TOKYObay, a San Francisco based fashion accessories brand in its 20th year has teamed up with noted fashion blogger Laura Ellner of www.ontheracks.com to show off the brand's main line and choose her favorite 2012 watch and bag accessories for a fashion photograph and video editorial. Shot in an old canning factory in the industrial area of SOMA in San Francisco, the photographs feature TOKYObay accessories styled by Laura with clothes from her own wardrobe. With the sparse concrete storehouse as the backdrop, the fashionable looks of Laura Ellner and TOKYObay stood out.

TOKYObay and Laura filmed a two part video "Passing Time", which features Laura as a stylist and model wearing key pieces from the TOKYObay watch and bag line. The first part launched in February and the second part will launch in April 2012. Laura wore items from her wardrobe that compliment each piece from the TOKYObay collection, giving a wearable and individual take on the brands retro inspired watch and bag line.

The video not only captures the varied emotions and moods of passing time and the casual, urban style of Laura, but the TOKYObay designs are beautifully showcased, exhibiting range in design and product offerings. One would have to see the TOKYObay website for the full collection of accessories; for example, the women's watch styles alone have over 200 style and color options. However, the video nicely captures a few of the popular styles that are a great compliment to every woman's wardrobe.

The trends represented in the first winter 2012 video that just launched includes "women's 'boyfriend' styles" and "sophisticated day and evening workwear." TOKYObay watches are the perfect addition to the slouchy, yet sexy look of the men's "boyfriend" look with the styling of the leather band watches and nostalgic pocket time pieces. The sophisticated workwear sequence shows how the wrap watches adds a sassy elegance to modern day professionalism.

When asked about the advertising campaign with TOKYObay, Laura commented "I got to pick and choose from dozens of amazing accessories and work them into different outfits - pretty much like a kid in a candy store. The garment doesn't wear the woman, but the woman dictates what looks good.

People attending a runway show are on the lookout for fashion. Sometimes what is worn off the runway can catch more attention than what is on the runway. The front row at fashion shows get a lot of attention from attendees and photographers alike because it's within eye-sight and lens range of the runway models. From the current fashion weeks that happened in London and New York City, here are some tips to look fashionable in the front row:

1) Wear eye-catching shoes. If the whole outfit as a mute color, wear colored shoes to add extra splash. High heels and boots are always a top choice for fashion show attendees. If sitting in the front row, shoes that standout add a great visual for the runway sidelines.

2) Wear funky sunglasses or eyeglasses. However, if the person wearing them doesn't know what they're for, it might come across too pretentious.

3) Put on those prints. Whether they're animal prints, plaids or graphics, they'll make a statement and standout in the sea of solids.

4) Wear what's trendy now. Someone can never go wrong with wearing a trendy fashionable outfit that is in style now.

5) Wrap yourself in luxurious coats. Wearing a beautiful coat makes a lasting impression on the outfit as a whole.

6) Wear that red lipstick proudly. Red lipstick is always a standout in any setting.

7) Look fashion forward or outlandish. This always works in getting attention and can push one's fashion boundaries.

8) Put that cell phone away. A cell phone can be such a distraction during a show. Save the discussion for another time or if photo taking, ask one of the professional photographers to e-mail you their pictures from the show. Then sit back and enjoy the show.

9) Coiffe that hair. It's always a shame to see someone wearing an amazing outfit, but they didn't comb their hair. Front row fashion can even go beyond grooming by doing special styling with the hair.

10) Look fashionable and comfortable. Short skirts or dresses are always attention getters, however they can be uncomfortable when wearing this in the front row for and trying to prevent people from getting a free peep show. If wearing a short skirt that is a must, remember to cross the legs at the ankle. This is a comfortable, elegant way to sit and prevents an uncomfortable and dreadful reveal.

Above all else, wear a confident, positive attitude and enjoy oneself. Style always comes from the inside out. An uptight, pretentious person at a fashion show stands out like a loose hem on the runway. Enjoying the runway show with style is the best thing someone can do to polish off their look off the runway.

Fashion Awakening at the "Supreme Beings" avant-garde fashion show

Concept, culture and couture will take center stage at the "Supreme Beings" fashion show on Thursday, March 1st, 2012 at the SOMArts Cultural Center in San Francisco. Local fashion designers Ilanio and Elena Slivnyak will debut their newest collections, bridging haute couture and radical exploratory fashion - making Lady Gaga look like a red tag day at Bloomingdale's.

