Broken Social Scene – The Call

This new Broken Social Scene track is slick and I really like the way it moves. The band is set to release an album titled Remember the Humans on May 8. Also, for those in Austin, they’re playing the Moody Amphitheater on June 8.

Cola – Skywriter’s Sigh

Here’s a clever and very easy to like gem from Cola, who have a new album, Cost Of Living Adjustment, that’ll be out on May 8.

Parts & Labor – Endless Cycles: Parts 1-4

I can’t say I ever thought we’d see another Parts & Labor album, but they actually have one on the way – it’s their first in 15 years, it’s titled Set Of All Sets, and it’s due out July 10. And because they’ve prepared a massive 79-minute LP, they’ve released four rippers along with this news.

Movie Breakdown: The Christophers

Pre-Screening Stance:

Steven Soderbergh has been on a roll as of late – both Black Bag and Presence were really slick – and now here he is with The Christophers, which features an immense combo of actors in Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel. I think it’s going to be great.

Post-Screening Ramble:

The Christophers is a wonderful little art film. The story follows a talented artist, Lori (Michaela Coel), who is approached by a pair of sneaky siblings with an offer – take a job as an assistant to their famous painter of a father, Julian Sklar (Ian McKellen), and use the opportunity to seize some of his unfinished works. Then, once the paintings are in hand, she’s to forge their completion with the goal to sell them after Julian dies. Naturally, things don’t go quite as planned, as the old man is a lot more tuned in than his kids think and he quickly figures out their scheme. What Julian doesn’t see coming though is finding himself so challenged and intrigued by Lori, and what follows is a back and forth that explores art, legacy, money, and more. Some of it is funny, some of it is sad, but it’s all sharp and tightly written. It’s also driven by stellar performances from McKellen and Coel, who embody their characters with such fervor that they pull you right in and hold your attention tight. Honestly, if there’s anything to fret about here, it’s really just that the movie is only a smidge over 90 minutes long – I could have spent hours with those two characters.

I really liked The Christophers and hope you’ll find some time to give it a go. The film hits theaters this Friday, April 17.

One Last Thought:

James Corden is in this movie and it’s the only role I’ve ever seen him in where I didn’t immediately want to figure out a way to eject him off the screen. I’d call for him to keep on trucking in the same lane but maybe it’s best that we just cherish this and not tempt fate by asking for more.

Movie Breakdown: Mother Mary

Pre-Screening Stance:

Everything about Mother Mary, from writer/director David Lowery (The Green Knight, A Ghost Story) to Anne Hathaway as a pop star to the Charlie XCX & FKA Twigs-penned soundtrack, feels right up my alley. So yeah, I can’t wait to see this very A24-looking movie from … A24.

Post-Screening Ramble:

I really liked Mother Mary, but it’s definitely one of those films that opts for a vibe over anything else. So, in other words, if you want a movie that fully explores its characters or follows an obvious narrative or delivers a clearly defined ending, then you may not be down for the ride that writer/director David Lowery offers up here. As for the story, it pretty much solely involves pop superstar Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) and her former designer/friend/something Sam (Michaela Coel) as they work to conjure up a garment for the former to wear at what could be her last performance ever. The two, who clearly have a history that extends beyond simply being colleagues, seem equally aghast and delighted to be together again, and Hathaway and Coel make the most of this setup with a supercharged chemistry that causes the duo’s fallout from years and years ago seem as fresh as ever. Apart from the two leads steadily picking each other apart, you also get a dash of Mother Mary’s music, all of which is great (so much so in fact that I’ve already pre-ordered the soundtrack on vinyl). Additionally, there’s a chunk of this movie that involves a ghost (or a spirit, or a curse, or something) and, if I had to guess, this is where some folks will get tripped up as it shifts the film over to a rather surreal track. Personally, I dug the creepy flowing fabric creature and the implied meaning of its existence, but I can see how it may not work for others.

Mother Mary isn’t for everyone, but those who are down to go with the flow (even when things get weird and heady) will find a lot to like. The movie hits theaters this Friday, April 17.

One Last Thought:

This film made me a very big fan of Michaela Coel, and I’m very excited to see her opposite Ian McKellen in Steven Soderbergh’s The Christophers (I actually have a press screening of it this week). I also can’t wait to see what she does with her remake of Bloodsport.

