Ghosties and Ghoulies and Long-Legged Beasties and Things that go bump in the night!
My fears as a frightened child were typical of any scared child. I needed that extra large nightlight in my too-dark room. Terrified of getting lost, I hung on tightly to my parent’s hand, never once entertaining the idea of venturing away by myself. Overcoming my fear of strangers, or anything new, was a real challenge. Though unreasonable, my childish fears were not atypical.

As an adult, I still need help in overcoming fear. I often unreasonably cling to what’s comfortable. Not for me, that latest complicated, state-of-the-art, high-tech phone that does everything but serve me wine. (Besides, I just learned how to take pictures on the phone I have!) Somewhat anxious in a crowd, I feel vulnerable, unprotected, potentially exposed. As I age, I dread loss more and more – youth, loved ones, time, even “stuff.”
Fear is fear! Fear in children is the same raw emotion as fear in adults. All of us need to work at overcoming fear. A little one’s fear of the dark feels as scary as an uncertain tomorrow to a grown-up. Getting lost as a child feels the same as losing purpose to an adult. Anxiety, dread, confusion, panic – the unreasonable sensations are the same.

Over the years, however, I have found help in overcoming fear through a focus on Christ and His promises. The beautiful words and music to Carolina Sandell Berg’s hymn, Children of the Heavenly Father say it all:

Children of the heavenly Father safely in his bosom gather; nestling bird or star in heaven such a refuge ne’er was given.

God his own doth tend and nourish, in his holy courts they flourish. From all evil things he spares them, in his mighty arms he bears them.

Neither life nor death shall ever from the Lord his children sever; unto them his grace he showeth and their sorrows all he knoweth.

Though he giveth or he taketh, God his children ne’er forsaketh; his the loving purpose solely to preserve them pure and holy.

The Holy Spirit helps us in overcoming fear sometimes in unlikely ways. Music and verse enable us to focus on God’s character and good intentions for us. We become quieted, calmer, more directed and content. We are unafraid, with or without a change in our circumstances, when God works His reasonable comfort for our unreasonable fears.

John Newton wrote the beloved hymn Amazing Grace in 1779 after several years of depression and even suicidal thoughts. In 1748, John, age 23, was caught in a terrible storm at sea. In terror and overcoming fear, he cried out to God and “the Lord came from on high and delivered me out of deep waters.”

Newton’s spiritual growth was slow, but eventually he became a very powerful evangelical preacher and author of hundreds of hymns. His personal experience of rescue by the Lord led him to help others in overcoming fear. Here are the words of the third verse of Amazing Grace:

Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come.
‘Tis grace that brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home.

Fear in children is a challenge that we as parents face. We can set an example of overcoming fear by making sure our children know that we ourselves go to the Lord when we’re unsure or frightened. A scared child can learn from their parents that God is our ultimate protector and guide, and He will always answer our prayers. When we are too frightened to know what to pray, He hears what is in our hearts and lifts us up.

Music — whether hymns, praise songs or Christian soaking music – can be a wonderful tool to calm a frightened child and help them in overcoming fear. You probably already have a bedtime routine with your children that includes snuggling, reading and praying. Adding soaking music at bedtime can help override all the negative messages your children hear each day, and ensure they will experience peaceful rest.

Isaiah 41:10 encourages us, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you. Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” What comforting words to share with your children; words we all need to hear.

Nothing is more comforting than the assuring and hopeful words of God’s love and His promises to always be with us. Find renewed hope, refreshment and help in overcoming fear with ThumbPeople’s “Words of Blessing,” “Words of Healing” and “Words of Love” soaking music.

By surrounding adults and children with positive and uplifting words through their soaking music, Thumbuddy children’s books, preschool curriculum activities and nurturing children’s music, ThumbPeople empowers individuals in overcoming fear and living abundantly blessed lives.

When I was in 5th grade, the Sunday School Director at our church asked me to sing a solo in the annual children’s Christmas pageant. I don’t think I’ve ever been more frightened of something. But I was too scared to tell her ‘no’, so I agreed to do it.

I didn’t sleep for several days before the pageant. No matter how many times I practiced my solo, I didn’t feel at all confident of my ability to stand up in front of a church full of people and sing it.

