Castle Vania – with the eventual grand prize winner playing the festival. After weeks...

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUl6T2hQIbk&w=420&h=315] Republican candidate Rick Santorum raised a fuss this weekend – one of several – by saying on ABC News’This Week that he “almost threw up” after reading John F. Kennedy’s 1960 speech on religion. “I don’t believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute,” Santorum said. “The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country.” That speech, which Kennedy delivered in Houston on September 12, 1960, is a landmark of American politics. The Massachusetts senator’s Catholic faith had become a hot-button issue in the campaign, with critics speculating darkly that as president he would take orders from the pope. Kennedy sought to allay those fears by laying out his views on separation of church and state. Here’s a key passage early in the speech: [B]ecause I am a Catholic, and no Catholic has ever been elected President, the real issues in this campaign have been obscured — perhaps deliberately, in some quarters less responsible than this. So it is apparently necessary for me to state once again — not what kind of church I believe in, for that should be important only to me — but what kind of America I believe in.I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute – where no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote — where no church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference — and where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the President who might appoint him or the people who might elect him. I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish — where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source — where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials — and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all. Kennedy, of course, went on to beat Richard Nixon two months later and become president. The speech is remembered as one of the finest in American politics, and is cited as the template for both the speech on race in America that then-Senator Obama delivered in the wake of the Jeremiah Wright controversy four years ago and a 2007 speech by Mitt Romney that addressed his Mormonism. Santorum may be misreading Kennedy somewhat — the future president wasn’t saying that “people of faith had no role in the public sphere,” as Santorum put it, but that it should not be a disqualifying factor for candidates, nor should it supersede the oath of office. But Santorum, himself a Catholic, seems to...

Germany Developing Drill for Saturn Ice-Covered Moon. To see if life does lurk beneath the frigid crust of one of Saturn’s moons, scientists are developing a powerful drill that can melt and bore its way down to the moon’s icy depths. Giant jets of water ice have been seen spewing into space from cryovolcanoes on Enceladus, Saturn’s sixth largest moon. When NASA’s Cassini spacecraft flew through these icy fountains, the probe detected organic compounds that hinted at the possibility of life. But the problem with investigating cryovolcanoes for alien life is that landing directly on them is too risky. Furthermore, any potential traces of life could be destroyed during their launch from the fissures and subsequent exposure to the hostile conditions of space. Instead, researchers are envisioning ways to dig into the icy crust of Enceladus to look for signs of life in the water that is thought to lurk beneath the moon’s surface, before the icy fountains burst upward. The concept is to establish a base station that is a safe distance from a cryovolcano on the surface of Enceladus. This base station would power a probe dubbed IceMole, which is designed to melt and drill its way down to a depth of 330 to 660 feet (100 to 200 meters) at speeds of about 3 feet (1 meter) per hour. IceMole is a rectangular box about 6 inches by 6 inches by 47 inches (15 centimeters by 15 centimeters by 120 centimeters) in size. Its square head holds 12 separate heaters that can reach up to 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius). By varying the amount of heat radiating from each of the heaters, IceMole can manipulate where the ice in front of it melts, enabling the probe to gradually change direction as needed. A screw protruding from its square head allows IceMole to penetrate mud if needed, and can suck in samples for the probe to analyze with onboard instruments. After IceMole reaches its target — a cryovolcanic crevasse filled with water it is hoped — it aims to sample the liquid, examining it for evidence of microbes. The project, called the Enceladus Explorer, or EnEx, was formally launched on Feb. 22, and is led by the German Aerospace Center. “EnEx deals with one of the most exciting tasks of space exploration — the search for extraterrestrial life,” Oliver Funke, project manager for the Enceladus Explorer at the German Aerospace Center, told SPACE.com. It will prove hard for IceMole to burrow its way to water, given the lack of reference points for navigation — for instance, it can’t guide itself by the stars, and it can’t navigate with a compass, as Enceladus lacks a stable, well-defined magnetic field. Nevertheless, IceMole will have to establish its position and distance to its target, calculate the best route, consider its operating range and power consumption, transmit data back to the base station, and take evasive action, if necessary, to avoid obstacles such as embedded meteorites. The probe should do so by combining a variety of sensors,...

