Nipa Doshi nasce nel 1971 a Bombay da una famiglia Gujarati.

Nel 1997 è a Londra, dove si laurea al Royal College of Art e dove rientra dopo un breve periodo passato in India per lavorare con alcuni artigiani.

Qui incontra Jonathan Levien, nato in Scozia, che ha da poco concluso un master anche lui presso il Royal College.

La sinergia fra Nipa e Johnatan funziona da subito: infatti nel 2000 creano un loro studio e si sposano. Assieme sviluppano un concetto di design particolare e innovativo che riunisce due approcci distinti e complementari al lavoro: Nipa, fortemente radicata nella cultura indiana, e Jonathan, avviato alla progettazione del design industriale, celebrano assieme un

ibrido culturale che sintetizza tecnologia, narrazione, design industriale e artigianale.

Amoje Food Capital plays on the idea of the spacial, visual landmark as a gathering place. It creates a recognizable, iconic location in the space for people to gather, meet, socialize and eat in color! The organic “islands” not only infuse the space with character and contemporary aesthetic, they serve as a pivotal landmark around each column, where people meet and gather. The islands are centrifugal in arrangement, inviting users to interact, communicate and socialize in the space. This creates a lively dynamic setting which generates a sense of place for gathering and will ultimately make the space successful. The undulating perimeter of the area is perforated to create visual openings for service counters. Snack locations are “carved” into the surrounding perimeter creating with strong visual highlights for the eye inside. The floor plays off the linear patterns of the perimeter wall creating a strong wireframe that creates a sense of continuous dynamism and motion within the space.

Bvlgari London, un indirizzo intimista.

La terza proprietà alberghiera della Maison Bvlgari, un palazzo londinese di Knithsbridge, si rivela un elegante pied-à-terre firmato dall’architetto italiano Antonio Citterio, per un vero e proprio lusso d’autore.

All’interno le fotografie dell’hotel richiamano l’immagine di un luogo grandioso, ma è puramente intimista. Gli equilibri degli spazi sottolineano le giuste proporzioni. Partendo proprio dalla lobby si ha la sensazione di essere all’ingresso di una residenza privata: sedute basse e tavoli in marmo costellano gli ambienti addolciti da tende in panno colore grigio lucido che ammorbidiscono l’atmosfera. Le colonne ricoperte da lastre nere fanno da eco ad un suolo riflettente; vasi monolitici alti un metro e venti, sormontati da ortensie, assorbono la luce di qualche rara vetrina da esposizione ed al contempo mascherano i volumi.

Intimista, dunque, l’indirizzo londinese che conta 85 camere. Dopo la prima apertura a Milano nel 2004, seguita da quella di Bali nel 2006, l’hotel di Knithsbridge è perfettamente inserito nell’elegante quartiere che lo accoglie: 39 suite e 7 penthouses da 250mq, accentuate da colori atonali e grandi sale da bagno immacolate, sono dotate di sauna individuale, un richiamo alla prestigiosa spa, diventata ormai un vero e proprio culto per la Maison Bvlgari, caratterizzata da mosaici oro e verde acqua e muri di pietra gessosi. In seguito troviamo il Ristorante, tempio della gastronomia italiana, delineato da una grande scala a spirale dai tratti modernisti, avvolta nello spazio da montanti metallici.

Un anacronismo nel secolo in cui i brand di lusso giocano al rilancio, dove il tempo è il vero lusso. Ovunque gli interni focalizzano il punto di vista sulla passione per il design e non sul marchio di gioielleria. Per ultimo, il bar si scopre come un enorme volume ellittico, pronto ad accogliere calici e bottiglie di champagne che richiamano le creazioni storiche firmate Bvlgari.

Possiamo davvero dire che Antonio Citterio per questo progetto ha avuto carta bianca.

Design sull’acqua

Essenziale, dinamico, scenografico, con una tecnologia celata da una veste minimalista e “pura”.

Una scelta estetica fuori dal comune ma innovativa, destinata a far parlare molto di sé. Il tutto mettendo ai primi posti anche il comfort, le prestazioni e la sicurezza della navigazione.

