Why I Haven't Been Wearing Plus Size Pants

I wear a lot of dresses, I'm thinking about maybe wearing something else...

Yep, I love dresses and skirts to be honest. I don't know where or when I feel out of love with pants but I guess I've subscribed a little too hard to the no pants dance. The truth is probably a combination of things. First thing would be style choices generally lacking in giving me the feels. Awkward cuts, boring colors used to be the issue, it's much better now. Then fit, most plus pants have been cut for hour glass figures and short of leggings, jeggings and the like - I just didn't love how they looked on me.

Fall feels like the perfect time to get back into wearing separates, specifically pants. I'm easing my way in with the most cozy outfit possible but the 70's inspired silhouette and retro spice color are so chic. Eloquii is a long running favorite because I can count on the quality, the styles are always runway inspired - we love that and I can generally find things that I don't see at every other retailer. The funny thing about life is when you say you want something, you need to be prepared to receive it.

I've been saying to both my dad and Karla that I wanted to do more speaking engagements this year. There are so many panels and places to speak and a great number of topics that I can share extensive knowledge or experience so why am I not getting these opportunities? My attitude was all jacked up. I for one, assumed people should know my work, history and capabilities without me really sharing details. I'm big on the idea that creating content online doesn't make you an expert in a lot of places so how would they know what I can do beyond cool pictures and fun videos.

As soon as I began to speak my truth to power and say what I wanted aloud to other humans who where actually listening and in positions of power, opportunities came. This past weekend I had the pleasure of speaking at Create & Cultivate - long running on my list of speaking gigs I wanted, it was amazing!

I was reminded that so much of what I love about this job has nothing to do with style. It's more about connecting with people, being a connector of people and sharing messages that are important to me that can help someone else.

Don't be afraid to put yourself "out there", say what you want and give people listening a reason to say, "Wow!"

Discovering Your Purpose

I've always felt lead by the divine. But lately

I've been seeking higher purpose. My life has been incredibly blessed in that I've always been able to hear that little voice inside me. The one that tells you what you want, how to get it and when to move. Lately I've felt like I've relied a little too much on that nudge rather than being proactive in my thinking around next steps in life and not just what is my purpose - I feel pretty clear that on what I'm here to do but how to elevate and dream bigger and do more are my goals right now.

Part of why I wanted to leave New York is because I felt like I was just letting life happen to me, the good and the bad. Being passive in your life is the worst thing. Though this move to California has me feeling renewed in many ways, I want to make sure I'm not slipping back into a passive mindset. I'm going to be challenging myself to do new things weekly and will be documenting my adventures on my youtube channel.

I included this cotton embroidered dress in a recent haul but little did I know it would become one of my summer favorites. The Evolution of the Plus Size Bikini

Something really interesting is happening and I couldn't be happier.

When "fatkinis" first started popping up they almost all looked the same. High waisted briefs (I'm still a fan but not a must), really structured bra tops and almost always tropical prints. While there's certainly a market for this type of suit, it was the only of it's kind.

I think we were all just so happy to have the option for a two piece that we glamoured for every one that popped up on the internet in our sizes. What's happening now is that our actual taste is being accounted for a little bit more. Just like with clothes, plus size women have different personal taste and I think that was never really accounted for with swim. Preppy, edgy, minimal, boho swimwear all exists in smaller sizes but we were all resigned to one style bikini for a long time.

Some of my favorite styles are a bit less conventional - especially for plus size options. Mixing and matching is definitely a cool way to convey personal style. I'm also loving being a bit more daring and wearing suits with less coverage. Less fabric feels really good in the water. I highly recommend. I went to a tie-dye party and ended up walking around bottomless.

I know. I know... You go to someone's home, someone you don't know. You keep you pants (or skirt on)! But, I had a really good excuse for ending up in my panties. I'd spent the morning doing my nails and have a pretty chill Saturday and on my way back to my apt texted my babe Margie to say hi. She immediately called me like "GIRL! Where you at?"

She asked if I wanted to go to a tie-dye party and the obvious answer was yes! I ran home grabbed a few white cotton pieces and we were on our way. The party was in the most charming LA backyard, there was a bull dog and kombucha cocktails - life is good.

After dying my first piece - this white ASOS Curve shirt dress, I noticed that I somehow managed to get dye on my gold skirt. What the frig! No one else spilled anything how am this clumsy honestly?

Someone jokingly said well, you should dye it. The thought had crossed my mind but it's my skirt, that I'm wearing and... do I just walk around in my underwear? Long story short, yes. Full disclosure I did wait for the one straight man to leave and it was a more comfortable gang of gals and gays. All in all I'm really glad I did, because this skirt is amazing! The Best Mattress for Plus Size People

I didn't buy the hype, I was really wrong!

