I've been curious about what has been going on in the SF fashion scene. Here are some events I stumbled upon that are happening this weekend in the Bay Area. I'm for sure checking out the sample sale at Skunkfunk, pre-49ers playoff game against the Packers, and will be bundled up in my red and gold fashion for the game. Whatever you do this weekend, enjoy in in style!

FRIDAY

FAZE Apparel Art Show, Friday, January 11, 2013, 3236 21st Street, SF, 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Faze Apparel store is hosting an art exhibit by talented local artists Alexander Suelto and El Chavi with a clothing sale of Faze's fine offerings. Shop, mingle, enjoy the free beverages and appetizers, and make sure to enter the raffle for the in-store paintings that will be produced by the artists that evening; the proceeds from the raffle will be donated to YMCA for kids art programs.

Hot Couture, Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12, 2013, The Crucible, 1260 Seventh Street, Oakland, 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm

The Crucible in Oakland is bringing back Hot Couture! The evening will be a fusion of fashion and fire entertainment. Designers featured include Alexandria Glowaski, Annamarta Doustourian, Avant Vouge, "Bonde, Erin Mahoney and O'Lover Hats", Coyote Cuonter Collective, Heather Wakefield, Jeaneen Brunck Designs, Latex Fashionistas and SENSOREE Design Lab. It promises to be an interesting night - what other fashion show would you be able to see a performer on a fire-breathing violin? Cost of tickets range from $30 to $75. Standing room only and it's in the Crucible warehouse - so women, wear you highest comfortable heels and bundle up!

This is a mixer for anyone interested in participating in The Pink Gown fashion show happening on February 9th - a fashion event to raise money for breast cancer charities. Come mingle and and meet the organizers and find out how you can contribute to an event for a great cause.

What better way to start a Saturday morning than with an awesome sample sale! Funky fresh international Spanish retailer SkunkFunk is having a two-day sample sale at both their San Francisco locations to clear through inventory. I recommend getting there early to score the best items. Women's, men's and accessories! Based on Yelp reviews, I would hit up the Haight location.

Bloomingdale's "Little Red Bag" - Fierce!

Year of the Snake Limited Edition Pop Up Shop Launch, Saturday, January 12, 2012, Bloomingdale's, 845 Market Street, SF, 10:00 am to 10:00 pm

Bloomingdale is ringing in the year of the snake with a line-up of special in-store events and goodies from January 7th through February 18th. A special pop-up shop will feature unique fashion pieces and home items that celebrate the Chinese culture. Brands featured include Baccarat, Christofle, Chronicle Books, Carmen Marc Valvo Couture, DCI, Fox, Salvatore Ferragamo, Kenneth Jay Lane, Riedel and many more. Clothing Swap - Green Saturdays @ Bernal, Saturday, January 12, 2013, Bernal Meeting Room, 500 Cortland Avenue, 2:15 pm to 4:15 pm

Out with the old, and in with the old. The SF Public Library is promoting sustainable living through this special clothing swap event. No cost to attend, just bring some items to swap for other items...and please make sure to practice good swap etiquette. The items should be clean, in good condition (no stains or rips) and a fashion treasure you can pass onto someone else to enjoy. No cost to attend.

United-Taken Fashion Show, Saturday, January 12, 2013, Qi Ultralounge, 917 Folsom St., SF, 9:00 pm to 2:00 am

Urban streetwear brand United-Taken will be the featured on the catwalk at the Dolce & Ayman's Black Orchid event at Qi Ultralounge. Clubs don't pick up till after midnight anyways, so break in the evening with an 11:30 pm fashion show featuring 10 models styled up by Mystie Rodriguez. Perfect place to start the Saturday night club hopping.

SUNDAY

Flash Mob Fashion Show, Sunday, January 13, 2013, Union Square, 333 Post Street, SF, 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Perfect your catwalk stomp at the Union Square fashionable flash mob event! Check the Facebook invite for exact timing, as for now it's schedule for around 2:00 pm. Models wearing designs by Rebecca Cahua will be sashaying across a concrete runway while other participants will be going wild, dancing, hollering and all that other stuff they do at those flash mobs. All are encouraged to attend and participate.