Ad interpretare un nuovo concetto “visivo” di motoscafo è un’azienda che ha sede in una nazione europea cinta dalle Alpi e priva di sbocchi sul mare: l’Austria. Il costruttore di cui stiamo parlando è Frauscher, un’azienda che per realizzare la sua ultima creazione ha cercato di miscelare il meglio. La qualità professionale delle persone coinvolte nella progettazione dell’858 Fantom non lascia spazio a dubbi. Un mix di tecnici e designer in grado di far nascere quello che la Casa descrive una “fata morgana” che sfreccia sull’acqua.

Thomas Gerzer è il geniale progettista Frauscher a cui si devono modelli di successo come il 717 GT (barca europea nel 2010) e i più recenti 1017 GT e Lido. Harry Miesbauer - con collaborazioni all’attivo anche per Luca Brenta, Wally e Maxi Dolphin – ha invece progettato la carena che permette al Fantom 858 di scivolare sull’acqua garantendo una navigazione morbida e confortevole anche alle alte velocità.L’aspetto puramente estetico è opera invece del team KISKA, famoso studio di design austriaco. Presentarli è necessario per capire l’origine di questo motoscafo. A loro si deve il design degli interni dei più recenti modelli Audi e lo stile “tagliente” e geometrico dei modelli di grande successo della Casa motociclistica austriaca KTM.

Il loro lavoro non ha ignorato quelli che sono gli “stilemi” delle barche Frauscher (come il bottaccio a forma di Z in acciaio inox sulle fiancate, il grande parabrezza privo di cornici o l’enorme coperta di prua in teak) rinnovati dai tocchi innovativi e caratteristici che fanno dell’858 Fantom un modello d’avanguardia capace di reinventare il design dei motoscafi. Quest’imbarcazione, che può ospitare 7 persone, ha un ottimo livello di motorizzazioni “base”: due i propulsori V8 disponibili da 300 CV a benzina o gasolio, potenza che permette al motoscafo di raggiungere i 40 nodi. Velocità che può arrivare ai 48 se a motorizzarlo sono i propulsori più potenti da 8.2 litri da 430 CV. A richiesta possono essere installati, tra gli altri, un’ancora elettrica in acciaio inossidabile, un bow thruster per facilitare le manovre di ormeggio, un bimini di facile utilizzo e un sistema audio BOSE.

L’858 Fantom sarà presentato ufficialmente al pubblico italiano al prossimo Salone Nautico di Genova 2013 dal Cantiere Nautico Feltrinelli, importatore esclusivo della Frauscher in Italia.

The Tamdeen Group Headquarters

Tamdeen Group’s new 55,000 square foot corporate headquarters was initiated under the aegis of architectural firm RTKL International. However, due to the global recession, RTKL’s Corporate Interiors Group in Los Angeles and Chicago were dissolved. It was then decided that Yvonne Colacion would continue to lead the project through completion. This was a natural decision as Colacion was the Vice President of Corporate Interiors at RTKL’s Los Angeles office, and had developed a rapport with and understanding of the client. The success of any design project is largely about professional chemistry between the owner and/or owner’s representatives and when this works, the momentum stays in place. Colacion completed the design of the corporate offices; with the client team and relationships well-established, this transition was smooth and effortless.

In early conversations with the Tamdeen Group on the topic of branding this prestigious real estate development company, having a creative understanding of integrated real estate commercial development, and the enhancement of communities, was critical. Having just completed a fairly involved brand analysis with the brand specialist FITCH, Tamdeen Group’s concept of its brand was well in place.

The design needed to reinforce their brand and mission statement but also needed to be authentic to the Tamdeen Group’s visionary perspective of the retail experience in the Middle East, as well as its thriving commitment to the firm’s surrounding community. Colacion Studio focused on creating a three- dimensional physical space, which translated the Tamdeen brand both internally and externally. It was important to this client that the physical space be both dynamic and charismatic, as well as celebrate the firm’s cultural heritage.

In addition to celebrating the Tamdeen Group’s commitment to its community and history, there was also a need to celebrate its diverse workforce—creating a tapestry, through design, of the world’s leading international professionals. Tamdeen Group not only has local presence in Middle East real estate development, but also has a true international reach into the retail world. Despite the trend towards virtual retail centers via on-line communities, people in general still desire a need to come together and share information in a corporate setting. Planning work environments today for agile and dynamic businesses such as the Tamdeen Group need to include a keen observation of not only full-time work environments, but diverse work styles, as well. Work station modules and quantities were designed to meet this future need.

