I just realized I never introduced myself in my first blog, so I guess I will skip it, however I must tell you that I am someone who tends to get bored with styles fairly quickly and it is a rare moment when one thing keeps my attention for a prolonged period of time. I am constantly searching for the next thing that will inspire and push me towards a new creative place. That being said there are very few things in the design world I have found, that continually motivate and inspire me. Yet, no matter what season it is or what design project I am working on there is one constant in the world of jewelry that I always am inspired by. When in doubt, searching for references, or more truthfully, just about whenever, Cartier impresses me time and again with their use of materials, attention to the tiniest of details, wide variety of themes, and their ability create amazingly beautiful and inventive objects year after year. Here are some of my favorites; for now.

And if the Peoples’ Choice Awards, to be handed out on January 6, 2010 - two days after we all return from vacation - are any indication, the big fashion influencers of the the 2010 awards season will be: Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson. Designers - are you listening? The Peoples’ Choice Awards are NOT indicators of the Oscars or the Golden Globes. They don’t have much to do with credibility or acting ability. But they have everything to do with popularity, big ratings and money, money, money. The top nominees, or the “pop-culture juggernaut,” as the L.A. Times called it, is “Twilight.” Just in time for “New Moon” to come out, the first movie picked up six nominations this morning for the 2010 People’s Choice Awards, including favorite movie, favorite franchise, and the on-screen team of leads Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. The trio also received individual acting nods, with Pattinson and Stewart nominated for movie actor and movie actress and Lautner for breakout movie actor. HBO’s camp treasure “True Blood” got noms for TV obsession and TV sci-fi/fantasy. Star Anna Paquin also was nominated for TV drama actress. There are great sweaters and coats under $200. And we found this dress, called “the thousand tier” dress - in black or grey, with lovely sheer cap sleeves - that retails for $188.00. We noticed that it’s not dissimilar from the dress on the Banana Republic Christmas campaign poster - a black tiered dress. But Anthropologie’s clothes generally fit better than Banana Republic. And we like the smoky grey option - very now. Very winter 2009. And it will still look good this spring.

Since Sonia Rykiel is now doing a line with her daughter Nathalie for H&M - their Sonia Rykiel lingerie launches on Dec 5, and a knitwear clothing line launches in Feb 2010 - we thought we’d talk a bit about her, because folks in L.A. may not be familiar with the great ruby-haired designer. Sonia Rykiel is the true authentic essence of Paris. She’s sort of the female Jean Paul Gaultier. While Gaultier took famous French nautical stripes to the mainstream, as well as corseting and tight waists and flared trousers for ladies, Rykiel made the sweater sexy. She’s been making the world’s most beautiful sweaters and knitted tops and sweater dresses for thirty years. Her dresses are always deeply feminine and colorful - she’s famous for loving black, yellow, fuschia and bright green. She’s had a shop on Madison Avenue in New York for years, as well as a number of shops in Paris. She was one of the first designers to do studded leather handbags - bright leathers or black, covered in nailhead studs. They really caught on a few years ago, and she became better known for her bags than her clothing in America. She’s not widely distributed in America, but we thought we’d show you a few images from her spring 2010 show in Paris - which combined her love of bright color with lingerie looks and knitwear. It’s sexy - but it’s more “cute” sexy or “smart” sexy than in-your-face sexy. You know - French. Chic sexy. It would be nice to see her get a bigger name in America, because her mainstream collections are always beautiful. - Merle Ginsberg

After all, they’ve been living together for a while - now they’re shacking up. Big time. Joe’s did 42 different washes, which is a LOT. They retail from $82 to $98 at Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. And they look fine tucked into those very high boots, ladies. It’s a nice economical way to update your wardrobe fast. FYI, we are NOT a fan of the Joe’s Jean campaigns that are hyper sexual and tacky - but we do like these jeggings.