Well look at that, Iceage have finally announced a new album – it’s their first in a few years and it’s titled For Love Of Grace & The Hereafter (due May 29). As for this single, it’s great, especially the line “I love you in an ominous way.”

Royel Otis – Sweet Hallelujah

Here’s Royel Otis with a new one-off single that’s a bit of a slow burn but still an earworm (as the band is prone to crafting).

Anne Hathaway – My Mouth Is Lonely For You

I saw Mother Mary (review coming next week) a few days ago and really dug the soundtrack. Anne Hathaway sounds great on this FKA Twigs-penned number.

Aldous Harding – Venus In The Zinnia

This is really charming (and surprisingly accessible) new track from Aldous Harding, who is set to put out an album titled Train On The Island on May 8.

Mono – Winter Daphne

My forever post-rock favs Mono have announced their 13th album! It’s titled Snowdrop and it’ll be out on June 12. The first single here is a stunner.

Dry Cleaning – Sliced By A Fingernail

Earlier this year Dry Cleaning put out an excellent album titled Secret Love, and now they’ve delivered a rad bonus single to remind you that they’re about to go on tour. On a related note, why isn’t there a stop in Austin? There should be.

Slift – A Storm Of Wings

Slift will put out a new album titled Fantasia on June 5. Be sure to really crank the volume when you hit play on this psych rock giant.

Sparta – Crater

This is really nice slice of alt-rock from Sparta, a band that I’ll always have a soft spot for. Their new album, Cut A Silhouette, will be out on May 29. For those in Austin, you can see them open up for Jimmy Eat World at the Moody Amp on September 9.

Movie Breakdown: The Drama

Pre-Screening Stance:

The marketing for The Drama has been selling a film that seemingly harbors the twist of all twists. Frankly, I have my doubts that it manages to be that all that wild, but that’s OK because I’m more than happy to watch a movie from director Kristoffer Borgli (Dream Scenario, Sick Of Myself) that stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson.

Post-Screening Ramble:

I liked The Drama. It’s a well made, well acted film that’s dark, funny, and loaded with a lot of food for thought. I, however, wouldn’t say that it reinvents the rom com or anything like that, nor does it deliver a truly shocking twist. This isn’t to say the reveal, which actually happens fairly early in the movie, isn’t interesting, because it is, and there’s a good ride that comes out of the way it aggressively permeates the lives of Emma (Zendaya) and Charlie (Robert Pattinson) as the couple barrel towards their wedding, but it never really reaches a point that feels provocative enough to warrant any hubbub over it. Marketing hooks aside, I do think the film effectively explores what a person should or should not actually know about their partner/family/friends, and it does so in a way that’ll have you laughing and squirming in your seat. And honestly, even if the subject matter doesn’t quite land for you, you’ll at least have a good time watching Zendaya and Pattinson effortlessly play off one another.

The Drama hits theaters this Friday, April 3. I don’t know if it’s one you need to catch in a theater, but I will say that I think it’s an interesting experience to see what people laugh at in a movie that reps such a black core.

One Last Thought:

Alana Haim is so unlikable in this movie that it made me find her even more agitating than I usually do, which I didn’t even think was possible. What great work!

Death Cab For Cutie – Riptides

Death Cab For Cutie have readied their 11th album – it’s titled I Built You A Tower and it’ll be out on June 5. These guys have been pretty solid for nearly 30 years now, which is kind of wild. And also impressive.

Ain’t – Grazer

With every new single, I climb further onto Aint’s bandwagon. The band will release an EP titled How They Faked The Moon Landing on May 22.

Anna Calvi – Is This All There Is? (Featuring Matt Berninger)

Anna Calvi will put out her new EP, Is This All There Is?, tomorrow (March 20). I love how she sounds here with Matt Berninger (of The National), and I’d be all about them doing more together.

Movie Breakdown: Project Hail Mary

Pre-Screening Stance:

One of my wife’s favorite books is Project Hail Mary and she’s been so hyped about the movie that it’s filled me with an equal amount of hype. Here’s hoping that Ryan Gosling and co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller can do the book justice (I think they will).