With Colacion Studio’s translation of the brand, coupled with the changing evolution of work and play, the firm created a planning and design approach which spoke to each person’s individual work persona, and community persona -- all of which reinforced the diverse cultures within Tamdeen Group. It was this approach, which assisted the firm in creating a visually exciting and dynamic environment celebrating the firm’s eclectically cultural workforce.

The geographical location of the headquarters also inspired Colacion Studio’s final design of the interiors. In order to take advantage of Kuwait’s desert sun, Colacion incorporated a large skylight to bring daylight into the space. The sun’s heat was strategically filtered through various methods, including the installation of a synthetic mesh window shade in a conference room, specialized UV films on the skylights and large windows, as well as a suspended screen of honeycomb aluminum on the ground level, which partially veils the top flight of the teak and steel stairway. Also, to evoke the feeling of being in a desert oasis, the firm thoughtfully added a vertical garden wall in the ground-level reception area, as well as two more stacked garden walls in the double-height atrium, totaling a 20-foot high lush green feature wall.

Colacion Studio creatively incorporated cultural elements of the Gulf region throughout the 55,000 square foot space, by featuring traditional Arab geometric patterns (custom designed by Colacion Studio) on various surfaces and textiles; as well as artful Arabic script, which was used as signage in several spaces.

Daqing Highway Passenger Transportation Hub is in the intersection between Century Avenue and Longfeng Street. Its main building consist of a three-storey station house and a fourteen-storey information center, and they are connect together harmoniously. The overall project construction area is nearly 30,000 square meters, and is designed in early 2009, completed in late 2010.

Daqing City is famous for China’s largest oil city, and it is located in the northern alpine zone, which has great geographical features. In this case we try to breakthrough the traditional traffic building mode, and give the passenger building some cultural connotations. So the shape of building is from the ice and snow culture, and considered Northeast snowy landform features, white shapes post and down like winter hill standing above the earth, which have beautiful profile. The details of the building facade form like branch with steel structure, so enrich the level of the facade and also strengthen the design concept. The interior space of passenger transportation highlights the open and transparent feelings, with a three-storey hall, which linked the function of each space, providing a good flow line and great view.

The passenger transportation building is made mainly with steel structure, and set some of the concrete structure. The steel structure is the way to achieve the complex facade shape and large-span roof. And the steel structure combine with concrete structure to support the formation of a stable structural system.

Halley VI: World's First Relocatable Research Centre

Halley VI, the world's first re-locatable research facility, has officially opened last month. The new research station is designed by Hugh Broughton Architects with AECOM and constructed by Galliford Try for the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

Halley VI pushes the boundaries of design in a life critical environment, creating a beacon for sustainable living in the Polar Regions to draw attention to some of the most significant science conducted on our planet.

Halley VI is the product of an extraordinary and intense 8-year collaboration with BAS which began with an international competition-winning design for a modular facility. The challenge was to create excellent laboratory and living accommodation that was capable of withstanding extreme winter weather, of being raised sufficiently to stay above metres of annual snowfall, and of being relocated inland periodically to avoid being stranded on an iceberg as the floating ice shelf moves towards the sea

The new research station, which replaces the 20-year old Halley V facility, is the sixth to be built on the floating Brunt Ice Shelf in a region that has established itself as an important natural laboratory for studying the Earth's magnetic field and the near-space atmosphere. It was data from Halley that led to the 1985 BAS discovery of the ozone hole.

The £25.8 million station is built with an innovative concept featuring hydraulically elevated ski based modules, ensuring the station can be relocated inland periodically as the ice shelf flows towards the sea. The station combines seven interlinking blue modules used for bedrooms, laboratories, offices and energy plants, with a central two-storey red module featuring a double-height light filled social space. Interiors have been specially designed to support crew numbers ranging from 52 in summer to 16 during the three months of total darkness in winter when temperatures at the base drop as low as -56C

