The birth of Ali ibn Abi Talib

Ali was born on the 13th of Rajab of the 30th year of the Elephant (A.D. 600). His cousin, Muhammad, was now 30 years old. Ali's parents were Abu Talib ibn Abdul Muttalib, and Fatima, the daughter of Asad, both of the clan of Hashim.

Ali was born inside the Kaaba in Makkah. The great historian, Masoodi, the Herodotus of the Arabs, writes on page 76 of Volume II of his book, Murooj-udh-Dhahab (The Golden Meadows), that one of the greatest distinctions that Ali enjoyed was that he was born in the House of Allah.Some of the other authorities who have affirmed Ali's birth in the Kaaba, are:

Objectives and Benefits of Hajj

“And proclaim among people the Pilgrimage; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel coming from every remote path. That they may witness advantages for them and mention the name of Allah during the stated days over what He has given them of the cattle quadrupeds, then eat of them and feed the distressed one, the needy”.
Holy Qur'an (22:27-28)

Hajj is a great Islamic conference. It is and ideal demonstration of faith in which diverse groups of every race, class, and nationality join together at a given time and in a specific place. They repeatedly recite a single call, and proclaim the same slogan. They gather for one purpose.

To declare their servitude and loyalty to Allah alone, freeing themselves from any trace of polytheism and ignorance, in a deeply effective, collective way, which fills the soul with feelings of faith.
As the Holy Qur'an proclaims, and the Prophetic traditions bespeak, it is not only worship and a way of getting closer to Allah, but is a way of granting the pilgrim social, educational, economic and political benefits. Combined together these bounties are conducive to improvement within an Islamic society, increase its awareness, and activate its movement.

During Hajj, Muslims witness the most excellent example of equality, submissiveness, and human brotherhood. This is accomplished by removing the outer difference and donning the dress of unity Ihram. The result is that all feel a oneness among the human race, brotherhood and equality.
While performing Hajj, Muslims feel a oneness with the earth and the people. The invalidate all the artificial boundaries established by human, regional, national and racial superiority complexes and egoism. Traveling across thousands of miles, they penetrate all barriers, and rise above all-man-made hurdles, in order to respond to Islam's call of faith.

During Hajj, Muslims meet each other in a magnificent communion. They relate to each other's domestic and regional affairs. They consult each other concerning their life and religion. They exchange experiences, opinions, and good habits. They become acquainted with each other's problems. They learn of each other's viewpoints. This interchanging of ideas increases their awareness, knowledge grows, and the impetus to reform is invigorated. As a result, plans are proposed, projects designed, educational, political, social and economic centers are established. The Muslims support each other, as if they are one body and one soul.
Since Hajj is a large and impressive human gathering, it attracts millions of Muslims from different countries. It also stimulates an economic movement, which is beneficial to the world of Islam.

During Hajj, the pilgrim imbibes ethical and educational lessons which reduce his faults. He inquires patience through hardship. He becomes humble, generous, and tender. He renounces lying, backbiting, animosity, and pride. He learns from his journey through mixing with other. Within him, positive social tendencies grow and morals are refined.
Imam Ja'far bin Muhammad al-Sadiq (a.s.) has talked about Hajj and its benefits, eloquently answering the question of one of his followers, (Hisham bin al-Hakam).

Once he asked Imam Ja'far (a.s.), Why does Allah order His servants to perform Hajj, and circumambulate around the Ka'ba?
The Imam (a.s.) replied:
"Allah has created His servants and instructed them how to obey Him through the performance of religious duties. He has made (Hajj) a gathering in which people from the East and the West participate and become acquainted with one another. Every' single one of them benefits from the experiences of others who come from different places. Memories of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.), and his life will never be forgotten...etc.”
This explanation is completely congruous with that of his nephew, Imam Ali bin Musa al-Reza (a.s.) on the benefits of Hajj and its social effects.

Imam al-Reza (a.s.) says:
"People are ordered to perform Hajj so that they remain the guests of Allah, the Most High, gain divine rewards and win the remission of whatever wrong they have committed through repentance, and preparing for the future. During Hajj people spend of their wealth and selves, leave their families and children, refrain from pleasures travel inhospitable weather and are filled with determination to complete Hajj, while being continuously humble, calm and submissive. During Hajj benefits abound for all people every where, from the East and the West, on land and sea, for those who perform Hajj and for those who have not.
All people profit from Hajj, whether merchant, seller, buyer, the poor, and the destitute. Whenever the pilgrims get together the inhabitants of that place prosper. They in crease in knowledge, while spreading the statements of the Imams to every corner of the earth. As Allah, the Most High says:
"... Why should not then a group of every party from among them go forth in order to master religion so that they may warn their people when they return to master religion so that they may warn their people when they return to them that they may beware?”, and that they may witness advantages for them”
Allah, thus willed that Hajj be a place of prayer and devotion, a season for worship and enlightenment, and a bounteous field for the fulfillment of man's social interests.

How can we get rid of ignorant backgrounds?

Generally, nations and peoples suffer from deep-rooted pagan `jahiliyah', which is regarded as the most dangerous one in history. It is the source of ignorant thoughts and the ill deviations from which the ancient nations suffered. Today, the ignorant diseases and phenomena that afflict different nations and cause them to live in the ugliest scenarios in modern material civilization. In other words, modern man naturally and usually practises unbelief, atheism, moral corruption, oppression, aggression, greed, domination, exploitation, wars, destruction, and social chaos.
Even the Muslims, who believe in Islam, are forced or satisfied to follow these ignorant currents and decline into their deep abysses with the exception of those true believers who have understood this destructive danger, and who avoided it and refused to follow it. Therefore, if we analyse society and its modern civilization, we will be able to divide both the individuals and their societies into three parts:
1. An ignorant society whose life embodies all ignorant aspects such as communism, capitalism, materialism, deviated religions, idol worship,...etc.
2. Society in which individuals believe in Islam, but do not embody its beliefs in their lives nor apply it to their actions.Their society is also deviated and lost. It has no Islamic identity nor does it represent the original ideology. It imitates others in laws, art, literature, concepts, and method of life, in a manner which makes the social aspects and the form of general life similar to the ignorant form and the lost life which does not know originality and discipline.
Therefore, in such a society, it is usual to see nightclubs, bars, dissolute women, prostitution houses, usury banks, the system of the material life, the patterns of art, and the kinds of material culture, immoral literature, etc.
3. The faithful individuals who conform to Islamic beliefs, but are too few to form a social current to enable them to change the regime of life and mark Islam on the personality of the civilization stand apart and isolated in their society. They are deprived of the legitimate benefits of a healthy society.
Therefore, the total application and the full conforming to Islam, as a faith, a way of life, law, and behavior in order to achieve the sincere worship for Allah, the Glorified, are not naturally applied in the life of our societies nor embodied in our public life.
For this reason, in our life, concepts, behavior, regime, and laws, there are many ignorant foundations and non-Islamic concepts which came to us from both Eastern and Western ignorant and material thoughts. Such thoughts feed our own thoughts, our life, and our concepts.
Regarding this cultural invasion and influence, Muslims should sincerely do their best and devote their efforts in order to make essential changes, uproot `jahiliyah' (global ignorance) and demolish its rules and pillars. Therefore, Muslims should build their personalities and their society according to Islamic values, ideas, and principles. The following Qur'anic verse should be their example in life:
"And that there should be among you a group who call (mankind) to virtue and enjoin what is good and forbid what is wrong; and these are they who shall be successful." Holy Qur'an (3:104)

The Methods of Salvation

To save a Muslim from spreading the infection of `jahiliyah' and to help Muslims uproot its foundations in their society and civilization, and to achieve prevention and fortification against foreign, civil, and mental invasions, it is necessary for them to follow the following steps:
1. Achieving a full understanding for life according to original Islamic methods so that a Muslim knows the value of his life. He should ask himself:
What does existence in life mean?
What is the value of all beings with whom I deal?
How should my psychological relation be with life?
And how do I organize my relations in it?
A Muslim should consider these questions and take them into account in order to build his life on original Islamic teachings. Islam will guide him in all aspects including his possessions, rule, power, fame, life, death, pleasure, pain, and the human relations. These teachings differ completely from an ignorant understanding and its material viewpoint towards things, the world, and life.
Therefore, the first step to get rid of ignorant concepts is to achieve an aware understanding of existence and life on the basis of Islam and to make a general, psychological change to turn ignorant awareness and understanding, entering our societies, into a believing mental system and believing civil awareness which revolves around the axis of servitude to Allah, sincere loyality to Him, and going directly toward Him.
When a Muslim understands the meaning of life and its value, and recognizes the same right in it for others on the basis of these values and principles, he will see that all aspects of misery and aggression on the earth, such as poverty, aggression, terrorism, corruption, exploitation, enslavement, vanity, haughtiness, making light of man's values and rights, will disappear. Man will live a life of purity and dignity.
2. After this understaning is achieved, the reconstruction of both the Muslim's personailty and the society will fit together. It will cause the purification of the conscience and awareness of a Muslim against ignorant backgrounds and motives hidden in his depths, so that he may achieve the reconstruction and reorganization of the human personality from its inner side on the basis of sound, Islamic understanding. Thus, a Muslim will become honest, self-purified, a lover of good, ready to practise the Islamic life, and ready to accept its teaching.
3. The third method of uprooting ignorant backgrounds is to establish an Islamic society which unifies its individuals within the framework of an organized human unity full of believing spirit and truthful, believing direction and in which a Muslim will practise Islam as a living fact and as a social system, thought, behavior, life, and pure servitude to Allah only under the shade of a lawful authority which believes in Islam and stands on its principles in order to build the society with its foundations, activities, and the aspects of life based on original Islamic rules.
With this method, we are able to get rid of ignorant backgrounds and keep the course of the Muslim individual and society within the boundaries of Islam.
However, if we are satisfied with mere theoretic belief, while all, or most, of our behavior, life system, dealings, and laws of our society are far and deviated from Islam, we will not achieve full belief nor raise ourselves to the level of true Islam as Allah desires for us.
Rather our belief will bend toward `jahiliyah' and servitude at random, though many of us do not feel this contrast, duplicity, and collapse.

