Once you have your domain name, in order to be visible to the many millions of individuals who use the internet, you need a web host. When you type in a domain name like www.ebookpackagedeals.com, you will immediately be sent to my website. The ability for you to be able to see my website on your computer is due to the fact that I have web space for that website. In order to get webspace, I had to get a web host account. Without one, if you were to type in my domain name into your browser’ address bar, nothing will appear on your computer. Again when you go to my website at www.ebookpackagedeals.com and buy an ebook package, you will be able to download the package because these ebook packages are also on the same web host account.

So, what is a web host? A web host basically provides the service which allows your website (and all the information within your site) to be accessible online. These web hosts have computers (called servers) which are directly linked to the internet. and they have the ability to host thousands of websites.

There are different types of web host providers. You can rent directly from a company who owns a main server or you can rent from a reseller who basically rents from the main server provider and then rents to you.

With these two web hosts they may come in different types
1) Free hosting- This is exactly what it says on the tin, the hosting is free. You can get free hosting from your internet service provider. I would only suggest that you use free hosting if your website is for fun i.e. personal. This is because free doesn’t always mean free. The companies providing these free hosting would force you to place a banner or pop-up ads on all the pages of your website. Sometimes they also force you to receive email ads from the sponsors.

There are more disadvantages to using a free hosting account and this will be further explained in later posts.

If you were to host a professional business site on these free hosts, your customers would see these advertising and would know that you weren’t as professional as you want to appear.

2) Shared hosting- These servers host thousands of websites. I would suggest that you use this type of hosting for your business site.

3) Dedicated hosting- These are for large websites which have over 5000 visitors a day, or if they want a higher level of security. In this case, the server would host just your site and no one else. I would only suggest this if you know anything about website management or can hire someone else to do it for you.

Different types of domain names

You should also bear in mind that there are many different types of domain names on the internet. There are international and country specific types of domain extensions.

The international domain name extensions which are recognised around the world are:

.dotcom (or .com)- this is the most common type of domain name extension. It stands for commercial organisations. I highly recommend this for your business if you hope to sell globally or in the usa. In selling ebooks, you may as well sell globally because there is no shipping costs to you. So I do advice registering a domain name with a dotcom extension. But, if you have a domain name idea and it says that the dotcom extension has been taken, you can try to use other extensions.
.org- this was originally for non-profit organisations but is becoming more popular as dotcom names are being used up.
.net- this was originally just for network services such as internet service providers (ISPs- AOL, BT broadband). It is now currently accessible to anyone i.e. anyone with an internet business can use it without any restrictions.

New international domain names

.info- Should be used for websites that provide information
.biz- This is for business websites

Some country-specific domain names:

1. .co.uk- this is the standard domain name extension used for UK businesses.
2. .us- this is used by US businesses

When choosing a domain name it is important that you consider many factors.
- Your domain name can be used as your business name. When choosing a domain name try to remember this so that the domain name is relevant to what your business is about. This is because you want your customers to know what your business is about. In the bricks and mortar world, people can look at your store and see what you sell. But, in the internet, your domain name is basically the only clue as to what your business is about. For example if you are selling ebooks about hair and beauty, don’t make your domain name tvguides.com. It would just be confusing to your customer.

- Easy to remember (and catchy)
It is important that the domain name you choose is easy for others (i.e. your customers) to remember. This is a very obvious point. You want your customers to remember you when they need something that you sell. Lets take the above example, if you are selling hair and beauty ebooks, you would want an easy domain name so that when your customers need some hair and beauty tips, they would remember that you sell ebooks on their required subject. They would also remember your name to tell their friends etc.

- It should include keywords of the product that you are trying to sell so as to improve search engine ranking. For example if you are selling hair and beauty ebooks, you should try to write down all the keywords that are relevant to hair and beauty.

- Your domain name for your main website should ideally not include hyphens. For example take a look at my domain name ebookpackagedeals.com. I would probably improve the search engine ranking of my website if I used ebook-package-deals.com. But, my customers may not remember the hyphens in the name. Their first instinct would be to type in a name without the hyphen included. This would mean that I would be sending traffic to another website without the hyphens. Later on when I have some more money I will register the domain name with the hyphen in it though. I think it is very important that you know that if you have a name that is hyphenated and you don’t own the non-hyphenated name, you will basically be sending traffic to another website without the hyphenated name.

- You should try to avoid using words that are spelt differently in different countries. For example, center is spelt centre in the UK.

All the rules above are not compulsory. There are many successful online businesses that do not use these rules. For example, yahoo.com, amazon.com. We all know what these companies are about but their name isn’t really relevant to their business. I mean what has the word ‘yahoo’ got to do with emails.

So, what is a domain name?
As I explained in a previous post, a domain name is part of your website address (or URL) which comes after www. For example, in www.ebookpackagedeals.com the domain name is ebookpackagedeals.com.

