Baggage Pt2: Relationships

In casual relationships, the focus is all about finding the right person, requiring nothing on our part. In covenant relationships, the focus is all about becoming the right person, requiring much work, effort, patience, grace, and commitment. People who don't plant themselves in the messy soil of long-term covenant relationships don't grow in grace because they never have to exercise grace. They simply cut and run at the first offense. This fosters shallow relationships, fragile communities, broken families, and unredeemed motion in the Church. We can't rightly deal with our baggage without real commitments that demand us to grow in grace.

Baggage Pt1: Deal With It

Our baggage is telling a story. It speaks of where we’ve been, things that have happened to us, and how it has affected us. The first thing we need to learn about baggage is that it doesn’t go away by avoidance. My baggage isn’t going to check itself. I must deal with it.

Fewer People = Greater Kingdom Impact

Moses was trying to pour himself into way too many people’s lives. He was overextended, depleted, exhausted, and heading for spiritual burnout. A mentor (his father-in-law) told him that this wasn’t good (even though Moses thought that what he was doing was good, responsible, and godly). Many people are stretched way too thin today even under the guise of "ministry" or “doing God’s work.” Greater impact comes when we spend more time with fewer people. Moses, Elijah, David, Jesus, and Paul all practiced this principle.

Gymnazo Pt.4: Seeing What Jesus Sees

With so many differing perspectives and opposing worldviews, it's important that we train our eyes to see what Jesus sees. It can be tempting to want Jesus to see people the way we see them, but the discipline of conforming ourselves to see people through Jesus' eyes will not only spare us from a critical, judgmental, and overly cynical inclination; it will enable us to put a premium on people, find grace in our relationships, and add value to the lives of others.

Gymnazo Pt.3: Winning Is Everything

People do not drift toward growth and discipline. We tend to drift toward complacency. For Paul, his attitude about winning dictated his approach toward how he trained. Because Paul rightly defined the WIN in his life, he lived with passion and discipline despite incessant hardships, personal struggles, spiritual suffering, emotional fatigue, and temptations to quit. Winning is everything! The discrepancy lies in how we define the win.

Gymnazo Pt.2: Grace is a Catalyst for Works

Grace is not opposed to effort; it is opposed to earning. Scripture distinguishes between dead works and good works. One is motivated by earning self-approval, spiritual status, or moral justification. The other is motivated by love, humility, and passion for Christ. Paul affirmed that his position in Christ was a result of grace alone, not of works. But because Paul was fueled out of love for God and love for people, grace was a catalyst for effort and diligence, not a theological framework to neglect works (1 Corinthians 15:10; Ephesians 2:8-10).

Gymnazo Pt.1: Stop Trying. Start Training.

There are too many things we are trying to do when we should be training to do. Trying is episodic. It breeds a pass/fail mentality. Training is about consistency. It breeds a progress mentality. What we do consistently, not episodically, comes to define us, and determines our future. Paul instructed young Timothy to train himself to live a life that honors God (1 Timothy 4). This kind of training has promise for this present life as well as the one to come.

What would our lives look like if we all applied God's principles on giving? On an average, it's about 20% of the people in most churches who do all the serving and giving. What could happen if 100% of FCCers all participated in giving and serving? What could our church look like? What kind of impact could that have on our community? All of our bold plans and audacious ideas will be meaningless if we don't learn to be a people of bold generosity.

In the film We Bought A Zoo, we see that sometimes in life, all you need for something great to happen is about 20 seconds of insane courage. The moments in life that come to shape our destiny and define our journey are always birthed in the tension between boldness and timidity. The Bible is full of moments just like this; stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things because they were overcome with about 20 seconds of insane courage. This is the story of Jonathan and his armor bearer facing insuperable odds in 1 Samuel 14.