You probably already have your calendars marked for November 14th, when the Jimmy Choo collection hits H&M - and it’s not just shoes, but bags - and CLOTHES! It’s the first Jimmy Choo venture into clothing. Expecting it to sell out faster than a Smartcar on sale for two grand, H&M has already posted instructions on its website about HOW to shop for Jimmy Choo. It involves lining up at the stores, getting a bracelet while you’re online - needless to say, if you’re not there early - VERY early -this Saturday morning (6am or 7am, we’d say), you won’t get to buy any of the MUCH publicized Jimmy Choo pieces. But the shoes all look very sky-scrapery anyway. But here’s another important H&M date: December 5. This is the day our FAVORITE Parisian designer debuts a lingerie collection for H&M - just in time for holiday shopping. Sonia Rykiel, the famous flame haired Parisian knitwear designer, really is the essence of Paris sophistication and sweater-girl culture. Sonia and her daughter Nathalie Rykiel will do two lines for H&M spring 2010: the first is all lingerie and related accessories for women, with exclusive pieces to be launched in-store 1500 H&M stores on December 5, 2009. And at the same time, Sonia Rykiel will make this lingerie collection available in Sonia Rykiel’s major boutiques around the world - another first for H&M. Now, there’s lingerie - and then there’s FRENCH lingerie. Any lingerie designed by Sonia Rykiel is going to be dead chic. Then there’s a second collaboration for spring 2010, featuring an iconic Rykiel knitwear collection for women and girls (1.5 to 8 years old) accompanied by playful accessories. This second collection will be launched in around 250 H&M stores on February 20, 2010. The spring knitwear is colorful and it’s all very chic - and worth getting up at the crack of dawn for. And these pieces would look on any girl of any age and size.

Penelope Cruz does not vary much from very love of wearing all-black. And it is nearly winter everywhere but Los Angeles. In Rome for the premiere of her new Pedro Almodovar movie, “Broken Embraces,” she wore a Dolce & Gabbana cocktail dress, a cropped black blazer (sharp) - but then heavy suede boots that ruch up a bit. We love the boots and her very long hair - but with a fullish skirt that’s to the knee, the boots look a bit heavy. We think the heavier higher boots look better over leggings or with short skirts. A dress with more fabric in the skirt deserves a low boot or a high heeled shoe, like a Louboutin or a Sigerson Morrison bootie. Also, wouldn’t it be nice to see Penelope wear red or dark pink lipstick with this all-black look? Or carry a red bag? It needs just the slightest dose of color. But then again - things are different in Europe! - Merle Ginsberg

We got a notice about a new store in Santa Monica on Main St. called TrunkShow L.A. (2430 Main St, Santa Monica), which has this season’s trends for forty to ninety percent below retail prices. Well, we like that idea, but they didn’t give us any brand names or designers, and “Trunk Show” is a misnomer for this store, because a trunk show is a travelling sale of luxury designer goods from the NEXT season. This store should be called “Sample Sale,” not “Trunk Show.” Oh, well. The owners are Jen Mazur and Jenn Cunningham, and apparently, they are running fashion show videos, music videos, and stocking art and architecture books. Sounds cool. Now, is everyone in L.A. named Jen?????

Last week, the great L.A. based charity hosted an event at Nathan Turner’s design store in Beverly Hills, showing the spring sportswear collection by Lyn Devon. Lyn’s shown for two seasons now, and her looks are influenced by the 1950’s Americana, Audrey Hepburn - they remind us of the costumes from the movie “Picnic,” with Kim Novak, actually. Everything is tailored and cut beautifully, with a hint of retro and femininity. They are clothes to be worn in convertibles, with Hermes scarves on your head. Here are a few looks from spring 2010. You can purchase these looks at the store Arcade on Melrose in March 2010, and a portion of the price will still be going to P.S. Arts, which helps support L.A.’s art programs in the public schools. Check out the looks on LynDevon.com. We particularly love that fuscia sunburst pleated silk chiffon skirt, which is $650.00. It’s nice to hear about a new design being involved with an L.A. arts charity.

Prada is releasing a book of all of their diverse projects in fashion, architecture, film and art, called PRADA - with 708 pages of red carpet looks, art projects, video stills, photos from high concept campaigns, etc. Beyond any other fashion company, the Italian brand has certainly diversified into other other art forms, and worked with both established and very underground graphic designers, filmmakers, artists and architects in everything they’ve done - from their travelling exhibition on skirts, that went from Tokyo to Milan to NY to LA, and their films liked “Trembled Blossoms.” They bring fashion truly into the realm of culture and the arts. The book was celebrated in the brand’s Milan store, it’s New York store designed by Rem Koolhaus, and now the event and book are coming to L.A. The event is this Friday night, and clearly the Italians are not spooked by the Friday the 13th aura. It’s a private event, but we will be reporting from it. We always love to see what people wear to fashion culture events. Do they want to show their fashiony sides - or their cultural sides? And is there a halfway mark?