Post-Screening Ramble:

Project Hail Mary is a triumph. The story is centered around Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), who wakes up from an induced coma to find that he’s all alone and hurling through space towards a neighboring sun. Because of the long sleep, he has a very, very hazy memory of the who/what/when/where/why of his current situation, but after some time he’s able to piece together that he’s on a mission to try and figure out why the aforementioned neighboring sun is seemingly unaffected by “astrophage,” a microscopic creature that’s dimming suns all over the universe (including Earth’s). As he gets settled into what he needs to do, along comes an alien who is on the same mission. Together, Grace and his new cohort, who he calls Rocky (James Ortiz), then go about trying to save their worlds.

Regardless of what you’re looking for out of Project Hail Mary, it delivers. There are heady sci-fi elements right alongside classic buddy comedy moments, and they all exist inside of a space adventure blockbuster that’s worthy of the biggest bucket of popcorn that you can buy. Or, in other words, this is a smart and measured film that’s also a straight up blast to watch. Gosling once again proves that he’s the most likeable leading man working today, and if you stroll out of the theater thinking that Rocky isn’t one of the best co-stars of all time, then you may be dead on the inside. Co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller deserve a lot of credit here as well. This is a film with a hefty runtime of two and a half hours, and there is a lot of meat on the bone between Grace and Rocky, flashbacks to before the mission, and more, but it never drags. I also think the duo did a really nice job of balancing the humor, drama, and overall stakes of the mission to create something that’s all at once comfortable, thrilling, and heartfelt. It really left me wondering – could this thing actually land a Best Picture nomination? Maybe.

Go see Project Hail Mary as soon as you can, and make sure you do it on the biggest screen near you. It opens tomorrow, March 20.

One Last Thought:

Milana Vayntrub doesn’t have a particularly big role in Project Hail Mary, but it’s still nice to see her in something that isn’t an AT&T commercial, which I feel like she’s been doing for so long now that I’ve just about convinced myself that her character’s name in those, Lily Adams, is her actual name.

Lice – Who Sent You?

Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman are Lice, and they’re back together for their first release in nine years. Anything new from Aesop Rock is always great to see but the even better news here is that the EP, Miami Lice: Season Four, is already out. Check out the “side one track one” here and then go give the full thing a listen.

Iceage – Star

Iceage frontman Elias Rønnenfelt has been steadily putting out solo material for a good while now, so I had come around to figuring that the band was possibly no longer a thing. But, here they are with a new tune – their first since 2022 – and I’m happy to see that they’re still kicking. Here’s hoping an album announcement is coming soon.

Youbet – Receive

Here’s a pretty great 90s rock-leaning quick strike from Youbet. I’m looking forward to checking out their self-titled album that’ll be out on May 1. By the way, for those in Austin, they’re going to play 29th St. Ballroom on April 10.

Robber Robber – Pieces

Robber Robber will be dropping their new album, Two Wheels Move The Soul, on April 3. I’m all about this swirling rocker – headphones are recommended!

Mei Semones – Tooth Fairy (Featuring John Roseboro)

If you’ve been around these parts at all over the last year and change, then you know I’ll share anything that Mei Semones puts out. Her new EP, Kurage, is due April 10.

Chinese American Bear – Mama

At the end of what’s been a rather busy week for me, this airy, very easy-to-like number from Chinese American Bear is really hitting the spot. Their new album, Dim Sum & Then Some, is due May 8.

Another day, another jam from Fcukers’ hotly anticipated new album, Ö, which can’t get here soon enough (it’s due out March 27).

Weird Nightmare – Pay No Mind

This is a wonderfully infectious number from Weird Nightmare, who are fronted by former METZ frontman Alex Edkins. Their new album, Hoopla, will be out May 1.

Basement – Wired

Basement just announced their first album in eight years – it’s titled Wired and it’s due May 8. This single is a real nice slice of alt-rock.

Friko – Choo Choo

Here’s a frenetic new one from Friko. The band is set to put out an album titled Something Worth Waiting For on April 24.

El Ten Eleven – Formerly Fresh

Nothing like the calming force of some quality post-rock from El Ten Eleven. I can’t wait to dive into their new album, Nowhere Faster, which is due out April 10.