I have no specific recollection of how my solo went that day, but I do clearly remember that once I started to sing, my fear subsided and I could feel God’s presence in that sanctuary. It was clear to me He was pleased with the offering of my music to His glory.

Of course, fear in children is perfectly normal. Certainly some children are naturally more confident than others, but no one is immune from fear. That’s why it’s so important for us as parents to equip our children with tools they can use in overcoming fear in their lives.

Here are a few simple ways to deal with fear in children:

Pray together. Teach your children to rely on God in scary situations. Show by your example that you go to God in prayer when you are faced with something frightening or unsettling.

Listen to soaking music. There’s plenty of research that shows the power of music in calming us, soothing us, relaxing us, even lowering our blood pressure and slowing our heartbeat. Why not use God’s gift of music to calm a frightened child?

Acknowledge your child’s fears. A scared child should never feel they can’t share their feelings with you. Let your child know it’s normal to feel afraid, especially in unfamiliar situations, but you will always be available to listen and help them in overcoming fear.

My first solo experience in 5th grade taught me a lot about overcoming fear. There’s no question that I was stronger after singing that first solo. Experiencing fear teaches children coping skills, ways to deal with anxiety and that they can indeed be successful in overcoming fear.

Jesus reminds us that God cares for the birds of the air, so how much more will He provide for His children? “So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:31).

Child development experts highly recommend ThumbPeople’s “Words of Love,” “Words of Blessing” and “Words of Healing” soaking music for its effectiveness in helping children in overcoming fear, building self worth and developing confidence.

Through surrounding children and adults with positive and hopeful words inspired by Biblical truths, ThumbPeople provides comforting soaking music, Thumbuddy children’s books, preschool curriculum activities and nurturing kid’s music.

What the frightened child needs most from us is our reassurance and love not our sarcasm. Of course in plain English this makes perfect sense and we’d all agree wholeheartedly that this is reasonable – but what about in the moment? Are we as parents always supportive in overcoming fear in our children?

It seems that parent’s reactions to fear in children varies tremendously depending upon who’s watching. We don’t want anyone to think our kid’s a wimp so when he cries at the sight of a butterfly instead of empathizing that something fluttering past can take one by surprise we may be more inclined to say, “Don’t be a baby! It’s a butterfly for goodness sake.” In those moments, where our desire to save face trumps our desire to meet the emotional needs of our scared child, we don’t do a lot to encourage our child in their journey toward overcoming fear and we surely don’t do a lot to encourage them to trust us with their deeper fears and anxieties.

Everyone gets startled now and again – particularly the young who are just becoming familiar with the surprising world around them. As Christian parents our responsibility is to appreciate their tender emotions rather than mock them to make them appear to be something they’re not yet: mature adults. Kids will be kids. Which means that sometimes they’re going to be afraid of things that pose no rational threat – and of course, some things that actually do.

Children’s feelings need to be addressed with tenderness and care irrespective of the feared object or event. Overcoming fear is vital for the young and old to live in the freedom Jesus came to offer us all. We are in the process of building bridges of trust with the children entrusted to us and need to ensure that they know that we care about what ails them – no matter how trivial or small.

Much as kids don’t like to be scared, we might find it a bit surprising to find that they sometimes intentionally try to scare themselves (or one another) just for the thrill of it. I’ll never forget the time my eleven year old neighbor came running over to my house one morning, clearly frightened out of her wits. She and her friends had been left unsupervised (please don’t get me started) after a slumber party in her home.

On a lark, they had decided to engage in all manner of silliness and quite frankly, witchcraft by performing séances, and chanting ridiculous things in an effort to call upon spirits not of the Lord. Coincidentally (for those who believe in such things) the smoke alarm started blaring uncontrollably in the house just as they finished with one of their rituals. They had no idea how to make it stop and the screeching siren along with the reality of what they were up to had them all scared beyond measure. I do believe it was no coincidence at all and that they were indeed entertaining visitors they truly did not welcome after all. I was at once concerned that they would face an ongoing struggle in overcoming fear after their none too harmless escapade.