I Request all of you to recite Namaz e wahshat to night for Syed Mohammad Najmuddin S/O LATE SYED MOHAMMAD MASUM.

It is Mustahab that on the day of the burial on this night between Maghrib and Isha one
should recite two rakats prayer. This is known as Namaz-e-Wahshat because for the dead
person the most horrifying and difficult is the first night.

In the first rakat:

after Surah Hamd recite Ayatul Kursi

and in the second rakat after Surah Hamd recites Suarah Qadr 10 times

and after the prayer say:

Imam Hussain -Views of Non-Muslim Scholars

The event of Karbala marks the greatest sacrifice for the sake of God in the human history. The minute and stunning details of this great event have been written and survived from the very first day by the eye witnesses. For the last fourteen hundred centuries, the battle of Karbala reflects the collision of the good versus the evil, the virtuous versus the wicked, right versus the wrong, and the collision of Imam Husain (the head of virtue) versus Yazid (the head of impiety).

Edward G. Brown, the professor of Arabic and oriental studies at the University of Cambridge, praises Imam Husain in these words:

"… a reminder of the blood-stained field of Kerbela, where the grandson of the Apostle of God fell at length, tortured by thirst and surrounded by the bodies of his murdered kinsmen, has been at anytime since then sufficient to evoke, even in the most lukewarm and heedless, the deepest emotions, the most frantic grief, and an exaltation of spirit before which pain, danger and death shrink to unconsidered trifles."

As the Imam of the time and true representative of his grandfather Prophet Muhammad (S), Imam Husain (A) stood up against the tyrant of the time to safeguard and protect Islam and guide fellow Muslims. On the other hand, the staying power of the rulers (Mu'awiya and his son Yazid) depended solely on the might of the sword. They used brute force to rule over the Muslim empire even by all possible illicit means.

By the time the sun was set, the day of Ashura in the plains of Karbala, witnessed Imam Husain (A) giving up everything humanly possible in the way of God including his 72 brave and loyal followers and his 6 months beautiful baby, Ali Asghar. In the wake of such a great sacrifices, the Quran praises as:

“Think not of those who are slain in God's way as dead. Nay, they are living, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord” (Qur'an 3:169).

Before the battle of Karbala, the world knew only the rule that “The Might is the Right”. However, the day of Assura introduced even more powerful rule to this world; “The Right is the Might” . Now, the blood of the innocent could win over the sword of a tyrant.

Mahatma Gandhi (Indian political and spiritual leader) writes: “I learned from Hussein how to achieve victory while being oppressed.”

According to the great poet Rabindranath Tagore, Hussain’s sacrifice indicates spiritual liberation. He writes: “In order to keep alive justice and truth, instead of an army or weapons, success can be achieved by sacrificing lives, exactly what Imam Hussain (A.S.) did”

Such an everlasting victory can only be achieved by the one who totally believes and trust in the Almighty God.

Thomas Carlyle (Scottish historian and essayist) explains: “The best lesson which we get from the tragedy of Karbala is that Husain and his companions were rigid believers in God. They illustrated that the numerical superiority does not count when it comes to the truth and the falsehood. The victory of Husain, despite his minority, marvels me!”

Imam Hussain (A.S.) explains the mission of his sacrifice in his own words: “I have taken this stand not out of arrogance or pride, neither out of mischief or injustice. I have risen to seek reform in the community of my grandfather. I would like to bid good, forbid evil, and follow the tradition of my grandfather and my father ‘Ali bin Abi Talib.”

Charles Dickens (English novelist) writes: “If Husain had fought to quench his worldly desires…then I do not understand why his sister, wife, and children accompanied him. It stands to reason therefore, that he sacrificed purely for Islam.”

In spite of all the painful aspects of Karbala, it holds a great significance in the Islamic history, for the revolution of Imam Husain (A) was not merely an event which had taken place by chance. It was rather a movement for the revival of Islam. Imam Hussain (A) declared his noble mission right from the day one.

Antoine Bara (Lebanese writer) writes: “No battle in the modern and past history of mankind has earned more sympathy and admiration as well as provided more lessons than the martyrdom of Husayn in the battle of Karbala.” (Husayn in Christian Ideology)

History has seen numerous massacres of innocent people, but the tragedy of Karbala is one of the few where men, women and children voluntarily allowed themselves to be subjected to hunger, thirst, humiliation and death on the burning sands of Karbala because they believed that Imam Hussain (A) stood for righteousness. Little wonder that for over 1400 years Muslims, have been nurturing the tale of Karbala in their hearts like an open wound, lest they should forget the supreme sacrifice of Imam Hussain (A) and his followers.

Great spiritual leaders are known to make great sacrifices, but at Karbala, common men and women with infants at their bosom, their hearts and souls aflame with righteousness, chose death rather than evil and weakness. Such was the greatness of Imam Hussain (A); such was his spiritual power, which could uplift common mortals to heights of supreme courage and sacrifice.

Dr. K. Sheldrake writes: “Of that gallant band, male and female knew that the enemy forces around were implacable, and were not only ready to fight, but to kill. Denied even water for the children, they remained parched under the burning sun and scorching sands, yet not one faltered for a moment. Husain marched with his little company, not to glory, not to power of wealth, but to a supreme sacrifice, and every member bravely faced the greatest odds without flinching.”

Dr. Radha Krishnan writes “Though Imam Hussain gave his life years ago, but his indestructible soul rules the hearts of people even today.”

The tragedy of Karbala took place in 680 AD on the banks of the Euphrates in Iraq but Karbala has a universal appeal and in today’s climate of violence, it is more relevant than ever. The tragedy of Karbala and its spirit of non-violent resistance and supreme sacrifice has been a source of inspiration to the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru.

Mahatma Gandhi’s first Salt Satyagrah was inspired by Imam Hussain’s non violent resistance to the tyranny of Yazid. Gandhi is said to have studied the history of Islam and Imam Hussain (A), and was of the opinion that Islam represented not the legacy of a sword but of sacrifices of saints like Imam Hussain (A).

Mahatma Gandhi writes:“My faith is that the progress of Islam does not depend on the use of sword by its believers, but the result of the supreme sacrifice of Hussain (A), the great saint.”

Nehru considered Karbala to represent humanities strength and determination.He writes:
“Imam Hussain’s (A) sacrifice is for all groups and communities, an example of the path of righteousness.”

Dr. Rajendra Prasad writes, “The sacrifice of Imam Hussain (A) is not limited to one country, or nation, but it is the hereditary state of the brotherhood of all mankind.”

Dr. Radha Krishnan writes, “Though Imam Hussain (A) gave his life almost 1300 years ago, but his indestructible soul rules the hearts of people even today.”

Swami Shankaracharya describes, “It is Hussain’s (A) sacrifice that has kept Islam alive or else in this world there would be no one left to take Islam’s name.”

Mrs. Sarojini Naidu writes, “I congratulate Muslims that from among them, Hussain (A), a great human being was born, who is reverted and honored totally by all communities”

Simon Ockley (1678-1720), the Professor of Arabic at the University of Cambridge writes:

"Then Husain mounted his horse, and took the Koran and laid it before him, and, coming up to the people, invited them to the performances of their duty: adding, 'O God, thou art my confidence in every trouble, and my hope in all adversity!'… He next reminded them of his excellencies, the nobility of his birth, the greatness of his power, and his high descent, and said, 'Consider with yourselves whether or not such a man as I am is not better than you; I who am the son of your prophet's daughter, besides whom there is no other upon the face of the earth. Ali was my father; Jaafar and Hamza, the chief of the martyrs, were both my uncles; and the apostle of God, upon whom be peace, said both of me and my brother, that we were the chief of the youth of paradise. If you will believe me, what I say is true, for by God, I never told a lie in earnest since I had my understanding; for God hates a lie. If you do not believe me, ask the companions of the apostle of God [here he named them], and they will tell you the same. Let me go back to what I have.' They asked, 'What hindered him from being ruled by the rest of his relations.' He answered, 'God forbid that I should set my hand to the resignation of my right after a slavish manner. I have recourse to God from every tyrant that doth not believe in the day of account.'"

Ignaz Goldziher (1850-1921), the Famous Hungarian orientalist scholar writes:

"Ever since the black day of Karbala, the history of this family … has been a continuous series of sufferings and persecutions. These are narrated in poetry and prose, in a richly cultivated literature of martyrologies - a Shi'i specialty - and form the theme of Shi'i gatherings in the first third of the month of Muharram, whose tenth day ('ashura) is kept as the anniversary of the tragedy at Karbala. Scenes of that tragedy are also presented on this

day of commemoration in dramatic form (ta'ziya). 'Our feast days are our assemblies of mourning.' So concludes a poem by a prince of Shi'i disposition recalling the many mihan of the Prophet's family. Weeping and lamentation over the evils and persecutions suffered by the 'Alid family, and mourning for its martyrs: these are things from which loyal supporters of the cause cannot cease. 'More touching than the tears of the Shi'is' has even become an Arabic proverb."

Edward Gibbon (1737-1794), considered as the greatest British historian of his time writes

"In a distant age and climate the tragic scene of the death of Husain will awaken the sympathy of the coldest reader."