Happy New Year fashionistas! I hope everyone has a fabulous, healthy and prosperous 2013! In reflecting on the past year, some of my favorite fashion moments of 2012, in no particular order:

1. Helmut Lang 2012 sweater collection. My favorite designer sweater collection of the last year, which I shopped a lot this past Fall - innovative knitting techniques and mixture of yarns resulting in kick-ass designs. Sweaters don't need to be bulky and plain to keep a woman stylish and warm through the winter.

2. Makeup Forever Flash Color Case - a tip from a local makeup artist and fashion photographer lead me to the Makeup Forever collection. Vibrant colors, long lasting wear - just what a fashionista needs to pizazz up her look. (shopping tip: the online Sephora site offers special discounts on the Flash Color Case).

3. Camaraderie of the #TeamElena Project Runway tweeters for Elena Slivnyak's Fan Favorite win.

4. Spending time with Thom & Manda!

5. Hanging out with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence backstage at Project Nunway and seeing their transformation into beautiful models.

6. Handling PR for the IIMUAHII "Supreme Beings" fashion show and getting to know Elena Slivnyak better. Great experience within PR/event promotions and wonderful working with other businesses that show their support to local designers through sponsorships.

12. Finding the Z-Rack through a desperate Google search to help with my clothes storage challenges - my racks kept collapsing and had poor stability. The Z-Rack is the best I've found and allows me to store more outfits.

TOPSHOP ‘TRICK OR TWEET’ COMPETITION

Topshop are inviting customers online and instore to engage in ‘Trick or Tweet' - a social media competition the brand has invented to celebrate its debut Halloween collection 'Witching Hour'.

Justin Cooke, Chief Marketing Officer of TopShop, announced, “We love the idea of using Halloween to connect our digital and physical worlds. We know our customer moves seamlessly between the two and we want to make that experience even more fun for them and drive conversation in our community around a moment that everyone wants to be a part of.”

From October 26th through the 31st, customers can enter the 'Trick or Tweet' competition by tweeting @Topshop their favourite Halloween style tip or a twitpic of their Halloween outfit hashtagging it #TrickorTweet .

@Topshop will send personalised messages to entrants to thank them for taking part with the best tweets each day treated to $150 gift cards.

For the first time ever in selected flagship stores, customers will be able to purchase items using tweets as currency in the 'Topshop Tweet Shop' where Halloween-inspired make-up will be given in exchange for tweets.

Customers visiting selected Topshop stores during these dates will also be able to get involved by taking a twitpic of themselves in front of instore 'Trick or Tweet' backdrops and posters.

#TrickorTweet can be used across both Twitter and Instagram for inclusion.

Get inspired by fashion and art at this dynamic, multimedia exhibit which spotlights 140 haute couture and prêt-à-porter designs created by Jean Paul Gaultier between the 1970s and 2010, along with numerous sketches, archival documents, fashion photographs and video clips. Despite the gritty and sometimes controversial content of his collections, the clothes remain beautiful, superbly crafted with the finest dressmaking and detailing skills. General admission is $11.

The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde, 1860-1900, ongoing thru June 17, 2012, Legion of Honor, SF, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Discover the limitless devotion to beauty and inspiration found in "The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde exhibit" at the Legion of Honor. This exhibit will also feature a series of exclusive programs including live entertainment, lectures and hands-on art making. Programs are free with museum admission of $11.

Outfitters: The Contemporary Art of Clothing, Sunday, March 4 through Saturday, May 13, 2012, Bedford Gallery - 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Explore an exhibition of twenty artists' work that uses armature of clothing or actual clothing as a premise for sculpture. Embracing personal ideas and the conceptual edge of craft, the artworks address concepts of money, human nature and statements of identity. Ticket cost is $5.

The beautiful and historic live/work Cotton Mill Studios in the Jingletown Arts District of East Oakland will be exhibiting artwork of resident and guest artists for its sixth F3 (Third Fridays) exhibition with a "Sideshow" theme. Exhibiting artwork includes painting, sculpture, photography, jewlry, fashion, mixed media and furniture. There will also be various live performances. No cost to attend.

