“When you’re the person who chases love but runs away from it”

2015-03-02T15:42:00.000+08:00

Written: July 16, 2014
2:48 AM

I’m moving out from the place I have stayed at for almost 2 years and somehow it felt like an end of an era. A lot has happened in my life but a lot had not changed either. As a small girl in the big city, a lot has occurred then but basically, I am still that person who chases love but runs away from it the second I feel that voice behind me saying “Ohhh, there goes that feeling..”

I am the person who prays to God everyday asking for that person whom I can spoon with all night. I am that girl everyone’s blaming because maybe “you’re too picky to get a guy” and feeds me that crap every second I ask why they assumed that BS. I am that girl who dances, flirts, and kisses guys all night; but as soon as they man up to get my digits, I think and act of a lame ass excuse to runaway and successful, I am. That’s my M.O. All those who party with me knows this already, but I know you are reading this because you are my sister/ brother of this familial scene. Yes, you are painfully reading this because you are GUILTY and is wanting to get answers to these excruciating queries: “Why are we like this?”, “Why can’t we find love even if its image is smacking us in the face with a bat?” and “Why do we even have to be innately in tune to someone? Why can’t we just be alone and be content with it?”

Let me start with the last question: You are HUMAN. That’s basically a cliché to hear but the saying “No man is an island”- it is sound- at least psychologically. Erik Erikson popular developmental psychologist has an answer to these cumbersome feelings any 20-40 year old have. You do belong in this phase called the Intimacy vs. Isolation. Being in this stage in your life, the relentless tape playing in your head wants to answer the questions: “Will I be left all alone or will I be loved?” The major conflict lies with us finding that someone who we can share the rest of our lives with, wanting that intimate, secure and love filled relationships. If you don’t find these in this phase, you will feel the adverse effects- feelings of loneliness, sadness and sometimes, depression.

I don’t know about you but I can speak for myself: I don’t need to wait till I’m 40 to feel ISOLATED. At 24, being single for years and years- yes, I am independent. I know that and it is something that I take pride on- I pay my bills, party on my own, can handle a drink and a meeting well at the same time (but not in that order). It’s safe to say I’m self sufficient in almost every aspect of my life- I do things on my own watch and do it in HEELS mind you. I put everything out there in certain aspects of my life and I do it happily during weekdays. Come Saturday, after a night of nonstop partying all over the city, relentless flirting and kissing (sometimes, sleeping around) with strangers you wouldn’t see anymore- a few hours after the alcohol ran off your system- you’ll find your old friend named sadness knocking at your door. Once you’re sober, that’s when reality hits you hard.

So “why are we like this” then? Maybe because of a past love that ruined you and broke your heart into tiny specks? Maybe you dedicated time to pick them up bit by bit and promised never to fall like that again. Maybe you’ve watched too many movies that molded you into this idealistic “Sleepless in Seattle/ Serendipity” person? You believe that you can never fall in love unless there’s some cosmic-slash-destiny shit behind all of it. Or maybe, your heart was never thumped by anyone yet? Just hearing other people talk about how shitty theirs was make you shove love and slam it shut.

Either way, whichever causes you to run away from love- whether it’s fear of getting hurt, investing into something not perfect or fear of letting go- it all boils down to one word- FEAR.

Now, as a person who runs away from love- I ask you to do this with me. : Let’s not be a spectator in our own lives. The more we hide behind this FEAR- the more we give it power. Each day should be dealt with. It might be a roller coaster of emotions with pangs of sadness and happiness in between. But don’t you think everything you have decided upon led you to this very moment? Why not make life worthwhile then? Decide that you will do one scary shit at a time because this will lead to another until it’s not scary anymore. The magical powers fear have over us will soon be over- after reading this- let’s pursue the love that we want to have (depends on where you stand on how you will punctuate its ending- .or , or ! or ?)

Why don’t we make a deal, yes? Next time you hear from me- I will update you on how I conquered this lifelong fear(s). I hope you will have stories to tell as well (I’m pretty sure you will!). Till then...

2013 outfits in a nutshell

2013-12-25T21:10:00.001+08:00

Since I havent blogged in ages, almost all of 2013 because I started my

very first legit job after college early this year (feb to be exact, yayy!),

and im still taking my masters and manage to take on some

heavy loads this year, here are just some of the updates i have to cap off

this wonderful year.

