Spending Time Wisely as a Family

Scripture warns us against being "idle". Many have heard the saying, "Idle hands are the devil's tools".
Family life has been disintegrating in much of mainstream America, for various reasons and due to many "culprits".

Each day, when we arise, God gives us an opportunity to change those tides...to right our paths and to restore family life in such a way that we grow in holiness, in love, in charity, and in peace and harmony; being led ever-closer to the One who blesses us by making us a family in the first place.

Below, is an excerpt from my book, "I Surrender", from the chapter on "Surrendering Family Life":

God has given each of our families the blessing of time to be together. Do not waste it! Time is something we must surrender to God. We should ask Him to help us use it wisely. It is fitting for Christians to spend some time being still and quiet, simply basking in God’s presence and allowing Him to speak to our hearts.

We do not, however, want to fall into the habit of being idle, where we are not really focusing on God but simply wasting away the hours with mindless chatter or useless activities. Too much time spent this way will render the soul indifferent and will eventually draw it away from “Jesus”
and turn its focus toward “self”.

If we are to die to self and live in Christ then we will surrender our family time to Him. How are we using that time? Are we engaging in good conversation? Are we playing games together, working side-by-side around the house, enjoying the breaking of bread at our tables, or singing and worshiping in our homes?

Or, are we wandering off in all directions, isolating ourselves from one another, taking part in too much texting, too many computer games, and talking on the phone or engaging in personal activity too often so that it leaves the rest of the family out?

Everyone needs a little time to themselves. In fact, Jesus went off by Himself to refresh and rest and pray. (Luke 6:12) Even so, it is not healthy for our family life if we spend the majority of our time away from each other. Surrendering time to Jesus means that we are willing spend time with those whom He has given us to love and share our daily lives.

A few ideas for spending family time wisely:

Take a walk or go for a hike. Being outside together allows us to enjoy God’s creation, breathe fresh air, and get some physical exercise, as well.

Share at least one meal a day together. To gather together ‘round the family table is a blessed and sacred thing. Our Lord, Himself, did this with those closest to Him in His final hours. Meals need not be elaborate or fancy. The main point is just to share this time together. Enjoy one another’s company.

Play some games! Get out that deck of cards that you save for guests’visits, or take the board games off the shelves. Enjoy some old favorites like Twenty-Questions or Charades. Which game you choose is not as important as the time you will spend lightening up the mood, sharing some laughs, and enjoying the company of your own family.

Contentment

Many of us live wishing our present season would pass, but the irony is that with each passing season we will find reasons to want something different or new.

Women need to find contentment in the presence of God; embracing all that has been given and taken as the goodness and mercy of Jehovah.

I'm living lean these days and can recall a time when money was not an issue. Those were good days financially, but spiritually and physically I battled anxiety.

Anxiety weighs a person down, so I did not live with peace or joy and made my husband miserable with many demands.

The demands came in hopes that he could heal the torment in my soul, but it wasn't his place to mend what only God had the power to do. He desperately tried to please me so we could have peace, but in so doing he made matters worse.

A man cannot give in to the demands of his wife. He unknowingly causes her to sink deeper into a state of chaos and madness.

We lost everything as a result of my bidding, and have lived the rest of our time trying to make up for the many mistakes we made.

However, God is the answer at the end of the line; the solid ground who holds balance when we can't look down.

In the midst of having little monetarily I have learned to live in peace with my hands and abilities. I have embraced talents I didn't think I had or could have. I have accepted my spiritual gift as something that God has given not for me, but for edification of the saints.

I am better, but not whole. It is a process of sanctification that means I tame myself for the sake of my family and others. It means I love God and do His will; understanding it is a battle until one day it is not.

It means that I pioneer parent and build the christian family I never had.

It means I let my husband do his job and I do mine.

It means I fall in love with my children and stop complaining. I gird my loins with strength. Proverbs 31.

It means I bow the knee in eternal Eucharisteo.

The Beginning of Wisdom

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,

and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Dear Mama, do you ever feel overwhelmed with all there is to do with a houseful of children? Maybe you homeschool and are faced everyday with the things you did not accomplish that you had hoped you would have. That to do list that never ends, the papers waiting on the counter to be dealt with, the phone calls you were supposed to make yesterday still weighs on you.

And the many things you wish you had done with your children that are still a post-it note in your mind.

Where do you start? Will you ever feel caught up and ahead of the game?

And then there are all of those others mothers you look up to, the ones that you love and respect...and you so wish you could be like them.

But these are the times we need to stop. We need to take a fresh look at our priorities and what is it that God says is most important.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Proverbs 9:10

God's word tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, so this should be the priority in our home.

Sure, there may be a list of things to do that is longer than you want to even admit.