When I was moving from NYC to LA the thing I mulled over most was getting rid of my bed. I bought it about 6 years ago and at the time it was quite literally the best mattress I'd ever slept on. I spent weeks researching and invested quite a pretty penny. But I was moving across country and very much wanted a fresh start with new things and new energy.

I'd hard about Big Fig via few fellow influencers and then at an event. I sat on the bed back then but wasn't sure what actual sleep would feel like. When I locked in my apt, I'd remember the team had reached out to me to give the bed a try and since I wasn't going to tote my massive king size bed across country, it as the perfect time to try something new.

Being bigger, I'm very particular about how I sleep. Comfort is everything. Soft beds kill my back and body, thin springy mattresses are a nightmare and honestly, I hate memory foam. Even the fancy smacy very expensive kind aren't really built for bigger bodies. I feel like I just sink into the foam and it conforms around my sunken body only to make moving or rolling over feel impossible.

My Big Fig arrived shortly after I got to my new place and my first night blew my mind. Wait? What the heck is this bed made from? My sister came to see me a day or so after I moved and slept with me, we both were shook. This bed is SO comfortable. It's immensely supportive all while cushy and has the perfect amount of bounce.

Every detail was considered in the construction. It's pretty incredible! Full disclosure, I was gifted the mattress but not forced to write about it without actually living with the bed! How Negativity is Affecting Your Style

This might be a little direct but, maybe it's us.

Today I posted a video on my youtube channel as the kick off to a new series called Me Vs. Model. This isn't to compare myself to a model except to say that I am different. It's not to see who wore it best but to say we are both deserving of clothes we like.

I'm sure I'm not the first human to post side by side photos of them-self and a brand image but here's why I thought it important. As both an "influencer" and a seasoned marketing person, I've had the unique experience of being a person who creates what I feel is quality content - often celebrated by media and organizations that I greatly respect all while having the marketing data and brand experience to know that I'm also not what a lot of women want to see (even when they look exactly like me).

We see a smaller model who is little in the middle with a big booty, you buy the jeans. We see an apple shaped woman at even a size 18, they are needing to mark product down because you don't shop when you see yourself.

In my video I talk a little bit about body worship and how it affects our what we put into our carts, purchase and often get it home only to hate it. Did you buy it because you like it or is this something we snagged because the model looked "hot". There are very few brands who do this - probably because it's expensive but wouldn't it be fantastic to see clothes on a variety of sizes and body types? My hope would be that the more we see ourselves reflected the more we can come to a place of self acceptance so that a mirror image of ourselves doesn't scare us way from shopping.

Shopping to fix "flaws" rather than as a creative expression of self will leave you covered but robbed of the joy that fashion can bring. Starting with a self or societal imposed "negative" is the opposite of fashion freedom.

Heads are turning left and right and people are shook at her outfit, hair in the wind and overall glorious-ness of this bad bih. You were never going to have that moment as a plus size woman until recently. Swimwear was nothing short of abysmal. I'm sure the powers that be figured that if fat women didn't even "want" cute clothing we certainly didn't care about what we look like in a swimsuit.

Make it black, use as much fabric as possible and just hide as much of her as you can, right? Enter the the powerful interwebz. Fatties screamed, yelled, stomped and the "fatkini" triumphed. Thing is, I felt like the one piece was left behind! I love a bikini as much as the next fat beaching bombshell, but sometimes I want a one piece, I just do.

Shopping at Forever 21 When You Aren't 21

I never feel like I have the luxury to ignore any retailer offering clothing in my size, here's what that means...

Shopping while plus size often means having to keep every option open. I've never really felt like I had the luxury to count out any retailer offering my size because the sky isn't the limit when it comes to stylish clothing in size fat.

Of course I have my favorites like Eloquii and ASOS for affordable stylish pieces with quality that I can generally count on but there are places that I rarely shop that I should look into a bit more. I'm thinking of starting a series either here or on my Youtube channel were I shop more unexpected (for me) places.

I was at Culver City Mall recently and one of the women working in the store I was in was wearing this dress. She was more of an in-betweenie so I just automatically assumed she purchased the dress somewhere with sizes not accessible to me.

After creepily staring at her for a while I finally decided to ask where she bought the dress. When she told me Forever 21 just a few stores down that same week and that there were a ton of them there, I shot out of the store I was in to go cop it! The thing is, Forever 21 is often a store I ignore because it's often a bit jr. high for me. I don't claim to be the most refined person in the world as I'm often attracted to kitsch and trends but I'm at minimum a high school senior lol. So call this a reminder for you and I that we really need to look everywhere not to miss out on styles that aren't otherwise available!

Why I Moved To California

The thing strangers on the interwebs have asked most is why I decided to leave NYC and come to LA. The thing is

I've lived in Manhattan nearly my entire adult life. I left Philly at like 22 years old and never looked back. My New York story began like most peoples, I saw the city, loved the city, just had to live there, you know the one. Growing up in Philly was incredible and it will always be home because almost my entire family lives there but I quickly knew I wanted to be in the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps.