The non-profit Your Special Child Development Center is hosting their first annual fundraising fashion extravaganza to raise funds for autistic children. The runway show will feature apparel from local Bay Area fashion designers. Cost to attend is $25 to $50 and includes appetizers or dinner.

Green Goddess Eco Fashion Show, Saturday, April 21, 2012, Deep Green Festival, The Craneway Pavilion, 1414 Harbour Way South, Richmond, 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Bay Area's premier 4/20 event "Deep Green" is hosting an eco-friendly fashion show of both men's and women's wear made from either recycled or repurposed hemp, bamboo or organic cotton fabrics. There will be 100% hemp tee's from Hempteeness, 100% hemp garments from Dash Hemp, Satori's designs that mix recycled polyester, hemp and organic cotton, and many other designers. Event registration cost ranges from $15 to $75.

Earth Day Eco Designers Fashion Show, Sunday, April 22, 2012, Civic Center Plaza, SF, 12:00 p.m.

The Earth Day festivities at Civic Center in San Francisco will feature an exciting eco-fashion show of apparel from local designers, showing that high fashion can be truly sustainable. Designers participating include Tuan Tran, Irina holmes, Mariya Milovidova, Daniel Chimowitz, Larisa LaVladi, Dustin Page and many more. The fashion show starts promptly at 12:0 p.m. on the Deep Green Stage. No cost to attend, but arrive early to reserve a spot near the runway.

Earth Day Envirolution Club Trashion Fashion Show, Sunday, April 22, 2012, Civic Center Plaza, SF, 2:30 p.m.

The talented designers of Truckee High School's Envirolution Club will unveil their new line of earth-friendly clothing at SF's Earth Day celebration at Civic Center. The Trashion show will feature glamorous outfits and exciting fashions, all created from recycled products that would have otherwise been buried in landfills. The fashion show will start promptly at 2:30 p.m. at the Earth Mother Stage.

A Bubbles Boutique Spring Fling Pop-Up Shop Event, Sunday, April 22, 2012, Dogpatch Studios, 991 Tennessee Street, SF, 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

DXC - Dunkxchange, Sunday, April 22, 2012, Terra Gallery, 511 Harrison Street, SF, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

DXC (the original buy, sell and trade travelling event series for sneakerheads and streetwear collectors) is invading San Francisco. Hosted by Fully Laced, DXC will feature 30 local vendors and their freshest collections. Music will be provided by DJ Juice and live painting will be done by Bigfoot and Jesse Hernandez. Cost to attend is $8 presale, $10 at the door and $15 for VIP admission.

Project Funway, Sunday, April 22, 2012, Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building, 1351 Maple Avenue, Santa Rosa, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Fashion design students in the SF Bay Area will show their works and compete for fan favorite and judges' prizes similar to the format of Project Runway. There will also be a showcase of fashions from Barbara Friday and an accessories boutique to browse. All proceeds benefit the music education programs of the Santa Rosa Symphony. Ticket cost ranges from $35 to $45.

Cherry Blossom Festival Anime Costume Contest & Parade, Sunday, April 22, 2012, Japantown, Post Street & Fillmore Street, SF, 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Cherry Blossom Festival will feature what promises to be a colorful costume contest with competitors wearing their most original and fashionable anime creations including cosplay, gothic lolita, kogal and harajuku styles. The contest will also include a parade by the contestants. No cost to attend.

Elementals: Million Fishes Art Collective Fashion Trunk Sale and Show, Sunday, April 22, 2012, 2501 Bryant Street, SF, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Million Fishes Gallery is hosting an afternoon of fashion, ritual jewelry, music and complimentary drinks and appetizers. Check out the new Sefirah Fierce 2012 collection and handcrafted wearable metal art and ritual jewelry from Sparkle Pow. No cost to attend.

