OH, SLAM! HICKS AMONG ELITE PHILOSOPHERS IN COUNTRY
Surprise! Maggie Hicks, 5th grader at MEH, placed third - IN THE NATION - in the Philosophy Slam essay contest.
Maggie’s essay on the the theme, “What is the Meaning of Life?” drew on her personal experience of individuals who lived life to the fullest. She and her class were surprised with the news when Ms. Wilkie and Maggie's family arrived with balloons.
Above from left - family friend Catherine Hall, Maggie, her brother Hunter and mom and dad, Todd and Gwyn Hicks.

A: Even WE admit sports coverage has been a little thin this spring. This is the busiest time of the year for everyone at FCCPS - so now, more than ever we rely on crowdsourcing!
If you attend a game, help us! Send us photos, results, any information is welcome and will be used not only in Morning Announcements but all of our social outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Google+).

BABY BUNNIES BUMP RECESS INDOORS
Did your Mount Daniel student come home with the tale that outdoor recess was cancelled - because of baby bunnies?
While it sounds like the plot for a great children's book it played out in real life yesterday on the Mount Daniel playground.
At right is one of six baby bunnies found nestled in the mulch under playground equipment. To keep the babies safe from little feet, kids enjoyed indoor recess while Animal Control officers took care of the bunny family.

THE DIFFERENCE IS AS CLEAR AS NIGHT AND DAY
While you were sleeping, the Thomas Jefferson Elementary gymnasium has been underoing a full replacement and upgrade of its lights. Contractors volunteered to work between 5:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. each night this week replacing the fixtures and lights so as not to disturb class time. And the brighter difference the upgrade will make is clear - above left is the gym before the upgrade, and at right is after a few new fixtures have been installed.

CORRECTIONS - Please forgive us. . .
During yesterday's original Morning Announcements there were TWO GLARING ERRORS with regard to Mary Ellen Henderson's SOL Coverage.
#1 - The SOL Schedule was a version which has since been updated. THIS IS THE CORRECT SCHEDULE

  MARY ELLEN HENDERSON SOL SCHEDULE

#2 - Principal Seidah Ashshaheed has NEVER kissed a "snorting pig" to motivate young students. She has only kissed a camel, a zebra, and a baby goat (below left) to motivate young students. Oh...and then there was that one time she let a biker jump over her head.
But no, she's never kissed a pig...yet. We regret the error.

POW WOW, WOW!! AT TJ NATIVE AMERICAN DAY
Students at Thomas Jefferson learned about Native American history and culture through a traditional "Grass Dance" performed by their fellow student 2nd grader George Gillette (right) and his father, Rusty of the Arikara/Hidatsa tribe from North Dakota. Both compete frequently in traditional dance competitions at pow wows across the US.
The performance was just one of many activities for the annual day. Students also learned about the life cycle of maize (corn) from planting to cornbread, and took part in traditional games and craft making.

MEH NAMED "OFFICIAL HOCKEY SCHOOL" BY WASHINGTON CAPITALS
The Washington Capitals visited the Huskies of Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School on Tuesday, as part of the Washington Capitals Hockey School program. The program introduced students to past Capitals players and their trusty mascot Slapshot.
The assembly began with an informal Q&A session where kids asked questions about their NHL experience and the most popular topic of conversation: penalty minutes.
As part of the program, MEH was named an Official Capitals Hockey School and all of the equipment used during the assembly was donated to the school in order to continue teaching the game of hockey to kids.

Q: When you say Mount Daniel and TJ “currently is not accepting tuition-paying students” (see below) do you mean there are no tuition paying students, or no more are being accepted? - DL
A: Both. MD and TJ both are at capacity. Should that change, the tuition recently approved by the School Board would be implemented. Any change is highly unlikely, however; thus the need for the expansion at TJ now underway.
From yesterday's Morning Announcements The tuition rates for FY13 are as follows: + MD $14,940 *Currently not accepting tuition students + TJ $14,400 *Currently mot accepting tuition students + MEH $15,840 *Depending on the grade level - 1 student currently + GM $17,100 *Depending on the grade level - 15 students currently