[The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, London, 1911, volume 5, pp. 391-2]

Peter J. Chelkowski, Professor of Middle Eastern Studies, New York University, writes

"Hussein accepted and set out from Mecca with his family and an entourage of about seventy followers. But on the plain of Kerbela they were caught in an ambush set by the … caliph, Yazid. Though defeat was certain, Hussein refused to pay homage to him. Surrounded by a great enemy force, Hussein and his company existed without water for ten days in the burning desert of Kerbela. Finally Hussein, the adults and some male children of his family and his companions were cut to bits by the arrows and swords of Yazid's army; his women and remaining children were taken as captives to Yazid in Damascus. The renowned historian Abu Reyhan al-Biruni states; "… then fire was set to their camp and the bodies were trampled by the hoofs of the horses; nobody in the history of the human kind has seen such atrocities."

Reynold Alleyne Nicholson(1868-1945), Sir Thomas Adams Professor of Arabic at the University of Cambridge, writes, "Husayn fell, pierced by an arrow, and his brave followers were cut down beside him to the last man. Muhammadan tradition, which with rare exceptions is uniformly hostile to the Umayyad dynasty, regards Husayn as a martyr and Yazid as his murderer."

Robert Durey Osborn (1835-1889), the Major of the Bengal Staff Corps, writes,"Hosain had a child named Abdallah, only a year old. He had accompanied his father in this terrible march. Touched by its cries, he took the infant in his arms and wept. At that instant, a shaft from the hostile ranks pierced the child's ear, and it expired in his father's arms. Hosain placed the little corpse upon the ground. 'We come from God, and we return to Him!' he cried; 'O Lord, give me strength to bear these misfortunes!' … Faint with thirst, and exhausted with wounds, he fought with desperate courage, slaying several of his antagonists. At last he was cut down from behind; at the same instance a lance was thrust through his back and bore him to the ground; as the dealer of this last blow withdrew his weapon, the ill-fated son of Ali rolled over a corpse. The head was severed from the trunk; the trunk was trampled under the hoofs of the victors' horses; and the next morning the women and a surviving infant son were carried away to Koufa. The bodies of Hosain and his followers were left unburied on the spot where they fell. For three days they remained exposed to the sun and the night dews, the vultures and the prowling animals of the waste; but then the inhabitants of a neighboring village, struck with horror that the body of a

grandson of the Prophet should be thus shamefully abandoned to the unclean beasts of the field, dared the anger of Obaidallah, and interred the body of the martyr and those of his heroic friends.”

Sir William Muir (1819-1905), the Scottish scholar and statesman and held the post of Foreign Secretary to the Indian government as well as Lieutenant Governor of the Northwestern Provinces writes: "The tragedy of Karbala decided not only the fate of the caliphate, but of the Mohammedan kingdoms long after the Caliphate had waned and disappeared."

Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) and the Month of Muharram

"My son! Convey my greetings to my followers and tell them that: my father passed away while he was lonely, so weep on him; and that he was martyred, so shed tears over him …"

(Imam Hussain (PBUH) addressing his son Imam Sajjad (PBUH) on his last moments)⁽¹⁾

The Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) constantly encouraged their followers to weep and make others weep over Imam Hussain (PBUH), and they themselves were committed to do so. In Zyiarah of Nahiya, Imam Mahdi (PBUH) addresses his blessed forefather, Imam Hussain (PBUH), by saying; "I shall mourn you every morning and every evening, and I shall weep blood for you instead of tears."⁽²⁾

While emphasizing constant mourning for Imam Hussain (PBUH), the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) made their grief more apparent upon entering the month of Muharram.

In this regard, Imam Reza (PBUH) says; "When the month of Muharram arrived, my father was not seen smiling, and during the first ten days, his grief would intensify with every day that passed. The day of Ashura - the tenth day – was the peak of his grief and crying; and he would repeatedly say (on that day): this is the day that Hussain (PBUH) was killed."⁽³⁾

In addition to individual mourning and personal grief, the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) also emphasized the mourning gatherings. In fact, they held these gatherings in their houses or public venues.

Di'bil Khuzaii says: I met Imam Reza (PBUH) during the days before Ashura while he was in a state of mourning and sitting among his followers. The Imam (PBUH)asked me to sit besides him, and he said to me, "O! Di'bil! These days are the days of grief for us, and the days of delight for our enemies; recite a eulogy for the Master of the Martyrs (PBUH)."

Di'bil says that I recited a poem about the tragedies of Imam Hussain (as). Imam Reza (PBUH) and the others cried so intensely that the sound of crying permeated the entire house.⁽⁴⁾

Moreover, Imam Reza (PBUH) said to Rayyan bin Shabib on the first day of Muharram, "Muharram is the month in which (even) the ignorant Arabs used to forbid any war; however, in this very month our women and progeny were taken into captivity and their tents were set on fire …. and they did not respect the dignity of the Prophet (PBUH&HP)." ⁽⁵⁾

Imam Hussain (PBUH) tolerated all these calamities so that the religion of Islamand true worship of Allah (SWT) would survive. The rising of Imam Hussain (PBUH) guarded the religion of Allah (SWT), and mourning over his tragedies keeps the Divine message of his uprising alive. To this end, mourning the oppressed martyr of Karbala (PBUH) pleases Allah (SWT), as the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) themselves constantly commemorated his martyrdom. Therefore, it is good to remind ourselves of the life of the Master of the Martyrs (PBUH), the message of his rising, and his grief over these days, and to commemorate and hold mourning gatherings in an attempt to follow the tradition of the dignitaries of our religion.

Most of these Nauhas are very popular in India and as a response to requests from many momineen, we are in the process of making available audios of all these Nauhas so that people are able to recite them in the proper manner as was the wish of Syed Wirasat Ali Rizvi Saheb himself.

Also, we have seen that the current generation is not very familiar with khalis (chaste) urdu that is used in these Nauhas and we have included translations in order that people are able to better understand them.
But please note that we have NOT attempted to put the translations into rhyme and they simply convey the gist of the nauhas' meanings.

We have also included a small dictionary of some of the less common Urdu words on this site.

Presently not all Nauhas have Audios and translations available but Insha-Allah, we intend to have them available on this site before the date of their use comes up.

We will also be putting all the above printed matter online in Urdu, Devnagri and Gujarati script for Momineen who are more at ease with these languages.

Syed Wirasat Ali Rizvi (Fikr* Lucknawi)

Syed Wirasat Ali Rizvi was born in 1892 in Lucknow, India where he lived all his life. He was from a long line of Hakims.

For a time he served as an assistant to a doctor and later went on to practice on his own.

In a preface to the 1955 edition of his bayaaz, Syed Wirasat Ali Saheb wrote:

"My life was full of so many worries and hardships that 'biradaram' Maulvi Syed Zafar hussain Sahab Zafar gave me the nickname 'fikr' (worry).

Poetry requires mental peace and free time, which unfortunately has not been available to me. My pen-name has thus been limited to a bayaaz (Mehr-e-Fughaan) of a few nauhas.

If the much respected Nawab Jafar Ali Khan Saheb, Asr* Lucknawi, were not to have encouraged me after his critical review, I doubt if I would have the courage to publish this bayaaz.

I thank him from the bottom of my heart."

In the early 1920's he was posted at Basra, Iraq, with a medical team of British forces that were in control of Iraq post WWI. It was then that he had the opportunity to briefly visit the mausoleums of Imam Husein and other martyrs of Karbala.

After his return to India, he always longed to return to Karbala and it was his ambition to be buried there. This yearning to return to Karbala is reflected in all his nauhas.

Alas, this was never to be. Syed Wirasat Ali Rizvi died of cancer of the larynx on the 10th of September 1959 leaving behind a son and eight daughters.

Though his mortal remains rest in Talkatore ki Karbala in Lucknow, we can be sure that in spirit he is in the service of the Shaheed'e Karbala.

Practices and Merits of Muharram

Below are the practices and merits of Muharram taken from Mafatih al Jinan

Syed ibn Tawoos in his book "Iqbal al Amal" has mentioned several prayers that are to be performed on this night.

First Prayer:
This prayer consists of 100 rakats. Sura Fatiha and Sura Tawhid (Ikhlaas) should be recited in every rakat.

Second Prayer:
This prayer consists of 2 rakats. In the first rakat one should recite Sura al Fatiha and Sura An'am. In the second rakat, one should recite Sura al Fatiha and Sura Yaseen.

Third Prayer:
This prayer consists of 2 rakats. Sura Fatiha and Sura Tawhid (Ikhlaas) should be recited 11 times each in every rakat. RasoolAllah (saw) said, "He who recites these two rakats of prayer on this night and holds fast on the following day is like one who has performed good deeds for the entire year. He will be protected during that year and if he dies, he will enter Paradise".

Vigil on the night before Muharram
If possible one should keep awake on this night, spending it in recitation of Quran, dua, and prayer.

Keeping fast during the first 9 days of Muharram
Sheikh Toosi has written, "It is recommended to hold fast during the first 10 days of Muharram. However on the day of Ashura (10th Muharram) one should simply abstain from eating and drinking until the late afternoon, then he should eat a little of the soil from the grave of Imam Hussain (asws).

To refrain from eating and drinking without making niyyat (intention) of fasting
For Shias it is worth abstaining from eating and drinking without the intention of fasting during the day. In the late afternoon they should eat things which are eaten by the bereaved such as yogurt, milk, etc. and not eat delicious tasting foods. They should also wear clean clothes and roll up their sleeves like the bereaved people.

Fasting is not allowed on the day of Ashura
Allamah Majlisi in his book Zad al Ma'ad has written, "It is preferable to not hold fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram because Bani Ummayyah (la) used to hold fast on these days in order to receive blessings and to rejoice at the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (asws). They (Bani Ummayyah la) have misled people by attributing to RasoolAllah (saw) a large number of false hadiths which claim the rewards of fasting on these two days. However there are numerous hadiths narrated by Masoomeen (asws) which state holding fast on these days but in particular the day of Ashura is haram."