Jan: Started feeling that 'existential vacuum (sorry for the frankl-ish term)'

and looked for a job. Had extensive interviews for various companies until i..

Feb: Started to work for IBM (which was the one i prayed for actually) and moved in to a new place in eastwood (yay!)

March-May: Nothing significant, still getting a hold of my work load both in school and at work.

June: I think this was when our paper for one of our classes in MA was chosen to be presented last Sept 2013 on SG. This was also the time to save up every cent that I can for the conference fee, airfare, hotel accomodations and the pocket money.

July: Still getting by....

August: Celebrated my birthday in Baguio with my Bestest friend Mich, who was relocated there for work. i needed that trip to clear my head off of things and before the SG trip started.

September: Singapore trip finally arrived. Glad we got to share what we learned in our paper and we learned something too from some of the pioneers of the various therapeutic techniques in psych. I was lucky i got a week off from work. Met interesting people, got to shop loads and got lost in the beauty of this country. A week was not enough, though.

October: Glad i survived one of my hardest semesters in grad school and got little blessings in between.

November: Parties everywhere, almost all weekends (starting september, actually..) Met and hanged with awesome people which still continues to this day..

December: Gifts, gifts and more gifts. Happy Holidays and thanks to everyone who showed their love to me..

i love you all! ❤😘😍

Below are pictures that sums the happenings in my life for 2013..

L-R: Baguio, August 2013. Batangas after a night of partying, September 2013, and Clarke Quay, SG Sept 2013

L-R Chinatown, SG- Sept 2013. Eastwood, November 2013. Baguio, November 2013. Bed Mandaluyong, November, 2013.

L-R Eastwood, October 2013. Changi Airport, SG, Sept 2013. Nangyang Girls HS, SG, Sept 2013. Bugis Street, Sept. 2013.

L-R: Eastwood, Nov. 2013 & Dec 2013. Republiq, Dec. 2013.

How did your 2013 turn up? I hope it rocked as much as mine did!

XO ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Alis volat propiis..

2013-07-09T09:41:00.001+08:00

Before graduating from college, Marion and I decided to get tattoos of special meaning to us. But we never pushed through; I was afraid it will hinder something in med school then. Excuses, excuses.

Now that I am almost 24 (in a couple of weeks), Just last July 4th, I decided to do something that will liberate me, literally.

I've considered myself as a very independent woman. I've been living independently since I was 19 and the support and love I get from my family and the people around me is essentially why I am who I am.

I stumbled across this latin quote 'Alis volat propiis' just last 2011 and then on, I have decided that this is the perfect quote that captures my life and the in betweens.

"She flies with her own wings" is its direct translation in english. I feel like this encapsulates my life and it's 3 forms: the past, present and future.

A bird like every living creature starts as a fragile being; weak, vulnerable, helpless.

Then in its proper time, the flightless little bird slowly molds itself to what its destiny is; to fly with its own wing.

As it soars high, it learns that life is full of up's and downs, but it never breakaway from its calling to sail through life; tearing hindrances apart.

This tattoo is a tribute to my (almost) 24 years of falling, standing up and breathing in between life's gracious moments and uplifting extremes;

It is with great pleasure that I will keep this in me forever.

thank you thank you Miah from Sin City Tattoo Studio in Katipunan for this great work! You know where to go and get your tattoos now, loves!

MILKSHAKES

“Daydream, delusion, limousine, eyelash
Oh baby with your pretty face

Drop a tear in my wineglass
Look at those big eyes

See what you mean to me
Sweet-cakes and milkshakes
I’m a delusion angel, I’m a fantasy parade

I want you to know what I think
Don’t want you to guess anymore

You have no idea where I came from

We have no idea where we’re going

Lodged in life, Like branches in a river

Flowing downstream, Caught in the current
I’ll carry you, You’ll carry me

That’s how it could be

2012-08-21T22:36:00.001+08:00

In the Philippines, 2 holidays coincided to happen this monday and tuesday so in total,4 days were considered as long weekend.. ;)

Since my relatives from canada are here for their summer vacation,

we all decided to head to enchanted kingdom, an amusement park (that has been around since i was 10, i think? since that was the last time i went there.. haha) & one of the most popular destinations for kids and kids at heart here in the country..
And then our next stop(s) were in tagaytay- where the famous taal volcano/lake resides and talisay, batangas; where the heart of taal is seen up close.

