Free Songs Are Like Music to The Ears

Man I’m bored with mainstream music right now. It’s like hearing the same thing over and over and over and over again. Why are there four overs? That’s because I am really that bored. So I decided it’s time to go out into the wild jungle a.k.a the Internet to uncover some hidden gems and boy did I found one.

Introducing freemusicarchive (FMA). This is the place where the indie musicians introduce their music to the world. The music comes from a whole lot of genre and some from genres I haven’t even heard of. Like all types of music, some of them are of my tastes and some of them aren’t and some of them I think are weird but all in all it’s quite refreshing from the music that is churning out from the national air waves.

For the musicians reading this, freemusicarchive is a good place to introduce your music. Thousands of visitors flock this website everyday. Its a good way to increase your fan base before going in to venture into the wild mainstream music industry. If I am not mistaken there is no fee for uploading your content but the music there is curated so you would have to first contact the authorities of the website before you are allowed to submit your music there.

For the music lovers, downloading the music there is absolutely free. If you don’t want to download it you can listen to the songs directly from the website. Who knows maybe you’ll find some bands that suits your listening needs. If you’re scouting for talented bands or solo musicians this place won’t fail you.

Inspiration for creating this website came from the Creative Commons and open source software movements. As we know contents that are attributed to these two movements are free. For musicians out there, here’s the good news, you still can make a few bucks here. The FMA knows that you work hard to create your music and they are seeking to compensate you guys directly. You can make your own band or solo profiles on the FMA website and in your profiles there will be links for your fans to buy your full album. Your fans can also opt to donate directly to you through PayPal.

If you or your band are going on a tour, you can also promote the tour to your fans and encourage them to step away from their glaring computer screens and come to the venue and enjoy your music LIVE! What better way to get to know your fans better then playing to them live on stage.

iPad: Meh!

On the 2nd of April 2010 Apple released the iPad. The sales of the iPad on the released date soared through the roof surpassing the sales of iPhone on its opening day.

The price for an iPad with 16GB of hard disk space and wifi cost around RM 1,604.88 ($499) and the top of line iPad with 64GB of hard disk space, wifi and 3G connectivity will cost a whopping RM 2,666.23 ($829). This is just a direct conversion from what the iPad costs in the United States.

Before you spend that hard earn cash of yours, do consider whether is it really worth it to purchase the iPad? Buying a netbook would be a lot cheaper and the netbook mostly do what the iPad does. So what makes buying the iPad worth it? We have to look for the pros and cons of the iPad. I prefer to give out the bad news first so…

Lets take a look at the cons of the iPad:

The iPad does not have a built in camera, so no video chatting on the iPad. With that kind of price tag, the iPad should have a built in camera, preferably a good one too. I like video chatting, its way more fun and interesting when you get to see the person you’re talking with.

Mr Jobs said surfing the web with an iPad “will be the best experience you’ll ever have” and here’s what Mr Fauzul Bahari says “crap, why aren’t videos from YouTube playing”. The iPad does not support Flash. No Flash = no YouTube = crappy net experience. Man do I love YouTube.

I sometimes enjoy programming but most of the time it drives me crazy. I’m an IT student so whether I like it or not I have to program. The iPad doesn’t let me do that, you can’t do programming right on the iPad. With that said not many end users of the iPad know how to program but to us programmers this is a turn off. Although there is a workaround to this problem which is by programming in a browser base IDE, it is still not the same. Boohoo.

64GB of storage space. That’s the maximum internal storage space that the iPad has. I could get 160GB of storage space with a netbook that costs RM999.oo ($311.14). Dear Mr Jobs, why oh why can’t an iPad worth $829 come with a hard disk space more than 64GB. I figured that by paying that much for an iPad, the customer should at least be entitled with an iPad with 320GB of storage.

To virtual farmers everywhere, no Flash = no Farm Ville = dying crops = arghhh!!! Why? Read the second bullet point.

I gotta say that the iPad’s battery life is amazing, it can last for more than 10 hours on a continuous use. So what is the contra here you might ask. Well the iPad battery cannot be swapped like the netbooks or upgraded because the battery is fixed inside the iPad.

If you’re a blogger than typing content for your blog would be a drag on the iPad. Typing on a touch screen is slow and the screen is also laying flat on your table or your laps making it quite uncomfortable to look at what you are typing with your fingers also on the screen. Having an angled screen helps a lot in this situation.

You cannot upgrade the iPad that you have purchased. You’re stuck with what you have purchased. With the netbook you still have the option of upgrading the RAM and the hard drive.

Now, lets take a look at the pros of the iPad:

NONE!