Couture de Cure is a fashion show fundraiser benefitting the American Diabetes Association and Tour de Cure. Cocktails, wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served by Barndiva and Vin Couture while you enjoy the fashion show and silent and live auction. Ticket cost to attend is $100.

SF Carnaval King & Queen Competition, Sunday, April 22, 2012, Public Works, 161 Erie Street, SF, 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The SF Carnaval king and queen competition will be a fun and fierce multi-cultural music and dance event to select this year's Carnaval royalty, As with most of the Carnaval festivities, there will be colorful, sparkly costumes and exciting performances. Cost to attend is $15 in advance and $20 at the door, with proceeds going towards the Carnaval parade in May.

From March 24th through August 19th, 2012, the de Young Museum in San Francisco is hosting "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk", the first international exhibition devoted to the celebrated French couturier. Developed and produced in 2011 by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of the designer's own label, this exploration of Jean Paul Gaultier's creative world was organized in collaboration with the designer himself, providing the exhibition with access to his archives and couture items lent from private collections.

Gaultier launched his first prêt-a-porter collection in 1976 and founded his own couture house in 1997. Dubbed fashion's "enfant terrible" by the press from the time of his first runway shows, Jean Paul Gaultier is indisputably one of the most important, controversial and influential fashion designers. Very early on, his avant-garde fashions reflected a deep understanding of a multicultural society's issues and preoccupations, exploring with humor and with, established societal and aesthetic codes.

The exhibition, which Gaultier considers to be a creation in its own right rather than a retrospective, features over 140 carefully curated pieces, manly from the designer's couture collections, but also from his prêt-a-porter line. Created between the early 1970s and 2010, these pieces have, for the most part, never been exhibited for the public.

Jean Paul Gaultier's fashion world is illustrated by sketches, stage costumes, film excerpts, runway shows, concerts, videos, dance performances and television programs. Many of Gaultier's artistic collaborations are also explored: in film (Pedro Almodovar , Peter Greenaway, Luc Besson, Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet) and contemporary dance (Angelin Preljocaj, Regine Chopinot and Maurice Bejart) and popular music (notably Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga and Madonna, whose friendship with Gaultier has led her to graciously lend two iconic corsets from her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour).

Fashion photography is also a main feature of the exhibit with loans from collections of contemporary photographers and renowned contemporary artists (Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, Cindy Sherman, Erwin Wurm, David LaChapelle,Steven Klein, Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott, Pierre et Gilles, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, Paolo Roversi and Robert Doisneau).

The walk-through of the exhibit showcases "The Fashion world of Jean Paul Gaultier" in six organized thematic galleries:

THE ODYSSEY OF JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

The Odyssey gallery is an introduction to the couturier's creative world, with the intermingling of many of his favorite themes: sailors, mermaids and virgins. This exhibit showcases his adaptation of sailor tops and uniforms with his fascination for religious and mystical motifs. This section, which reproduces the look of a Gaultier couture salon, notably includes the very first dress he designed, which dates from 1970 and has never been publicly shown. His creative quirkiness is evident in pieces such as the sailor top made of mink stripes and his intricate work evident in the gold shelled mermaid pieces. One of the notable mannequins is of Jean Paul Gaultier wearing nautical stripes, speaking about his fashion origins and designs.

THE BOUDOIR

The Boudoir gallery celebrates sexual empowerment. Springing from early impressions in childhood often spent in the company of his grandmother, the designer's predilection for corsets, waist cinchers and all manner of feminine lingerie has led him to reinterpret those undergarments for modern women's wardrobes with cone-shaped bras and corset dresses becoming symbols of power and sexual freedom, the most famous being Madonna's cone shaped bras. One of the descriptions explain that Gaultier had come up with the lingerie-as-clothing idea after his fashion conscious grandmother almost left the house in a rush wearing her sheer slip under a jacket without pants. Gaultier was a young boy at the time and thought it was incredibly funny, but he saw how ironically beautiful the outfit was in mixing undergarments and outerwear. This came to the realization that there is something empowering about revealing what's typically concealed.