You don’t have to have a domain name for your website. For instance, with this blog, I didn’t buy a domain name. I am basically sharing bloggers domain name. Many people who register with blogger.com have the domain name: domainnameofyourchoice.blogspot.com.

So mine is ebook-biz-beginners-guide.blogspot.com. To shorten it, I could omit the blogspot and buy a domain name ebook-biz-beginners-guide.com. But, I don’t want to just yet.

With my ebook website I have got a domain name. I suggest that you also buy domain names for your ebook selling websites (or any other business website). It makes great marketing sense because it helps to make your website (and therefore your business) appear more professional and credible. There are other advantages of having a domain name for your website.

You can have exclusive email addresses to your website e.g. for my website,

support@ebookpackagedeals.com is my email address I use so that people can contact me for help. I also have another which I will be using on ebay called ebay@ebookpackagedeals.com. So this means that I can separate my website requests from my ebay ones.

How to start an ebook business

So the question now is, how do you start an ebook business? I will now explain what I have learnt briefly:

1) Choose and register a domain name
A domain name is the part of the address of your site which comes after www. e.g. ebookpackagedeals.com

2) Webhost
You need a webhost to provide webspace so that you can upload your website to the internet. This means that your website can now be available to other internet users (i.e. not just to you on your computer).

3) You then need to get your website
There are many ways that you can get a website
- You can buy a turnkey website- ie. a website that is already made
- You can get someone else to develop one for you OR
- You can do your own

4) eBooks
You now need to find quality ebooks. You can:
- write your own
- buy ebooks with resell rights
- use public domain books

5) Publish (upload) your website and ebooks to the web

6) You now need to promote your website so as to attract customers

Voila! You now have your online ebook business.

Why start an ebook business?

There are many reasons why I decided to start selling ebooks. One such reason is that the internet is used by billions of people everyday. Many of us need the internet to find information. But, the problem with this is that the information may not be readily available at one specific site. I don't know about you but I have on many occasions spent hours on the internet trying to find information about certain subjects only to end up forgetting what I was looking for in the first place.

The idea of ebooks is to have readily available, the information one needs right on their pc.
With ebooks, readers can also gain extra information through links to other websites.

Now, you know the advantages of ebooks, I would like to tell you why I decided to enter this market.

The start-up cost is low- Unlike in the bricks and mortar world, I don't need to pay for any storage space for my ebooks. All I need is my computer. I also would only need to pay a small fee to host my website and domain name (I will be further explaining later on).
Shipping- The ebook can be downloaded by my customers on their computer so I wouldn't need to worry whether my product got to the buyer on time and intact.
And most importantly, the music download market has exploded (I'm sure you all have heard about ipods and iTunes). This makes me think that the same could happen to ebooks. I don't know about you guys but I want to be there when it explodes.

Firstly, for all newbies out there, I will try to explain briefly what ebooks are and then explain to you why I have chosen to enter this business.

Well the term ebook stands for electronic book. An electronic book is a digital version of a book. Simply put, ebooks are books which are bought online, downloaded online and read online (although you can print them out and then read them).

eBook Biz Beginners Guide Intro

Hello and welcome to my blog,

The reason I am starting this blog is because I have just started an ebook business and as a result I am bursting with so much information. I feel that in order to remember everything, I need someway to organise and document all my learnings in order to make everything clear for me. This blog will also hopefully clarify what I do and don’t know about the ebook business. So I thought what better way to do this than to start a blog at the same time as I start my e-book business. Yes I know, you all are probably wondering why not write a diary. But that would take up so much paper (wasteful) and I would probably get hand cramp :). Also with a blog I need to be more disciplined in that I would have to submit a posting regularly therefore I would also need to be strict in my learning.

You know, I originally wanted to make this blog for myself. But I thought why be selfish. I do feel that many people out there, who are thinking of starting an ebook business, may find the information that I have gathered worthwhile in some way. Also, I do hope that all those with established Ebook businesses can also post some useful tips here which can benefit all newbies.

In this blog, I will be writing everything that I have learnt including marketing methods that I will be using. I will be writing everything that I have tried as well as all the ups and downs that I come across in this business. I will also be listing and reviewing the websites, articles, e-books and software that I am using. Note I will only be reviewing the things that I like and have found helpful to me. Also I hope that many of you experts out there will list the tools you have found useful to you whilst setting up your own ebook company.

I really hope that all of you reading this blog will sign up for my RSS feeds so that you can be kept up-to-date on this blog. I also want you all to feel comfortable in posting questions, suggestions and other useful information to this blog.

Remember I am not an expert in this field and I definitely am not a professional writer. I am just a newbie trying to build a successful business. All I can say is that this blog is from the heart and I hope you enjoy it.
