A Long Day

Jesus and His Validity Through Genealogy

Freedom of Conscience

As we wrap up our study of the Reformation, we conclude with Roger Williams’ move toward Freedom of Conscience-the freedom to worship in one’s own way, including the right not to worship. Prior to 1636, nearly every government on earth assumed responsibility for spiritual as well as political concerns, often invoking laws demanding that citizens worship at a certain church and in certain ways. However, Roger Williams proposed the idea of Freedom of Conscience when he came to the New World. This eventually was the basis for the first amendment to the US Constitution-freedom of religion without government control. Luke 9: 52-56; Romans 5:1 (NKJV)

People were even imprisoned for baptizing adults after salvation. The Breakdown of the Vernacular

A history of the translations of the Bible is given, beginning in the fourth century with Jerome and continuing through the Reformation to the seventeenth century. As it was translated from the Hebrew to Latin, words were changed thereby changing the meaning as well because the Latin version was influenced by the Catholic Church. Justification By Faith

Authority Over the Sabbath

The Sabbath is the heart of Judaism. It is the only day of creation given a name. There are thousands of Oral Laws governing this day, many more than what are in Scripture. Jesus showed His authority over the Sabbath by healing the man at Bethesda The Pharisees were livid because, although Jesus broke no Scriptural laws, He did break their oral laws. In a similar fashion, Martin Luther led the Great Reformation after studying the Bible and realizing that many of the “laws” of the Catholic Church were not found in Scripture and were in fact just traditions. Jesus Has Authority Over Sinners

At this time, there was a lot of tension among the religious rulers of the day. They had seen Jesus cast out demons and heal a leper. Then, they see Him tell a lame man his sins have been forgiven and then tell him to get up and walk. Now He calls a tax collector to be one of his disciples and then goes to eat with a house full of tax collectors and other “undesirables”. The tension comes about because Jesus’ actions are forcing them to make a decision about Him that contradicts all their traditions and (oral) laws. You Must Be Born Again

John 2 starts out with the beginning of Jesus’ ministry at a wedding feast. It is here that Jesus performs the first miracle of His ministry-changing water into wine. The host ran out of wine. It normally takes three days of fermentation for grape juice to become wine. However, Jesus was able to instantaneously change water into wine in order to manifest God’s glory and for the disciples to believe in Him (vs.11). And the wine He created was the best wine (vs. 10). Slave vs Servant & Ownership

In Philippians, Paul refers to himself as a bond-servant (slave). The difference between being a slave of Christ and a servant of Christ is control. Sharing the Good News

Sometimes distractions get in the way of sharing the good news. In today’s world, cell phones present a huge distraction to many people. They are constantly looking at them, interacting with them, not even noticing the world around them. Satan tried to distract Nehemiah from rebuilding the temple, and he tries to use modern technology to distract us from listening to and following God’s Word. As Christians, we need to be focused on sharing the Good News that Jesus died, was buried and rose on the third day and is alive today! With so many people attached to their cell phones today, we need to help them connect to God through His Word and we can do that with the Bible.is app. (Nehemiah 6:1-3; 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 NKJV)

Passion Week

The week before Jesus was crucified is discussed in all four Gospels. Many signs and wonders occurred that week, with the catalyst being the resurrection of Lazarus after he had been dead for more than three days. This event initiated the death notice for Jesus by the Pharisees and Sadducees. Brother Mike takes us through this week and to the crucifixion of our Lord. Romans 10:9-11 gives us the purpose of the crucifixion and the resurrection. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

Engaging the Scriptures-Habit Formation

As we look at a plan for engaging the Scriptures, we look at how to form a habit of doing so. Habit formation is an integral part of our building a relationship with God through His Word. We must develop a plan of action, for a goal without a plan is just a dream. We will look at three parts of forming a habit-a cue, a routine, and a reward.
