The 3rd Annual Turkey Jamm has gotten the attention of more and more girls’ basketball teams with each year of its existence. This year is no different.

Starting off as largely as a local event showcasing some of the top teams in the state of Tennessee the Turkey Jamm is slowly becoming an exposure force for girls’ basketball teams.

However, local attention was not what the architect of this event was seeking. Demond Hairston of Girl Powher Showcases saw his event as an early season must see event. With perennial talent as Memphis Central, Bolingbrook (IL), Memphis Ridgeway, Memphis Overton, and Potter’s House Christian Academy (Jacksonville, FL) attending his event, Demond has begun to extend the Southern brand of girls’ basketball to other parts of the country.

Innovation has been one tool that Demond has sought to bring to his event making it highly accessible to coaches fans and recruiters. In each of the first two Turkey Jamms Demond and Girl Powher Showcases has brought in FarMar Media Services as their media partner. Using live and on demand streaming solutions Girl Powher Showcases has been able to involve more and more audiences in the viewing of the Turkey Jamm.

However, this was still not enough for Demond. His vision of becoming the event for this time period was no longer satiable as a regional or national event. His thoughts sought something bigger and when China, Hong Kong, China that is, contacted him about sending one of their top teams to the Turkey Jamm he was just blown away.

Danielle Ballard 2012 Memphis Central

Now, all of the credit for this coup can’t go to Demond, his friend and associate, Niki Bray (Memphis Central) was a catalyst in this. The China team enjoyed playing her Memphis Central team so much in Hawaii that they wanted to compete against more of the competetive American trained talent.

In its third year of existence, the Turkey Jamm can now claim itself to be an international house of hoops. Games will begin in the AM as early as 10 am. Due to the increase of teams, geographical location, and the need for greater fan access the Turkey Jamm will be held at Lausanne Collegiate High School in Memphis, TN as opposed to it’s previous site at Memphis Central High School.

So remember, unlike many other events, you can view the Turkey Jamm by coming to the gym or viewing the pay-per-view online. To learn more about your viewing options please visit www.farmarmedia.net or email exposure@farmarmedia.net.

To see the full schedule of the Turkey Jamm visit http://farmarmedia.net. College coaches interested in viewing this event should call (601) 400-0153. This is an in-season scholastic event meeting the NCAA guidelines for video recruiting, and the National Federation High Schools and local high school association mandates for teams traveling in and out of state.

The New PAC-12 announces it new deal with ESPN and Fox. But what many did not figure on was that the PAC-12 was going to hold out some inventory from the deal. In announcing their mega 3 billion dollar deal with the two sports media giants the PAC-12 also announced the start of the PAC-12 Network.

The PAC-12 will own, not lease, six regional channels and one national channels. To pull this off the PAC-12 enlisted cable moguls Comcast, Time Warner, Bright House, and Cox Cable companies to perform the distribution of their network. By maintaining the rights (owning) of the channels this will allow the PAC-12 to keep all of the revenue.

The key move here, however, was the PAC-12 holding back inventory from ESPN and FOX. ESPN, FOX, and the PAC-12 will feature all of the men’s basketball games and football games using a lottery format. Each week the networks will rotate who gets first choice of the game(s) they wish to broadcast. The genius of this is that when the PAC-12 is ready to launch its network (August 2012) they will have valuable content for their audience.

The days of sitting back and waiting to hear from a college scout or recruiter are gone. Athletes of the 21st century must make themselves available for viewing and exposure. College coaches and scouts want to see more and more players and they have less and less time to do so. At FarMar Media Services we would like to assist you with some do’s and don’ts that may increase your exposure opportunities.

Gaining exposure requires several moving parts continuously working together for a common goal, very similar to a team or group activity. Each action is dependent on a previous action or a simultaneous action. When building your exposure portfolio you want to start with the foundation. This foundation should begin with your first year of varsity play at the high school level. College coaches are rebuffed by padded stats from your JV or Freshman level games. Misleading information will eventually come to the light and destroy your crediblity in the process.