SKIN DEEP

Skin is what Gaultier describes as being the first garment with the human body form as a constant renewed inspiration for the designer. This is evident in the Skin Deep gallery with designs such as the bodysuit with intricate beadwork that gives the illusion of nudity, leotards of the muscular and cardiovascular systems with rhinestone embellished "blue and red veins", and skeleton piece leotards with rhinestone-black-felt "bones" applique. This section of the exhibition is also devoted to the Gaultier take of the male sex stereotypes, with couture designs including his famous skirts for men.

URBAN JUNGLE

The Urban Jungle gallery displays some of Gaultier's most exquisite and breath-taking works. The inspiration of multicultural and ethnically diverse influences is apparent within his haute couture designs. This ranges from the Arabs of the Barbes neighborhood, boubou-clad Africans, chic rabbis, Chinese flamenco-inspired dancers, Russian icons and Bollywood maharajahs. His couture is an ode to the aesthetics of the different mix of cultures and people. This section also shows the designer's retreat into the animal world through the use of leather, as well as python, crocodile and feathers. With being in close proximity to the collection pieces, it is easy to see the construction and embellishment detailing that makes each piece a haute couture masterpiece.

PUNK CANCAN

The Punk Cancan gallery is inspired by Gaultier's Spring 2011 collection, mixing the idea of punk (mohawks, tartan, fishnets) with "can-can" (full skirts and ruffles) and couture. The influences are found in the "Paris by night" of Place Pigalle and the punk-rock attitude of London's Trafalgar Square. Iconic Parisian symbols, the beret, the trench coat, the cigarette between the lips and the phallic Eiffel Tower, are mixed with references to Pigalle's sex shops and London's tattooed punks. This new-style woman in latex and leather, fishnets and laces, produce looks that are both outrageous and elegant.

METROPOLIS

The Metropolis gallery showcases the influences of the 1970's new wave and house music and Gaultier's most futuristic designs, leading to an exploration of advanced technology and science fiction. Since his first electronic jewelry designs and 1979 high-tech collection, he has continued to be at the cutting edge of fashion by introducing the use of materials not normally seen on the runway (vinyl, Lycra, neoprene, 3-D fabrics and inflatables) and collaborations with artists in the fields of pop and rock music, film and dance.

Throughout the exhibit, visitors will encounter 30 talking, hand-crafted mannequins whose faces are brought to life by projected video images. These models dressed by Gaultier, soliloquize, observe in silence and sometimes break into song and flirty whistles. The special technique of projecting video onto a three-dimensional form combines technology and craft, with the actor's own video image projected onto the sculpted head. Quebec director Denis Marleau's theatre company created the mannequins, whose quirky, poetic, joyful and provocative presence capture the spirit of the exhibit. The mannequins are based on models and performers Eve Salvail, Francisco Randez, Melissa Auf der Maur, Virginie Coosa and Suzie Leblanc, who each contribute something of their own artistic process to the fascinating fashion world of Jean Paul Gaultier.

The exhibit is a must see into the creative and talented world of Jean Paul Gaultier. With a keen interest in all the world's cultures and countercultures, Gaultier has picked up on the current trends and proclaimed the right to be different, and in the process conceiving a new kind of fashion in both the way it is made and worn. Through provocation, transformations and reinterpretations, he not only erases the boundaries between cultures, religions and the sexes, but creates a new androgyny of faith, propriety and modern life.

The de Young Museum recently held an exciting, fashion-forward contest to promote the launch of their special exhibition, "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk", which opens on March 24 to August 19, 2012. People were encouraged to submit their most inspired Gaultier get-up to win tickets to La Grande Fête - the opening black-tie ceremony of the exhibition on March 23rd that will be attended by Jean Paul Gaultier himself.

The de Young posted the submitted photos to their Facebook page, for everyone's viewing enjoyment and to encourage additional people to enter. The contest had a range of submissions, from the DIY home fashion style creations to San Francisco designer originals. What made Facebook as a contest medium interesting and engaging is that people had the opportunity to comment on the pictures. One of the comments to a woman who submitted a picture of herself in a cone bra was "Holy molely! The museum is awesome!" There were many more comments throughout the picture gallery that made following the submissions of the contest entertaining.