Despite its incredibly low density, aerogel is one of the most powerful materials on the planet. It can support thousands of times its own weight, block out intense heat, cold and sound – yet it is 1,000 times less dense than glass, nearly as transparent and is composed of %99.8 air. The lowest-density silica-based aerogels are even lighter than air. Despite its fragility in certain regards and its incredible lack of density, aerogel has amazing thermal, acoustical and electrical insulation properties as illustrated by the images here. A single one-pound block can also support half a ton of weight. NASA continues to find new space-based applications for this incredible material. An aerogel window one inch thick has the effective insulative capacity of a ten-inch thick glass window system. While it is still expensive and has other limitations, this material – originally developed nearly a century ago but still undergoing experimentation – could prove to be one of the most influential materials of the 21st Century. Aside from its other capabilities, aerogel also has amazing absorbing abilities. Some speculate it could be the future solution to oil spills. It is also being tested as a possible slow-release drug deliver system for potential human patients.

Artist Neil Harbisson is completely colour-blind. Here, he explains how a camera attached to his head allows him to hear colour. Until I was 11, I didn’t know I could only see in shades of grey. I thought I could see colours but that I was confusing them. When I was diagnosed with achromatopsia [a rare vision disorder], it was a bit of a shock but at least we knew what was wrong. Doctors said it was impossible to cure. When I was 16, I decided to study art. I told my tutor I could only see in black and white, and his first reaction was, “What the hell are you doing here then?” I told him I really wanted to understand what colour was. I was allowed to do the entire art course in greyscale – only using black and white. I did very figurative art, trying to reproduce what I could see so that people could compare how my vision was to what they saw. I also learnt that through history, there have been many people who have related colour to sound. At university I went to a cybernetics lecture by Adam Montandon, a student from Plymouth University, and asked if we could create something so I could see colour. He came up with a simple device, made up of a webcam, a computer and a pair of headphones and created software that would translate any colour in front of me into a sound. If we were all to hear the frequency of red, for example, we would hear a note that is in between F and F sharp. Red is the lowest frequency colour and the highest is violet. I started using it 24 hours a day, carrying it around in a backpack and feeling that the cybernetic device, the eyeborg, and my organism were completely connected. I haven’t taken it off my head since 2004, except to change the equipment when it breaks. It looks like an antenna that comes out from my head and goes up to the front of my face. At the back of my head there’s a chip which transforms the light waves into sound, and I hear the colours, not through my ears but through my bone. At the beginning I had some strong headaches because of the constant input of sound, but after five weeks my brain adapted to it, and I started to relate music and real sound to colour. I also started dreaming in colour. It has changed the way I perceive art. Now I have created a completely new world where colour and sound are exactly the same thing. I like doing sound portraits – I get close to someone’s face, I take down the sound of the hair, the sounds of the skin, eyes and lips, and then I create a specific chord that relates to the face. I’m starting a sound portrait gallery of famous faces which began with Prince Charles, who came to Dartington...