Practices on the night before Ashura
If one has been granted the blessing of going to Karbala to make ziarat of the shrine of Imam Hussain (asws) on this night and will spend this night in the holy shrine of Imam Hussain (asws), then Allah will resurrect him in the glory of the blood of Imam Hussain (asws). He will be considered as amongst the martyrs who accompanied Imam Hussain (asws).

The tenth day of Muharram is the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (asws). This is the day of tragedy and great sorrow for Masoomeen (asws) and Their Shias. For the Shias, it is appropriate to not get involved in worldly affairs on this day and not to buy anything for storing in their houses. They should weep and mourn over the Imam (asws) and they should also narrate His tragedy. The Shias should hold majalis for Imam Hussain (asws) and express their grief in the way they do for their own dearest children or relatives. In addition, they should perform ziarat of Imam Hussain (asws) by reciting Ziarat Ashura. They should insist upon calling down the curses from Heaven upon the killers of Imam Hussain (asws) and in order to console one another due to this great tragedy, they should say:

ÃÚÙã Çááå ÃÌæÑäÇ ÈãÕÇÈäÇ ÈÇáÍÓíä Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã

Much and highly satisfying is the recompense from Allah for us when we are with Hussain (asws)

æ ÌÚáäÇ æ ÅíÇßã ãä ÇáØÇáÈíä ÈËÇÑå ãÚ æáíå ÇáÅãÇã ÇáãåÏí ãä Âá ãÍãÏ Úáíåã ÇáÓáÇã

In His sorrow and grief and surely He will make us and you to be amongst the good and worthy who will assist His cause and purpose under the wilayah of Imam al Mahdi (atfs) who is from Aal e Muhammad (asws) (Progeny (asws) of Muhammad saw)

It is worth reciting the maqtal of Imam Hussain (asws) and causing tears to flow from the eyes of one another. It has been related that Nabi Musa (as) was ordered to visit Hz Khizr (as) and to learn from him. While talking to Musa (as), Hz Khizr (as) first narrated the tragedies and sufferings that Ahlul Bayt (asws) would have to bear which caused Hz Khizr (as) and Nabi Musa (as) to weep intensely. Ibn Abbas (ra) is quoted as saying, "I went to Imam Ali (asws) in Dhir Qar (near Basra). He took out a sheet of paper upon which He had written a saying of RasoolAllah (saw). Imam Ali (asws) read it for me. The paper included the tragedy of Imam Hussain (asws) and told how He would be slaughtered and identified those who would kill Him, those who would help Him, and those who would be martyred with Him. Then Imam Ali (asws) wept immensely and so did I."

Vigil on the night before Ashura
It is related that, "One who keeps vigil on this night is like one who has worshipped Allah in the manner as the angels. The worship on this night is equal to the worship of 70 years".

Prayer of Moula Ali (asws) on the night before Ashura
This prayer consists of 4 rakats. In every rakat one should recite Sura Fatiha once and Sura Tawhid (Ikhlaas) 50 times. This prayer has numerous rewards. One should frequently say the names of Allah upon completion of this prayer.

100 rakat prayer on the night before Ashura
Syed ibn Tawoos in his book "Iqbal al Amal" has mentioned numerous duas and prayers that contain unlimited rewards for this night. Amongst them is a 100 rakat prayer. In each rakat one should recite Sura Fatiha once and Sura Tawhid (Ikhlaas) 3 times. When one completes the prayer he should say the following 70 times:

ÓÈÍÇä Çááå æ ÇáÍãÏ ááå æ áÇ Åáå ÅáÇ Çááå

Glory be to Allah and all praise be to Allah and there is no god except Allah

æ Çááå ÃßÈÑ æ áÇ Íæá æ áÇ ÞæÉ ÅáÇ ÈÇááå ÇáÚáí ÇáÚÙíã

Allah is the greatest and there is no power or strength except from Allah, Most High Most Great

According to another hadith, before saying "Aliul Azeem" one should also ask Allah for forgiveness.

4 rakat prayer on the night before Ashura
This prayer is to be performed late at night. In every rakat one should recite Sura Fatiha once and Ayatul Kursi, Sura Tawhid (Ikhlaas), Sura Falaq, and Sura al Nas ten times each. After one performs the salam of the prayer, then he should recite Sura Tawhid (Ikhlaas) 100 times.

Refraining from mundane affairs on the Day of Ashura
Bani Ummayyah (la) stored their provisions for the entire year in their houses on the Day of Ashura as a means of blessing. Imam Reza (asws) said, "If one does not attempt to earn his daily bread on the day of Ashura and does not occupy himself with work, then Allah Almighty will meet both his worldly and otherworldly requests. If one mourns, expresses sorrow, and weeps on the day of Ashura, then Allah will make the Day of Resurrection a day of happiness and joy for him and his eyes will be brightened by meeting Us in Paradise. If one considers the day of Ashura as a day of blessing and stores things in his house on that day, then Allah will not bless the provisions for him. In the hereafter, he will be gathered with yazid (la), ubaydullah (la) ibn ziyad (la) and umar (la) ibn saad (la)."
Therefore, one should not involve himself in any way with the affairs of this world on the day of Ashura. Instead he should busy himself with weeping and mourning over the Imam (asws) as well as narrating His (Imam Hussain asws) tragedy. One should also tell one's family members to hold majalis over the martyrdom of the Imam (asws) and to continue to remember it in the same manner as they would for the death of their dearest children or relatives. One should also abstain from eating and drinking on the day of Ashura without making the niyyat of fasting. Then one should end his abstaining by eating something even if it is as little as a sip of water in the late afternoon. He should not abstain from eating and drinking for the entire day. One should not store any provisions in his house, should not laugh, and should not busy himself with pleasure or amusement on this day.
One should also call down the curses from Heaven upon the killers of Imam Hussain (asws) 1000 times by saying the following:

Çááåã ÇáÚä ÞÊáÉ ÇáÍÓíä Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã

O Allah lay a curse upon the killers of Imam Hussain (asws)

MAGHFIRAT-TAWBA (REPENTENCE)

MAGHFIRAT-TAWBA (REPENTENCE)

(1) Recite “Astaghfirullaah Rabbee Wa Atoobu Ilayh” as many times as possible, with sincerity.

(2) Try your best to wake up early before dawn to pray Namaaz-e-Tahajjud (Shab).There are fourty plus advantages in it.

(3) At any time pray two rak’at Namaaz, niyyat – Namaaz-e-Afw: In each rak’at recite Surah-e-Qadr after Al-Hamd and then recite fifteen times “Rabbee Afwaka”,then go in Rukoo, after its zikr recite ten times “Rabbee Afwaka”, then before going in Sajdah recite ten times “Rabbee Afwaka”, then in the Sajdah recite it ten times after its zikr, then in between two Sajdah again recite it ten times, then in the second Sajdah recite ten times the same, then before standing for the second rak’at recite ten times the same (Rabbee Afwaka), and pray the same way during the second rak’at also.

(4) Perform Sunnat ghusl, do Wudhoo, and recite Ziyarat of Bibi Fatima (S.A.) and then recite Istighfaar, or any Duaa for repentance. (ref. Mafaatihul Jinaan)

(5) Recite Duaa-e-Tawba. (ref. M.Jinaan or Majmooa)

(6) Recite these Surah of Holy Qur’an – S.Yaaseen, S.Tahreem, S.Waaqiah, S.Kaafiroon. Specifically, S.Tahreem carries Sawaab of Tawba-e-Nasooh.

(7) Recite Ziyarat of Imam Radhaa (A.S.) It is also a means of having our sins being pardoned.

These magnificent Duaas are also a means of wiping our sins away: Duaa-e-Mashlool, Duaa-e-Mujeer, Jawshan-e-Kabeer, Sayfi Sagheer, etc.

(9) Namaaz-e-Rasoolullaah (S.A.W.W.): Sins are forgiven and Hajaat fulfilled. Time for this prayer is preferable Friday morning, but it may be prayed on any time. (For the method of this Namaaz refer Mafaatihul Jinaan).

(10) Namaaz-e-Ameerul Mu’mineen (A.S.): Its merits are as mentioned above.

(11) Namaaz-e-Wasiyyat: To earn great Sawaab and sins forgiven, in between Maghrib and Ishaa pray two rak’at Namaaz, in each rak’at after Al-Hamd recite 13 times Surah Zilzaal and 15 times S.Tawheed. [*]

(12) Recitation of Salawaat is also a means of atonement for the past sins.

This is also very effective A’amaal to make our sins disappear from our A’amaalnaama: Perform Sunnat Ghusl then do Wudhoo and offer 4 rak’at Namaaz, in each rak’at after Al-Hamd recite 3 times S.Ikhalaas and once S.Maoozatain (S.Falak and S.Naas). After completing the Namaaz recite 70 times “Astaghfirullaah Rabbee Wa Atoobu Ilayh”, then recite the following Duaa:“Laa Hawla Walaa Quwwata Illaa Billaahil Aliyyil Adhweem, Yaa Azeezu Yaa Ghaffaar, Ighfirlee Dhunoobee, wa Dhunoobi Jamee’il Mu’mineena Wal Mu’minaat, Fa Innahoo Laa Yaghfirudh Dhunooba Illa Anta”.

(14) If one recites Surah As-Sajdah on the eve of Friday (Shab-e-Jummah) his or her A’amaalnaama (deed’s record) will be given in the right hand, and this will be an indication of being pardoned of every sin.

(15) Reciting Surah-e-Dukhaan in Wajib or Sunnat Namaaz is a way to clear our account of sins.

(16) Pray 2 rak’at Namaaz in which recite 60 times S.Ikhlaas (Qulhuwallaah…) in each rak’at after Al-Hamd.