Sure, you wish you had made that recipe, or done that craft with your little ones.

~But, are you teaching them to fear the Lord?
~Have you taken time with them today to seek Him?

If these things are your priority in the home, then all is well, dear sister. For when Christ is the center then all else will fall into place.

So set aside the expectations of men, including your own...and look to Him who is true Wisdom.

Do you have a lot on your plate? I know I do, and my responsibilities can seem extremely overwhelming when I take my eyes off of Jesus.

Sometimes you're on top of the world; other times the world is on top of you, but Jesus is not to be doubted. We cannot give up when our circumstances are weighing us down. We must look to the Rock that is higher than our most difficult situation (Psalm 61:2).

Peter got out of the boat. He was able to do the impossible as long as he stayed focused on Jesus, but once he took his eyes off of the solution, fear began to pull him down.

Challenge:

Read God's word daily starting with 5 to 10 minutes.
Pray without ceasing. If you don't know what to pray, begin praying the Psalms.
Keep a journal by your night table and record your dreams.
Memorize scripture. It helps fight against intruding thoughts as well as give you an understanding of God's power and grace.
Fast if possible. Fasting coupled with prayer is a dynamic duo. Powerful manifestations of God's glory appear when one is fasting and praying simultaneously.

An Unexpected Gift

I had the privilege of spending time with my mother for a couple of days this week. A surprise visit from Florida that was deeply needed.

Mom encouraged me to take her shopping so we could find feminine and elegant apparel. "A woman needs to keep herself stunning," she said. "Mom, you do realize how many children I have, correct?" No excuses, darling - was her simple reply.

I always want to giggle when I see the women standing outside Macy's waiting to spray you with the newest scent formulated by a celebrity that costs $100.00. I'm not sure why I want to giggle, but I compose myself as I get sprayed with something sweet and giddy.

I felt like a kid again as we browsed the store and for a split second I regress. I want to hide between the racks of clothing like I use to when I was 7 years old shopping with a younger mother.

It use to frazzle her so, but I loved small, confined spaces. I would stay hidden and watch the elegant ladies pass by in their high heel shoes secretly wanting to be just like them.

Raw emotions flooded my heart as I spent the day with my mother. Memories coming and going spontaneously; continually. A post cannot completely express what I felt, but somehow she always manages to give me a sense that all is well and life is good.

Tears flowed as I had to say goodbye and I don't know when or if I'll see her again, but it was good to be a child again - even if it was only in my thoughts.

It was my gift; an unexpected tribute.

Overwhelmed

Are you overwhelmed?

Pray

Turning to God first goes against our nature. Do it anyway. Prayer brings the peace of Christ to our minds and spirits. When we are feeling overwhelmed by everything, God shows us what specific areas are the true problem. Ask the Lord to clarify the source of your struggle.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble.” Psalm 46:1

Perhaps you need to learn the practical skills of housekeeping so you can run your home more smoothly. Are you holding a grudge toward someone that is poisoning every area of your life? Maybe you simply need strength from God to say, "No" to others. Wait on God until His peace is yours.

Treat yourself as God would treat you

This means getting a good night’s sleep (or resting regularly, if you have an infant), cutting the sugar and fat out of your diet, taking walks and breathing the fresh air. Our emotions and spirits are housed in a physical body.

Don’t blame the children

God’s word says that children are gifts from Him. Your children may challenge and exhaust you but they are not the source of your problems. If you are not embracing the responsibility of raising your children wisely, you will often be frustrated by them. Seek wisdom and help from others if you need to but don't complain that your problems stem from your children.

Expect great things

God is a mighty God who waits for us to say, “Help me, God! I can’t do it alone.” He sees each act of faithfulness. He understands how hard it is to forgive those who hurt you. He knows that little children are hard work and that you are tired. He is pleased with your commitment to a difficult marriage. Turn to Him when you are overwhelmed.

Hypotonia

Ella has hypotonia which is low muscle tone. Low muscle tone has some disadvantages, but plenty of exercise can help strengthen tone.

The following are examples of exercises and activities we do at home to strengthen Ella's core and physical stamina:

Ella is placed in a circle and handed a 2 pound exercise ball. She is instructed to throw the ball and hit the stuffed animals while maintaining balance and remaining inside the circle.

Keeping balance while throwing the ball strengthens core and helps with proper eye and hand coordination. Also strengthens upper body.

The mirror is placed nearby so Ella can see herself at work and play.

Some exercises include:

Using a large exercise ball we have Ella lean back to pick up a toy while holding her legs. She brings the toy back up to us. We do numerous repetitions moving the object of attention to either her left side or right. We may move the object up higher as Ella comes up from a lying position to extend her reach making it a bit more challenging.