Without knowing how the judging was going to be done, many of the designers who entered encouraged friends to "like" their submitted pictures on Facebook, exciting everyone about the contest. One of the most popular pictures was that of designer Vasily Vein's that gained 587 votes. At the submission deadline, 63 photos were entered into the contest and everyone was eager to find out who would win the tickets to the de Young party and the opportunity to meet avant-garde designer Jean Paul Gaultier.

The big surprise of the contest was that the de Young Museum was able to have Jean Paul Gaultier choose the submissions he liked best. The two winners of the contest were San Francisco fashion designer Daniel Sudar and artist Christina Cree. Daniel entered one of the designs from his Spring 2012 collection and Christina entered a design that was showcased at fashionART Santa Cruz 2011. Daniel Sudar's response on Facebook and Twitter was "I am the winner of Jean paul.gaultier contest!!!!! He selected [the winners] himself. I am speechless....."

Overall, the de Young Museum executed a contest that had people thinking about Jean Paul Gaultier's fashion influence and how they could be involved in the museum's festivities. Even those who don't have the chance to attend the opening ceremony will have the opportunity for the greater celebration; viewing the exhibition and seeing Gaultier's inventiveness and humanist vision through cutting-edge fashion and eclectic sources of his ideas.

Fashion designer Alexandria von Bromssen hosted her fifth annual LoveSick runway fashion show in San Francisco last month, showcasing the Spring/Summer 2012 collections of ten designers from the Bay Area. The looks on the runway ranged from casual street wear and colorful party dresses to elegant accessories and chic eveningwear. Highlights include the feathered earrings from Velvet & Horns, Miranda Caroligne's deconstructed dresses, the stunning headpiece designs by Jasmin Zorlu and the sheer detailing that can be found in most of the designers' collections. Proceeds from the event benefited the Race for the Cure Foundation and the Hastings Prison Outreach Program.

With special tastes in mind, EFFEN Vodka created a series of events in 2011 in major metropolitan cities throughout the U.S. to explore the concept of design in both beverage mixology and art. Aptly named The Art of Design, the event brought together local mixologists, artists and people who appreciate both. In each city, premier local mixologist designed their ultimate EFFEN Vodka martini with the guests voting for their favorites. EFFEN also selected one local artist and one local fashion designer to make creations inspired by their cucumber flavored vodka. The artists were to bring paintings that were 95% done and then finish them at the event. Fashion designers came with a custom designed gown inspired by the cucumber flavored EFFEN Vodka.

Fashion designer Gail Ballesteros-Shrive of GB Shrive Designs was selected to represent San Francisco at their September 8, 2011 event at Terra Gallery with an inspired design budgeted at $1,000. Her original design sketch was a fitted boned corset with front lace fastening details and a very full scallop layered gown representing sliced cucumber. The gown was toned down when made, per EFFEN request, so the skirt wouldn't look so full.

The final design Gail Ballesteros-Shrive showcased at the event was a sleek gown made out of raw shantung silk in olive green, representing the cucumber color and the new EFFEN bottle. Each individual scallop on the dress is layered with a mint green colored lace fabric, hand painted with silver streak detailing, over a silk green lining, giving it texture and dimension. The corset is finished with piping around the edge and hem, boning for a flattering structure, and eyelets and lace for front fastening. Ballesteros-Shrive used the remnants of all the fabrics to create a sparkly flower for a final touch.

The dress Gail Ballesteros-Shrive designed was a beautiful complement to the evening: sleek, elegant and flavorful. While the cocktails poured by the mixologists were judged on merit of originality, creativity and how it tastes, the dress design of the evening earned its merit on originality, creativity and most importantly, how it looks.

The collaboration of EFFEN with designers at these events was a natural extension of their branding, as they are known for their thoughtful design from product to packaging. Their vodka was perfected by bartenders with a bottle designed for functionality with bartenders in mind. It would make sense that EFFEN Vodka, who appreciates good design, would promote the local design talent within each city. And in selecting designer Gail Ballesteros-Shrive to represent San Francisco, they have an eye for design and a good sense of taste.

Fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier will be in San Francisco to celebrate the opening exhibition of The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier at the de Young Museum on Friday, March 23, 2012. The party, La Grande Fête, will take guests "backstage" into the wild and wonderful world of Jean Paul Gaultier, fashion's enfant terrible, where they will have the chance to party and mingle with him. There will be fashionable mingling, delectable food, flowing cocktails and drinks, music and dancing to celebrate this outstanding event.

Gaultier's exhibit will include over 130 haute couture and prêt-à-porter looks, as well as sketches, photographs and infamous clips of his designs worn by style icons such as Madonna, Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue. The designs will be dramatically displayed in scenic contexts ranging from the boudoir to graffiti streets and the catwalk. Animated mannequins talk and sing in playful and outrageous vignettes, enhancing the artistry and culturally revolutionary work of Gaultier. The exhibit will be on display at the de Young from March 24 to August 19, 2012.

Ever since clothes have been in existence, there has been a need for a visual representation to help translate the idea or image into a garment. This communication of fashion originates with illustration, drawing and painting. Not only do fashion illustrations represent a design, they also serve as a form of art.

Illustrations convey the visual luxury in fashion as well as its interpretation. Everything revolves around an explicit or implicit message, suggestion, conciseness and aesthetics. The fashion illustrator utilizes this artistic skill and fashion industry knowledge in creating drawings of designs for a variety of media. This is a field where the best and most creative artists enter to promote the sale and growth of the fashion industry. Notable fashion illustrators include Christian Bérard (1902-1949), René Bouché (1906-1963), René Gruau (1909-2004), Irwin Crosthwait (1914-1981), Kenneth Paul Block (1924-2009), Andy Warhol (1928-1987), Antonio Lopez (1943-1987), François Berthoud, David Downton, Mats Gustafson and Jean-Phillipe Delhomme.

Many believe fashion illustration is at a cross roads with the competition and increasing popularity of fashion photography and computer generated images. Technology only enhances fashion illustration, not diminish it, aiding in the execution of a design concept to its audience. With technology's prominent role in design and manufacturing, a foundation in the art of fashion illustration is a valued skill that adds value to the technical and aesthetic appreciation of fashion.

The Art Institute of California is celebrating the beauty and elegance of fashion illustration with its Little Blank Canvas Fashion Exhibition on display through March 2012 in San Francisco. This exhibit showcases the talents of the students within the Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing & Management programs. This year, the students provided an amazing collection of sketches, drawings and other works influenced by the fashion world.

Amy Kweskin, a faculty of the Fashion Marketing & Management department, commented, "The exhibition intention is for the school and community to be inspired by the work of our students. Students enrolled in the In House Promotions course had a wonderful opportunity to gain experience in collaborating, curating and promoting fashion artwork."

It is through fashion illustration, that life is brought to a trend, a concept or a mood through artistic vision, realizing its continued importance in the expression and communication of fashion.

The Little Blank Canvas exhibition is on display through March 30, 2012 at the Art Institute of California campus art gallery located at 1170 Market Street in San Francisco.

TOKYObay, a San Francisco based fashion accessories brand in its 20th year has teamed up with noted fashion blogger Laura Ellner of www.ontheracks.com to show off the brand's main line and choose her favorite 2012 watch and bag accessories for a fashion photograph and video editorial. Shot in an old canning factory in the industrial area of SOMA in San Francisco, the photographs feature TOKYObay accessories styled by Laura with clothes from her own wardrobe. With the sparse concrete storehouse as the backdrop, the fashionable looks of Laura Ellner and TOKYObay stood out.

TOKYObay and Laura filmed a two part video "Passing Time", which features Laura as a stylist and model wearing key pieces from the TOKYObay watch and bag line. The first part launched in February and the second part will launch in April 2012. Laura wore items from her wardrobe that compliment each piece from the TOKYObay collection, giving a wearable and individual take on the brands retro inspired watch and bag line.