After my husband went over to tend to the alarm, I sat the girls down in my living room (now exhibiting quite a lot of fear in children) and had a little chat with them. I told them that what they were doing was not harmless and indeed was dangerous more than they realized. I prayed blessings and cleansing over them and encouraged them never to do it again. I don’t know what ever came of it. I’m not their mamma – kind of wish I were in that moment as I’m not sure their mothers would have thought it was of any real harm. But I sure didn’t like what was being introduced to those young girls and I sure didn’t like to see a frightened child for any reason. For in that moment, looking into the face of my young neighbor she was no longer a girl about to turn 12 but instead a scared child – in need of protection and guidance in overcoming fear.

We may not have much say over what goes on in the homes of our neighbors, but we’d surely best have some in our own homes in the battle we all face toward overcoming fear. Let’s ensure that our children understand that introducing anything not of the Lord Jesus into their games and play is anything but harmless. Creating an avenue for fear to flood through their hearts and minds is the last thing any of us should want to see.

Overcoming fear is vital to ours and our children’s walk with the Lord. Well beyond a healthy fear of the Lord, being enslaved to fear is both paralyzing and destructive. We want to ensure that we’re doing all that we can to enable our kids to be victorious in their efforts toward overcoming fear.

Experts tell us that fear in children is a normal part of development. At least so long as it is age-appropriate and not amplified to the point of phobia. In other words, it’s normal for a two year old to have a fear of the toilet, but if an eight year old has this same fear – there may be cause for concern.

Yet there are some kids who are more likely to behave as a scared child or anxious about life in general than others and have to work hard in overcoming fear. We don’t know exactly why this is but experts do tell us that this may have as much to do with temperament as it does to do with his upbringing. As parents, we do have a tremendous responsibility not to model fear and anxiety in front of our children. As Christians, we have no business living in bondage to fear and need to ensure our freedom through Christ from it so we don’t unwittingly pass it on to our children. We must be sure that we are doing all that we can to ensure that we ourselves are overcoming fear so that we can be sure they do as well.

Childhood experts agree that children whose parents are overly anxious or overreact to things often have little nippers who do the very same things. If we are struggling in our efforts toward overcoming fear we shouldn’t be too surprised when our children are facing the same mountain. We’ve all heard the parent dramatically gasp in horror as little Sally makes a perfectly benign tumble from a pillow on which she was perched. Sally, fine up to that point starts to cry as she notes that mom is terribly concerned so she infers that there must be something to cry about. From the very beginning, our children are watching us for cues on how to handle life’s curve balls. If we take the inevitable surprises each day brings with a measure of grace and even humor, our kids are much less likely to become anxious when their days go a different direction than they had hoped and instead of a carefree child we’ll find ourselves with a frightened child. We need to take our role seriously as examples of peaceful, steady people working toward overcoming fear from faith to faith.

Life is full of surprises and with the Lord Jesus running the show, we can be assured that it will all be used together for our good. So there’s no need to model anything contrary to our children who are simply learning how to manage this obstacle course we call life.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand.” Isaiah 41:10. God does not want us to live in fear and anxiety.

Throughout the Bible we are reminded that God is with us and we have no need to be frightened. Jesus came to free us from fear. We have all been afraid at some time or another. It is nothing to be ashamed of. But when we invite Jesus into our lives, we are no longer alone and no longer need to be afraid.

The scared child needs plenty of compassion and support from their parents. If they are afraid of the dark, don’t downplay the fear as you close the door behind you leaving them in a dark, scary room. The only chance they have in overcoming fear is by working through this process slowly with a loving, caring parent guiding them though their fear.

However, be careful not to coddle a frightened child. You do need to find appropriate challenges that will help them take small, but manageable steps, towards overcoming fear and gaining confidence. Draw your scared child in gradually allowing them to take their own time overcoming fear. The process may at times seem painfully slow to you, but allowing them to overcome fear in their own way and on their own timetable will ensure positive growth that will be permanent rather than temporary.

The soaking music from ThumbPeople Inc. was designed to help the frightened child in overcoming fear. Fear in children, whether a fear of the dark, animals or being alone, is very real and should not be taken lightly. “Words of Love,” “Words of Healing” and “Words of Blessing” combines soothing music with passages from the Bible which surrounds us with positive, hopeful words that will encourage and support us.