I just love me some road-slash-boat trip baby! ^_^

catch this film:

1. Channing tatum and the rest of the SIZZLING gang (Matt Bomer, anyone?)

experience as a male stripper)

Negativity on a positive note

2012-07-03T21:00:00.002+08:00

Pessimism has always been the shadow

behind our backs waving back and forth,

singing melancholic tunes tempting to

catch our attentions.

Sometimes it comes with faces, literally.

It may be people who walk in your life:

unabashed, unapologetic, and unsympathetic.

Those who do not give a damn about

any word you say or don't really

give a shit on what you may offer.

I'm in my early 20's and I have loved pessimism

since the day i was born.

It is a state where in it's much easier to get a

hold of things, grasp the idealism that

where you are is not merely your fault and jeopardy about

your miserable life is a position you couldn't comprehend.

I totally agree.

We've been fed by society that what we were born

with is something beyond our control and

sometimes, even if we try, we still fall flat.

Bottom line: We are all afraid to fail.

But if you go as far as examining yourself,

what did that first failure left you?

During college, when that algebra professor you hated so much

and wanted to kill badly gave you a failing mark,

did it shatter you to pieces?

Your parents shaped you to be like them but you

chose to take on a different path. Your brothers and sisters,

earn more than you do and are more successful than

you are, does that make you the bad seed of the family?

Or that first love letter that took months and

a lot or courage to make;

wherein you poured every single feeling you

can possibly write down,

and he said he just wanted to be friends with you.

Did it make you vow not to fall in love again?

Pessimism never really muttered

anything purposively.

Imagination is better than knowledge.

And we know pessimism.

We breathe pessimism.

What if for once, we try to fight it?

What if we try to ward it off with

good thoughts and happy memories?

What if we bury pessimism away knowing

that something good is always

waiting in every heart wrenching,

soul ruining, ego destructing circumstance?

What if we dare to look forward to life's

good grace every damn morning?

What if we say thank you just once?

I say do it.

Stare failure directly in the face then smack it with a bat.

You can only do so much in so many different ways.

If you did your best, let it go.

Let the universe conspire into giving you things

you've never dared to dream.

In the process, smile with all your intestines.

And know that they are there

to keep your GUT in place. :)

La la land..

Faces crumbling through a familiar pavement

Grinning from ear to ear she thought of unrequited moments

Life for her has always been a bittersweet sonnet

And today, she felt that peering bliss finally resonate

A pen seemed to be her only weapon

Quips made before this day has led to more confusion

Inadvertently realizing there are no more questions,

She was the sole bearer of such iridescent actions

Swallowing all that scent of jovial elation

She pulled her hair back and put her heels on.

Back to School!!

It is time for SCHOOL!

Starting today (for some), we bid farewell

to our summer vacay & welcome back the rainy season and

SCHOOLING of course!

In lieu to school and everything else,

I decided to wear this pretty top that I got a couple of months back

that says "PRINCESS" with all its gold glory.

I decided to pair it with a bubble skirt jumper that I got years ago

(if my college classmates still remember me wearing this during our retorika class) that screams 'little school girl'

because it totally reminds me of our pre school uniform!

I wish i had socks on though.. Sayang!

TOP TEN MOVIES THAT MIRRORS LOVE IN ALL FORMS.. ♥

2012-05-07T22:40:00.001+08:00

10. Everyone says I Love You

One of the less popular Woody Allen films, Everyone says I love you is full of scenes that are “almost in the clouds” with all the singing around New York parks and dancing in Paris; it mirrors how people do utterly crazy things and what it looks like when they fall in love. The film never forgot to remind the viewers that behind a family with a perfect façade, life is crappy most of the time yet still, it’s up to us how we’ll make it work in the end. Everyone says I love you is never wary of putting sudden “glee-like moments” every now and then. I love that scene when woody allen seduced Julia Roberts in every way possible. Of course, she left her husband and lived with him in Paris. But eventually, like spoiled kids could swear on this: She got bored getting everything in a snap. And left him to go back to her husband. Funny right? The juxtaposition of the situations and characters are just well put plus those story lines, perfecto! I remember watching it end and said: “This is such a WEIRD film!”and laughing myself off afterwards. Plus the fact that Drew Barrymore and Ed Norton sings beautiful lines of love about each other, didn’t hurt either. Seriously, watching this film will certainly make the songs here your LSS.