Il canto della terra

Ampliamento della cascina Adelaide a Barolo

A Barolo si schiude un evento per la vite che, cresciuta sulle basse colline delle Langhe, sazia di luce e di sole, dona l’uva, canto della terra. Ma è sotto una verde coltre, morbida come i paesaggi circostanti, che, in una oscurità misteriosa, nasce una nuova segreta architettura. In uno strato di terra che sta a metà tra il cielo e le radici dei vigneti, nasce di questa nuova cantina il cui progetto prende forma quasi seguendo i percorsi naturali della metamorfosi che porta l’uva a trasformarsi in vino brillante.

l progetto si inserisce con grande delicatezza e sensibilità ambientale al fondo di una valle, concluso tra una strada vicinale ed il piccolo Rio della Fava. Proprio l’attenta ricerca e sensitività nei
confronti delle colline circostanti ha suggerito ai progettisti un volume completamente coperto di terreno inerbito, con l’impostazione del piano generale dell’ampliamento a quota di – 5,50 metri circa sotto il livello dell’esistente cascina Adelaide.
Il nuovo e silenzioso volume, in questo modo, si avvicina a quello esistente con riservatezza, ma con la forza di un’architettura nuova e contemporanea. L’ampliamento emerge solo con una altezza
minima (m. 2,5) verso l’estremità nord (a valle), la copertura verde, poi, allontanandosi dal fabbricato esistente, scende fi no a terra, raccordando morbidamente il nuovo volume con il piano di campagna esistente, creando una piccola aia ad arco: con questa distribuzione il volume si estende come una piccola cresta di collina che scende verso valle come tutte le dorsali delle colline delle Langhe.

L’edifi cio si presenta così come una dorsale allungata ed affusolata, totalmente interrato con una copertura composta da impermeabilizzazione con guaine poliolefi niche con sovrastante protezione di manto in terra vegetale dello spessore minimo di cm 40, oltre ai diversi strati drenanti, isolanti e protettivi. L’ultimo strato, in terreno vegetale, è inerbito con sistemi speciali stabilizzati e raccordato con il terreno limitrofo verso il rio in modo da defi nire e riordinare con morbide modellazioni di raccordo la copertura della cantina con l’infossamento esistente del rio naturale senza sfi orarne i cigli che rimangono quelli naturali.

Ma la lievitazione della piccola dorsale di copertura richiede uno squarcio di terra che sollevandosi apre sul lato ovest lungo la strada una grande apertura della terra che si solleva per lasciare visibile il portico di ingresso ed il cortiletto circolare. Il cortiletto circolare cattura l’attenzione di chi perviene da valle presentando una parete trasparente ove si aprono gli accessi degli operatori, delle
merci, dei mezzi meccanici. Il percorso prosegue verso il ventre dell’edifi cio ove avviene la trasformazione dell’uva in vino per ri-uscire dallo stresso portico ove ha prima trovato l’accesso. “La fermentazione e la trasformazione del frutto uva ha provocato la lievitazione del terreno di copertura”.
L’unica emergenza del complesso nasce da una tasca aperta verso la collina, in diretta ammirazione della terra da cui nasce il frutto prezioso delle viti: è il luogo della degustazione e di rappresentanza dal quale si può scendere nella cantina sottostante, oppure, all’esterno, seguendo un percorso sinuoso che riporta al punto di ingresso principale nell’aia circolare.
E’ un edifi cio “di terra” che canta il trionfo del frutto della vite.

Tecnologia della costruzione:

La costruzione è eseguita con la polvere di “terra cotta in alti forni rotanti“ impastata con acqua ed essenze litoidi di diversa granulometria del tanto disprezzato “cemento”.

La struttura portante è coperta di terreno vegetale con interposizioni di strati protettivi ed impermeabilizzanti con guarnizioni di protezione delle estremità delle strutture, in lamiere di rame di intenso colore verde, stabilizzate chimicamente con solfati, proprio come si tratta la vite per difenderla dai parassiti.

Lo strato di copertura di terra vegetale è mantenuto vivo con un sistema particolare di irrigazione automatica che assicura un completo manto sempreverde. Questo sistema prevede, a soli
30 cm di profondità, dei sistemi continui di contenitori di acqua che, evaporando con la temperatura forniscono di acqua l’apparato radicale del tappeto erboso.

Le pareti vetrate, verso la fronte nord sono sostenute da strutture in leghe metalliche scarsamente visibili dall’esterno in modo da non apparire con troppo peso nelle scansioni dei volumi vetrati ma che evidenziano le superfi ci vetrate continue.