Bay Area enthusiasts and art lovers will enjoy an evening of high-concept designs by Ilanio and IIMUAHII, as well original music by SpacEKraft and two short improvisational performances by "Butoh" (contemporary, Japanese) dancers.

Ilanio began designing in 2004 as co-founder of Ilaniowear. After five years, he started to find the retail world constrictive and embarked on a bold new fashion experiment: to create "visually stunning fashion concepts that explicitly disregard wearability, saleability, and practicality; that embrace advanced definitions of sexuality and gender; and that defy the commercially-mandated boundary between the fashion and art worlds." Ilanio has collaborated with numerous talented San Francisco artists, both in the fabrication and presentation of his work and with underground shows involving experimental music and dance.

Elena Slivnyak is the Ukrainian-born, Academy of Art trained designer behind the avant-garde collection, IIMUAHII. Her passion for high fashion is manifested in her collection with abstract textures, extreme structures, and an overall novel aesthetic. After her first taste of the corporate fashion world, with its focus on high volume and uniformity, she redirected her creative energy toward creating much more intricate and finely crafted garments. Elena has worked with celebrity stylists and record labels as a costume designer for aspiring stars; participating in video shoots, magazine editorials and live performances. She has been featured in numerous publications, including Asterik, 944, Prestige, and Essential Homme.

This very nontraditional fashion show will begin at 7:00 pm and end at 9:00 pm, featuring two runway shows and eight looks from each designer. There will be open seating at the event. People are encouraged to purchase tickets early, as the event is expected to sell out. This is an event you won't want to miss!

In what has become a celebrated Valentine's Day tradition, San Francisco fashion designer Alexandria von Bromssen is hosting her fifth annual LoveSick runway fashion show entitled "Clinically Attracted", dedicated to those who can't commit to getting committed. The festivities start at 7:00 pm, which include a performance from the band The Goldenhearts, a live model jewelry installation, a trunk show and a photo booth. This is the perfect opportunity to buy your sweetheart an item of her choosing and a get a memorable photo of the evening. San Francisco architect turned fashion designer Wen Guo is transforming fashion with Boditecture, her collection of convertible ready-to-wear clothes. Featured in SF’s Fashion Week this past fall, she has developed a name for herself in a short time, most recently reaching an audience of 2 million plus with a Fab.Com flash sale of her convertible scarves.

Each piece she develops can be worn in multiple ways, transforming the wearer into entirely different looks. Most people would say that the garment gives the most “bang for the buck”, as one design is actually “eight outfits in one”. Boditecture lets the wearer have the opportunity to broaden their creativity and become their own best stylist!

The runway shows of her collection have received high acclaim from the fashion community in San Francisco, with most people amazed at the ease it takes a model to switch from one look to another, right before their eyes. There’s no need to run into a dressing room and take off a piece here and there. The clothing can be unhooked, snapped, undraped or flipped into a different look.

What sets Boditecture apart from other designers’ convertible fashion is that it elevates this styling by going beyond simple draping a piece of fabric to create various looks. With thoughtful construction, Wen has architect clothes with sleek, flattering lines and ingenuous features. Her latest collection introduces the use of magnets to replace all buttons and snaps.

In reference to her inspiration for this idea, Wen said “As an Apple fan, I was reading Steve Job's biography recently and was fascinated with his minimal approach in product designs, especially the magnetic feature he used in connecting different devices together. I always want my convertible design to have a dramatic effect from one style to another, so I was inspired by him and started to play with magnets. After some exploration, it seems to work very well in some designs, so I replaced all buttons and snaps with magnets.”

Her new innovative collection will be premiered at the “Fashion for Hope” show on February 4, 2012 at Temple (540 Howard Street, San Francisco) from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. This promises to be a unique experience as models are magically transformed by the magnetic Boditecture designs.

When asked what keeps her inspired and motivated with her designs, Wen said “After I showcased my Spring/Summer 2012 collection in San Francisco Fashion Week, I started to approach stores and buyers and never got any response. After a couple months of trying, I was about to give up and head back to my architecture field - at least I would have pay check! However, this past November, a friend suggested I produce scarves for the winter months. I started designing scarves and it suddenly opened a lot of doors for me. Fab.com just launched a Boditecture scarves sale to 2 million users and other e-commerce retail sites have approached me too. So hopefully Boditecture will keep growing so I won't have a chance to head back to architecture.”