Once a Division I coach told me how they watched film on a kid in a high school game. This athlete ran for over 300 yards rushing and had four touchdowns. Instantly this athlete was thought to be very good prospect. However, the Division I coaching staff followed up by contacting the varsity coach to get the schedule of the team in order to come out to watch the team play. They told the coach of the athlete they were interested in and the varsity coach responded by telling the Division I staff that the athlete they were seeking was on their JV roster.

Through no fault of the athlete, the parent had sent in the video, this athlete had lost tremendous amount of credibility with this scouting staff. So be sure that you build your athletic portfolio beginning with the varsity years.

Another important Do is to be realistic of the athlete’s abilities. There are many institutions out there seeking athletes and all of them are not at the Division I level. Sending an athlete off to college is very difficult and is probably one of the first major decisions the athlete will be involved in.

Account for academic ability, what the athlete wants to major in, academic support system at the school, and how far away from home is the athlete capable of being. If the athlete has not been weened from the nest they will not fare well in being a long distance from home.

Coaches, when recruiting an athlete, only have a few person to person visits and a few more evaluation views to determine if an athlete is a good fit for their program. The greatest mistake I have come across when matching athletes to programs is that most athletes and their parents don’t understand that the many must adjust to the one. This means the athletes will make 90% of the adjustments when entering the coach’s program; not the coach making adjustments to the numerous athletes in the program. This does not mean that a coach is unaware of the athlete’s individual personality.

Get yourself several binders and categorized them by topics. One binder should have academic achievements and grade reports. For the purpose of recruiting the grade reports should be semester transcripts (not marking period report cards) . College coaches are only interested in the core grades available at the end of a semester.

Another binder should list varsity level athletic achievements. Team awards, Local paper recognitions, State honors (All State, All Area, All Region..etc.) Scholastic Tournament awards, and so forth. The next binder should include non-athletic activities; e.g. Homecoming Court, Chess Club, Community Services, Usher/Matron at church.

Once you have begun your collection of data for your athlete it is very important how you format this information for viewing by college coaches. Contrary to popular belief, college coaches are not fond of unsolicited mailings (junk mail). The proper use of bullet points and keeping your information to one page is critical in gaining maximum attention from a college coach or recruiter. For some of our clients we use digital media biographies, or create mobile apps which make review convenient for the coach or recruiter.

Lastly, FULL GAME video. When evaluating talent college coaches, scouts, and recruiters want to see raw footage of an athlete. Highlight videos are great for personal websites and profile pages, but are very insignificant for evaluation and recruiting.

With schools around the country starting to enjoy their summer vacations also marks the beginning of numerous summer athletic camps. East Cleveland’s girls’ basketball program after taking a hiatus has begun to rebirth their program with the return of their own basketball camp.

Sponsored by the Lady Cardinals Booster Club, 20 plus young athletes in grades 9 thru 12 were able to attend a 4 days camp held at Shaw High School learning drills & skills to prepare them for the upcoming season. When asked about the effects of the camp on the program girls’ Head Coach Dana Jeter stated, “These girls have the chance to improve in the off-season in the same fashion as our rivals and competition.”

Most of the participants were in the 10th and 11th grades. All of the participants being part of the Shaw girls’ basketball program only gives testament to the youth of the program. Coming off a 10-11 season in Coach Jeter’s first year when the prior season only produced 3 total victories leads to belief that Coach Jeter is moving the program n the right direction.

“The goal is to develop our camp into one of the more featured camps in the area. We brought in FarMar Media Services as a camp specialist to help with the design and coordination of our camp and they came in with some vary innovative drills to help improve skills in both general skill development and specific skill development relevant to our program.” stated Coach Jeter.

After a couple of days of drills the girls were able play in their first summer league game. One thing that Coach Jeter noticed was that she could see the girls attempting to implement some of the drills they were exposed to already. “Their progressive over the past 4 days of camp leaves me very excited and looking forward to the rest of the summer and the upcoming season.” gleamed Coach Jeter.
