I'm waiting to see how the new environment changes (or doesn't) the characters. I think it'll work just as well, the music was never important, it was the creative process and the interplay between the quirks in each of them. The new art is excellent, if different, and I think it serves the purpose of dividing up the story into 'episodes'.
I loved the studio-musician aspect, but I really do think that it'll work whatever context the characters are placed into.

I can't believe I missed the news that F Chords is back! I missed reading it on the Chainsawsuit post. Argh! How did i miss it? I only found out about it stumbling through Webcomic Overlook archives today... having only found *that* site today, too.

It's interesting to see the alternate takes on the reboot.

I've been lax on reading Starslip lately, I vow to go back to it now that I've made more space on my daily comic reading by sh8canning three of my former favorites that have died or gone stale.

Now, will you ever repost the TIME Friends anywhere?

It's possible that our Vanderbeam got swapped out before their relationship would've begun. I thought it was implied she was starting to warm up to him after Ars Ad Astra.

Something that's always bugged me a little: The fact that he took another Vanderbeam's place means he hasn't exactly earned the relationship, merely inherited its history. Wouldn't that be sort of awkward if they eventually meet? "Hi, I'm not _exactly_ the guy you liked, but I've done all the reading!"

Even so, I want him to succeed, but I wonder if that's ever occurred to him.

It seems to me like most of Straub's female characters occupy a place of uncertain intentions that the male protagonists spend large amounts of time trying to figure out. As a nerd who used to spend huge amounts of time trying to translate the sum of a girl's actions toward me on a case-by-case basis (was she less than two feet from me? Did she place emphasis on the word "like?" Did part of her body brush against mine? What did she mean by "copy your notes since I was ditching class with my boyfriend?"), this is true to life and cathartic to read. As a nerd who's since become more comfortable around girls, it seems like it limits the development the female characters get.

Straub's been trying to change that on Starslip recently, giving us long Holiday- and Jovia-centric stories, but the characters still seem to resolve into enigmas, only now they're enigma's to themselves. Is Holiday a no-nonsense space engineer or just a girl, looking at a pretentious art twit, asking him to love her? Jovia's character is resolving a little more as her storyline goes on, but there's still the question of why she loves Vanderbeam in this universe and merely tolerates him in others.