How freeing it is to recognize that when we are faced with danger and uncertainty, we do not have to panic and that we can depend on God to control the outcome. God said, “Do not be afraid.” God’s message is loud and clear. Don’t continue to live in fear for another moment! Turn your eyes towards Jesus and live in the confidence and hope that Christ promises.

ThumbPeople’s soaking music can help relieve limiting fear in children and adults through the comforting and assuring words of scripture placed over soothing music.

Words are powerful! Recognizing this, ThumbPeople provides resources to surround ourselves with positive and encouraging words through their soaking music, nurturing kid’s music, Thumbuddy books and preschool activities that help in overcoming fear in adults and fear in children.

“Fear Not” is one of my favorite quotes from the Bible. It is one of the toughest commands to live by as well.

When life becomes tough, when we are confronted with sickness or tragedies, we tend to panic. Jesus Christ reminds us that we can overcome our fear through faith. That we can call upon Jesus at any time for any reason and know firsthand the protective power of God. Fear in children is not something to be taken casually or made fun of. Their fear is real and it is strong. We all have fears and things that make us anxious and uneasy.

Three of my four children were terrified of dogs. I have no idea how or why this happened (my fourth, by the way, loves dogs and dreams of being a veterinarian.) After offending all dog owners and lovers we know, because everyone’s dog is the “best and sweetest dog,” we knew we needed to do something to help our kids.

Will’s fear had gotten so intense that he wouldn’t go trick-or-treating because so many dogs came to the door to greet the children. So, we took an odd approach and got a cat. Over the past year we have watched our three scared children go from being scared of Zoe, to tolerating her to actually loving her. And as cats seem to be able to do, she found our most frightened child, Hailey, and decided her bed was the one she was going to sleep on. Now Hailey loves Zoe and can even be seen snuggling with her at night.

There are many ways you can help your scared child with overcoming fear. Make your home a place where your child feels comfortable talking about her fears and worries, without giving up her privacy or letting her feel her space has been invaded. Home should be place where your child feels protected, respected and self-assured. Your role is to guide and support your scared child in such a way that they know they are safe and loved.

My oldest kids were three when we moved into our current home. My husband and I were thrilled about our new house which had enough bedrooms for each of our four children to have their own rooms.

My three-year-old twins didn’t think being alone in their rooms, on a different floor from mommy and daddy was all that great. Adjusting to a new home, and being in their own room proved difficult for each of them, and my husband and I developed many tricks to help them in overcoming fear and helping them sleep at night.

My personal favorite was my “monster spray.” It still amazes me that they went for this. I would pull an imaginary spray can out of my pocket and “spray” their entire room for monsters. Amazingly, it did the trick and my son would sleep peacefully no longer feeling like a scared child. My daughter, Abby, appreciated the monster spray, but needed more. She was a very frightened child.

Fear in children is not something to be taken casually or made fun of. Their fear is real and it is strong. Kids are afraid of many things. Their fears are often very specific, and typically make no sense to adults. They may be afraid of the dark, of bugs or dogs, of strangers, of change or of certain colors and foods. Sometimes a frightened child has fear and anxiety so intense that she develops a real phobia. Regardless of what they are scared of, fear in children should be taken seriously and dealt with if there is any hope of overcoming fear.

Fortunately, God is there to comfort us and help in overcoming fear. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”

With God by our side, we can concentrate on overcoming fear and becoming the courageous person He intended us to be. ThumbPeople’s soaking CD’s were created to help the scared child and anxious adult relax and find peace. The encouraging words promote confidence and build self-esteem.

Sometimes there are dark and lonely times in our life. We aren’t sure what is ahead of us and we find ourselves afraid. When we are afraid, we have a light to make us feel safe and that light is Jesus. The Bible reminds us that “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?” In the dark and stormy days of our life, we have Jesus to guide us and keep us safe.

The positive and hopeful words of Scripture placed with peaceful and soothing music within ThumbPeople’s soaking music helps kids and adults in overcoming fear.

Recognizing the powerful effect that words have on individuals, ThumbPeople offers families their “Words of Love,” “Words of Blessing” and “Words of Healing” soaking music, nurturing kid’s music, Thumbuddy children’s books and preschool curriculum and activities to soothe and calm the scared child, frightened child and counteract fear in children.