Le superfi ci vetrate per illuminazione e ventilazione degli spazi destinati alle lavorazioni (vinifi cazione, imbottigliamento, confezioni,) rispettano la dimensione di 1/8 della superfi cie di pavimento pur tenendo presente che sono utilizzati impianti di ventilazione meccanica automatizzata mediante sensori di CO2, con immissione di aria fresca a temperatura ambiente e con spazi per invecchiamento climatizzati come richiesto dalla più approfondita tecnica di produzione vinicola che richiede appropriati gradi di umidità relativa. Ogni campata della struttura (maglia di 8×8 ml) è chiusa verso la fronte del Rio della Fava mediante parete controterra in calcestruzzo impermeabilizzato. Su questa parete si innesta una apertura a bocca di lupo che affi ora fino al manto erboso soprastante per aprire una corrente d’aria controllata per ogni campata sottostante.

La coda verso valle dell’edifi cio ipogeo riduce la altezza interna iniziale (5,50m), che risulta degradare fi no al livello più basso, di copertura della rimessa a nord, raggiungendo i soli 2,00m.

Studio Marco Piva, together with its Chinese Partner DGI Design, were asked to

look at Feng Tai’s future ﬁnancial center, an area of 16 square kilometers, and

suggest ways in which it could create a whole of it, more than the sum of its parts.

The proposal made by Studio Marco Piva and DGI Design aims to maximize land

use without sacriﬁcing green space, creating solutions that will make Feng Tai

both an international icon and sustainable city of the future.

A radical new proposal for a city center which works within existing urban

parameters but creates a new type of living and working environment.

Control development e ectively, deal with tra c, create an attractive, e cient

and livable environment which could position the City Financial District for growth

and success. A plan that follows the principals of the twelfth ﬁve year plan to

create a scientiﬁc and harmonious environment which balances economic

opportunity and social development.

Philosophically western planners have been working under the assumption that

city planning should look at three values live, work and play we would add two

values which we believe are essential both for cities and society "contribute" and

"fulﬁll". Without these societal values cities become little more than collectives for

the pursuit of self interest and pleasure.

Cities to be great must provide economic opportunities and create communities,

one has only to talk to those who live in New York, London, Paris, Rome, Singapore,

Tokyo etc... about their sense of their city and their identiﬁcation with it. To

understand the value of community.

These ideas are not new to China, they are in fact part of China's culture and

philosophical history, Daoism, Confusianism and the ancient systems and

philosophies refer to them explicitly. We believe that to be complete China must

embrace its culture and values and balance economic and social forces and

Virtuoso esempio di “universal design”, lo smartphone LG Touch si è aggiudicato il 20 Novembre a Tokyo il prestigioso Grand Prize, che non veniva assegnato da oltre 3 anni per mancanza di un progetto all’altezza delle aspettative della multinazionale Coreana.

Merito del 27enne italiano Andrea Ponti, che – classico esempio di cervello in fuga – vive e lavora da 6 anni in Giappone come designer e Art Director nel settore dell’arredamento e della moda. Il progetto è nato da una domanda complessa che Andrea si è posto:

“E’ davvero possibile creare un oggetto che si adatti perfettamente a qualsiasi utente e che, a ciascuno di essi, possa fornire una piattaforma di interazione flessibile e personalizzata?”.

Smartphone di ultima generazione, LG Touch è dotato di un pannello tattile in rilievo che si deforma nelle 3 dimensioni grazie ad una membrana polimerica attraverso il passaggio di micro-impulsi elettrici. La tastiera può trasformarsi dunque da codice Brail alle corde di una chitarra, da pulsantiera a texture.

Un ritorno al tatto, dopo la diffusione del touch, per consentire ad utenti non vedenti di interagire con lo smartphone nonostante l’handicap visivo, ma anche facilitare l’uso agli utenti anziani e permettere loro di scrivere e navigare con una tastiera in rilievo. Inoltre LG Touch offre la possibilità di creare un nuovo livello di interazione basato sul concetto di feedback tattile e visivo: ad esempio un tessuto o un’immagine, possono essere riprodotte in rilievo sulla piattaforma inferiore del telefono per consentire una percezione sempre più reale e sempre più vicina al concetto di realtà virtuale.