9. The painted veil

Another film starring Ed Norton, it gives us a glimpse of love LITERALLY in the time of CHOLERA and catastrophe. I don’t know about you but I’ve always been told that if the guy loves the girl more, the relationship is always bound to be successful. I saw that in this film. Ed Norton’s character fell madly in love (at first sight) with Naomi Watts. Remember in the early 1900’s, marriages are almost always fixed and that’s what’s evident here. The guy is madly in love with the girl, asked her to marry him and promised the world will revolve around her. The girl obviously not head over heels for him met her ideal guy in the form of another married man, had an affair, got caught, asked him to leave his wife for her and ultimately, got both of their hearts: her husband and her’s shattered into pieces. As an ultimatum, Ed Norton asked her to accompany him to china where an outbreak of cholera exists and a bacteriologist like him is badly needed. If she will not come with him, he will divorce him on the grounds of her sleeping with another man. In china, where death is eminent and their love is slowly fading, will they be able to rekindle a romance that was never there? A twist of fate and feelings made sure the audiences will fall deep into how great their love is even if sometimes, it sinks in a little late.

8. One day

I was in a Bookstore earlier and saw this David Nicholl’s book with a line reading: “20 years, 2 people.” I remember when I first heard of this novel way back and saw it in film almost a year ago, the premise had always made me wonder. Friends then lovers? Lovers then friends? Which comes before the other? It has always been a puzzle, these two. I just love how this film takes us to the journey where every relationship, whether friendship or love starts, connection. Emma and Dexter met and almost had an intimate relationship that night of their graduation which happens to coincide with St. Swithin's Day on July 15th, yet somehow being best friends seemed more fit. From then on, year after year on that same specific date they are virtually present in each other’s lives whether they are physically far from each other. Years passed and they’ve been in relationships, Dex is married with a kid, Emma is engaged with another man yet somehow that CONNECTION never grew pert. That same connection will lead them to a life full of highs and lows and each circumstance will make you wonder if being together is in the cards for these two. And it brings a better question in mind: does friendship and romance promise a happy ever after?

7. Beginners

If you remember, I made a movie review about beginners just in time for the Oscars because I am just in love with this movie! Beginners emphasized the two faces of love which matters most: Love for a parent and Love for someone you can spend the rest of your life with. Like what I said in my review before, the film lets the audience take a peek on what one experiences when a parent is on the verge of demise &; never lets us forget that LOVE, whether with a man or a woman, or man with a man ultimately has the same face, a face of utter bliss. I just love that this movie did not talk of a conventional love; it featured acceptance and authenticity even when life is at its hardest.

6. The Truth about Love

I’ve seen this movie for ages and only now did I appreciate the premise it talks of: A love so near yet so far. If I speak about how this premise became obvious in the film, you would not need to see it because it’s the whole story, really. But I loved the fact that the movie is so subtlety optimistic stating the obvious that even if your get your heart smashed into pieces by one person, you’ll never really know what can happen next or who are you really meant to be with. And the underlying statement really is, If he is such an asshole to you, why do you need to stay? Another thing, I just love seeing Jennifer Love Hewitt with a British accent (Remember, If Only?).

5. A Single Man

Colin Firth & Matthew Goode kissing? That alone made this movie a must watch for me. Set in the 1960’s the film shows us how a man lived his last day on earth since he decided that in a few hours, he will commit suicide. A little existentialist yet still lovely, I love loved the play of colors; it made me think that since it is his last day on earth, He saw everything more beautifully & alive; every color, form, and people seemed more vivid. Flawless cinematography, really. I put this here because I am a fan of stories that crosses the usual girl-boy dynamic. Such relationships never fail to warm my heart because it is LOVE. Love captured in a genuine form. The movie examines his life as a professor; how hard it is for him since his partner for 16 years died in an accident, his family not wanting him to attend his funeral, and how hard it is to be gay back in the 60’s which drove him to the route of loneliness. Through the course of his last day, little by little, hope is kicking in. The question is will he get his wish to be reunited with his true love through taking his own life?