Going up and down a flight of stairs. When Ella reaches the top flight, we have her bend down and pick up an object of interest. If we're working with colors, we ask what color it is before she is instructed to bend down and place object back in box.

We head back down the stairs and as she reaches the bottom flight is rewarded with a brief activity on the iPad. We repeat this process at least 10 times.

Anat Baniel Method. We are working on manipulating certain areas of Ella's body to awaken and stimulate parts of her brain that are somewhat dormant.

Aquatic Therapy has been an incredible blessing in helping Ella strengthen core and build
stamina.

Above - we are performing simple squats which help increase lower body strength.

Below - our physical therapist is helping Ella work her way through the water while picking up items from the bottom walk path and placing it on the edge of pool.

I hope you find this information helpful if you're dealing with a child who has physical difficulties. I hear that Hippo Therapy is another wonderful tool for physical, speech, and occupational challenges.

A woman is most beautiful when she smiles. It enhances her femininity and hands those around her with a warmth that invites them back into her presence.

Children delight in a mother who has a smile and a kiss waiting for them in the morning. A smile changes a difficult day into a more manageable course.

A husband will put his arms around the waist of one who invites him into an embrace with a smile that says, "Yes, I'm here to comfort; I'm here to help."

A smile is a curve that can set a lot things straight.

As a new mother, I had great ambitions to change the world through my children and still do, but weakness has allowed me to take in the fact that God has to first change me.

Being a mother is so sweet and difficult, but then anything worth legacies bring droplets of pain and joy throughout the years to frame you into maturity.

The intoxicating smell of a newborn, the blooming of a bud into a rose, the metamorphosis of boy into man, and the look of your lover when he whispers the diagnosis of a daughter that will sink deep into your soul and make you wild for a moment that will last forever.

I haven't found anything more exhilarating than the touch of womanhood.

Meek and Gentle Mothers

Developing a meek and gentle attitude will bring virtue to you and benefit you as you strive to attain and maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul for the sake of your home, your family, your marriage, and your own good health.

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth." (Matthew 5:5)

Most of us could stand to tweak our personalities a bit in the areas of patience and attitude. A wife and mother with a meek and gentle spirit is truly the heart of a Christian home.

Right about now, you're probably thinking..."Meek and gentle? How can I be meek and gentle with boys who are climbing the walls all day, babies who never sleep, and girls who cry every time they open a Math book...sometimes I just want to scream!"

Well, first you must understand that you are not alone! Many of us have felt like you. Some of us, more times than we care to admit!

Furthermore, believe it when I say ~ it really is possible! If we pray and determine to develop our natures, we can emanate the virtues of a meek and gentle heart...both of which are a tremendous help to a Biblical woman, and mother at home.

Children naturally respond in a positive manner when they encounter calmness, kindness, and generosity of spirit. The mad rush of today's world can reap havoc on our emotional health. We tend to get caught up in the list of things awaiting our attention and can become anxious, impatient, and short-tempered when we feel that we are not keeping up.

Sound familiar?

That’s ok. You are not the only one. But, right here, right now, on this day, you can: Resolve to do something about it!

A mother in good emotional health can enjoy her family life experience all the more! Join me in trying to commit to the following in order to cultivate the quiet and joyful disposition that will help you stay emotionally balanced:

(If you are a woman who can accomplish more when held accountable to another person, then enlist the help of a friend or your spouse who sees you on a regular basis and can offer encouragement and support as you strive to develop the virtue of a meek and gentle heart!)

TRY TO COMMIT TO THE FOLLOWING:

1) I will speak in quieter tones.

2) I will try not to shout when I'm angry.

3) I will go to the room where the person is to whom I wish to speak , rather than shouting a conversation across the house.

4) I will SMILE often.

5) I will embrace the beauty, grace, and elegance of femininity ~ accepting it as a gift and expressing it in the ways that I speak, dress, and act toward my family and others.

6) I will seek out friendships, mentors, and good examples of other women who live or have lived in the past, and have shown themselves consistently to have a meek and gentle spirit...and I will try to learn from them and emulate them in my daily life.

Reflect upon the virtues of meekness and gentleness, and perhaps you'll think of a few more things to add to your list, above.

A wise woman knows how to carry herself in a lively and stimulating conversation. A lady can make anyone feel at ease while talking to them. After leaving a conversation with a godly woman, a person should feel uplifted and edified.

Be Attentive. Looking at the person while they are speaking shows respect and that you're interested in what they are saying. But be careful not to stare someone down. It will only make them feel uncomfortable or intimidated.

It's Not About You. What makes a lady hospitable and friendly? Focus on what others have to say. Ask questions and be genuinely concerned in what they have to say. Know when enough is enough. Too many questions may seem like an interrogation, especially when addressing men.