(17) Recitation of Duaas specifically for Maghfirat can be found in Mafaatihul Jinaan and Pirmuhammad Ebrahim Trust’s Books of DUAA, which are there in various volumes.

Namaaz-e-Ghufayla.

(18) A very effective Namaaz for the forgiveness of sins is: Namaaz-e-Ghufayla. In between Maghrib and Ishaa prayers

…..;…pray 2 rak’at, in the first rak’at after Al-Hamd recite this – Wa Dhannooni Idh-Dhahaba Mughaadhiban Fadhanna Anlan Naqdira Alayhi Fa Naadaa Fidh-Dhulumaati An Laa Ilaaha Illaa Anta Sub’haanaka Innee Kuntu Minadh-Dhwaalimeen Fastajabnaa Lahoo Wa Najjaynaahu Minal Ghammi Wa Kadhaalika Nunjil Mu’mineen.

Then continue the Namaaz as usual until you reach the second rak’at, there after Al-hamd recite this:

Wa Indahoo Mafaatihul Ghaybi Laa Ya’alamuhaa Illaa Huwa Wa Ya’alamu Maa Fil Barri Wal Bahri Wamaa Tasqutu Min Waraqatin Illaa Ya’alamuhaa Walaa Habbatin Fee Dhulumaatil Ardhi Walaa Ratbin Walaa Yaabisin Illaa Fee Kitaabin Mubeen.

Then in Qunoot recite this: Allaahumma Bi Mafaatihul Ghaybil-Latee Laa Ya’alamuhaa Illaa Anta, Antu Swallee Alaa Muhammadin Wa Aali Muhammadin Wa An Taf’alabee…

here beg your Haajat ………………..

Then recite: Allaahumma Anta Waliyyu Ni’amatee Wal Qaadiroo Alaa Twalibatee Ta’alamoo Haajatee Fa As’aluka Bihaqqe Muhammadin Wa Aalihee Alayhimus-Salaam Lammaa Qadhwaytahaa Lee.

(19) Duaa of Hazrat Ilyaas (A.S.) in Sajdah: Ataraak Muazzabi wa qad adhma’tu laka hawaajiri, Ataraak Muazzabi wa qad affartu laka fitturaabi wajhee, Ataraak Muazzabi wa qad ijtanabtu lakal ma’aaswee, Ataraak Muazzabi wa qad as’hartu laka layli.

(In this Duaa the supplicant pleads to the Almighty that:
O Allaah, shall You, The Most Merciful, be happy to see me burning in fire and in great torments although I have been observing fasts in hot weathers and endured acute thirst, and I have restrained from sins to please You only, and will You be happy to see me burning while I have kept night vigils for Your worship?)

(20) To be pardoned of our sins, Imaam Ja’afar Saadiq (A.S.) said,: Everyday in the last Sajdah of the Naafilah of Ishaa, and especially on Thursday-night, recite this Duaa 7 times:
“Allaahumma Innee As’aluka Bi Wajhikal Kareem, Wa Ismikal Adhweem, Antuswalli Alaa Muhammadin Wa Aali Muhammad, Wa An Taghfira Lee Dhanbiyal Adhweem.”

(21) Rasoolullaah (S.A.W.W.) said that whoever recites these seven verses on theFriday-eve, when he shall die he shall be directly admitted to Jannat:
“Allaahumma Anta Rabbee. Answer: In the present time, the context of hijab is the modest covering of a Muslim woman. A woman should not show her beauty or adornments except what appears by uncontrolled factors such as the wind blowing her clothes, and the head covers should be drawn so as to cover the hair, the neck and the bosom. Islam has no fixed standard as to the style of dress or type of clothing that Muslims must wear.

Question: Can I remove my Hijab in time of danger?

Answer: If there is a real danger threatening you because of your Islamic dress, you can remove it only to the necessary extent.

Question: What are the minimum requirements of Hijab (Islamic modest dress) for a Muslim woman?

Answer: Woman should conceal her body and hair from a man who is non-Mahram, and as an obligatory precaution, she should conceal herself even from a Na-baligh boy who is able to discern between good and evil, and could probably be sexually excited. But she can leave her face and hands upto wrists uncovered in the presence of Na-Mahram, as long as it does not lead him to casting a sinful, evil glance or her to doing something forbidden; for in both these cases, she must cover them.

Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever are caused by any of the dengue family of viruses. Infection with one virus does not protect a person against infection with another. Dengue is spread by the bite of an Aedes mosquito. The mosquito transmits the disease by biting an infected person and then biting someone else.Dengue is diagnosed by a blood test.

The mosquitoes that transmit dengue live among humans and breed in discarded tires, flower pots, old oil drums, and water storage containers close to human dwellings. Unlike the mosquitoes that cause malaria, dengue mosquitoes bite during the day.

Dengue fever usually starts suddenly with a high fever, rash, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, and muscle and joint pain. The severity of the joint pain has given dengue the name "breakbone fever." Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite are common. A rash usually appears 3 to 4 days after the start of the fever. The illness can last up to 10 days, but complete recovery can take as long as a month. Older children and adults are usually sicker than young children.

The time between the bite of a mosquito carrying dengue virus and the start of symptoms averages 4 to 6 days, with a range of 3 to 14 days. An infected person cannot spread the infection to other persons but can be a source of dengue virus for mosquitoes for about 6 days.

There is no specific treatment for dengue. Persons with dengue fever should rest and drink plenty of fluids. They should be kept away from mosquitoes for the protection of others. Dengue hemorrhagic fever is treated by replacing lost fluids. Some patients need transfusions to control bleeding.

A few words about ‘Principles of Religion’ (Usul-e-Deen)
My son! May Allah guide you to the right path and protect you from all sins and mistakes. Remember, your first Islamic duty is to think and ponder deeply about the principles of religion (Usul-e-Deen). Make the foundation of faith strong by forceful arguments, have implicit faith in the Creator of the Universe, prophets and walis. Human being is born from human being. He is not an animal.

This does not mean that man should delve deep into the realm of knowledge and wisdom and continue reading voluminous books. Masoomeen (a.m.s) have also warned against going to deep and I also warn you.
What I mean to say is that you should read such books like ‘Aqaaed–e-Majlisi’ by Allama Majlisi (a.r.). Strengthen your belief by arguments, e.g. to prove the existence of Allah, study the creation of the world and its wonderful objects, and ponder that the creation cannot be any creation without a creator.
Amirul Momeneen Hazrat Ali (a.s) has said in ‘Nahjul Balagah’.

“These people think that this grass is such that no one has grown it! This is such a picture for which there is no painter! These people do not put forward any proof in support for their claim. How I wish they would think that nothing could be created without a creator, or how is it possible to create something without a creator.”
Son! May Allah save you from ‘Shirk’ (equating someone else with Allah). To prove that there is only one God, suffice is to say that if there were more than one god then they would have destroyed the world. Allah has said that if there were two gods, then both the earth and sky would have been destroyed.

Amirul Momeneen Hazrat Ali (a.s) has said :“If there was another god except Allah, then that god also would have had his messengers and prophets.’

Son! To prove prophethood, suffice is to say that it is imperative for Allah’s mercy, bounty and love that there should be a link between the creator and the creation – someone who can bring his ‘Faiz’ from there; and inform about good and evil, beneficial and harmful, who desists you from evil deeds and encourages you to do good deeds. Therefore to make you understand the real benefits and harms, there is no other way except ‘Wahi’ and ‘Illham’. Human beings, who are immersed in worldly desires, cannot get Wahi or Illham. They cannot reach that height. For that, it requires a ‘Soul’ who is above worldly desires, who is not a slave to Nafs-e-Ammara (soul which is attracted towards worldly desires), and who deserves Allah’s bounties and mercies by his spirituality and purity of soul..

It is essential to remember that each and every man cannot have knowledge of Wahi or Illham. For that, miracle is necessary whereby prophethood is proved, and whereby special relation between Allah and his messenger can be understood.

To prove that fact that Hazrat Mohammed Mustafa (s.a.w.) was the prophet of Allah, it is suffice to say that he proclaimed his prophethood in Mecca, announced that there is only one God and that he is His prophet and performed innumerable miracles. Now show anyone else, who can perform like him and who has his attributes! Allah never supports a liar nor does He give him any miracles.
Of all his miracles, the Holy Quran is sufficient to prove his prophethood, while it is very illogical to put miracle in the hands of a wrong claimant and it is tantamount to supporting a liar. Not only that, it is against the Justice of Allah.

From the prophethood of Hazrat Mohammed Mustafa (s.a.w.), the prophethood of one lakh twenty four thousand prophets is also proved. He had given information about all these prophets. Prophet never gives wrong information and he does not lie.

The proof that the Holy Quran is a miracle is that the Holy Hazrat prophet (s.a.w.) put two options before the scholars of Arabic language: Either bring its reply or have faith in my prophethood; otherwise get ready for war which will result in all sorts of humiliations and insults. Though they were scholars of Arabic language, they bore all the hardships but did not reply to the Holy Quran. This means that they could not reply. They were not in a position to reply otherwise they would not have suffered all these hardships.
It is wrong to think that ‘word’ cannot be a miracle. ‘Mojiza’ is a name of everything to which people cannot reply and it becomes evident that the person has special relation with Allah. The fact that Mojiza is beyond the capacity of human beings is proved and accepted by those who specialize in this subject. The scholars of Arabic language have accepted the miracle of Holy Quran in the same way as the magicians of Firaun accepted the miracle of the Asa (Stick) of Hazrat Moosa (a.s.), and they removed the Kasidas (poems) hanging in the Holy Kaaba in deference to the Ayaats of the Holy Quran.