The thing about never sleeping is that it can grow old. Not for everyone but it did for me. I came to the city and grinded! A 20 something year old Vice President at my former PR agency to going out on my own and landing work on campaigns that I couldn't have imagined. Starting my blog and switching gears which in a lot of ways felt like starting over in my 30's but here we are and I'm loving every second of it.

I met friends that I call family, lived in some really cool apartments, shared so much love - and loss. It's funny, someone left a comment on a recent post on Instagram where I asked everyone to share their assumptions about me - they said "You moved to California to run away from something or someone." and the truth is that I wasn't running away from someone, I was running toward myself.

New York was good to me. It's a city that can eat you alive and I'm so incredibly proud of what I was able to accomplish and the woman that I became there. But I want more than grind and hustle. I want to get back to me. Mentally, spiritually and physically. It felt like the right time. I'm secure in who I am and my capabilities but also still flexible and want to grow.

California for me has always represented more of the grown up life I've wanted. It's still a city but I have access to nature. The quality of life is so much higher than Manhattan and hello, sunshine...eternal sunshine!

I follow accounts that not only attract me aesthetically but that inspire and feed my creative soul. Cool, beautiful, bad ass people who spread messages of inclusion, positivity, self worth, human rights, true feminism and all around good vibes.

I met Kaguya on a modeling job for Universal Standard and not only is she gorgeous but she's ballsy and cool af. Her account is unabashed body positive, sex positive and just lovely to look at.

Nnenna is based in Norway but her style reminds me of this delicious mix of what I imagine 1960's Harlem might of been like with a dash of London cool. Endless outfit inspo!

Enam is the fat queen teen age Kellie needed. I'm so grateful to be that for some but she's one of those people I look at and see my body, my round face, my complexion and seeing her beauty helps me see mine. Her style is slick and her swag is slicker.

Outside of mother Pat McGrath, I'm not sure I've ever wanted a makeup artist to do my make up more that Celine. The YSL beauty ambassador is everything. Forward, creative, an artist. WHAT TO WEAR TO WORK WHEN YOU'RE FAT

Finding cute plus size work clothes is hard but pushing past fat phobia in the work place is harder

If I'm going to be honest I don't think I've ever worked in a safe space. We know how deeply sexism and racism are embedded into the work place but there are rules. Rules that protect and can even somewhat deter bad behavior. POC and women of course have to deal with vile micro aggressions but fat phobia and fat shaming are allowed. Like really allowed.

Even though I've always worked in creative environments/agencies being fat would always leave me cringing at the crazy offensive crap people from intern to CEO would spout. The crazy thing is these things where never said about me (not to my face anyway) but that they are even being said would leave me quietly ready to trip someone and wishing they'd chip a tooth.

Everything from fat jokes when they skipped a workout, self deprecating comments about how what the eat for lunch would magically make them fat, liking certain foods meant "I'm such a fat girl today" to the pure and simple fact that many men don't at all know how to relate to women they don't want to sleep with or consider "sexy". Thin women often disregard fat women as not "sexy enough" to "be on their level".

They might make assumptions about you. You're lazy, not capable... I've had a boss who would literally have me create ideas, do the work and then not invite me to a pitch meeting because he was trying to through "lookers" at the client. It's gross and it's wrong.

The size of your body doesn't at all affect your worth as a person or as an employee. Not finding someone sexy is not a reason to hold them back and there are fat, brilliant, beauty women kicking ass and taking names in every industry.

My favorite what to get dressed for work in my fat and yep sexy bod is a modern/trendy blazer, blouse and really cool pants. I'm happy to have set up my life so that I can go to meetings in track pants or a ball gown but when I do need to tap into corporate Kellie - she usually looks like this. xo

I wore this suit over the New Year holiday and before I could share it was gone!

This blue velvet dream was almost immediately sold out and so many of you were gutted. I had to let you know it's back! There's the coolest tiny pleats that give the illusion of corduroy and the fit is impeccable. I generally have a hard time with Eloquii's fit because things are very much cut for hour glass bodies. Pants nip way in at the waist, shoulders are narrow leaving me to size up in just about everything. I do it because the style of the clothes is often exactly what I'm looking for and the quality is top notch.

I did size up in this suit and I'm glad because of the length but if you aren't as tall as me (5'10) or are more narrow on the top you should be good with your normal size. This suit looks amazing with a blouse, a teeshirt, just about anything honestly. I'm so glad it's back because it's def a keeper!

Valentine's Day is sooner than you think but should we give a f*ck?

I'll admit, I'm a romantic. Shower me with attention, affection, gifts (big or small), all the ooey gooey teens in love nonsense. I'm here for it all. Valentine's Day has always been weird for me. I always felt single or in a relationship with dudes who were legit terrible at it or with someone who didn't really see it as important.