Life is no place for the timid. Your timidity doesn’t serve you or others well. In part one of the Audacity series, we learn that boldness isn’t about volume; it’s a posture of the heart that expresses itself through outward confidence, personal sacrifice, and uncommon acts of courage. Simply put, it’s behavior born out of belief. Therefore, our boldness, or lack of, speaks much about what we believe about our God. Bold expectations are born out of your belief in WHO God is; not WHO you could be, WHERE you are in life, or WHAT circumstances surround you.

Presence Pt.2: Jesus + Nothing = Everything

Scripture commands us to “Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually!” (Psalm 105:4 ESV) Yet like Adam and Eve, we sometimes hide from God’s presence in shame, or depart from God’s presence like Cain. After a major moral failure in his life, David prayed, “Cast me not away from your presence.” Jonah, in sheer rebellion, hired a travel agent to help him book a one-way ticket to flee the presence of God. But a woman in the New Testament said to herself, “If I only could touch his garment,” then everything would change. And it did. Everything we need is in God’s presence. Jesus + Nothing = Everything. (Psalm 16:11 ESV) “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

(Psalm 16:11 ESV) “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”</itunes:summary>

Presence Pt.1: Desperation

Religious activity without God’s presence breeds nothing more than spiritual posers. What gives believers their distinction in a world of unbelief is God’s presence in and on their lives. Moses was so desperate for God’s presence that he would rather die in the wilderness than lead God’s people into the Promised Land without God’s presence. How desperate are you for God’s presence in your life?

Forgotten Virtues Pt.2: LOYALTY

Loyalty is a forgotten virtue in our world today. If loyalty should be found anywhere, it certainly should be found in the Body of Christ. The Church is Christ’s expression in the world today but we can’t look like Jesus if we aren’t loyal like Jesus. The true weight of loyalty can be measured in how a person treats their enemies or traitors. How was David loyal to Saul? How was Jesus loyal to Judas? How a man treats those hostile toward him can often reveal how faithful he will be to those closest to him.

VISION: Is It In You?

The bigger the vision the harder you will have to fight for it. The larger the cause with Christ at the center of it, the more tenacious and resilient you must be to scrap it out for that cause. Vision is useless without faith, and without faith we cannot please God. God told Noah to build something that didn’t exist to save a people from a crisis that had never happened. Vision is seeing what God sees, going where God leads, and serving where God’s heart bleeds. Matthew 25 tells us that we will one day be judged by what we did for the least of these.

Masquerade pt2: No More Condemnation

In our Masquerade series, we’ve been learning that CONVICTION is intended to change our future, whereas, CONDEMNATION is intended to punish our past. If we are to live victorious in the spirit and life that Jesus offers us, we must learn how to courageously deal with condemnation. Failure is an event, not a person. When others try to brand us over a single failure, or label us by a past sin, we must know who we are in Christ and what kind of future he has scripted over our lives. We must let Christ brand us, not people who point their fingers in accusatory fashion. This takes courage, strength, and a self-dignity that isn’t built on the foundation of our own righteousness, but a solid foundation of who we are because of Jesus’ righteousness. Our personal victories are dependent on our hearing God’s voice and knowing what He thinks about us, not what others speak of us.

Masquerade pt1: The Guilt Factor

There are many forms of guilt in the Bible. Some are destructive, some are constructive. Condemnation is destructive. However, the conviction of the Holy Spirit is not only constructive, but necessary to grow us into spiritual maturity and Christ-likeness. Our becoming fully alive lies not in our ability to shun all guilt, but in rightly interpreting, and rightly responding to the guilt we feel. Adam and Eve didn't rightly deal with their guilt, therefore, they lived in fear and hid from the presence of God. We must be more courageous when it comes to our guilt.

GO! Pt 4: Your Story Matters

There is a story that only YOU can tell. Throughout scripture, Christ-followers are called to go and tell the Good News of the Gospel and 'testify' to the life-changing power of Jesus. Unfortunately, sometimes Christians feel that their stories, in contrast to others, are insignificant or that we need to trump up Hollywood-style, embellished testimonies to help God out a little. Your story is significant not because of the WHAT you have been through; but because of the WHO that is at the center of it. Paul gave a bold, sincere, accurate, and Christ-centered testimony to King Agrippa in Acts 26.