Von Bromssen will showcase her latest edgy, fashionable ready-to-wear collection in the highly anticipated runway show along with local designers Amy Fink, Miranda Caroligne, Kathleen van der Spek, Rebecca Roman, Josie Adele, Benzo Couture, Velvet & Horns and Danielle Pettee. To top it off, the event will also have live music from The Goldenhearts and a special performance by artist Bad Unkle Sista. Vintage clothing has grown in popularity, going from "thrift" and "secondhand", to being considered top fashion in its ability to complement contemporary styles to great effect. This is due in part to the increased visibility of vintage clothing as worn by top models and celebrities, such as Chloe Sevigny, Kate Moss, Tatiana Sorokko and the Olsen twins, Mary Kate and Ashley. Vintage pieces are also important because they have influenced later designers and continue to inspire current designers. The increased interest in vintage is also due to its environmental sustainability in terms of reusing rather than throwing things away.

The accessibility and ease of shopping vintage has been made easier through vintage pop-up shops that carry a range of clothing that has already been carefully selected for both quality and fashionability. This weekend, Erin Weinger and Renee Shaab of LA based pop-up shop Pretty Genius is bringing their collection of vintage to San Francisco for a special one-day sale in the Mission. We had a the opportunity to find out more about the vintage pop-up shop through Erin and what sets them apart from others.

FF: How did Pretty Genius start?
Erin: We held our first sale in January of 2011 after a late night conversation about what we wanted to do with our lives. I literally asked Renee (who I had gone to Indiana University
with) "What job wouldn't feel like a job to you?" and she replied, "vintage shopping." And we decided to host a sale right then and there.

FF: Why the pop-up shop concept versus having a store front?
Erin: The pop-up concept makes more sense for us than a store for a few reasons — low overhead, for one. Plus we both have full time jobs — I'm a journalist who publishes the L.A.-based fashion website StyleSectionLA.com while Renee works as a luxury hotel account manager. We started this as a fun passion project that, excitingly, has started to take on a life of its own. Its so great for us to be able to invite our friends and clients to our events once a month and have them see all of the new merchandise we’ve sourced, rather than us having to stand around a shop and wait for business to come in. The excitement that we see in our customers really fuels our own passion for Pretty Genius.

FF: Describe the shopping experience people can expect at the pop-up sale?

Erin: Our sales are casual, comfortable and cozy and feel like an informal closet-raid at one of your friend's houses. There's no pressure, we have music playing and plenty of food and cocktails. Even our friends who loathe vintage clothes end up hanging out for the day, drinking our booze and enjoying themselves a lot.

We carry clothes that feel timeless and unique, and we try to source goods that will help our customers feel confident while wearing them. We like pieces that make us giddy because of a special detail — whether it's a ruffle on a 1970s silk shirt or a piece of fringed velvet on a belt — we like to sell items that can't be found anywhere else. We're both obsessed with dresses, so those who stop by will find those for sure. But we also have some pretty amazing skirts (think leather, silk, suede, etc.) in various lengths, fantastic blazers, caftans, quirky and cozy sweaters and literally a wall of purses.

And yes, there's plenty of expertise here. My partner Renee is amazing when it comes to working with clients and urging them to be daring in the fitting room — 9 out of 10 times she's right on the money when it comes to styling our customers in pieces that they might otherwise overlook. While I have worked in fashion for years, first as an intern for an Indie fashion label in college and later as a fashion writer for the LA Times and a contributor to Elle.com, Style.com, Los Angeles Magazine, Angeleno and of course on my own website, StyleSectionLA.com. I do digital branding consulting for fashion brands, and have also produced photo shoots for my website as well as Entrepreneur magazine and styled the City of Newport Beach 2011 Visitors Guide. My grandmother was a hat designer and my grandfather owned a popular Chicago women's boutique, so I like to think that style is literally in my blood.

FF: Why the expansion from Los Angeles to San Francisco?
Erin: We decided to expand for the simple reason that we are both obsessed with San Francisco! No joke. When I'm bored, I look at Victorian houses in Pac Heights that I would die to be able to afford one day. And I think we both would love to live in the area one day in the future. Since we both have a lot of friends here that have been really supportive of Pretty Genius, we decided that this was the perfect weekend to take a road trip and test out a new market!