Buying an iPad just doesn’t seem to be worth it in my opinion. Netbooks are a lot better and can do a lot more then the iPad with a cheaper price tag.

So I’ll repeat it again just for the fun of it…

Rescue Your PC with AVG

So you’re past the panicking stage even though I told you not to panic. Well have you got your head together again? I’ll assume that you do. Head over to AVG and download the AVG Rescue CD. There AVG Rescue CD comes with two version, the CD version and the other one the USB version. Hmm, in my opinion AVG should have also named the other version as “AVG Rescue USB”.

But enough with names. AVG Rescue CD can be used to recover your computer even when the operating system could not boot properly after a highly malicious attack. The rescue tool can be used as a bootable CD or bootable USB and after cleaning your PC with the help of it’s comprehensive administration toolkit.

Furthermore, apart from removing malicious items from your PC, the rescue tool also provides several other features such as:

Midnight Commander: A file manager.
Windows Registry Editor: To edit the computer registry. Use this feature if you only know what you’re doing OK.
Test Disk: A tool that helps to recover your hard-drive.
Ping: To test if your computer can connect to network resources.
Common Linux Programs and Services.

There, as I said before there is no particular need for worrying. Just pop-in the AVG Rescue CD and let it do its wonders.

The AVG Rescue CD is suitable for computers running Microsoft Windows and also Linux and is available for free.

A Tribute to Dr Henry Edward Roberts

This man made what our lives what it is today. Dr Henry Edward Roberts “the father of the personal computer”. Take a moment and ponder what our lives would be without the personal computer.

In 1975, Dr Henry Edward Roberts designed the first commercially successful personal computer the Altair 8800 running the Intel 8080 microprocessor. Altair 8800 sparked the era where personal computers were accepted as a household item and look at the growth of the personal computer now after 30 years since it took off. Try to compare the Altair 8800 and today’s personal computer, how the technology has evolved by leaps and bounds. Amazing isn’t it.

His invention, the Altair 8800 was published in the January issue of Popular Electronics and caught the eyes of the Microsoft’s founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen. They called Dr Henry and joined him at at his company, Micro Instrument and Telemetry Systems (MITS). The Microsoft’s founders created the first Microsoft product, a software named Altair-BASIC.

With the personal computer ever getting more popular, it became a common household item. A home won’t be complete without having one computer. Nowadays a home has more than one computer, one for each family member. How the invention of the personal computer has change how we live.

Thank You Dr Henry Edward Roberts. You are gone but your contribution will live on for centuries to come.

AMD vs Intel: The Chip Wars Returns

So here we go again, the battle between Advance Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel resumed after AMD announced of their new launch of a 12 core server processor. The announcement came two weeks after Intel launched their hexacore (or would it be better to call it sexacore?) processor.

AMD claims that their new processor will beat Intel’s processor in terms of performance, energy efficiency and cost per computing power. They claim that the new chip shows an increase of performance level up to 119% when compared to their older server chips using the same amount of energy.

Officially the chip will be named AMD Opteron 6000 series aiming for the high-end market and AMD Opteron 4000 series aimed for the low-end market. AMD Maranello platform will be used to house the server chip.

AMD will also be introducing their Direct Connect Architecture 2.0 (DCA) which would allow a microprocessor to communicate with four other microprocessors simultaneously. The DCA 2.0 would support up to 16 cores altogether.

With the introduction of the the new chip based on the code-named “Magny-Cours” design, consumers will have a chance of replacing aging servers with a single Magny-Cours server which provides better performance level, lower energy consumption and lower maintenance costs.

Next year the battle will continue and AMD is going to introduce their code-named “Interlagos” chips that will have 12 and 16 cores, and a low-end chip named “Valencia” with 6 to 8 cores.

My take on this is that it is good news. I have always liked AMD instead of Intel and AMD are showing signs again that they are on a competitive level with Intel after their slack in recent years. AMD chips are more energy efficient and their prices are much more lower than Intel’s prices but the performance power of AMD chips are always lagging behind Intel’s chips when compared to similar core processors.

Another reason for this being good news is that when new processors with more higher are released into the market, lower core processors prices drops even more. As a consumer quad cores of processing power is more than enough to get through the day. 8 cores is useful if you are doing lots of video encoding or developing high-end 3D graphics but other than that it would be just silly to own an 8 core processor right now.

Not many softwares or games even utilizes the power of all the cores of the quad cores processor. Imagine the 8, 12, 16 cores. What would the those cores do? By the time softwares are developed to utilize those cores maybe we will be having a processor that has 24 to 28 cores. What normal human-being would use a processor with that much processing power?

In conclusion I support the chip wars because as a consumer we are the one winning and the chips are getting even more earth friendly.
