I had one of "those" moments the other day...

I'm sitting in a highly secure building, with a remote terminal accessing multiple Virtual Machines across a secure network... doing the setup work for an enterprise level piece of software to run in multiple network segments, including a DMZ for public access... I'm discussing firewall rules and the un-acceptable performance of the Virtual machines, and how this will negatively impact the performacne of our app... and I thought to myself... how the fuck did I get here...?

how did I convince these people that I know what I'm doing... and convince them enough to let me do this.... this is fucking crazy... I'm working with millions of dollars worth of equipment, and people... and I am vastly under-qualified to be doing this... I was able to blindly figure out what made the product work on all new hardware, new OS, and a updated DB management....

I sit in that little room, typing and spouting off things that I believe will fix stuff... and I'm still genuinly surprised when it works.

me: blah-blah-can't ping-blah-blah-can't telnet-blah-blah- must be the firewall rules that haven't been setup yet-blah-blah...
other guy: let me check with our firewall guys.... yep you're right, those rules haven't been requested yet
me: blah-blah-445, 1433, blah-blah web servers-blah-blah-80, 443-blah-blah-rules between here and here-blah-blah....
other guy: can't do anything without paper work
me: pick up phone... blah-blah-servers-blah-blah-co-ordinate-blah-blah.... Ok, they should be to you by Tuesday. We'll be back then.
other guy: ok. see you once everything goes through.

walking out of the building... I can't believe I'm getting ot do this stuff... it feels like I have no idea what the fuck I'm doing... but... they're paying me a lot of money to do it... so I may as well sound like I know what I'm doing...

We're jumping from physical boxes, to Virtual Machines.... Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2... SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008... IIS 6 to IIS 7.5... all new network segments, IP's and firewalls... all in one go. scared... me... noooo.... what could possibly go wrong...