Un oggetto in cui ergonomia, interazione, estetica e prestazioni di ultima generazione si fondono.

Nafir è la nuova lampada nata dall’incontro fra l’immaginazione di Karim Rashid e il know-how produttivo di Axo Light: eccola raccontata da designer e azienda.

Karim Rashid, dove è nata l’ispirazione per il disegno di Nafir? Pura immaginazione o un’associazione di idee?
Karim Rashid: Nafir è pura immaginazione. Ho iniziato a fare i primi schizzi pensando alla luce come complementare al suono. Da vent’anni sono affascinato dall’idea di superfici piane che vengono trasformate creando forme fluide. Così, originariamente, ho immaginato un piano tirato verso l’alto in diversi punti: così trasformata, la superficie assumeva forme organiche, fluide, somiglianti a quelle di una tromba. Volevo ottenere una lampada che fosse un po’ scultura, bella anche a luci spente, e che fosse anche funzionale grazie al LED. Volevo anche una famiglia di lampade le cui forme potessero essere raggruppate organicamente per creare un fantastico panorama fatto di luce e forma. La luce è un meraviglioso fenomeno immateriale. Crea uno stato d’animo, cambia emozioni e stati mentali, crea benessere. Allo stesso tempo la lampada, come oggetto, può essere un’estensione simbolica della funzione oppure può essere pura forma scultorea. Negli ultimi dieci anni nessun altro elemento della casa è cambiato così radicalmente come l’illuminazione: le forme possono essere pura espressione di design, mentre le fonti luminose sono più efficienti e flessibili di quanto fossero in passato.

Disegnare una lampada e disegnare arredamento: qual è la differenza? Karim Rashid: L’illuminazione si differenzia dall’arredamento in due punti fondamentali: una è la tecnologia, l’altra è l’interazione con l’utilizzatore, essendo la luce spesso più passiva e meno tattile dell’arredamento. Poiché l’interazione con la lampada si limita spesso a schiacciare un interruttore, è ovvio che la lampada debba essere funzionale, ma deve anche avere una forma attraente, particolare, che comunica con l’utilizzatore anche quando la luce è spenta (e cioè la maggior parte del tempo). Nafir è un esempio di lampada che è interessante da accesa e da spenta. Nafir è una scultura funzionale. E’ dinamica, la forma fluida diventa espressione della luce stessa. Lorenzo Truant, Axo Light, come si è svolto il passaggio dallo schizzo al prodotto finito? Lorenzo Truant: Quando abbiamo visto il primo concept, abbiamo subito capito quale fosse l’immagine mentale di Karim: una costruzione tutta digitale di un piano dai contorni fluidi, il quale viene sollevato su uno o più punti in modo da formare delle curve con delle cuspidi. E’ quello che avviene se, su una tela elastica tesa e dai bordi curvi, si afferra una o più parti e si tira verso l’alto. Da questa prima immagine astratta Axo Light è partita, ha razionalizzato alcuni aspetti tipologici e tecnologici, ha fatto crescere l’idea e l’ha resa reale: si può dire che Karim è il padre di Nafir e Axo Light la madre?

Nafir è il nome di una tromba nordafricana, usata per ottenere suoni particolarmente squillanti: perché questo nome per una lampada? Lorenzo Truant: Abbiamo scelto il nome insieme a Karim. Nel suo studio di New York si sente molta musica, e l’ispirazione stessa del progetto viene dalla musica. La forma di Nafir è vicina a quella di una tromba. Ebbene, il nafir è una tromba di piccole dimensioni, di origine persiana e poi diffusa in tutto il Nord Africa, dove viene ancora usata. In fondo è un omaggio alle origini nordafricane del designer. Mi piace pensare che la visione avanguardista di Rashid, completamente condivisa da Axo Light, possa contenere delle particelle di tradizione: mi ha sempre emozionato pensare che il futuro è presente anche grazie a ciò che è passato o, se vogliamo, che noi guardiamo il futuro come una “corsa verso l’archetipico”. Questo vale anche per la collezione Axo Light e i suoi contenuti. Come si colloca Nafir all’interno della collezione Axo Light? Lorenzo Truant: Una lampada “easy”, ma non banale, di grande attrattiva per come è stata concepita ma allo stesso tempo di facile lettura: era questo l’obiettivo comune all’azienda e al designer. E’ molto importante che esista un buon feeling fra designer e azienda. Il designer deve poter esprimere liberamente la propria personalità cercando però di comprendere le esigenze del brand. L’azienda produttrice deve invece saper cogliere le proposte del designer che maggiormente la rappresentano e farle sue. Solo questa sintesi consente di avere un prodotto perfetto.