Movie Breakdown: The Bride

Pre-Screening Stance:

I legit do not know what to expect from Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride.

Post-Screening Ramble:

I didn’t hate The Bride, but I don’t know if I would say I liked it. Set in the 1930s, the story sees Frankenstein’s monster (Christian Bale) travel to Chicago to seek out a doctor (Annette Bening) who may be able to create a companion for him. At first, the doc isn’t overly into the idea of helping “Frank” but eventually she concedes, which leads them both to the recently deceased Ida (Jessie Buckley), a hooker who also happens to be possessed by the unhinged spirit (or something) of Mary Shelley. After she’s reinvigorated, as Frank likes to put it, the pair get into a bit of trouble and then end up on the run.

You know, when I sum it up like that, it actually seems like a pretty straightforward affair, but the reality is that this is a very messy film. There’s an entirely unnecessary subplot with a pair of detectives (Peter Sarsgaard and Penelope Cruz) and a mob boss (Zlatko Buric) who likes to cut people’s tongues out. For some reason the film occasionally cuts to Mary Shelley (also played by Buckley) from … the beyond (?) where she says nonsensical things, but also, Shelley frequently manifests herself through the Bride, often mid-sentence, and also says entirely nonsensical things. Aside from pointless story points and whatever the Shelley gimmick was supposed to be, I’m also not sure what writer/director Maggie Gyllenhaal was trying to say here. Is it something about feminism? Love? Art? I have no clue, but what I can say is that the whole thing comes off like it spewed out of some film school student.

There is some fun to be had in The Bride – both Buckley and Bale turn in performances that are over the top yet earnest, and I dug some of the stylistic choices – but overall it’s a weird jumble of a movie that’s going to either frustrate or delight you. Good luck. The film opens this Friday, March 6.

One Last Thought:

Theater kids are going to love this movie.

I missed out on EXEK somewhere along the way but I like this post-punk number a lot and will be using it as an excuse to check out their new album, Prove The Mountains Move, which was released today (February 27). You should do the same.

The Twilight Sad – Attempt A Crash Landing – Theme

I liked the previous single from The Twilight Sad a lot, but this new one is even better – it just soars. The band will put out an album titled It’s The Long Goodbye on March 27.

Jose Gonzalez – A Perfect Storm

The Bug Club – Watching The Omnibus

Super garage rockers The Bug Club have lined up a potential SOTO three-peat (they made my top albums list in 2024 and 2025) – it’s called Every Single Muscle and it’s due out May 29. This track is, of course, a ripper.

Genesis Owusu – Stampede

This is one rad anthem of a single from Genesis Owusu. Turn it way up.

White Reaper – Need

This new track from White Reaper would have ruled 90s alt-rock radio. It can be found on the extended edition of their 2025 album Only Slightly, which is cleverly called Only Slightly Expanded (due out March 13). By the way, for those in Austin, the band is going to play the Mohawk on April 4.

Stuck – Deadlift

This post-punk effort from Stuck is a real attention-grabber. The band will put out an album titled Optimizer on March 27.

Lana Del Rey – White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter

I honestly never know if I’m going to be into whatever it is that Lana Del Rey is slinging at any given time, but I’m all about this new single, which is off her impending album Stove. It’s just so weirdly whimsical and endearing to not like.

What a clever (and amusing) little gem this is from Kim Gordon. I think I’m going to really be into her new album, Play Me, when it lands on March 13.

Ill Peach – Cult Daddy

Ill Peach just put out this pointed mix of pop and rock. Great track. On another note, I assume this means they’ll be announcing a new album soon.

The New Pornographers – Pure Sticker Shock

The second single off The New Pornographers’ impending album, The Former Site Of (due out March 27), has arrived. I like the little synth pop flourish that drives it.

Mei Semones – Koneko

I’m all the way hooked on Mei Semones, so I was very excited to see that she’s got a new EP on the way – Kurage will be out on April 10. As expected, this single has a lovely sound.

Banda Al9 – She Can Do It All

If you’re a lover of power pop, then this Banda AL9 track will immediately hit for you. I’m eager to see what they’ll roll out next.