4. Once

“How often do you find the right person?” was this films catchy line written in the poster. Before i get to that, I just want to say that this film never seizes to amaze me. It lets us taste the reality of how life is for a struggling artist to catch people's attention in the streets & the stories behind each person who sings that genuinely. And back to that, How often do we find the right person? Brought together by their love for music, two people find themselves captivated by each other's life experiences and backed up by chemistry. These two seemed to be a perfect fit. But she is married.

What shall he do? Full of passionate hymns and beautiful melodies,

once is a definite jewel waiting to be discovered.

And I challenge you to not fall in love with the song "FALLING SLOWLY", seriously. I DARE YOU.

3. Everybody’s Fine

Personally, I believe there is no greater love than what our parents give us. They saw us growing up with our little tantrums to being a rebellious teen full of snide comments and angst. I remember seeing this film when I was living on my own a couple of years back and was just sobbing nonstop when it ended. The movie talks of how it is for a parent who has grown children to have that connection and communication like it was when they were kids. It shows the depth of being a parent, accepting your kid for who they are behind all the façades they would like you to see and still loving them for exactly the way they are.

2. Like Crazy

I am sooo in love with this movie! Let me just state that.

Like Crazy is a film that shows us how hard and real it is to have a long distance relationship THAT WORKS and how it is when it does not work. The gorgeous irony of the movie, the reality of having the government against you if you violated the terms of your visa or how challenging it is to be separated from the one you love and how grueling it is to feel that longing inside you because you're worlds apart. It made me wonder,

does distance really matter when it comes to love?

This movie talks of young love, distance, and longing as its number 1 antagonist. And eventually, does love really conquer all? After years of being separated, will the flame of love still breathe fire?

Or will it fizzle out?

1. Paris, Je T'aime

Now this really is the ultimate film that reflect love in all forms.

18 spots in Paris (Arrondissements of Paris) brought about 18 various stories of love consisting almost all of the possible premise of love I talked about in the 9 movies above and some more.

If you haven't seen this film yet, i suggest you grind your teeth unto this movie as soon as possible. One of the stories of love might probably in the offing for you.

The part that i love here is Le Marais (The fourth story) and almost all of them essentially!

The story in Le Marais showed us a brief encounter of 2 people, one of which spoke in beautiful french of how he believed that the two of them are destined to meet and that he is his soul mate. He gave him his phone number and left the shop. The only problem is, the other guy knows only a little french

and did not understand what the other guy is talking about. But at the end of the scene, he ran down the street leaving everything up in the air.

As you all know, I am a movie fanatic so I really hope you guys enjoyed this list that I made. If you haven't seen any of these yet, be sure to catch them soon and I hope you hearts

will feel the warmth.. ♥ :)

To Lola Ligaya

2012-04-08T23:45:00.002+08:00

This holy week was a sad one because

one of mom's closest friend (which mom

considers her second mom & us our pseudo grandma)

passed away at the age of 73 from complications

during her Cholecystectomy(Gallstones removal)
which resulted to multiple organ failure.

Since I can remember, Lola Ligaya

was one tough woman;

She had 5 kids who are all successful in their own rights,

She was so direct to the point to tell me and my brother

to lose weight since we were kids,

she cooked & lived by herself since her husband died

& beneath all that is a genuinely compassionate

grand mother who sew most of my shorts when I
was at my FATTEST state during grade school.

I remember last Holy Wednesday

when she was still lucid (hours before the surgery),
her daughter told my mom that she really

considered us to be one of her apos (grandchildren)
and of course, she talked to me wherein
she reminded me again to lose weight
and snag a boyfriend soon.. haha:).

She asked us if we know people who had the
surgery before. We knew a couple
who survived the seemingly routine procedure,
and assured her that she will turn out fine.
That's the last conversation we had
with Lola Ligaya.

I wrote this blog in behalf of my family
as an owe of heartfelt
gratitude and sincere fondness of
a life lived which such vigor
and generosity that ascertains her
place up there in heaven.
