Forget the Sacrifice: Bumping Up the 2010 Pay Raise

Earlier this year, President Obama asked that federal employees do their part during an economic downturn with a average 2010 pay raise of 2%. That isn't a bad raise with unemployment around 10% but there may not be any sacrifice after all with the possibility of a average pay raise of 3.4% in 2010.

Thousands of Federal Workers Now Protected from Secondhand Smoke Exposure

A new GSA policy on smoking in GSA buildings is now effective. This affects about 30 percent of all federal employees, according to the American Lung Association, which is asking President Obama to issue an executive order to remove smoke from the workplaces of all federal employees whether or not their workplace is under GSA control.

How much did your colleagues make in fiscal year 2008? Who is the highest paid person in government in your field? Who got the biggest award? There are limitations and the data may not be definitive because of exclusions and the categories used. But, with these limitations, here is how you can find out in a database open to anyone who wants to know and has access to a computer and the internet.

Want to Cut Federal Spending? Here Are Proposals to Cut Federal Benefits

How could money be saved in the federal budget? One way is to compute federal retirement annuities based on the highest five years of service instead of the highest three years. Another savings would be eliminating retirement payments for federal workers who retire before 62.