Explore how it is now possible to stop and restart light. See how technology has advanced to help us learn more aspects of our home – Earth. By William J. Cromie Gazette Staff Two years ago we slowed it down to 38 miles an hour; now we’ve been able to park it then bring it back up to full speed.” Lene Hau isn’t talking about a used motorbike, but about light – that ethereal, life-sustaining stuff that normally travels 93 million miles from the sun in about eight minutes. Less than five years ago, the speed of light was considered one of the universe’s great constants. Albert Einstein theorized that light cannot travel faster than 186,282 miles per second. No one has proved him wrong, but he never said that it couldn’t go slower. Hau, 41, a professor of physics at Harvard, admits that the famous genius would “probably be stunned” at the results of her experiments. Working at the Rowland Institute for Science, overlooking the Charles River and the gold dome of the state Capitol in Boston, she and her colleagues slowed light 20 million-fold in 1999, to an incredible 38 miles an hour. They did it by passing a beam of light through a small cloud of atoms cooled to temperatures a billion times colder than those in the spaces between stars. The atom cloud was suspended magnetically in a chamber pumped down to a vacuum 100 trillion times lower than the pressure of air in the room where you are reading this. “It’s nifty to look into the chamber and see a clump of ultracold atoms floating there,” Hau says. “In this odd state, light takes on a more human dimension; you can almost touch it.” She and her team continued to tweak their system until they finally brought light to a complete stop. The light dims as it slows down, so you think that it’s being turned out. Then Hau shoots a yellow-orange laser beam into the cloud of atoms, and the light emerges at full speed and intensity. Inspired by Hau’s success at slowing light, researchers working on a wooded hill a few miles away at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) used a similar technique to stop, then restart, a light beam. That team was headed by Ronald Walsworth and Mikhail Lukin, both associates of Harvard College. Their success was independent of Hau’s effort. “We didn’t have much contact,” she notes, “just a few e-mails.” Stopping cold Besides stirring a research rush to explore exotic forms of matter, such experiments open the door to some practical applications. These include vastly more powerful computers as well as the possibility of communications that are much more secure from hackers and people trying to steal your credit and bank card numbers. “We hope for wonderful things,” says David Phillips, who worked on the CfA “stop light” project. “Our imagination hasn’t figured out what the possibilities are yet.” Hau, a tall, slender scientist educated as a theoretical...

Half a billion children could grow up physically and mentally stunted over the next 15 years because they do not have enough to eat, the charity Save the Children says in a new report. It says much more needs to be done to tackle malnutrition in the world’s poorest countries. The charity found that many families could not afford meat, milk or vegetables. The survey covered families in India, Bangladesh, Peru, Pakistan and Nigeria. One parent in six said their children were abandoning school to help out by working for food. A third of parents surveyed said their children complained about not having enough to eat. The survey was carried out in the five countries – where, the agency says, half the world’s malnourished children live – by international polling agency Globescan. Continue reading the main story “Start Quote I skip meals so I can feed my [surviving] children. I borrow, I even lie to somehow get money to feed them. Poverty breaks you down but you should be hopeful and strong” Delhi mother who lost two children to malnutrition Hunger in Delhi slums Record food prices Save the Children said that a year of record food prices had worsened child malnutrition and could hit progress reducing child deaths. “The world has made dramatic progress in reducing child deaths, down from 12 to 7.6 million, but this momentum will stall if we fail to tackle malnutrition,” said Save the Children chief executive Justin Forsyth. The agency wants the UK to lead the way in reducing hunger and protecting children from food price rises – starting with a Hunger Summit when world leaders are in London for the Olympics. The UK’s International Development Secretary, Andrew Mitchell, said the charity was right to focus on hunger and malnutrition, and Britain would “continue to urge other countries to match our own efforts in this area”. In its report, Save the Children says that one in four of the world’s children have stunted growth – meaning their body and brain have failed to develop properly due to malnutrition. Eighty percent of stunted children live in just four countries, the charity says. ‘Downward spiral’ Malnutrition contributes to the deaths of 2.6 million children each year, according to the report. Assumpta Ndumi, a nutritionist who works with Save the Children in Kenya, told the BBC’s Network Africa programme that successive droughts are causing a downward spiral there: Justin Forsyth, Save the Children UK’s CEO, wants a global ‘hunger summit’ “When another drought comes and livelihood assets are destroyed it becomes worse for families to be able to feed their children. “Milk is very important for families in north-eastern Kenya, so when livestock is lost they basically have no access to a protein source. “We need to address the hidden hunger because it’s killing silently.” Food prices rose sharply in the first half of last year, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), after severe weather in some of the world’s biggest food exporting countries in...