The argument that applies to ‘Naboowate Mutlaqa’ also applies to ‘Vilayat-Mutlaqa’. There are clear Ahadees from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) about ‘Vilayat-e-Khassa,’ in which the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) has declared the “Khilafat” of Hazrat Ali (a.s.) and after him, his eleven progenies, as Imams. In addition, the deeds of these personalities are proofs in themselves.
The objections of the opponents are nothing but obstinacy. These objections have been replied in details in many books. This question has become so very clear that even the enemies have no doubts in their hearts, though they may deny it on the face.
As regards ‘Qayamat’ (day of judgement), it is the unanimous opinion of all sects of Islam that it should be accepted and cannot be denied. However, some scholars and philosophers have raised doubts about its details, but common man is not concerned with it in anyway. Suffice is to have faith in Qayamat which is clear from the many Ayaats and Ahaadis. We have even been shown the way to argue about it. That a just ruler must reward or punish everyone according to his deeds and that too, to the one who performed these deeds.
Just because body is destroyed is no argument that a the body cannot be brought back to its original state. When the ‘Creator can create Adam (from nothing), so what difficulty is there in creating it again when the ‘Madda’ (essence) is present in whatever state it may be. It is stated in the Holy Quran, “We will recreate you second time in the same way as We created you originally.”

What does Jahiliyah mean?

