It was literally a case of art imitating life on Wednesday night, when Kat Von D's tattooed fans took over the Sephora on 34th Street in New York City.  Kat Von D, star of L.A. Ink, made a personal appearance at Sephora to debut her store-exclusive makeup line.  In a strange twist of fate, more people were talking about the people in line, than the makeup itself! 

People started lining up at 10:00 a.m., and by the 5:00 p.m. start time, over 1,000 people had showed up.  In just one scan, there were what appeared to be countless kids on summer vacation, overwhelming guyliner, black T-shirts, studded suspenders and thousands of tattoos, including the painted star eye tattoos, just like Kat.

My friend who attended the event scored some time with Kat Von D and graciously allowed me the opportunity to share her Q & A with you. 

Q:  A lot of blogs are saying that your line is for saucy girls only.  Is that true?

KVD:  No way man!  My mom wears this stuff!  And she's not saucy at all!  I think that's what I wanted to create with my line--versatility.  Anyone can wear it, just depends on how you wear it.  You can wear it more extreme if you want, it just depends on how you want to define certain colors.  One of the palettes is more camouflage and the other is purples and blues and stuff like that.

Q:  Do you think that makeup is just temporary tattoos for your face?

KVD:  I think that makeup is another form of self expression, like tattoos.  It's obviously semi-permanent.  I think that it's an accessory and tattoos are an accessory.

Q:  Any tips for summer?

KVD:  Primer is always forgotten, but it's the most important thing to wear.  It's what makes it as bright as can be and it lasts all day.

Q:  What do you think of people standing in line since 10:00 in the morning?

KVD:  I think it's really cool, I just feel bad that I made them wait this long.  But I think it's a lot of positive energy, so that's really cool.

The makeup line that Kat Von D developed for Sephora includes two eye shadow palettes, six shades of eyeliner, four lipsticks, including a fabulous red called Underage Red, and makeup brushes. The packaging is gorgeous, featuring Kat's signature rose-tattoo sketches.  It's biker chic meets Soho, and in her own words, "strong but feminine".

The process is simple.  I did a thorough exfoliation in the shower and then applied a light body lotion.  I then put on some surgical gloves (this was my own step--the instructions say to just use your hands) and applied the product.  I made sure to use a systematic method to insure complete coverage, as the product is clear.  I waited 10-15 minutes before dressing.  The color takes about 3 hours to completely develop and is so very natural looking.  It looks great!  Best of all?  No funky self tanner smell and no streaking.  You use one towelette every 3 to 4 days.  I would repurchase the Comodynes Self Tanning Towelettes for the convenience alone. They're perfect to tuck in a cosmetic bag for travel.

I like it!  Here are the hair products and tools I would recommend to get Eva's sleek bob:

The essence of Eva's look is clean, healthy hair.  Start with AG colour savour products.  Colour savour shampoo is sulfate-free and cleanses your hair without stripping color. Finish with a light spritz of new L'Oreal Studio Perfect Fix Ultra-Fine Finishing Hairpspray.  I received a can of this hairspray at the Total Beauty Blogger Summit and love the fact that it's non-sticky and has humidity protection.  And it doesn't build up (gross!).

NARS Fall 2008 Collection is a collection of shimmering neutral shades designed to complement the fashions seen on the runways.  The inspiration for the collection is "a very modern woman; edgy and sure of herself, sophisticated and strong, and very in touch with the current fashion", according to Francois Nars. 

The collection includes:

Eyeshadow duos Isolde, a frosty ginger and shimmering copper and Cordura (pictured), shimmering warm brown and sooty dark brown.  There is also a single shadow, Fez, which is a velvety cocoa.

The blush is this season's must have.  If you only buy one blush for Fall, NARS Dolce Vita is it.  It's a dusty rose color that will look good on everyone.  Do not miss this one. 

There are two lipsticks.  Seniorita is a sheer, shimmering cherry blossom and Beautiful Liar is a sheer, shimmering coral.  The lip gloss, Female Trouble, is a lilac mauve.  The lip colors are all very wearable and versatile and so on my "must-have" list.

Completing the collection is Rebel Yell nail polish, in a dusty pomegranate shade.

The Lancome Maharani Jewels Fall Collection debuts this month and offers up a tribute to the beauty of India.  This gorgeous collection calls us to the exotic and colorful world that you see in lush travelogues. 

The Maharani Color Design Eye Shadow Quads features the Lotus Spelendor palette with warm brown, peach and copper eyeshadows and the Secrets of Benghal palette, which features soft pink, dusty mauve and eggplant shades.  To complement the shadows is Le Crayon Khôl Kajal, a deeply pigmented pencil liner in three shades.  India Ink is the classic black, Amber Night, a rich brown and the one I plan on buying, Smoky Henna.

The highlight of the collection is the Poudre Elephant Teint limited-edition bronzer.  It's embossed with one the most revered symbols of India, the elephant, which signifies royalty and internal strength.  The attention to detail is stunning.

I particularly love the Maharini Juicy Tubes.  Inspired by the intricate motifs of Mehndi art, these Juicy Tubes are embellished with designs of scallop lines, teardrops, dots and paisley shapes.  Shades range from Mango Mystere to Guava Enchantment and Autumn Jasmine. 

The Lancome Maharani Jewels Fall Collection will be hitting department stores in July and is available now on the Lancome website.