Swiss scientists plan to develop a machine that acts almost like a vacuum cleaner to scoop up thousands of abandoned satellite and rocket parts, cleaning up outer space. The Swiss Space Centre at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), announced the launch of CleanSpace as the first instalment of a family of satellites designed to clear up space debris. According to EPFL, “16,000 objects larger than 10 centimetres in diameter and hundreds of millions of smaller particles are ripping around the Earth at speeds of several kilometres per second.” “It has become essential to be aware of the existence of this debris and the risks that are run by its proliferation,” says Dr Claude Nicollier, an astronaut and EPFL professor. The space centre says it is moving beyond rhetoric to “take immediate action to get this stuff out of orbit.” Centre spokesman Jerome Grosse says two options are being considered for the cleaning satellites. One is a machine that scoops up debris and then burns itself up in Earth’s atmosphere. The second is a model capable of retrieving the debris, which is then ejected into the atmosphere while the cleaner remains in space. “We want to offer and sell a whole family of ready-made systems, designed as sustainably as possible, that are able to de-orbit several different kinds of satellites,” says centre director Volker Gass. “Space agencies are increasingly finding it necessary to take into consideration and prepare for the elimination of the stuff they’re sending into space. We want to be the pioneers in this area.” EPL cited a 2011 study by Swiss Re insurance company showing that every year there is almost a one in 10,000 chance that an orbiting satellite measuring 10 square metres will collide with a piece of space debris larger than one centimetre.

Mobile devices will outnumber humans this year, according to network firm Cisco’s latest analysis of global mobile data traffic. By 2016 it predicts that there will be 10 billion mobile connected devices around the world. By the same date networks will be carrying 130 exabytes of data each year, equivalent to 33 billion DVDs. Mobile data traffic in 2011 was eight times the size of the global internet in 2000, according to the report. Gigabyte clubThe rise in data consumption is likely to cause more problems for mobile operators already struggling to cope with demand. Currently the average smartphone uses 150 megabytes of data per month but this is expected to rise to 2.6 gigabytes by 2016, the report found. “By 2016, 60% of mobile users – three billion people worldwide – will belong to the Gigabyte Club, each generating more than one gigabyte of mobile data traffic per month,” said Suraj Shetty, vice-president of products and solutions at Cisco. There are various factors that are pushing data consumption ever higher. People are using more tablet devices which are even more data-hungry than smartphones, the report found. According to Cisco, tablet use exploded in 2011 – tripling to 34 million devices, each of which is generating over three times more traffic than smartphones. By 2016 it predicts that tablets will account for more than 10% of global mobile traffic. Streaming videoAnother factor is faster networks. 4G is currently only available for about 0.2% of mobile connections but they already account for 6% of mobile data traffic, the report said. Using mobile data on a 4G connection generates 28% more traffic than a non-4G connection, it found. Apple’s iPhones had a reputation for using up more bandwidth than other handsets but the study found that Android consumption is now equal to, if not higher, to iPhone consumption in the US and Western Europe. Seb Lahtinen, from broadband news site ThinkBroadband, is unsurprised by the findings. “Most of us use a smart phone on trains, but we still struggle to get a good signal. “As speeds and quality increases, more users will start watching streaming videos on mobiles, which is likely to lead to an explosion in mobile traffic growth,” he said.