Amazing things come to life in our spirit when we begin to realize that God’s primary interest is not in making us comfortable, but in giving us a wild passion to see the Gospel carried to the ends of the earth. Has our passion for the lost become a little too domesticated? Like Rocky Balboa, have we become dangerously civilized with our faith?... Lost our edge? After initial success in evangelism, Peter and the early church began to put God in a religious box. The were tempted to play it safe. In Acts 10, God had to break through Peter's prejudices to help him learn the Gospel was for ALL people and ALL nations.

Israel was God’s chosen people but they had played the “whore” and forsook God, their Perfect Lover. They chased after worthless idols and went whoring after false gods. But God, unrelenting in his love for Israel and unyielding in his pursuit of her, raises up a prophet named Hosea and uses his life as an “object lesson” to demonstrate mercy and redemption for this “adulteress” people. Love stinks for Hosea. He must marry a prostitute who will tell him he’s not a good enough lover and ultimately be unfaithful to him. Hosea’s life is inconveniently interrupted, his personal dreams are sacrificed, his reputation becomes marred, and his ministry is anything but conventional; all because of God’s unrelenting LOVE for a lost generation. Are we willing to let God interrupt our lives to demonstrate his love for a lost and broken world?

Is your life as a believer marked more by dangerous wonder or spiritual boredom? Through life and leadership lessons in Nehemiah, we see that there are no shortcuts to church planting, rebuilding a city, and ultimately changing the world. We’ve set up a perimeter in hostile territory where every inch of trench warfare will be contested. Opposition will be intense. But tenacious prayer and hard work will secure victory if our hearts bleed with compassion and we remember who and what we are fighting for. Gladiators, “Arise!”

VISION is about where you are going, CULTURE is about what you are becoming. What we are becoming is just as important as where we are going. If we want to reach our city for Christ, the culture we create in the "house" is critical. If we can't serve God's family well, we can't serve the city well. Success starts on Sundays! And Faith in Action starts with God's family. How well are you SERVING the HOUSE?

Gladiators #1: Fight Well, Serve Well

The Roman gladiators didn't get to choose their arenas, but they did get to choose how well they would fight. David didn't choose his giants, but he served well and in doing so, got caught up in a dance with destiny. He wasn't looking for a gig to promote self, he focused on serving Israel's armies. By serving well, he was prepared to fight well.

From a story in John 5, we learn that amazing things begin to happen when we focus on WHO is before us rather than WHAT is behind us.

Playmakers #4: "Risking Your Reputation for Messy People"

Risking your reputation for messy people isn't the most comfortable thing to do. Yet, it's the way Jesus made his living. In this message, we look at how Paul risked his reputation on a troubled young person, Onesimus, in a time when it was very unpopular to advocate for runaway slaves. Who are you risking your reputation for? If you're not, you may not be fully following in Jesus' footsteps.

Playmakers #3: "It's Fun Doing the Impossible"

Walt Disney said it's kinda fun doing the impossible. I think Abraham would agree after having a child born to him at 100 years old. He named him "laughter". Jesus said we must become like little children to experience kingdom blessings. Could that be because our God is BIG when we are SMALL but as we get "bigger" He becomes "smaller"?

Playmakers #2: "Resilient People Change the World"

God is more concerned with preparing you for your life’s dance with destiny than insulating you from pain and discomfort. Life cannot be reduced to merely ‘not getting beat up.’ There’s more at stake. Resilient people change the world, and we must therefore take our shots and keep on coming despite being under rapid fire.

Playmakers #1: "The Guarantee"

Adversity is indigenous to every follower of Christ. The sooner we come to grips with the fact that adversity is here to stay, the better equipped we are to face our God-given destiny. We can go "big" despite adversity, but we can go "bigger" because of it. It's not an inconvenience, it's a catalyst!