Quali sono le applicazioni di Nafir? E il target? Karim Rashid: Nafir è perfetta per essere applicata a gruppi: questa flessibilità la rende ideale per spazi pubblici, come hotel e ristoranti, e anche per spazi residenziali. Già immagino un ristorante con un solo lungo tavolo che percorre tutta la lunghezza dello spazio, sopra il quale corre tutta una linea di Nafir collegate l’una all’altra… sarebbe fantastico. Viaggio gran parte dell’anno, quindi trascorro molto tempo in hotel. Penso costantemente a questi ambienti e a come li cambierei o migliorerei. E’ sorprendente, ma sembra che molti hotel considerino l’illuminazione come una necessità secondaria e l’illuminazione è molto spesso inadeguata. La luce perfetta è quella che si adatta a tutti i tipi di ambienti dell’hotel, da un corridoio stretto ad una lobby aperta, e permette all’architetto di riempire e valorizzare lo spazio. Nafir è un esempio perfetto: le sue forme si uniscono per creare un panorama dinamico e sempre unico, un sistema di illuminazione espressivo/teatrale che non sacrifica la funzione. Ognuno potrà sperimentare Nafir in maniera veramente unica. Lorenzo Truant: Nafir può essere apprezzata da clienti, quali architetti e progettisti, che vogliono un prodotto sofisticato, ma anche da qualsiasi cliente Axo Light che cerchi un prodotto glamour e di alta qualità per illuminare, per esempio, un tavolo da pranzo della propria casa, sia in versione singola sia a gruppi associati da tre o da una luce. In sintesi, credo che il target a cui proporre Nafir sia composto da tutte quelle categorie di clienti che desiderano un prodotto semplice, contemporaneo, originale, di alta qualità produttiva.Come illumina Nafir? Lorenzo Truant: La luce delle sospensioni deve essere più o meno concentrata verso il basso: una luce che chiama a raccolta attorno a sé e non si diffonde in altre parti dello spazio. Una volta scelta la tipologia di luce che si adattava bene al prodotto, ci siamo posti la questione se usare un faretto alogeno o a LED. Abbiamo scelto di usare la sorgente luminosa che guarda al futuro, cioè quella a LED. Apparentemente è quella che costa di più, ma la durata di questi faretti si attesta ad oltre 35.000 ore di utilizzo e quindi la spesa iniziale viene presto recuperata. Karim Rashid: Nell’illuminazione la nuova tecnologia, LED e OLED, ha permesso ai designer di espandere le loro idee sulla forma della lampada. Non siamo più sottomessi alle limitazioni delle lampade alogene, e così oggi (e in futuro) le lampade possono avere nuove forme, completamente diverse da quelle del passato. Ovviamente, per me è molto eccitante, perché posso lavorare puramente sull’ispirazione.

Nafir di Axo Light Design: Karim Rashid

With its thirty floors and at over two hundred and fifty meters high, Al faisaliah is the tallest building in Rijadh and what characterizes a most obviously its skyline.

The skyscraper, built almost entirely with reinforced concrete, is a collaboration between the studio of Londoner Norman Foster & Partners and society consulting engineers Buro Happold.

The offices, which occupy the thirty floors, join the vast area located on the top level. It is the "globe," the country's highest restaurant, in turn consisting of three floors and enclosed in a great golden sphere of twenty-four meters in diameter.

This building features a pyramid, therefore, the outlook of the Saudi Arabian city, giving the impression of mastering everything that happens below.

The Center is architecture that strongly characterizes the urban landscape while representing the momentum of Riyadh toward modernity.