A Finnish sci-fi comedy about Nazis invading Earth has become the most talked-about movie at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Iron Sky is a B-movie spoof that has been screening at the festival’s sidebar event, called Panorama. The plot revolves around a group of Nazis who escape to the moon at the end of World War II to plan a new assault. Interest in the film has raised eyebrows at the Berlin film gala, which is more used to heavyweight fare. Last year A Separation – a compelling Iranian drama about the dissolution of a marriage – took home the festival’s main prize, the Golden Bear. The 2012 festival has seen the premiere of Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, a film about the Bosnian war. Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt are said to be among the stars who have caught Iron Sky during the screening. The film features a fictional US president, satirically modelled on Sarah Palin Iron Sky’s plot is set in motion in 2018, when a Nazi soldier comes face to face with a US astronaut. Added to the farce is a US President with more than a passing resemblance to former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, and a navy cruiser called the USS George W Bush. Its appeal has been hailed by some members of the international press as a sign that Germans are now at peace with their Nazi past. Yet local journalists are more cautious. “Although I heard that audiences were laughing out loud, in my screening… it wasn’t like that,” said Kerstin Sopke of the Associated Press. “It’s still a delicate subject here, and you have to be really careful how it’s done. I was a little bit wary, but actually I think they did the comedy well. “The inclusion of so much US satire when there is a presidential election campaign was also holding up a mirror to our time.” Iron Sky’s production team have appropriated the conspiracy theory that the Nazis had an advanced UFO project during World War II. However, its director Timo Vuorensola – whose last work was a Star Trek pastiche called Star Wreck – still describes the film as a “stupid joke”. German actor Udo Kier is the best-known member of the Iron Sky cast Most of the funding for the £7m project was obtained after an online appeal to fans. After successfully using the public to generate funding, its producers aim to launch a series of comics and licensed merchandise. The Independent’s Kaleem Aftab has praised Iron Sky, saluting its “over-the-top storytelling at its riotous and enjoyable best”. Yet The Guardian’s Andrew Pulver called it “a giant damp squib” that was “not nearly as funny or cruel as its killer premise suggests”. London’s Time Out magazine agreed with that assessment, calling it “a crude slapstick romp wholly lacking in charm, wit or excitement”. There is no doubt, though, that the film has whipped up an online buzz echoing that generated by another gaudy B-movie...

“Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics. You are all stardust. You couldn’t be here if stars hadn’t exploded. Because the elements, the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars. And the only way they could get into your body is if the stars were kind enough to explode. So forget Jesus. The stars died so you could be here today.”

McDonald require its pork suppliers to get rid of gestation pens that animal-rights groups have long deemed cruel to pigs. McDonald’s Corp. (MCD), the world’s largest restaurant chain, will require its pork suppliers to get rid of gestation pens that animal-rights groups have long deemed cruel to pigs. “There are alternatives that we think are better for the welfare of sows,” Dan Gorsky, McDonald’s senior vice president of North America supply-chain management, said in a statement today, released with the Humane Society of the United States. The company, which uses pork in sausage McMuffins, breakfast platters and McRib sandwiches, will require its suppliers to submit plans by May to phase out the metal cages. McDonald’s is “one of the largest purchasers of pork — bacon and sausage, in particular,” David Warner, a spokesman for the National Pork Producers Council, said in an e-mail. The Oak Brook, Illinois-based fast-food chain buys about 1 percent of the U.S. pork supply, according to Lisa McComb, a McDonald’s spokeswoman. The move comes 11 years after Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (CMG)began requiring its pork suppliers to raise pigs outside or in large cages and use antibiotic-free and vegetarian food. McDonald’s spun off Chipotle in 2006. Gestation cages are typically about 2 feet by 7 feet, too small for a full-sized sow to turn around. Pigs kept in these pens are more susceptible to disease and illnesses such as urinary tract infections, said Paul Shapiro, a spokesman for the Washington-based Humane Society. They also suffer psychologically because pigs are “very social, intelligent animals,” he said. Cargill, Smithfield Cargill Inc., the commodity trader that’s the largest closely held U.S. company, and Smithfield, Virginia-based Smithfield Foods Inc. (SFD) are leading the way in getting rid of the animal enclosures, McDonald’s said in the statement. Cargill is based in Minneapolis. “It’s just wrong to immobilize animals for their whole lives in crates barely larger than their bodies,” Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society, said in the statement. McDonald’s, which has about 33,500 locations worldwide, rose 0.2 percent to $99.65 at the close in New York. The shares gained 31 percent last year. “McDonald’s isn’t going to say this, but we’re throwing away a lot of good things about gestation stalls,” Steve Meyer, the president of livestock and grain marketing consulting firm Paragon Economics in Adel, Iowa, said in an interview. The separate pens keep hogs from fighting with each other, he said.
