Starting a fashion brand often begins with a creative idea. Maybe you have a clear design point of view, a specific customer in mind or a product you believe is missing from the market. But creativity alone is not enough to keep a fashion business running.

A strong financial foundation matters from the beginning because fashion businesses can require significant upfront spending. Materials, samples, production, packaging, photography, ecommerce tools and marketing can all add up quickly. Without a clear plan, it is easy to spend too much before the business has had a chance to generate steady revenue.

The goal is not to eliminate risk. It is to understand where the money will go, how much flexibility you need and which expenses deserve priority.

Start With a Realistic Startup Budget

Before placing your first production order, build a detailed startup budget. This should include every major cost you expect to face before and shortly after launch.

John Galliano has called off a planned exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art that was set to honor his decades-long career, the designer announced in a statement.

Galliano said he was “profoundly grateful” to the Met, and specifically to Max Hollein, Andrew Bolton, and Anna Wintour, for the opportunity to have his creative journey considered by an institution he has “admired throughout my life.” He described the process as moving him “more deeply than I can express.”

“After much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time,” Galliano wrote.

The designer addressed the controversy that has followed him since his 2011 antisemitic outburst in Paris, which led to his dismissal from Christian Dior. “I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry,” he said, adding that “meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture. It is a continuing responsibility, demonstrated through listening, learning and one’s conduct over time.”

Galliano said he did not want the debate surrounding him “to place the Met in a difficult position or to distract from the remarkable work of the Costume Institute,” and acknowledged that an exhibition honoring his work “would be painful for some.”

He also used the statement to reflect on his personal recovery, thanking those who have supported him through “fifteen years of sobriety and recovery from alcoholism and addiction.”

“My gratitude to the Met, Max, Andrew and Anna remains profound and enduring,” Galliano concluded. “Their generosity, humanity and belief in the importance of fashion as art, culture and history — as well as their understanding of human fragility and the possibility of growth — will remain with me always.”

Cardi B is back with a new music video for her single “A Ha,” and as always, the styling is just as much of a moment as the song itself. Shot on a rain-drenched New York street, the video finds Cardi surrounded by a crew of dancers as she serves look after look in the downpour.

For one striking scene, Cardi wears a cutout mesh halter top layered over a graphic tank featuring an illustrated portrait, paired with a chain-link belt slung over blue high-waisted bottoms — a mix of pieces from Meji Meji, the Lagos-born, New York-raised brand founded by designer Tolu Oye.

Meji Meji describes itself as an Afrocentric label redefining Black style through storytelling, nostalgia, and culture, drawing on vintage African-American style, West African textile patterns, and the rhythms of Nollywood and Juju music. The brand has built its identity as what Oye calls “a living archive,” with each design functioning like a stamp in time pulled from family albums, vintage prints, and postcards.

Elsewhere in the video, Cardi incorporates vintage Dior into the wardrobe rotation, blending high fashion archival pieces with Meji Meji’s culturally rich, nostalgic aesthetic for a look that feels both elevated and rooted in heritage.

Kenya Moore celebrated 75 years of Miss USA in signature glamorous form, stepping out on a mega yacht in Miami for an unforgettable night. The former Miss USA winner wore a gathered crystal-embellished jersey midi dress from Alaïa, retailing for $4,750.

The ivory piece features an allover scattering of mirrored crystal embellishments, a mock neckline, long sleeves, and a ruched, gathered detail cinching at the hip before falling into a fitted midi silhouette.

Moore completed the look with jewelry from Alexander McQueen, adding polish to the already striking dress. The evening’s glam was handled by makeup artist @2gifted.hands, who also captured video from the celebration, with hair styled by @darienmiche.

Styled by Law Roach, the singer stepped out in a caramel khaki trench with an asymmetric cut and enveloping silhouette from Alaïa’s Fall 2026 collection.

The wrap trench featured extra fabric on the sides that folded in on itself to create swinging pickups, while the coat’s dramatic asymmetrical draped hem added further structure to the piece. She completed the look with Cut Out High Boots in suede, featuring a thigh-high design with a 100mm stiletto heel and openwork detailing across the foot. The boots are made from a blend of suede leather and stretch Lycra and will retail for approximately $2,550.

The silhouette echoes similar asymmetric cuts previously seen from Alaïa’s Fall 2026 collection, worn by Charlize Theron and Zoe Saldana.

Dion’s outing marks her first meaningful public appearance in about eighteen months. Her Paris residency begins September 12 at the Plénitude Arena in Nanterre, running through October 17, followed by additional shows in May 2027. The engagement marks Dion’s return to the stage following her 2022 diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological condition.
