A new cultural movement is in the center of talks about art and its future development. Named as New Aesthetic and located on a Tumblr blog, this new idea began as a project after its founder, writer and technologist James Bridle posted a relevant article on riglondon.com, about the eruption of futuristic technology in our everyday lifestyle and virtual reality establishing in our physical world, through a great collection of images concerning new technologies, advanced fashion and contemporary design.

During an era that vintage style and nostalgic ideas are constantly rising – some blame it on the lack of designers’ ideas, some on the global crisis and some others on the fear of a near dark future that provokes romantic feelings of a past that is probably lost forever – Bridle comes to overthrow all these with his innovative project. The opposite of current vintage-lovers are the tech-lovers, whose ideals are much closer to Bridle’s theory. From the virtual walls of Pinterest to the pixelized outfits of Gareth Pugh and from the funky gifs of the Reed + Rader duo to the bionic silhouettes of Mugler, it seems that the new era is beginning, but, perhaps, we do not want to accept it yet. Bridle is a great supporter of robotic style in everyday life, in fact at this year’s SXSW Interactive conference he urged the attendees to come back next year in more futuristic outfits..

According to the New Aesthetic movement, every idea from the past should be deleted forever, considered as anachronistic and old-fashioned, while techno-inspired ideas are given as the “next big thing”. At a first glance, it really seems as a good idea, to create a whole new reality under the current difficult circumstances that may give us a little optimization, however, don’t you think that the gorgeous cultural heritage of our civilization has more undiscovered treasures to give? Personally, having Blade Runner, Metropolis, Douglas Rushcoff’s Cyberia and Cronenberg’s Videodrome on my mood board, I would say that I would prefer a 21^st- century version of Retro-Futurism in my lifestyle.

So, what do you think? Should we stay in our good-old retro ideas or make an instant travel to our near techno-future?

We're Desperate: The Punk Rock Photography of Jim Jocoy

Photographer Jim Jocoy's images are a trip to an era that is among the most inspiring and legendary in the history of music. During the 70's Jocoy was wandering among the punk rock clubs of San Francisco and Los Angeles, with his Polaroid camera in hand, capturing wild moments and some really interesting people. Making art and other DIY staff with his friends, he showed his colour prints only twice during that era and as a slideshow presentation on the 70th birthday of William Burroughs. After these events all images went into storage for over 20 years until they were discovered by Thurston Brooke, who gathered them in a cult art book for powerHouse Books in 2002. Titled We're Desperate, this amazing collectable book is a rare documentary of the 70's punk rock scene, spotlighting the rebellious and alternative attitude and fashion of the movement's followers, being a great source of inspiration for many creatives such as Marc Jacobs for his advertising collaboration with Juergen Teller similar to Jocoy's style.

Four young designers, leftover fabrics and some unique designs exclusively for Marimekko. The most famous brand of the North presents Proto, a great creative project, proving that one is moving ahead when working with fresh new minds. Marimekko commissioned four young creators to design their own collections using leftover fabrics in the most spectacular colours and patterns, giving them full freedom for the final result. Working closely with the brand's sewing professional team, the designers created four different collections with a fresh, playfull look inspired by different periods and brave combinations from chocolate stripes and candy colours to psychedelic prints and black marker spots. The Proto collections and video directed by Miika Lommi will be on display at the Marimekko Marikiska store (Uudenmaankatu 13, Helsinki) by the 19th of May, 2012.

One of my favourite new, avant-garde designers, London-based Gabriella Marina Gonzalez is launching her new collection for Autumn/Winter 2012-13 with the mysterious title Un-Self Portrait.

Designed, handmade and shot by the designer herself during her travel in the United States, the collection is a fresh, new take on dark, gothic style. Using unusual materials such as vintage monkey fur from a 1920's coat, shredded silk applique from an old discontiniued chiffon, vinyl from a 1950's table cover and silk rope from home decor, Gabriella ineterprets her travels to a sexy, yet sofisticated dress, sky-high platforms and a selection of BDSM-like accessories (the hits of the collection according to my opinion). Keep in mind this creator, i'm sure we are going to read a lot about her in the future.