1. Islam calls the pagan life of Arabs `Jahiliyah' (ignorance). This label specifically identified the lifestyle to be found in the land of the Arabs before the Islamic Mission began. It included the beliefs and customs of the pagan Arabs who lived in a most decadent and perverse manner. This stage in history was full of chaos and corruption, and witnessed a decline in the sociology and ideology of the age. This was because the signs of truth had disappeared in that dark historical stage.
The aspects of deviation from truth and justice had become embodied in the society, much in the same manner as the perverse practices of Sodom and Gommorah in the time of Prophet Lot, so that evil was acknowledged as good and good was acknowledged as evil.
2. Islam calls this lifestyle of the Arabs desert dwellers, `Jahiliyah', to identify the ideological and social nature of that age and to compare it to general `jahiliyah' of nations and peoples that have arisen during man's evolution. Therefore, where we have written `jahiliyah' with a capital "J" we mean specifically the Age of Ignorance of the Arabs in the pre-Islamic age, and when it is specified with a "j" it refers to global ignorance at any stage in man's evolution where ignorance has buried truth, as is found in our social and ideological values today.
3. Islam calls that miserable historical period of Arab lifestyle `Jahiliyah' because it is a word which represents ignorant beliefs, practices, rules, laws, customs, values and behavior of a perverse society.
4. Islam does not call the Arabs, `Jahiliyah', before the emergence of its blessed mission because of academic ignorance, nor does it call them ignorant `jahilin' because of illiteracy nor for backwardness in the areas of sciences, so we understand that `Jahiliyah' had a specific and special meaning.
5. Islam called the Arabs of that age `jahiliyah' because even in the presence of academic and artistic knowledge, the social manner and behavior of the people and its acceptable lifestyle were such that the word, `Jahiliyah', is suitable for them. The Holy Qur'an has told us about other nations with capabilities in science, engineering, and skills. Still, it regarded them as `jahiliyah' (ignorant).
6. The Qur'an describes nature as equal among nations of `jahiliyah'. In the Qur'anic viewpoint, all of these nations were ignorant. We are able to understand this equality clearly through the comparison which the Qur'an has made between the backward state of Arabs and the developed state of nations before them.
7. Allah, the Exalted, says:
"What! have they not travelled in the earth and seen how was the end of those before them? They were more (in number) than those and mightier in strength, and greater are the relics (of their power) in the earth, but availed them not what they were earning. And when came unto them their apostles with clear proofs (of their truthfulness), exalted they in what they had with them of knowledge, but encompassed them that which they were wont to scoff." Holy Qur'an (40:82-83)
"Have they travelled not in the earth and seen how was the end of those before them? They were stronger than them in strength; and they dug up the earth and built on it more than what these did build; and there came unto them their apostles with clear proofs (miracles); (for) it is not Allah Who should do them (any) injustice, but they did injustice to their own selves. Then evil was the end of those who wrought evil, for belied they the signs of Allah, and at them they used to mock." Holy Qur'an (30:9-10)
"And how many of the generations We did destroy before them, they were (even) better in riches and in splendor. Say you (O Our Apostle Muhammad) As to those who are in error, the Beneficent (Allah) will certainly lengthen the span (of their) life; until they behold what they were promised, be it the chastisement (in this world) or the Hour (of Doom); Then shall they know who is worse placed and (who is the) weakest in forces!" Holy Qur'an (19:74-75)
In this manner, the Qur'an has revealed the depth and content of those nations to stress that scientific development of man and his civil advancement are not able to save him from the claws of deviation and take him out of the fangs of ignorance as long as he embellishes ignorant faith and embodies the same abnormal ignorant behavior of the general society.
Although these ignorant deviated nations are scattered throughout history and are different in scientific and civil levels, they share common factors. One mental state combines them together and unifies their deviated course. Allah, the Exalted, says:
"And those (pagans) who have no knowledge say: `Why does not Allah speak to us or a sign come to us?' Even thus said those before them, the like of what they say; their hearts are alike; We have indeed made clear the signs to people who are certainly sure." Holy Qur'an (2:118)
This similarity among the hearts of the deviated nations and peoples and the unity of the mental trend, which the Qur'an has revealed, is the common line which identifies all aspects of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance and is the center from which all activities of the ignorant man begins.
This similarity is the factor forming the identity and personality of this pre-Islamic nation. Also this description may be applied to all stages of human history whose generations have evolved into a devious and deviated system and refused to follow the straight path of truth and peace-the straight path of Allah, the law of the Lord, and the message of salvation.
When we examine Islamic texts and phrases about identifying and describing the life of (pre-Islamic period) ignorance, we are able to understand the meaning of the idiom `Jahiliyah' and the reason why the Qur'an has used it. Also we are able to understand why the same idiom has been applied to other nations throughout history.
We are able to understand this terminology and labelling once we learns of the ignorance in the history of past nations and its connected parts, when we follow the unity of the line and trends which associated `ahiliyah' through its effects and remains, and when we study the description of the Qur'an about the most important aspects of `Jahiliyah", its ways of thinking, and its psychological and behavioral trends.
When we reach this awareness, we find that `jahiliyah' means error, going astray, deviation from Allah's straight path, and negligence in His worship. That is because `jahiliyah', in the Qur'anic viewpoint, means a religion and lifestyle that follows a line contrary to the line of Islam in nature and aim. It follows the line of deviation from the path of true religon and Allah's `shari'ah' (law) which guides man.
`Jahiliyah' (ignorance) is a way of life. It has its own faith, way of thinking, and lifestyle including social manners, worship, values and concepts, viewpoint towards life, method to create civilization, and a direction for human activities in areas such as culture, art, literature, politics, economy, power, law and order, etc.
8. In order to unveil the ugly face of `jahiliyah' and discover the thread that entwines current ignorant international thoughts, it is better to return to the Holy Qur'an which describes `Jahiliyah', and its people, and the dimensions of their lifestyle and the features of their civilization and social system. Also it denotes their general framework and the basic rules of their formation. The Qur'an says:
"And none but the guilty led us astray." Holy Qur'an (26:99)
"And indeed they have led many astray, and nothing increases to the wrongdoers except perdition." Holy Qur'an (71:24)
"But if they answer you not, know that they only follow their low desires. And who is more erring than he who follows his low desires without any guidance from Allah? Surely Allah guides not the wrongdoing people." Holy Qur'an (28:50)
"But they rejected him, so We delivered him and those with him in the ark,..." Holy Qur'an (10:73)
"Then, after him We sent messengers to their people. They came to them with clear arguments, but they would not believe what they had rejected before. Thus do We seal the hearts of those who exceed the limits." Holy Qur'an (10:74)
"Then after them We sent Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his chiefs with Our signs, but they were arrogant, and they were a guilty people." Holy Qur'an (10:75)
"But, on account of the fear of Pharaoh and their chiefs persecuting them, none believed in Moses except a few of his people. And Pharaoh was truly high-handed in the land; and surely he was extravagant." Holy Qur'an (10:83)
"They said: O Hud, you have brought us no clear argument, and we are not going to desert our gods for your word, and we are not believers in you." Holy Qur'an (11:53)
"Say: O people, if you are in doubt as to my religion, (know that) I serve not those whom you serve besides Allah,..." Holy Qur'an (10:104)
"And when he holds authority, he makes effort in the land to cause mischief in it and destroy tilth and offspring; and Allah loves not mischief." Holy Qur'an (2:205)
"The life of this world is made to seem fair to those who disbelieve, and they mock those who believe..." Holy Qur'an (2:212)
"And they say: Our Lord, we only obeyed our leaders and our great men, so they led us astray from the (right) path." Holy Qur'an (33:67)
9. If we want more clarity about this collapsed civil situation, let's consider carefully the sermons of Imam Ali (a.s.) from Nahjul- Balagha, in which he explains the formation of `Jahiliyah' and analyses the form of its life and faith as follows: "Allah sent Muhammad (s.a.w.) as a warner (against vice) for all the worlds and a trustee of His revelation, while you people of Arabia were following the worst religion and you resided among rough stones and venomous serpents. You drank dirty water and ate filthy food. You shed blood of each other and cared not for relationship. Idols are fixed among you and sins are clinging to you."
Then, he (a.s.) speaks about the situations and conditions that preceded the Holy Prophetic mission as follows: "At that time people had fallen into vices whereby the rope of religion had been broken, the pillars of belief had been shaken, principles had been sacrileged, the system had become topsy turvy, openings were narrow, passages were dark, guidance was unknown and darkness prevailed.
Allah, The Most Beneficent, was being disobeyed. Satan was given support and belief had been foresaken. As a result, the pillars of religion fell down, its traces could not be discerned, its passages had been destroyed and its streets had fallen into decay. People obeyed Satan and tread his paths. They sought water from his watering places. Through them Satan's emblems were flying and his standard was raised in vices which trampled the people under their hoofs, and treaded upon them with their feet.
The vices stood on their toes (in full stature) and the people immersed in them were astrayed, perplexed, ignorant and seduced as though in a good house with bad neighbors. Instead of sleep they had wakefulness and for antimony they had tears in the eyes. They were in a land where the learned were bridled (mouths forced shut) while the ignorant were honored."( )
In another place, he (a.s.) says:
"Allah sent the Prophet at a time when the people were going astray in perplexity and were moving here and there in mischief. Desires had deflected them and self-conceit had swerved them. Extreme ignorance had made them foolish. They were confounded by the unsteadiness of matters and the evils of ignorance. Then the Prophet (s.a.w.) did his best in giving them sincere advice, himself trodding on the right path and called (them) towards wisdom and good counsel."( )
"I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger whom He deputized when the people were collecting in the abyss and moving in bewilderment. The reins of destruction were dragging them and the locks of malice lay fixed on their hearts." In another place of his sermons and sayings, we read another analysis of the nature of the ignorant man and his moral and psychological character. Imam Ali (a.s.) sheds bright light on the nature of this man in each period and stage and makes these sick symptoms as distinguishing qualities for the ignorant man and society.
Imam Ali (a.s.) speaks about evil, deviation and the call of Satan. He (a.s.) denotes that the followers of this call are ignorant:
"And the followers of fanaticism, the brothers of fanaticism and the horsemen of haughtiness and ignorance proved him (Prophet Muhammad, (s.a.w.)) to be true."
In another speech concerning `Jahiliyah', we read another analysis of this restless social situation and discover another dimension in its structure. He (a.s.) says:
"The conditions were full of distress. The hands were scattered. The majority was divided. They were in great anguish and under layers of ignorance. They buried their daughters alive, worshipped idols, disregarded kinship and practised robbery."( ) Imam Ali (a.s.) is not statisfied with speaking about `Jahiliyah', analysing its structure, and discovering the meanings of civilization and life therein. Rather, he warns people against the bad background of those ignorant thoughts. He says:
"Do not be like those rude people of `Jahiliyah' who did not exert themselves in religion nor use their intellects in the matter of Allah. They are like the breaking of eggs in the nest of a dangerous bird, because their breaking looks bad but keeping them intact would mean production of dangerous young ones."
Through contemplating deeply on these Islamic analyses and texts-the verses and sermons-and analysing their ideas, one will know the features of `Jahiliyah' society, recognize the clearest characteristics of the life in it, and know the most common elements among the various `jahiliyah' nations.
These texts altogether denote that the society of `jahiliyah' is deviated from what is right; it does not follow the teachings of religion, nor it seeks light from its system, nor it conforms to the principles of its law. Besides, they (the texts and verses) focus on the aspects and the common features among the international beliefs in the attitude towards the Divine Messages, in behavior, and the psychological situation of these ignorant beliefs.
These ignorant beliefs refuse and doubt the messages of Prophets, and insist on disbelief, going astray, and following low desires.
The definite result of this rejection is that the refusing person has followed a material, animalistic direction. Thus, lust overcomes him, pleasures lead him, because he has broken off his relation with Allah. So he has inclined to the earth, deified the volatile world of lust, and worshipped the turns of the self.
It is natural that this material and ignorant life is full of corruption, crimes, and vanity.
We have read that the Qur'an describes these ignorant thoughts and noted their diseases and corrupt aspects. The Qur'an has shown the most prominent, sick aspects of those ignorant thoughts as: oppression, crime, haughtiness, extravagance, arrogance, deviation, doubt, corruption and destruction on earth, bloodshedding, sneering at truth, blindly following the leaders of deviation and corruption, and following lusts and low desires.
After this Qur'anic discussion, we have read that Imam Ali (a.s.) has analyzed the most prominent aspects of `Jahiliyah'life. He (a.s.) has stressed those aspects which the Qur'an has stressed such as: decline, degradation, behavioral and ideological fall. He (a.s.) refers to bloodshedding, disbelieving in Allah, refusing the messages of the Prophets, ignorance in religion, shaky pillars of religion, going astray, bewilderment, haughtiness, spite, fanaticism, victory of lust and low desires, and so on.
With this Islamic analysis which we have read in the Qur'anic texts and Imam Ali's sermons, we are able to know that the pre-Islamic society is the one which refuses to believe in Allah and deviates in its behavior and life system from Allah's right path, irrespective of being an ignorant society like the Bedouins and pastorals or being a society which lives in the age of the atom, computer, space travel, etc.
`Jahiliyah' is a civil situation having behavioral, psychological, and physical elements. It has no relation to the degree of science and knowledge existing in the society. It is just as Imam Ali (a.s.) says:
"The worst religion, and the worst house."
Whenever this mark of evil and corruption, is found in faith, the social system and the method of life, then we are able to call the person who lives in its shade as ignorant `jahili', and we are able to describe the human life following it as `jahiliyah'. For this reason, the Holy Qur'an calls the deviated person, `dhal' (one who has gone astray), and those who deviate `dhaloon'. `Dhal' is the person who does not know the way and blunders far away from the truth and guidance whether in his thinking and faith or in his worship, life system, and way of his dealings.
Describing the ignorant life and society, Imam Ali (a.s.) has often used the word `hayara' (bewildered) in his sermons. That is because bewilderment, worry, estrangement, uneasiness, etc., are the most prominent morbid symptoms from which the ignorant person suffers. All these diseases hit him because he is deviated from Allah's path and His law.
Thus estrangement, bewilderment, going astray, and uneasiness are the distinguishing and essential marks of the ignorant society which is full of vanity, oppression, corruption, and low desires.
Islam has shown that the ignorant person is deviated, lost, bewildered and restless, for such a person suffers from mental disorders. This condition has an influence on all aspects of his life.
So, man finds himself standing before two ways in every period or age. These two ways are: 1) The way of guidance and belief; and, 2) The way of ignorance and misguidance.
The Qur'an highlights this in the following verse:
"Is it then the judgment of ignorance that they desire? And who is better than Allah to judge for a people who are sure?" Holy Qur'an (5:50)
Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.) has stated:
"Judgement is two kinds: the judgement of Allah, the Great and Almighty, and the judgement of the people of ignorance `Jahiliyah'. So, whoever misses Allah's judgement, surely will judge according to the judgement of `Jahiliyah'." To give man a clear idea of the aims and purposes which Islam strives to achieve, the Qur'an tells him about these aims and purposes:
"And thus did We reveal to you an inspired Book by Our command. You knew not what the Book was, nor (what) Faith (was), but We made it a light, guiding thereby whom We please of Our servants..." Holy Qur'an (42:52)
"...and We have revealed the Book to you explaining all things, and guidance and mercy and good news for those who submit (themselves to Allah)." Holy Qur'an (16:89)
The Qur'an also describes the faithful believers, those who follow the way of faith and know the right path. It has shown that they are guided aright and live in safety, security, and peace: "Those who believe and mix not up their faith with iniquity -those are they for whom is security and they are (the ones) guided aright." Holy Qur'an (6:83)
That is because they have believed in Allah and the light that has come from Him. They have followed the way of righteousness and have not mixed their belief with oppression nor deviated from Allah's path and His `shari'ah'. Rather they have conformed to Allah's laws, commands and teachings. Therefore, they are rightly guided, safe, and happy here and in the Hereafter.
Unlike the true believers, those who have led themselves towards error, deviation and misguidance and turned away from Allah's remembrance, have turned their lives into an inferno and a torment. The Qur'an describes their life and end as follows:
"And whoever turns away from My monition, verily his shall be a life straitened, and We shall raise him up on the Day of Judgment, blind. He shall say: `O, my Lord! why have you raised me blind? Whereas indeed I was seeing (before)?' (Allah) will say: `Thus (is the recompense) for did come to you Our signs but you did ignore them; and even so are you forsaken this Day.'"
Holy Qur'an (20:124-126)
Because of their turning away from Allah's remembrance, refusing and disobeying the true will, they have gone astray. They have blundered in the darkness of ignorance and deviation. Allah, the Exalted, says:
"...and whoever disobeys Allah and His Apostle, indeed he has strayed off a manifest straying." Holy Qur'an (33:36)
"Have you then seen him who takes as his god his vain desires, and Allah has allowed him to be astray (with his), knowing (it), and set a seal upon his ear and his heart and caused upon his eyes a veil; who can guide him after (his being allowed to stray by) Allah? What! Will you not then reflect?" Holy Qur'an (45:23)
So, this is the reality of `jahiliyah', i. e., deviation from the religion of Allah, refusing His message, disobeying His Apostles, adoring lusts and temptations, and obeying the tyrants and the aggressors. Finally, if we study similar ideas of ignorant life, we will reach the following conclusions:
`Jahiliyah' (Global ignorance) was a social disease. It was a psychological state afflicting individuals, peoples, and nations in each period and generation. The aspects of this ignorant life are quite similar regardless of time and place. Allah, the Exalted, says:
"In their hearts is a disease, Allah increases their disease,..." Holy Qur'an (2:10)
"And say those (pagans) who know not: `Why does not Allah speak to us or a sign come to us?' Even thus said those before them; the like of what they say. Their hearts are all alike; We have indeed made clear the signs to people who are certainly sure." Holy Qur'an (2:118)
The evidence to this similarity is the long history of mankind, the succession of nations and offsprings, the appearance of the symptoms of the ignorant life in many generations and nations in each period of history, and the deviation from the right path and the call to guidance and the Prophets.
On the pages of history and life's stage, we see standing examples belonging to the past and present life of mankind-we see atheism, oppression, tyranny, terrorism, bloodshedding, loss of truth, persecution of the oppressed, exploiting the poor, and widespread vices.
These are the reflections of the ignorant current on the life of mankind. This current represents deviation from the truth, justice, belief. Consequently, bewilderment, going astray, and deviation from the straight path are the most important marks of `Jahiliyah' from which man suffered too much crises and endured their pains.