Address The Person by Name. It is personal and sets people at ease. Let your tone be pleasant and kind. Too much of a good thing can be bad so don't overdo it with the name. You may come off sounding pretentious.

Agree to Disagree. You can do this with integrity. Instead of saying "undeniably" or unquestionably," say, "I understand it to mean..."

Avoid Gossip and Odd Jokes. The difference between a lady and a fool is integrity. Show that you have it. Talking about someone or laughing at their expense is hurtful and will tarnish your personal and professional reputation.

Avoid Discussing Controversial Topics. They lead to irritating differences of opinion and open quarrels which leaves a coolness of feeling between people.

Ladies, it was an honor visiting and reading your amazing and exceptional stories. I found myself thinking it impossible to pick only three Lilla Rose winners, but in the end I did.

As I present my readers with these stories, my prayer is that grace is extended and hearts are lifted.

Jamerrill from Holy Spirit-Led Homeschooling shared a touching story of brokenness and redemption over at The Better Mom.

Grateful for Grace wrote a story about her mother that made me think of my own mother. My mother loved shoes and I often hid out in her closet for hours trying them on.

Different story when your mother decides to give you her shoes because she won't be needing them anymore.

"I feel much too young to be walking in my Mom's shoes."

Give a Girl a Camera and See What Happens

I've been homeschooling since my youngest was three years old, and by God's grace my children are still learning by my hand.

Our children are not perfect nor do I pretend that everyday is a monumental moment of joy, but I am grateful for days when teaching seems effortless and my children love learning.

While driving home recently, I gave my camera to my daughter and told her to snap a few pictures for art class. It was a beautiful day, and we live in one of the prettiest places in America, so she gladly accepted.

She's a young girl with a good eye, and it was a wonderful teaching moment as I noticed how quickly and easily she took to photography.

Keeping my children productively learning while being extremely busy has its challenges, but it's so worth it.

Remember, Mama, you don't have to sit behind a desk to experience extremely phenomenal teaching and learning.

Go out and take in God's creation. It will do you and your children good.

Showing Clients and Subscribers Respect Through Email

A woman knows how to use email fastidiously. She realizes it is a tool to be used and is not a slave to checking it constantly.

Ladies need to show their recipients the same respect they would show them if they were meeting them face to face.

Be concise and to the point. Emails are used to save time so writing an essay is not a good idea. As a general guide, try to keep emails shorter than five sentences.

Use proper grammar and spelling. Each email you send out is a reflection of you. Show your readers respect by proofreading your email before you hit the send button.

Respond within 24 hours. Subscribers and clients write expecting an immediate response. If you cannot respond immediately with an answer to their question or situation, do some research and let them know you'll get back to them as soon as possible.

Make it personal. Address your recipient by name. Add personal touches to your email that will allow you to stand out.

Don't use all caps. All caps indicates shouting. No need to shout.

Eliminate the use of abbreviations and emoticons. You're not a teenager anymore so stop writing like you are.

The Answer of the Tongue

"The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue,
is from the LORD."

Proverbs 16:1

As Titus 2 mothers one of the greatest desires of our hearts is to lead our children rightly in the ways of the Lord. It is a matter of weight upon our souls, and daily upon our thoughts.

But, it is a hard task. It is very hard to lead a little heart that is bend the opposite of the ways of God. And it is a daily battle. A kingdom warfare that we can easily get distracted from.. And there is no rest.

We can train, we can implore, we can speak, listen and pray for our children. But, only God can change their hearts. We are commanded to fill the water-pots with water, but only God can turn the water into wine.

But, isn't it a comfort to know that it is in His hands. That is is not all up to us. For if it were up to us, all our children would be miserably lost.

When one stands back and looks at the immense task: When one holds a newborn babe in arms and begins to take in the vast responsibility we can feel crushed with the weight. But, here is where we must realize and lean up upon the truth all is of the Lord.

For no matter how much we prepare for the things we will speak to our children,

no matter how much we have read to have the right answer for those all important heart questions,

no matter how much forethought we have put into the cultivating that takes place through daily instruction...

The answer of the tongue is from the LORD.

If we are daily leaning, trusting, looking to the Lord for wisdom in our conversations and guidance with our children...He will direct us. He will give us the words to speak at the right time, in the right moment and place.

Sometimes we must be like Nehemiah and send up a flare prayer for the right words to say, but He will give them.

So today, dear sister may you be encouraged to look to the one who made our very tongues to give you the right words for your dear flock as you tend to them.

Dear Lord Jesus, may each mother that reads this today take comfort in the fact that they can look to, rely heavy and solely upon, and trust you with their children. Give us wisdom to speak with the answer of the tongue that is truly from you. Make us wise with our words and guide each one to be full of grace and truth towards our children. In Jesus' name alone, Amen.