7th Berlin Biennale

Since 1998 the Berlin Biennale has become one of world's biggest events for contemporay art. For it's 7th edition, curated by Polish artist Artur Zmijwesky, the event is calling us to become politically concious and responsible, through a social process.

This year's Berlin Biennale features the work of 30 artists from all over the world, all dealing with the current political situation, Democracy's rise and fall, feminism and all our society's problems that need an urgent solution. ACTA, protests, religion, the cuts on education and art, immigration,violence and many more social topics are behind influential artworks, performances and films giving the hope that art will once more give us the urge to think, act and dream of a better future.

For those who adore Cindy Sherman, but missed her latest exhibition in New York, there is a new retrospective at Metro Pictures Gallery. The exhibition hosts large-scale works of Sherman that depict various enigmatic female figures, all dressed in vintage and recent Chanel creations and without make-up. The key point of these amazing images is the relationship of the figures with their dramatic landscape backgrounds which were shot by the artist and then Photo-manipulated.

The Utopia of Joji Kojima - Exclusive Interview

Joji Kojima, one of Japan's most emblematic designers is amazing us again with his new collection, recently shown during Tokyo Fashion Week.
Entitled Utopia, this exciting collection is based on a selection of precious, sculptural rings in animal shapes, all made by leather, crystals, gold, metal and feathers in a wide variety of colours. Joji Kojima's cv, apart from his ultra-artistic collections, is full of succesful projects, exhibitions and big collaborations with Lady Gaga, Dom Perignon and ASVOFF among them. I'm very proud and happy at the same time to host a really interesting interview by this great designer and artist, talking about his new designs, his thought on the future of inetrnational fashion and his future plans. Enjoy it:

- Your latest collection is based only on rings. Why did you choose to work on only one object this time?

Whenever I work on a collection, the theme will be something I happen to take interest in.

This time, I had an opportunity to see Japanese and Thai dancing, which made me focus on the delicate movement of the fingers. Also, I had always been interested in beautiful forms of animals. Then I thought it best to put the two together as a ring on a finger.

- At your presentation during the Tokyo Fashion Week you showcased your designs as caged animals. You often present your designs around the idea of imprisonment with BDSM references. Tell me the story behind this idea and inspiration.

I do not particularly stick to the idea of imprisonment, but I always think it very important to aim at something “extraordinary.”

As a way of expressing this, I find the idea of imprisonment effective.

And I am very much interested in limitations and confinements for creation. It is quite interesting that I could demonstrate abilities to produce a work more in a state with physical and psychological restriction than in a complete freedom.

-Your collaboration with Lady Gaga has been discussed and admired a lot. Tell me about the experience of working with such a big star.

It was my great pleasure and honor to collaborate with her. The first opportunity came when I was in college at the age of 22. As a young creator, I was truly grateful for having such a wonderful chance.

And I respect Nicola Formichetti, Lady Gaga’s stylist, because he clear-headedly judges a creator not by his/her successful records in the past but by the quality and potentiality of the works.

- Which other historical or contemporary fashion icons would you like to design for and why?

Unless I get orders directly from an individual, I do not have anybody specific in mind when I design my works. However, it excites me tremendously to think of designing for people with extremely vivid individuality such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Björk, and Marilyn Manson.

- How do you think the global economic crisis has affected luxury trade and fashion in general and how do you think fashion is going to change in the next decade, due to this global phenomenon?

From a distance, I overview economy as a fluid with a fractal architecture. After a certain period, the present crisis will be gone. However, many countries including Japan are extremely unstable and exhausted.

The fact that we are in such a situation makes us long for something we have never seen before and find exaltation in entertainment. I believe that one of the roles contemporary artists could play is to provide such uncommon joy.

Ironically, however, the present economic situation will have a great influence on us and what is called “fast fashion” will continue to flourish. Therefore, the polarization between special and luxurious things and cheap ones will be clearer.

- You also sell your creations in Paris. Tell me how the Parisian audience has embraced your style and what are the differences or similarities between the fashion worlds of Paris and Tokyo.

The reactions from Paris were quite favorable.

Japanese people are rather hesitant toward the avant-garde, but there is no such tendency in Paris or New York. My style may be accepted better in Paris.