The skyscraper is part of a larger complex that includes a great space, raised seven meters from the plane of the street, a luxury hotel with more than two hundred rooms, a shopping mall, a mega two hundred thousand parking spaces, and a residential area with about a hundred apartments
SituationAl Faisaliyah Complex is located in the city of Riyadh.
Riyadh, which in Arabic means "The Gardens," is the capital and largest city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, located in the region of Nejd. It is also the provincial capital of Riyadh. It's in the middle of the Arabian Peninsula, in a large plateau surrounded by vast desert and the oasis. The aridity of the major Saudi soil means the water has to be brought, in part, from the sea in the Persian Gulf.
The pyramid structure of the tower will make us more "friendly" if its edges take on a slight curvature.
Although the pyramid was developed mainly in height, it is not without its share of homage to the great pyramids of Egypt. Like the pyramids of Egypt remain in history as the memory of one of the greatest civilizations in history, this new pyramid dominates the city of Riyadh, capital of Saudi Arabia, which is today one of the countries with the most power and international influence, thanks to owning some of the largest oilfields in the world.
No one is spared the large field located on the top floor of the tower in perfect balance, but nevertheless seems to be rolling down to a valley and breath of wind. Figures such as the simple triangle and the circle also had an important meaning in the Egyptian civilization.
At the top, in correspondence with the field, the envelope of cement takes a lighter consistency and cadences, with large openings that offer a wide panoramic view of the city.
The innermost part of the building is occupied with elevators, escalators and technical areas.
On the top floor of the building is the vast area of 24 meters in diameter where the restaurant is distributed over three floorss that make up the interior of the sphere.
Below the plaza is developed, however, a space for a banquet hall, but whose use may change thanks to a structured interior that uses removable and mobile panels. This is an area that can accommodate up to three thousand people, and comes as a huge open space, and that is totally supported by elements in between.

Another element that characterizes it is the course of the facades, whose tapered profile concludes with a marked narrowing, which at the top designs a sharp arc. The horizontal lines that make up the three blocks of the facade are some parapets that protrude from the plane of the facade to protect it from the harsh sun, which impacts during the 12 months of the year in these latitudes.

The square of the tower suffers, therefore, a gradual transformation along the vertical development of the building.

Even if it is seen from the outside, it is inevitable to realize how it is structured in three blocks of nine, ten and eleven floors, separated by one of the other crossbeams that transfer the loads to the pillars of the columns.

To support the weight of this huge building, it was about a structure of reinforced concrete in almost all of the work.

A material that has been used to further façades is the glass that gave the tower its particularly bright and light atmosphere, despite its impressive dimensions; other materials also used are local stone and timber, next to the glass used in a multilayer system.

"Perhaps the first and most famous megachurch was the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, home to the televangelism ministry of the Reverend Robert Schuller. Completed in phases, the main sanctuary was opened for services in 1980.

"Designed by Philip Johnson, this religious reinterpretation of the crystal palace is shaped like a four pointed star. The building is huge, measuring 207 by 415 feet (63 by 125 meters), and rising to a height of 128 feet (40 meters).

"Clad in mirrored glass over a uniform space frame, the design boasts passive solar heating and wind cooling obtained through operable strips of ventilating windows.

"Originally planned to be set in a park-like environment, the building now sits in a parking lot. Portions of the exterior walls open, allowing congregants to remain in their cars while viewing the worship service."

The idea is to get people as close to the performance as possible, so, as John Burgee puts it, 'we squished the nave and pulled out the trancept.' The connection with reality is maintained through ten thousand panes of glass hung on a space-frame scaffolding like a gigantic transparent tent. From the outside its quartz-like facets shimmer in one another's mirrored surfaces and reflective pond below. Inside, the mood is hushed, the filtered light lending a cool expectant atmosphere."

The entry deadline for the 2013 Australian Interior Design Awards is Friday 1st March.The 2013 presentation of the Australian Interior Design Awards marks a decade of design excellence. The 10 year anniversary will be celebrated in style at the Melbourne's historic Plaza Ballroom, located beneath the Regent Theatre, and will feature a retrospective of past award recipients.
This national awards program is co-presented by the DIA in partnership with Diversified Exhibitions (organiser of DESIGNEX) and Architecture Media (publisher of ARTICHOKE). The DIA manages the judging process to ensure the outcomes reflect the highest standards of professional achievement. DIA members receive a 33% discount on entry fees and winners of state-based DIA Awards (for interior design/decoration) are automatically short listed for the national awards, on re-submission of their project.