It sucked. But instead of feeling all angsty or anxiety ridden about what it won't be I think this year I'm going to make it what I want to be. Be vocal in my desires, use my voice - crazy how that's hard in some spaces and so easy in others.

I'm also inspired to have some cool Gal'entine moments. Especially since I love my friends so much I should probably just marry one of them anyway. Any takers? While I figure out my life and what the hell I want from the most forced romantic day of the year, I'll be dancing around in red dresses waiting to be swept off my feet. HOW I'M RECOVERING MY WINTER SKIN

Now that it's freezing, my skin is in full revolt and here's what I'm doing about it!

I've had to update my skincare routine. It's like one day you're walking around in the world living your best life, glowing and then you look dull, dry and sad all overnight. A few OD blasts of my old school radiator heating, a week or two of icy temps and my radiance has all but dried up!

So, I went through my beauty arsenal and to dig up a few favorites and some new to me magical elixirs to create a regimen that restored my hydration.

Paula's Choice Cleansing Oil is great for removing my makeup without stripping my skin like makeup remover wipes. It's a great first cleanse for a full face of makeup or a morning cleanse when my skin has just absorbed my nighttime lotions and potions.

Boscia Sake Hydrating Brightening Essence is my tried and true. I used it and taken it away several times just trying to prove to myself how magical it is. You might think this extra step isn't necessary but I can firmly say, I see the difference of how my other products work when I don't layer this on first. It's the like ultimate skincare primer. Prepping my skin for serums.

Youth to the People Hyaluronic is a cut me and I will bleed it type of product. This is a holy grail because not only is it one of the ultimate anti aging potions but it's also incredibly hydrating and plays well with other serums.

OleHenriksen Truth Serum a vitamin C serum that not only brightens and helps firm the skin it's also an excellent pre moisturizer serum that helps hold in hydration. I've found it also helps with texture. PS it smells really good!

Laneige Water Sleeping Mask will blow your mind. First of all the entire Laneige brand is quickly becoming a favorite. The sleeping mask is bomb because it doesn't just sit on your skin to end up on your pillow case. It absorbs pretty quickly, is lightweight but highly effective. I wake up looking more "alive" and well rested no matter how I actually slept because of this mask.

3 HABITS OF SUCCESSFUL FREELANCERS

I've been working independently for years and good habits = happiness and monetary success

Let me start by saying that I'm in no way shape or form perfect or know all there is not know about this but I've been working independently as both a blogger and Marketing/PR consultant since 2010 and there are a few things I've learned about myself along the way.

1. Structure is critical. We all work differently but some degree of structure is the only way to survive. When it comes to scheduling I for example don't like my day planned out hour by hour but I do like a list of to do and action items to cross off of a list. Structure can also mean where you work. I've tried setting up a home office - I literally never sat in it. That room serves me much better as an extended closet and place to keep incoming samples and products I want to feature. What works best for me is sitting at my dinning table. My living room is bright, airy, minimal and inspired. This gives me that mental push to sit at my laptop and focus. When I want a change of scenery or need the energy of other humans, I love sitting in my fav coffee shop while doing administrative work.

2. Networking is longevity. An old boss once told me that Kellie, who is allergic to cats and loves ramen is a lot harder to fire than kbrown@company.com. Face time is not only something you want with the people you work for and with, relationships with people in your industry are everything. It's new business/referrals. its about sharing ideas and goals and meeting like minded people to build lasting friendships. Part of what's great about working in an office is becoming friends with co-workers. Without an office setting, things can be really lonely if you don't cultivate those same kinds of relationships.

3. Balance is hard. I'm terrible at this. Like really really bad. I wake up and start working. Fall asleep with my laptop on my bed. I work nearly every weekend. Since not being a crazed workaholic is hard for me I've employed a few of these tactics over the years and when I'm diligent they really do work. The good part of about my particular job is that I'm often on the go. Meetings, photoshoots, video shoot and travel do keep you moving but on days when life is just about answering emails, sending pitches, writing and editing it's good for me to either go work out in the morning - getting back to this point or taking a walk in the morning even if it's just around the corner to grab coffee. It jump starts my brain and body and I usually am motivated to work outside of the house after that.

Bodysuits are amazing but there's a catch

I didn't deem bodysuits as something I needed until I saw this long sleeve red leo version. They just felt sort of impractical (they are!)... Like do I space in my soul for a pre bathroom struggle situation? I don't. Also, for those of us with long torsos and big bellies lets just call being able snapping this thing without help an act of God.

But through all the struggle and possible bathroom snafus, once it's on - you're going to be really really happy. Now that I'm a pro (JK), I'm on the hunt for more and these caught my eye! Click through the images for details or to shop. xo