What sometimes bothers me in Tokyo, which in turn makes Tokyo an interesting place, is its multiculturalism, and thus its chaos. In fashion magazines, we find many items that could not be easily classified into clear genres such as “street” and “mode.” Therefore, Japanese audience may find it difficult to identify my works with those in traditional genres.

- What else should we expect from Joji Kojima in the future?

At present, my works are mostly jewelry, but I am not particularly obstinate about it.

I will be flexible enough to other ways of expressing my aesthetics.

Actually, I work as a producer and art director, too. I am currently interested in perfume, alcoholic beverages and hotels. What is most important in creating a work is neither knowledge nor skills, but aesthetic sense at the core.

Au Jour Le Jour is a new hot fashion label from Italy formed in 2010 by Mirko Fontana and Diego Marquez. The label was a finalist at the seventh edition of Who is on Next ? contest and aims to create a fresh, new look for the confident and sophisticated women. Their F/W 2012-13 collection is inspired by the work of Pop artist Richard Hamilton, with an essence from the vivid colours and silhouettes of 40’s and 80’s. This great, feminine collection is characterized by the rich materials such as lurex, silk, satin, wool crepe, cashmere and jacquard in a colour palette varying from white and earthy tones to bright pinks and blues with fine floral prints, consisting of gorgeous mid-lenght dresses and skirts, cropped pants, bell-sleeved tops and a selection of accessories. A feminine and luxurious collection from a design duet which, i believe, will be discussed a lot.

Hyeres 2012 International Festival

An execution machine, a black sheep and public vote. The experiment of artists Rouven Materne and Iman Rezai, both Master students at the Berlin University of Arts has already provoked a great argument about the ethical limits of art.

The two artists have built a fully functional wood-made guillotine exactly to the design of the 19th century execution machine, while a black sheep expects to be executed or not, depending on the audience's votes. This is not the first time that an artistic experiment is using animals - some use even human- in dangerous and probably lethal situations. There is always a controversy, much discussion, i do not know if there are even any results, but the question is always the same: How far can art go? Is this ethical? Is it brutal or not? Both artists have already posted that their experiment is around the idea of the current state and definition of our democracy. I have to declare that i'm voting a No, however the concept of this project makes me think about the experiment involving the South - European countries (including mine), related to their bankrupcy and probable economic extermination. Will they vote yes or no?

The Empire of Neurotic Mass Movement

Neurotic Mass Movement, one of London’s hottest bands are releasing their new much-awaited EP. Titled Empire of Tin, this new work is a gift by lead members Yin Neurotic and David Neurotic to their loyal fans. The amazing duo – and two of the most intellectual persons I know- along with bass player Rummy Keshet and violinist Rebekka Wilkens have already formed their own inspirational and artistic movement, promoting their fresh and progressive ideas through their music, their great live shows throughout Europe and their social media channels, followed by a really serious, art - concious and high-level audience. A few months ago I was extremely lucky to host a great interview by Neurotic Mass Movement and this time, I’m even luckier to host them again, through an exclusive in-depth interview about their new work, their thoughts on Media and their predictions for the global crisis. Your new EP is coming out soon. Tell me how was the making-of journey and what we should expect from this new work.

NMM: First of all we’ve never felt the need or had the urge to release music when we started. The main concern for us in the past was to convey situationist ideas through our live shows. The reason why we mention this is because we’ve been asked many times why we have not recorded and released a “record” yet. We’ve conceded to the idea of making a record now because of the overwhelming inquiries of NMM supporters.

We’ve worked in Berlin with Sebastian Lee Philipp of Noblesse Oblige, in Hamburg with Andre Winter and in London with Robert Harder and Benn McGregor of Ulterior. These are all people we truly respect and like their work much. Our record “EMPIRE OF TIN” was a creatively fulfilling experience. The record is a Pandora’s box of playful existentialism.

What are your plans for promoting the new album?

NMM: We leave that up to fate, but the record will be available through all the normal virtual music sites. Whether the record will be released on a label or not we shall see. We have been negotiating for some time with a few labels, but ultimately there will be a NEUROTIC MASS MOVEMENT record released later this year and doing the rounds.