The Mother of the Twelfth Imam

Dr. Jalali: What is the name of the mother of the Master of the Age?
Mr. Hoshyar: His mother was introduced in the sources with various names. Among them are: Narjis, Sayqal, Rayhana, Sawsan, Khumt, Hukayma, and Maryam. If you keep the two following points in mind you will understand the source of this confusion:
(a) Imam Hasan 'Askari had several slave girls with different names. On two occasions Hakima Khatun has mentioned these slave girls. At one time she came to visit Imam Hasan 'Askari and saw him seated in the courtyard of his house, surrounded by his slave girls. She asked him: "Which one of these girls is going to be the mother of your successor?" The Imam replied: "It is Sawsan ……Bihar al-anwar, Vol. 51, p. 17.

In another report Hakima relates the event of the birth of the twelfth Imam, cited earlier, in which Imam Hasan 'Askari requests her to spend the night of 15th Sha'ban (255 AH/870 CE) in his house because a child was going to be born. At that point Hakima asked him: "Which of your maidens is the mother of the child?" The Imam said: "It is Narjis." Hakima said: "Yes, I too like her the most among your slave girls….Ibid., p. 25.

From these two and other similar reports it appears that Imam Hasan 'Askari had several slave girls.
(b) As stated earlier Imam Hasan 'Askari's child was born in an extremely dangerous situation because the 'Abbasid caliphs and even some members of the Hashimite clan had been aware of the approaching time for the birth of the Mahdi, who was to end unjust and tyrannical rule and establish justice and equity. Hence, the agents of the 'Abbasids were guarding the homes of the Hashimites in general, and the Imam in particular, day and night. The secret agents of the caliph were involved in searching for the newborn in these homes to deliver him to the caliph.
Having noted these two things, it must be pointed out that it was certainly decreed by God that in such a threatening environment and in such a home of importance a son had to be born to Imam Hasan 'Askari who should remain protected from all sorts of dangers. It was for this reason that all necessary precautions had to be taken. Hence, to begin with, according to the related accounts, there were no signs of pregnancy in his mother.
Moreover, Imam Hasan 'Askari did not reveal her real name. In addition, at the time of the delivery only Hakima Khatun, and probably some slave girls were present. This is despite the fact that usually in such circumstances assistance is sought from a midwife and other experienced women. In fact, nobody knew whether Imam Hasan 'Askari was married or not and, if he was married, no one knew the identity of his wife.
On the fifteenth night of Sha'ban when it was completely dark, at night, the child was born under fear and veiled circumstances. This too happened in a home where there were several slave girls of whom none had any visible signs of pregnancy. At the time of delivery, with the exception of Hakima, there was no one present and no one dared to reveal the situation.
For a long while the matter was kept a secret and only later the close, trusted companions of Imam Hasan 'Askari began to inquire and were told about it. Some among the followers believed that God had favored Imam Hasan 'Askari with a son, whereas others denied it. Since all the slave girls lacked visible signs of pregnancy, the story about the dispute over the identity of the child's mother was naturally bound to occur. Some knew the mother to be Sawsan, some Narjis, some Sayqal, and so on. Nobody, except a select few, knew the true state of affairs. But they were not allowed to divulge that information. Even Hakima, who was the witness and was present during the birth of the twelfth Imam, for the sake of protecting the identity of his mother, sometimes used to mention her name variantly as Narjis, Sayqal or Sawsan, and at other time, as a precautionary measure she would ascribe the child to Imam Hasan 'Askari's mother.
In the year 262 AH/877 CE Ahmad b. Ibrahim came to see Hakima Khatun, the daughter of Imam Jawad. He spoke to her from behind the curtain and asked her about her beliefs. She introduced her Imams and mentioned Muhammad b. Hasan as her last Imam. Ahmad said: "Were you yourself witness to the matter (of his birth) or are you saying this on the basis of what you have heard?" She replied saying that the matter was according to what Imam Hasan 'Askari had written to his mother. So Ahmad went on to inquire as to whom the Shi'a should follow in that matter. Hakima said that they should follow Imam Hasan 'Askari's mother. Ahmad objected saying: "In this will of testament should we follow one woman?" Hakima responded that actually Imam Hasan 'Askari was following his forefather, Imam 'Ali b. Husayn in this matter. Imam Husayn had made his sister Zaynab his legatee and the knowledge that was possessed by 'Ali b. Husyan was ascribed to Zaynab. Imam Husyan had done that, added Hakima, so that the matter about the Imamate of 'Ali b. Husayn would remain secret. Then she said: "You are the people who know the traditions. Have not you been informed that the inheritance belonging to the ninth among the descendants of Husayn will be distributed while he is alive?"………….Kamal al-din, Vol. 2, p. 178.

As you can see, in this report Hakima has not responded to the inquiry about the last Imam's birth directly. In fact, she has attributed the story to Imam Hasan 'Askari's mother. It is also likely that out of fear for revealing the true state of affairs to the reporter she employed 'prudential concealment' (taqiyya). Or, she simply wanted to present the report in a manner that would generate bewilderment. However, the same Hakima in another place relates the event that led to the marriage of Imam Hasan 'Askari with Narjis Khatun and the birth of the Mahdi, to which she was herself a witness, in great detail. She ends this account with the following statement: "I now see my master (i.e., the twelfth Imam) regularly and talk to him….Kamal al-din, Vol. 2, pp. 99-103

In short, the differences of opinion regarding the name of the last Imam's mother is not something unusual. On the contrary they point to the most difficult and even frightful situation at that time. Moreover, the number of the slave girls that belonged to Imam Hasan 'Askari and the extreme precaution that he took in keeping the matter secret would have necessarily created confusion. It is not unlikely that the story about the serious dispute that erupted between the Imam's mother and brother, Ja`far, the Liar, could have been part of a state conspiracy masterminded by the caliph in order to extort information about Imam Hasan 'Askari's son.
According to Shaykh Saduq in his Kamal al-din, at the time when Imam Hasan 'Askari's mother got into the dispute with Ja'far, his brother, over the inheritance and when the matter was referred to the caliph, one of the slave girls belonging to Imam Hasan 'Askari by the name of Sayqal claimed to be pregnant. Sayqal was brought to the palace of the caliph, Mu'tamid, and was kept under strict guard and under the watchful eyes of the midwives and other women in the palace to determine the fate of her pregnancy. At that very time, political turmoil as a consequence of the insurrection led by Saffar, the death of 'Abd Allah b. Yahya, and the revolution of the Zanj engulfed the caliphal state. The 'Abbasids were forced to abandon Samarra. Hence, they became occupied with their own troubles and gave up the surveillance of Sayqal's pregnancy…..Kamal al-din, Vol. 2, p. 149.

There is also another reason for differences in the name of the mother of the twelfth Imam. It is possible to say that all those names were given to one and the same person. That is to say that the twelfth Imam's mother had several names. This explanation is not far fetched because it was customary among Arabs to give several names to a person of importance.
The evidence for this is provided in Shaykh Saduq's Kamal al-din. He himself has related from Ghiyath that Imam Hasan 'Askari's successor was born on Friday, and his mother was Rayhana, who was also known as Narjis, Sayqal, and Sawsan. Since at the time of her pregnancy she had some kind of brilliance over her face, she was known as Sayqal…^..Kamal al-din, Vol. 2, p. 106

To sum this discussion up, it is important to remind ourselves that in spite of some ambiguity in identifying the actual name of the twelfth Imam's mother, there is no doubt that she existed. In other words, such an ambiguity does not detract authenticity from her existence. As you have noticed all the Imams, including Imam Hasan 'Askari, have informed about the existence of a son for the latter. In addition, Hakima, the daughter of Imam Jawad, was a highly trustworthy woman who reported in detail the birth of the Imam. Moreover, a number of trustworthy companions and servants of Imam Hasan 'Askari saw the son and testified to his existence, regardless of his mother's name

New Domes on the Holy Shrines of Imam Al-Kadhim (a) and Imam Al-Jawad (a)

Replacement operations of the golden dome and minaret of the holy shrine of Imam Musa Ibn Jafar Al-Kadhim (peace be upon him) and Imam Muhammad Ibn Ali Al-Jawad (peace be upon him) in the Iraqi city of Kadhimiyya have been completed. The celebration held on September 14 with the presence of Iraqi authorities and the manager of the shrine.
The area of the dome of the holy shrines of the Imams (peace be upon them) is 335 square meters. The constructors used 10 thousand and 261 golden bricks for the dome and 1416 golden bricks for the three minarets.
The reconstruction and replacement work at the the holy shrine lasted for one and a half years.

Abu Basir narrates: After the martyrdom of Imam Sadiq (AS) I went to his house to pay my condolences to his wife Hamidah. Upon seeing me, she began to weep and I wept as well.
Then she said Abu Basir! If you were here on the last moments of Imam Sadiq's (AS) life, you would have witnessed something extraordinary.
”What is that?” I asked.
She answered:
”It was in the last moments of the Imam's life when he opened his blessed eyes and said:
Gather all of my family and relatives now and bring them to me!? Thus, we gathered every one of the relatives until no-one was left. He turned to them and said,
”We will not intercede ₁ for those who belittle ₂ Salat ₃.”