You work in one of the toughest and most competitive industries. Since the world, especially Europe, is running through difficult and crucial times, how would you describe the current situation in the music industry and how it is affected by this global phenomenon?

NMM: We believe that the crisis that the music industry has found itself in is partially self-inflicted and in equal amounts because of its inability to adapt with new technology and consumers different listening habits. One of the problems that many upcoming bands without good label support find is the cost of recording, marketing, promoting and distributing their record. You need to recoup the money spent or you wont survive.The tradtional model of major record companies and even some independent ones is outdated and monolithic. Now the situation has arisen that there is a phenomenal decline in record sales and so many of these labels has gone bust which is sad, but inevitable. Irrespective of the crisis that the music industry has been in, there are still quite a few labels doing amazing work for artist and with artist, so we live in hope.

Do you think the economic crisis will lead to new artistic and music genres or ideas, just like during the crisis of the twenties era when there was an explosion of innovative ideas?

NMM: Absolutely. Its an interesting parallel, but it also happened during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s that significant cultural movements in music, art and fashion emerged from the economic crisis of those times. It seems to go hand in hand. At the moment we are particularly inspired by maximalism but we also have a soft spot for some of the ideas of the the remodernists. The grey area between modernism and postmodernism is what we are super interested in. We like the work of experimental film maker Fritz Stolberg, visual artist Yokna Patofa, sculptor Jessica, painter Jared Joslin, the fashion label Aganovich, the bands Breton and Witchboy, the writer Marie L. and the energy and attitude of Superhorstjansen.

What is your relationship with Media? Do you believe that media reports can create or destroy an artist’s career?

NMM: We generally find the media’s obsession with the “NEW” tiring and fatuous.We have been asked in the past why we haven’t done many interviews and its not that we dont like journalists...ahaha, but we have seen many artists, bands etc etc , some of them friends of ours who have been courted by the media, had their 15 seconds of infamy and then ridiculed. We find this sort of attitude really appalling and it has taken us some time to come to terms with the cut and thrust, the slings and arrows of the media.

In the immortal words of Oscar Wilde “ In old days men had the rack. Now they have the Press”

Lately, there is a lot of talk about a new term, post – feminism, describing the redefinition of women’s position in contemporary society. What is your opinion about this and how do you express it through your music?

NMM: First, second and third wave feminism achieved many things from the right for women to vote, equality for women in the work place and redefining women in control of their own sexuality. The fact is that sexism does exist, that’s the plain and simple truth. Its endemic in the music business and in the world at large. It’s ingrained in the socio-economic structure of society. Anyone who thinks it’s not is fooling themselves. NEUROTIC MASS MOVEMENT has a lot of female supporters from all walks of life with many different histories and opinions on sexism and feminism, but we all coexist together and that’s what we find interesting. NEUROTIC MASS MOVEMENT is not a particularly politically correct band, but we believe in the total free expression with no limitations of gender bias and this is quite evident in our work. .

I know that you are much influenced by art. But how about fashion? Do fashion trends inspire your work?

NMM: Definitely. You cant helped but being influenced by whats around you. Particularly as performers we are always checking out whats happening in the fashion world. It would be great to get some free clothes of Issey Miyake, Aganovich, Kansai Yamamoto, Jil Sander, Gaultier, Ozwald Boateng, Alexander McQueen, Miu Miu, Simon Spurr.

Tell me what’s the next step of Neurotic Mass Movement

NMM: Our record “ EMPIRE OF TIN” is almost finished and will be out later this year and we are very excited about it. It sounds great, truly dynamic and fresh. We will be touring and about to start collaborating with some interesting film makers to make a visual narrative/shortfilm/videos.

Bauhaus: Art As Life

The biggest Bauhaus exhibition in the UK in the last 40 years is hosted by the Barbican Art Gallery exploring one of the most influential artistic movements of the twentieth century.

Almost exploding during the period between 1919 to 1933, this new avant-garde movement was the best artistic remedy for post-war Europe. Founded by Walter Gropius and developed on various fields such as art, architecture, graphic design, interior design and typography, the Bauhaus school was based on simplicity, functionality and colour, becoming a major impact on the trends of Western Europe, Canada, the United States and Israel, even after its demise.
